SAGA is a persistent world RTS in an epic fantasy setting. Players collect troops, build armies, conquer new lands and build up kingdoms, complete with resource collection, city building and peasant management. SAGA's features include massive armies, multiplayer questing, guild wars, espionage, and an auction house for trading troops and spells.

SAGA has no subscription fees. Players pay as little or as much as they decide, by purchasing 'booster packs' of random troops and spells, which are traded and customized to create the strategic army of choice for each player. Give Away Of The Day Subscribers start with 10 Free booster packs, which would normally be sold for $29.95. Your account will be credited with the bonus products only if you register on this page, http://www.playsaga.com/intro_gaotd/ while the promotion lasts.

These free accounts will have all game options available with the exception of trading and hardcore PvP battles (you can still PvP in scrimmage mode, a battle type that does not permanently damage your city).

I would just like to say that I took advantage of this give away, and I would like to thank GAOTD for hosting this deal. It is a unique game, and very enjoyable. In fact, off to play now!

188: You can actually but full commercial games for the equivalent of $3 (in my case I've bought many a game for less than £5, and a number of them cost less than £2 each!).

As for this game, since I'm relying on WiFi to access the internet I wouldn't know about how the actual game operates, I do know however that once you buy a game (yes, for many people here this was free, but it is still a commercial game) you should have the complete package, any patches, updates or add-ons in the future should require nothing more than a free online registration. That's one of the main reasons online trading card games have faded away, the people using them got fed up having to pay for extra stuff (by "having" to pay I mean that by not having those extra things, you don't feel like you have the complete package). And most trading card games were FREE, you only had to pay for the cards/packs.

Thank you szatuchny for great support for this game.
I honestly won't be using the game because I don't do mmorpg's but with this kind of support and offerings I'd definitely have this game.
Hell, from what I've seen so far about it I'd PAY for this game.

A great offering.

P.S. Use XP for gaming, Vista is crippleware, even after you pay for it =)

187: Don't be rediculous. You can play without buying anything! And buying the full non trial game is only $20! There's nothing else to buy. You can buy boosters if you like, but not nessasary. No other features or anything else to buy. I've played since retail came out with 10 boosters (I've been trading for what I want), which is the number you get in this special offer. Also, sometimes they give out additional free boosters. Just a week ago they gave everyone a free booster for instance.
If you want to buy a booster (instead of spending time trading up with your free ones), then its only $3, hardly the cost of a full commercial game as you claim.
And boosters are only troops/spells. You get ALL other features with the purchased game.

Its an ONLINE game yes, but not one that requires a monthly subscription like most of them. Aside from the one time $20, there's nothing else you need if you want to play the full thing.

Waste of time! Have to admit I'm apalled that the developer blatantly failed to mention in the description that it's an online game! Very unprofessional and complacent. And the need to continuously buy features & components (many of them costing the equivalent of an entire commercial) is diabolical!

This is not a free game but instead a teaser intended to get you started to later buy the full version. Many of the most important options in the game are locked out from this deal. GAOTD does advertise yes but not this way, at least not to my knowledge and should stay away from situations like this. This game and dea would be like getting a lifetime trial on a dvd burning program where all the important features are disabled until you purchase the full package. Is this what GAOTD is all about? I did not think so before this "trial" package.

I did every single thing recommended and still had problems. I spent most of yesterday going through everything trying to get it to work. I just could not stay connected to the server. I will try again today but if I continue to have these problems, I will have to remove it from my computer. I just can't spare the space for something so big that does not work. Too bad as it looks like it has potential.

Apart from some connection issues on my end, I've had no problems so far. It did take a second account to get the 10 packs, since the first one got screwed up along the way (and I did start from the link provided here), but I think things are going much smoother with the newer account anyway.

