Hi Folks,

Just a FYI. A freeware program that might actually be closer to this than the PowerToys type of program is XPSyspad by xtort.
http://www.xtort.net/xtort-software/xpsyspad/

It is actually a pretty nice little program.

Shalom,
Steven

@John C

By the way, why does Mcfee Site Advisor flag this (ie GOTD) web site with Red?????

because McAfee is playing brontosaurus, the site advisor hasn't been updated, and things 2 links away can get red flags raised.

Didn't work for me. Using XP...
Attempted to do what the readme says, here is the error I received.
"Cannot import c:\directory\RESTrick Control Panel\rest_lic.key: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor,"
Any idea what that gibberish means and how to solve it?

THANKS 70 - your instructions worked fine. Except that some people download to desktop & run from there. Wherever the 'rest_lic.key' is located, find it. I put it on my desktop. Then after registration, delete. Same with setup.exe. By the way, why does Mcfee Site Advisor flag this (ie GOTD) web site with Red????? I always thought that everything downloaded from here was free from spy & crapware?

Thanks again JT and to GAOTD teams.

73 trolled us (I hope) with:

Hey I tried the “C:\Documents and Settings\ComputerUserName\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for RESTrickControlPanel(1).zip\rest-lc.key” but there is one small problem, the file “ComputerUsername” does not exist. Am I missing something here? I really want this program but I can’t figure out how to register.

And do you often get stuck looking for the "Any" key on your keyboard too?

Dear 71, did it not occur to you that when poster 2 said "12 minutes into this giveaway" he actually meant it rather than meaning "12 minutes after midnight local time"....?

The giveaway comes out when it comes out; it is not released at midnight local time for every timezone, a feat that in this networking environment would be well nigh impossible. For example I see the new release at 2am, if I can be bothered staying up that late (which I seldom do now), so 12 minutes into the giveaway for me - which happens to be at 2:12am - is also 12 minutes into the giveaway for you, whether that's at 12:12 or 20:12 or 9:12 depending on where you are.

The issue that #2 is reporting is 'drive by' thumbs downs from people who are using the mechanism to say "I have no interest in this giveaway" or "I do not like this company" or "They pissed me off so much the last time I'm not going to waste my time on it this time" - reasons for not downloading which are quite valid but which some of us would prefer that they expressed in some way other than the laziest thing for them to do which is press the thumbs down button.

But like all social sites, there's a lot of "noise" in the system, and people who have been here for more than a week or two tend to take that into account when deciding if something is worth downloading. Or keeping.

Changing the subject a little, I wouldn't mind seeing this site go *more* social, with things like a vote for what to offer next (maybe even just on one day a week?) - even if all we were voting on was info on the general type of product without detailed info on the vendor etc. Maybe that way we could encourage the inclusion of a bit more variety in the types of software offered, which I have to say is getting a bit monotonous.

Why look 48 layers deep in the "documents and settings directory" to find and import the license key (Rest_lic.key)? I found it easily in the same temporary directory that I used to unzip the setup file. Browsed to it from the registration window and it worked.

Confession: I spent too much time hunting for the registration tab. I quit pressing the small arrows used to display the various tabs too early so I had my problems with registration also.

I echo a earlier comment that suggested making registration an easier and smoother process. Often times it seems that one has to search the comments section for hints on registering. I am sure GOTD has experimented with the registration problem. Please keep at it guys - I don't believe that you have hit the solution yet.

Help Installing and Registering:
(this assumes you allow default settings to apply)

1. After downloading, run Setup.exe

3. You get the Software License Agreement - Read and click Next
4. Choose a folder for installation - Click Next
5. When the scrolling stops - Click Next
6. The installation has finished. Check "Display README file" if desired; "Run RESTrick now" is already checked - Click Finish
7. The RESTrick Control Panel will open; ant the top far Right (below the x are arrows - Click the > 12 times
8. You will see the Registration Tab - Click Registration
9. About halfway down on the Right is a tiny Folder symbol - Click the Folder
10. A box titled "Open" will appear; the window states: Look in: and is probably set at "My Documents" - Click the v (down button) to the Right of the window to drop down a list; Double Click "My Computer"
11. Locate "Local Disk (C:)" - Double Click

Just downloaded this, took about four seconds.Double-clicked the .exe, install took about eight. No problems with registration or anything.
Performed a few simple tasks, everything fine.
This simple piece of software is nothing earth-shattering, indeed, as some other users have already commented, many of it's functions are already available to the more savvy XP user. What i would like to take issue with here is the amount of users who trial software then post negative comments, that reflect not upon the software that is being offered, but rather their own lack of skills, knowledge, basic pc requirements or expectations. I have often scrolled through the list of comments for various downloads to find that people don't pay attention to what has been posted by other users.
Please....only post comments, based upon your experience, after you have downloaded, installed, and used the software!!!

You need to extract the downloaded file, using windows built-in extractor or a third party program (winzip,winrar,powerdesk..)

You will find all you need in the extracted folder.

*Note*
*If you use windows built-in extractor:*

1.double-click the downloaded file
2.In the window that opens :go to file - extract all and follow the wizard(choose a location you will remember to extract to)

when done ,then read my comment #18

PS Most people will think this comment is unnecessary, but some may find it useful(I hope)

Please note: This is not a Windows Vista program

The program is easy to install, if you follow the instructions. It appears to function well, though I think a stacked rather than scrolling tab interface would be better.

