SmartWindows Support jumped right in after several questions appeared that to me shows quality, and that means I'll probably buy into this thing today it's to late for a freebie but when a support team answers right away I jump in if it's interesting enough, I mean how many other software makes answer questions I don't give a damn how dumb a question is answer it, you can even curse at me e.g hey dumb ass this is what you do at least it's an answer, I'm buying mine today.

I must have done something really wrong. I have no idea how to enter the product key. I can't find a place to enter it. I cannot even find a way to show the program on the desktop. I suppose I'll delete this program tomorrow when it's too late to enter the key and just chalk it up to a bad situation.

I would feel much better if it didn't sound like most of the comments are boiler plate from the company that makes this software.

It would be great if you can make this "portable" with the following capabilities:

⨀ Have the ability to save website and cloud storage passwords in encrypted form.
⨀ Be able to go to a similarly-configured machine, and run this from a USB thumb drive.
⨀ Give the option to use passwords or 2-factor authorization (through Microsoft, Google, etc.) when launching the program from the thumb drive.
⨀ So when plugging this into a hotel computer, for example, you can be logged into your web-based email and have your documents stored in the cloud opened up, according to your profile.

Reply   |   Comment by John Smithson  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

John Smithson, nice wish list, however, you need a team of programmers to accomplish that at a great cost.

Reply   |   Comment by Martin  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

John Smithson, you can prepare a USB-stick with Chrome OS Flex or any Linux Live OS and use that stick to run on any PC. The only requirement is that the guest PC allows to boot from a USB stick.

But if you only want to access web sites, why not use a tablet? And store your passwords in DropBox or in Sticky Password? Or use Apple's system to store passwords on your iPad.

You have more privacy if you use your own tablet instead of the hotel computer.

During my professional life I have always warned against utilities like this. Because you can never be sure they will survive the next update of the operating system.

I will test it in Sandboxie Plus. Or on a virtual machine.

Reply   |   Comment by krypteller  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

krypteller, I could not install it in Sandboxie Plus on a Windows 11 laptop. I could make a Cameyo portable on a virtual Windows 7 64 Pro. But that Cameyo does not run on the Windows 11 laptop.

Next, I installed it on a virtual W8.1. I needed a second key, because the first key can be used only on the first computer I used it.

It seems to run on both virtual machines. But I did not understand how to use it.

I am not going to test it on my production machine, so I stop here.

If all someone needs are browser windows & tabs restoration at its next launch, simply use TaskMgr to END-TASK your browser (ignore any resulting popup, it will disappear momentarily). At the next browser launch, it will apologize for what it thinks was a previous crash & offer to restore all your prior browser windows & tabs. No extra s/w is needed if this is all you need to be restored at next use. I use this process at COB w/ Chrome & Firefox and expect it will work for the rest.

Reply   |   Comment by BobJ  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

BobJ, windows 10 MSIE 11 if you have it open with multiple tabs open and configured to start where it previously left off, when windows restarts or shuts down it has an extremely high probability of completely forgetting there were any tabs ever open and one has to try and glean the previous tabs from the history pane.

BobJ, There are many other features of SmartWindows that you can use i.e profile creation for restoration of multiple apps.
App positioning
reopening MS office files.
etc

Giveaway should be just that, a give away.
These licenses with basically "Expiry" dates are nothing more than "Trial Ware"!

Reply   |   Comment by Mo  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+61)

Mo,
• Are they charging you money? No. Hence the name "'Give Away' of the Day."
• Do you get updates with GAOTD software? Yes, usually. "Trial ware" software does not do that.
• Can you continue using the software after the license expires? Yes. With "trial ware" software, you cannot (legally) use the software after the trial expires.

Reply   |   Comment by Kurt  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-20)

Mo, I just saw the comment below by SmartWindows Support:

"Winston Ryder, You need to purchase a new key after 1 year.

Reply | Comment by SmartWindows Support"

This is unusual for GAOTD (I think) and now knowing this, I agree with your initial assessment.

Reply   |   Comment by Kurt  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

Kurt, yes they are charging me money indirectly by making me install their software on my time table and if it does not work, I have to remove it now or after it expires, again on my time, in other words our time to interact with their software is money. There is no upgrade on any trialware software, where did you get that wrong info.

Reply   |   Comment by Martin  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Kurt, don't know what software you got form here that gives you updates. Everyone I ever tried always stated "No tech support." "No updates."