I'm at a bit of a disadvantage in that I don't play many RTS games, although this isn't as detailed as some of those I've played and doesn't need constant babysitting. Where I'm at, the battles are a bit tougher to get through with the army I'm able to put out (especially if the CP for the battle is lower than my max field CP), but I've only been wiped out rapidly once. So far. I need to take a second look at some of my units and see what I can get for them.

I don't know, maybe I should have taken advantage of having 10 packs to pull from instead of three before deciding what faction to take. I had opened only a couple packs before deciding, while later packs had some cards that sound particularly useful. I'm keeping some of them around for later trading or perhaps another nation, complemented by adding more boosters if and when I have a little extra cash I can spend on Saga.

All that said, I'm glad I decided to give this game a shot. Gives me something else to do, even if it does mean there have been a couple things I've put off doing to play.

I think I might have enjoyed the game, but alas I am uninstalling it. GAOTD... since this was the first time that this kind of game was offered, you might warn us next time about the registration thing. That's what the "README.TXT" file is all about. It seemed to work with Vista, but someone mentioned that the screen setting is 1900 x 1220 resolution. OK, but I have a 19" widescreen (1440 x 900)

Anyhow, after downloading and installing and waiting almost an hour for the upgrade, then running it only to find I have to register, fill out the registration and then asked to purchase or try it free (what the F***?) then come back to the GAOTD only to find that there is another registration page.... AAARRRGHGHGH

Forget it. The game can't be a good as all the hoops that must be jumped.

Well, I debated back and forth with myself on this one. To download ot not... The hubby just last week talked me into increasing our internet package for a higher download cap and faster speeds. But I had never played this type of game before so I was hesitant.

Before I came here, I had never played any games before except the occasional solitaire/free cell stuff. Since then I have tried a lot of games(Thanks to Whiterabbit's reviews) and have expanded my knowledge and tried many a game I would have never even knew existed if it were not for GGAOTD(plus many a software). I am still not very good with the arrow key because of my arthritis but I have been having fun trying some of them too.

Anyway, I decided to take the plunge. Spring is coming so won't be spending a lot of time on the PC. But I went ahead and downloaded it, so as to learn how to work it and then this winter could really get into it. Besides the chances of my video POS card making the game work was pretty slim; so hopefully by then, we could get a new one.

Set up the accounts last night(#167 I have yet to get a spam email) and half way got the cards because the server kept stalling out on me. Finished getting the cards today. Then did the download.
Gotta love the new speed..downloaded in 8 minutes flat. It was flying. :)

Went to set it up...BINGO! Black screen. Just as I thought...... Video card. I knew it would happen.

So like I said, I probably wouldn't have gotten into it until this winter anyway...... Since I am outside most the time during the spring/summer. So I have the accounts..just have to wait to get a new video card. I looked at some of the videos. It really looks like an awesome game. And I have checked into the Saga forum..need to sign up there and start reading some of the material there. Just not sure if it is my kind of game.

But I do want to thank GAOTD for what they do and the people at Saga for being so helpful in the forums.

This is a great game indeed. I've hardly started and I'm engrossed already, even though I haven't got much of a clue what's going on at the moment, lol.
When playing the tutorials, I seem to get a crash every time a new section starts. If I restart the game (quite a long process to actually load it), the game carries on from where it left off. I've had this happen quite a few times now and it's a bit 'inconvenient', lol.
The game's going to take some time to get to grips with and that's something I like in a game, so thumbs up from me and a huge Gracias to the good folk at Saga for coming up with this offer for us. :¬)
I'm not a huge fan of chat in games though and wish I could turn that screen off. It seems to get in the way sometimes, as well.
Early impressions here, so I could change my mind at any given time! lol

Re: message #172

I download the game from Game Giveaway of the Day but didn’t know how to sign up properly. I just went to the sign up screen on the
opening menu, instead of the sign-up screen for Giveaway of the Day Subscribers. Now it won’t let me sign up and receive my bonus of 10 booster packs as part of the Game Giveaway of the Day. It keeps saying I am already signed up under the info I want to be signed up under and won’t let me sign up again. (I know, I screwed up!) What happens if we make a mistake; does that mean we blow the chance of getting the 10 booster packs?