For 2000 and XP users, I recommend TweakUI (from MS) over this. There are a few features I don't recall from TweakUI, so it is worth a look see since it is free.

Good try RESTrick programmer, but it needs a little more to justify the price. Sorry. Keep trying. I am not going to vote up or down on this.

I Love these programs, however! This one Couldn`t discover dial up networking customised with different non boring icon, or My Computer customised to Bill`s Computer, it could recognise Recycle bin changed to Trash can but NOT Creative Sound control panel. So not a great variant.

Tweak UI, Win Ret Free, Safe XP (which despite its name works with 9x ) are far better/ reliable products in this category and work with one another without clashing: shareware wise:; 1st system agent is the daddy

RE: Not Interested Voting Option

I completely agree with LisaFla (Post 43) that offering a NOT INTERESTED voting option would improve the rating system.

I don't believe it is ethical for someone to vote down a piece of software until they have legitimately downloaded it and tried it for the function it was intended.

#2 - I think the reason there are so many thumbs down is people have come to the website page, decided this download wasn't for them so hit the thumbs down icon to register this fact or in fact saying this program isn't their "cup of tea".

#3 - you have a comma at the end of your web address and it prevents the website from loading. Once I removed the comma, the website address brought up the correct web page. Use http://www.rtsecurity.com/

Now to finish reading the comments...

No offense to anyone, but why waste bandwidth here for teaching/learning lessons of how to start programs in Windows. Everybody should know that this is done via Start|Programs. That should be self evident.(#47, #49)

What comes to the program itself, it's a handy, working tool for tweaking up many useful settings. It is completerly unnecessary to state here, that this can be done via TweakUi or that can be done via Registry Editor, because these statements are self clear and not relevant. The purpose of this program is to make the tweaking easy, and it succees in that.

Installed easily on Vista Home Premium as administrator, works fine. Nothing really to distinguish it from other tweakers. Excellent free tweakers I have found: freshui, MZ Vista Force (another name for XP), Security and Privacy Complete, tunexp, vispa (for Vista), Vista Tweaker, Vista Visual Master, WinBubbles, XdN Tweaker, xp smoker (last free version), TweakNow WinSecret, and RegToy. I have found that all tweakers for XP work on Vista in administor mode, with the obvious limiations. But create a system restore point before playing with them.

My vote would have to be neither thumbs up or down. It has been mentioned before that we need a "Not Interested" option added to the thumbs.
I suspect that many of the thumbs down are the voters' way of telling GOTD that they need better offers.
The "not interested" option would at least give the software developer more accurate feedback. I presume that is the reason they are offering it on here.
I'd be interested in knowing if the number of hits on this site has suffered since dropping games during the week. I know that I quit coming on weekdays.

Another lousy app by an eastern block vendor. Read the home page carefully. See the type o's. I do not, nor will I ever get tied up with eastern block software vendors, purchase or free! Think what you will. Am I prejudice? When it comes to my software, past experience with credit card theft, tells me to be!
If anyone here on the English language page of GAOTD does, it's your butt. I suggest to you, it's time to make a change. This app is a load anyway.
I deal with German, Russian, Australian, US and Canadian software companies only. No interest here for me today, Thumbs down!

Estonijaan, it's highly unlikely that developers are thinning their margins by hiring people to watch GAOTD.

As I mentioned two posts above, it's much more likely for people to be voting on their *perception* of the software as opposed to the *experience* of testing it.

WHO ARE VOTING - COMPETITORS?

What happened here in the first half hour increases my suspicions that some software developers are hiring people to watch every release of GAOTD and to vote down competitors.

This is not the first time that in less than half an hour after opening a GAOTD, a whole bunch votes it down before they can have had any time to test, as pointed out in this case by #2 computersexplore and #4 halfdeaded.

SUGGESTION TO GAOTD. Don't allow anyone to vote without qualifying their position. The moderator should have the right to erase votes that obviously are not based on any assessment.

I installed RESTrick out of curiosity, intending to do a close comparison with TweakUI and report the results. However its interface was so tiny and cramped that I rapidly lost any interest in investigating it. I gained the impression there was nothing on offer which isn't in TweakUI. Although this impression could be wrong, I really don't care. If the developers haven't got time to explain the program's unique features, or the time to design a good user interface, then I haven't got time to evaluate their software.

Warning: anyone uninstalling this program using Revo Uninstaller should take great care. Revo Uninstaller falsely identifies several Control Panel-areas of the registry which have nothing at all to do with RESTrick, and offers to delete them! This is obviously not the fault of RESTrick, but the fault of Revo Uninstaller. However, I know that some GotD'ers rely heavily on Revo Uninstaller so I'm mentioning it in case it helps someone avoid some very nasty problems.

So although it's always good advice anyway, I particularly strongly recommend setting a restore point before installing this program.

people don't vote on the actual software user experience. unfortunately, they vote on their perception of the software, as in: "do i like this concept?" or "does this concept seem cool"?

GAOTD should consider building the thumbs up/down system into the the install package. you'd only be able to vote after a runtime of half an hour or so. then you'd get back into the install folder for a standalone "vote module".

that would end the ridiculous skewing of the voting process. it's amazingly irritating to see thumbs down for good software simply because of "cool perception factor".

Being an MCSE, I know where all these tools and switches are, but what this neat little program does is make them accessible and easy to modify. To register, just click on the little icon in the center and browse to where you unzipped your program and rest_lic.key file, easy!
I liked this program and really appreciate GOTD and their offerings!