Reply   |   Comment by Michael Nix  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Mo, Agreed!! In this case GOTD is giving away time to use software and not the software itself.

Michael Nix,

There have been quite a few programs that have allowed free updates. I made a list of some recent ones showing the date offered, the program name, version, the free updates statement, and the part of the URL that follows the GOTD domain name so that you can verify them for yourself. Acethinker seems to always offer free updates. Most programs are for one year, but some are for 6 months (but still free updates).

The application installed with just one issue: i.e. it will not allow me to change the install path from the C: Program Files to another drive. I usually install my applications onto a drive dedicated to applications, leaving my C drive free of clutter.

Apart from the one gripe, the program works as described and I will be keeping it.

Thank you to the giveaway team for securing this freebie and to FiveRivers technologies for giving it to this community today.

It really help me. Every day i open 4-5 program for working at a time. Before it i must open one by one. Using SmartWindows i just need to create profile when my software opened and restore profile when i want to restore all software. and it feel great when it can remember every single tab on my chrome browser. The other things is, it can remember how my software positioned when i create profile. just like it.

After activation, a dialog/window is displayed that has several lines of text. In those, two lines stand out:

You are using a free full featured trial version of SmartWindows.
You are using a full featured paid version of SmartWindows Software.

These two statements seem contradictory. Was this a mistake?

I have to say this program does what it says it does. I use Chrome at work and have to go back into the history to restore all the tabs I was working with. That is something I will not have to do now that I am running this program. Once this program is installed, you create a profile in which you temporarily lose control of the computer. But this is a minor inconvenience since the program is running through all your open tabs, to "memorize" them so they can be easily restored the next time you sit down and run your profile. Again you do temporarily lose control of the computer while it restores all the open tabs once again. Now if you need the use of your computer, the program does pause and picks back up when your done. This is a program that does what it says. Thank you GOTD, you picked a winner.

I am lucky to have found such amazing software like this.

I have downloaded and installed it on my Windows 10 Laptop.

I am a blogger and Network Marketer and i mostly deal with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Power Point Designs.

Then Google Chrome for my multiple tabs and windows.

Smart windows has given me a good experience to save multiple profie and switch between them at convinence.

I appreciate the creators of this software.

I value this software as it has solved many of my problems.

worth it for optimised apps. I like how it closes unwanted apps via profiles.

ASIDE: What?

i7 DDR3, and you consider it pedestrian?

What has Windows 10/11 POS Phone Operating System done to you all?

I'm flying along on old Intel twin-core computers, 2400 MHz and 4 GB RAM, with dozens of tabs, multiple windows, multiple programs, all open at once, all doing tons of stuff all at the same time.

Sorry, I don't get the supposed advantage of overbuilding just to try to get Windows 10/11 POS to do what Windows 7 does just fine.

Heck, I have a Windows XP computer ripping Video DVDs all day long, no problem.

What am I missing?

I guess if new computers only come with Windows 10/11 POS, the programmers see that as the customer base,

I'll watch.

Installation was quite smooth.

There is a wizard that helps you to set up the right components to ensure your PC meet the requirements to use SmartWindows.

I tried setting up a test layout profile, and the process was quite smooth as well. I think this app is going to be very helpful for my workflow because I always have many windows of different applications open, all at the same time.

Licence details: 1 year license... if the program only works for 1 year, it is of no use to you at al! I will decide for myself how I work on my Windows 10 PC!

Reply   |   Comment by Winston Ryder  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+15)

Winston Ryder, 1 year license should be enough time to evaluate a program.
Is not that the point, to make an evaluation for free, whether you want to buy the program or not?
In addition, it is not about a fortune to buy it, if it fulfills a function you would like to continue with.

Reply   |   Comment by Svend  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-4)

Winston Ryder,
well, I don't like time-limited offers too, but I understand them: you get a LONG testing period, if the program is worth 20 bucks, you surely can buy it (for me it´s the price of one lunch in a restaurant), if it is not worth that money, it is not worth to use at all...
I like GODT for tools I use too rarely, so it is not worth for me to buy such sw - but in that case time-limited offers are not worth to try for me: effort with installation, learning the UI - and maybe not using it at all till "gotd lifespan" ends. In the case of more professional programs, which I need regularly, I don t install time-limited offers too, they are usually too expensive for me to buy them, when gotd license ends - in that case I prefer to look for some free (although less powerful and/or convenient) alternative...