Can you tell me how to change this signup over to the Giveaway of the Day sign-up. I have already named my nation, etc.

Thanks

Sounded great. I downloaded, registered, started. In the first tutorial it could not connect to the server and halted my computer. It froze. After a while (while I tried to reset) a "Blue Screen of Death" showed up (well, a blue text screen with lots of error messages in white characters). I can't recall when was the last time I saw one. I think this may the first time it happened in my current setup (XP, Core 2 Duo, 1GB of memory). I decided to uninstall it -- better not invest much of my time on something that behaves like this.

#165 You should have created your account via the link here on gotd - if you are using the in game register button you are creating a normal account which won't have the free stuff. Please make your account from the link on this site - then when you get to the client part just type in your login information and login to the game.

#166 The forum accounts are not linked to the game accounts for security purposes. If you want to login to the forums you'll have to create a forum account. You COULD use the same username and password but I'd advise against it.

As for the server not responding message that is due to one of the reasons I posed above in #164 - something on your side is blocking the client from communicating with the game servers. Make sure if you're using the windows firewall that you allow the saga.exe and sagapatcher.exe processes in the exceptions list.

#167 - I've no idea who you got the email through (never been to jetable) but we don't sell emails - so if you got spam its because that domain name is already under the control of spam servers. It has absolutely zero to do with us. We only use emails sent to us to send our players updates on the game.

#168 If you used the gotd link you will have the 10 packs in your account right after signing up. If you didn't...you won't so go back to the link and use the one on the site here. The packs will show up on the buy boosters page which you are linked to immediately after signing up via the link on gotd - if you get an option to choose a purchase method you used another link to get in.

#170 You don't need to use a promo code - but be sure you use the link here on gotd or you'll not get the 10 packs.

#171 You apparently don't understand the game mechanics. Your troops can die, yes, but they are resurrected at your temple. You don't ever LOSE them and its far from a money grab. From your post I'm guessing you didn't even try the game which is pretty silly since we are giving out 30 dollars of free troops which is enough to create a great army with.

Being an online game, are their any subscription fees?

No. Saga has absolutely no sign-up or subscription fees. Instead, players are required to buy their troops in booster packs. These troops remain a player's permanent property, but can be traded or upgraded, and gain experience and new weapons and armor over time. Additionally, they can be killed<<<<<lmao-

About 6 hours after providing a disposable email adress (via jetable.org) to this company to register I started recieving spam. In a foreign language no less. Such utter disrespect for their customers, paying or future paying, gets them blacklisted in my book. Two thumbs down, and a recommendation to get some customer relations training.

It's a fine thing I used an address that will automatically stop working in a week so I won't be getting spammed out of my permanent email address.

I tried to post on your playSaga forum, but I wasn't able to so!
I Opened 2 accounts and your site wouldn't let me login!

I have no idea why, but I am sure that there is something wrong from your site side! because registering via i-explorer would NOT require any ports to be opened what so ever! and the proof for that I completed the registration form already and it accepted it!

My only question is: why your site wouldn't log me in? And whenever the client is launched any attempt to log in, comes back with "server could not be found" message!

any answers ?

If you are having trouble starting the game it is most likely addressed on the saga technical support forums.

Video issues (i.e. click on start, screen goes blank, nothing happens, back to windows, crashes to desktop: http://www.playsaga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2510

Patching the game issues: http://www.playsaga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4671

Server not responding issues: Turn off your firewall, antivirus and anti-spyware software and try to run it. If it works, you need to figure out how to add the program to your safe list. If this does not work, your router may be blocking the ports needed to play in which case please see: http://www.playsaga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2272

Pretty much all of the scenarios I have seen here in the posts on GAOTD have been addressed on the forums. Please take a second to look it up if you are having problems. The main technical support forum with all of the topics is http://www.playsaga.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=25.