Henry, Then you have to keep in mind that predominantly the licensee is Alexa Bennett, she determines how long the license lasts. Whether that is the case with this program, I do not know immediately!

Henry, I'm also not particularly interested in time-limited programs that you often see, but I have tested a lot just because they have a function that aroused my curiosity.
I have been working with computers since the late 70's and found some programs that have become faithful servants over the years and which are among the first that I install in a new computer.
Some that I found here and some that were mentioned in comments on sites like this.
Some examples of this are Launchy, Fences, Keepass, Vera Crypt, PrivaZer, Revo uninstaller etc.
I also bought some after testing a free version.
One program that I'm still looking for and that I once had under Windows3 was a small program that started when I started my computer and that worked in such a way that if you hovered over a compressed file that contained a text file, it's gone up a balloon with the contents of the test file.
A good way to quickly see what a compressed file with a cryptic name contained.
Still looking for such a program. (excuse my bad English, I'm Swedish)

Svend, any trial should be suitable for that purpose but that is NOT what Giveawayoftheday.com was made for or what its current FAQ page states:

https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/faq/#trial

"Is GOTD a trial?

Every program we give away is not a trial. We provide you with full-functioning registered version of software titles.

There are two points you need to remember:
•you have to install AND activate/register the product according to instructions given in the readme.txt file attached to every GOTD package.
•it should be done while the giveaway offer for the software is still on (within 24 hours).

Still we do not provide you with the lifetime license in terms of the fact that our package can be used to install the program on giveaway date only. It means that you will not be able to re-install the program after PC crash or install the program on another PC after the giveaway day is over."

Oddly this vendor does not appear to sell a non-expiring license, they only offer a crippled free license or a rented annual license you CANNOT BUY IT outright! https://smartwindows.app/#pricing

SmartWindows Support, don't you mean we need to rent it for a another year after the free year expires as your website does not offer a purchase of a non-expiring license at all.

Winston Ryder, what you talking about? The participating vendor determines the license scope of any particular giveaway. GAOTD staff do not determine the scope of a giveaways license even though they could specify a sensible minimum standard to prospective participating vendors, they do not.

SmartWindows Support, I note that in your installers terms and conditions you have several sections left blank and your installation leaves clues you may be using Google Analytics to harvest user usage and maybe other undisclosed information against GDPR and other privacy legislation.

"* Gathering product usage information

* Tracking product statistical behavior

* Obtaining any data extracted from analyzed portable executables"

May I suggest you disclose far more transparently what you harvest and provide a clear mechanism to disable such data gathering and transmission if the end user takes the trouble to read your pre-opted in Terms and Conditions and decides they do not want their data being processed and skimmed by googles analytics services.

Henry, 20 bucks per year... there is no one time BUY option.

Reply   |   Comment by TK  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

TK, We only offer per year license. After free year expires, you need to purchase it for next year. or you can use a free version with limited features.

TK, Thanks for the suggestion. We will for sure look into this and revamp it accordingly.

SmartWindows does what it says. It organizes windows.

As an admin for a website, and I have to keep track of many windows at once, an app like this is essential to me. Click of a button, all my windows are back in place!

Hey Breaker,

I'm sorry, am I just naive?

How do your windows get lost in the first place?

Thanks.

Peter Blaise,

If you don't know, you apparently don't use your computer for anything for other than gaming.

Reply   |   Comment by Breaker  –  9 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-8)

No, Breaker,

Just the opposite, I have tons of browser tabs and browser windows open, multiple different browsers, ebook and music editing, independent batch download programs, background sync tasks across my network, photo editing, text editing, PDF editing, all going at once.

Reboot, and everything is immediately available on demand just as it was before, each program bringing up prior tasks when opened if I care, in 'recent items' and 'favorites' and 'bookmarks' if I decline.

So, no, I have no idea what some people depend on beyond the benefits of inbuilt features.

I'm OK, I'm happy, I'm busy, and I have no imagination what this program offers that I might need that I do not have already.

That's just me, I guess.

No games,

Ever.

Is this a game-toggling program?

Breaker, Admin'ing a single website should be trivial and should not require many windows open all the time... most websites should only need attention when something changes or breaks and needs attention and if a website needs constant attention maybe it's not implemented efficiently in the first place!