Couple more comments to help out:

If you're getting the can't connect to server message when running the game you have something blocking you from reaching the servers - they are indeed up. We've found lots of things can do this so here's the main list:

- turn off firewall
- turn off anti-virus
- turn off anti-spyware
- make sure your router has opened up UPD ports 19691-19701

If you're getting a black screen you have most likely one of two issues:

- Video drivers are out of date, upgrade to the latest version
- Your monitor frequency isn't being passed properly by Windows to the game client. Check your monitor frequency (you can get this in XP by right clicking the desktop > properties > settings > advanced > monitor tab - whatever the frequency your monitor lists needs to be added to the settings.ini file in your SAGA directory. Add it under the [GRAPHICS] section as a line like this:

frequency = X

X should be what your frequency was.

If you're crashing right after you choose your nation and try to load the nation/domain then you are having a video card/driver issue. The easiest fix would be to try turning off the trees and grass. To do this you can open your settings.ini file and make sure under the [GRAPHICS] section that you have these lines:

showgrass=0
showtrees=0

If your game runs fine after that you know your video card or drivers are not handling the grass and trees properly. You could try to upgrade your drivers and try turning those back on.

If you're patching is having problems with patching then SAGA is having issues with something in your connection or permission settings. This one is a bit harder and you'll probably need some more personal help. To help figure out what is wrong you can do this:

Right click the desktop icon that was created (Play SAGA). Choose properties and then add to the Target line the following " -log" without the quotes. Hit apply. Now run the patcher again. After it runs it will have created a file in your SAGA directory called patcherlog.log and in it you'll find the files it was having trouble downloading. You can simply find those and delete them and try to patch again - in most cases this will be a solution. However, if you are using Vista you may find you have a permissions issue. There are several posts on the forums at www.playsaga.com/forum that can help with patching issues you might want to dig through. I wish I was a Vista guru but I'm not. =) If you're still stuck with patching then please join the forums there and post your issue and someone will get to your thread as soon as they can.

Most other issues have resolutions as well - please check those Tech Support threads at www.playsaga.com/forum if I didn't cover yours.

- Monk

Hated it!!

I wasted almost 3 hrs trying to login with the client after I created the account, Still failed to login!

The server just wouldn't let me in!

So I thought that I might've lost my password, then I went again to the site and entered "I forgot my password"!

Came back on my face, the response said that "the email I entered does not match with the the one in the password! Goodness!!

OK, go to the forum and to GAOTD sites and read what ppl are saying! NOTHING!

OK ... lets create another account, have a pen handy for "recording" every thing fresh, since I learned from posts in both sites that I am allowed to have 2 accounts!

Same thing!! Server wouldn't let me login!

here we go again, I went to the site and asked for my password to be sent to me! The page returned that the email I am entering does not match what it is recored in the database!! Huh!!!

The only explanation is that I am trying to connect from "Kuwait City" half way to the moon, with T1 connection and still not being able to connect because it's not US based IP address!!!!

This is the only explanation that I got especially after dropping every single protection on my system (no firewall, anti-virus, Anti-Spam-ware) and turned off every single Internet activity!!

I suppose no single possibility was not explored, therefore I AM NOT ONLY PASSING ON IT, I AM WIPING IT OFF MY HD!

It feels like I am so sorry that I got myself into wasting almost 3 hours for an "uncalled for headache!" :(

No Cheers!

Pretty neat game, actually. It's aways nice to have a game that isn't yet another "match 3" puzzler. However, I had to vote thumbs down.

Not including the registration fee as part of the "giveaway" goes against the spirit of this site -- which is to give away FREE, UNCRIPPLED software. The booster packs are nice, but instead I would have preferred having the registration fee waived (or a choice between the two).

I had no problems with download and install, using Vista, worked fine for me, with minor lag for patch and login, but no major issues with using the software. I *did* have to update my graphics drivers, and got a message to that effect. So if you're having issues like those mentioned by #155, that might be something to look into.

Looks cool, but not really something I have time for. I work a full time job 5 days a week, and playing MMORPGs (as strategy based as this one is, it's basically a MMORPG) doesn't really fit into that kind of schedule.

Although this is pretty much a great offering from GGOTD (but not for me) my two cents is that the site was much much better when it was a DAILY offering. I don't like the titles being offered (again, today's offering is great, just not great for me) on the weekends compared to our past offerings, and I don't really like the way the original GGOTD site has been all but obliterated. I don't think I'm alone here in saying "Bring us back our old GGOTD!"

Thanks.

The game was somewhat fun, and I'd probably be still playing it if not for a rather serious gripe.

Currently we receive 10 booster packs, and this is indeed pretty generous. However, in those packs there will be only a few soldiers of each type, and tiny units (with 2-4 soldiers) are almost useless in the game as they cost 5 force points for the unit itself in addition to the points per soldier in the unit. The human units are usable by everyone, so boost the effectiveness of the basic troops you start with fine, but to use the specific units gained in the packs given away here effectively you actually *have* to buy more boosters and/or trading rights (by registering). I'm now talking about the orc/elf/dwarf/etc cards.

If only there were some way to gain more soldiers ingame without buying the boosters, I'd probably play. I'd suggest adding card gains to some quests, probably only gold ones would be suitable here. Then I'd play, and possibly buy some boosters as well, as the ingame card-gain would likely be slow to preserve the ingame economy.

So I won't be playing this game, but as it was still fun I'm giving it a thumbs up.

I am running Vista Home Premium with 2GB of RAM. I have gotten into the game, created my world and then as soon as I go the start button in the tutorial the progam crashes

Game refuses to run. Whenever I try and log in, it says the server isn't responding.

When I go to the website (which, frankly, is useless - flash should not be used for navigation purposes or anything important on a website) and log in, most pages tell me I need to have a nation (or words to that effect) before I can access them. I presume this nation thing is something I do when running the game but, since that doesn't work, I have no idea.
Because the website is effectively useless until I can get the game running, I have no way of checking whether I was able to redeem all my cards - when trying to do so, a few packs in, I clicked on the 'redeem more' button (or whatever exactly it said) and the site just went nuts, the page didn't load correctly, I couldn't navigate back because of a 'POSTDATA' problem and when I go back to the 'buy boosters' page it says I no longer have any to redeem but, like I say, I can't be certain I was able to redeem all 10 that I was entitled to.

I'm so close to just giving up and uninstalling, it's not worth the hassle.

Downloaded ok and installed smoothly but insists on a very long update of files every time I try to start the game. Of course I haven't been able to actually 'start' the game, although I received the ten packs and created a nation, every time I click on the 'Enter' button the game locks up and then just quits. No error messages, no good byes, just quits.
Really a shame too, I was looking forward to this one as the trailers and artwork looked so good. Oh well.

@133. Try researching a little, you can turn off all of the security in Vista fairly easily. With a bit of tweaking (granted too much) Vista can be made as useable as XP.

@146 works fine on my 8800GT... does ctrl-alt-del work? like is the machine freezing?

Downloaded and installed on XPSP2 problem-free.
Seems this is a giveaway of the card packs as the game version offered is offered freely on the Saga site.
Either way I was impressed at first. I've played WoW for years and this appeared to be an alternative spin on the idea.
Seemed like a very generous giveaway.
Had a look at some of the offered card packs on the Saga site and created an account with no issues. :)
(One minor niggle...Saga assumes you use Internet Explorer as your browser and launches that rather than checking the default browser.)

The Sagapatcher updates to the latest version. So far so good
However when I run the game it turns off my monitor and I have to reset my machine to recover..:/
Tried several times to no avail. Cycling the power on the monitor doesn't even help. This game just kills my display. (nvidia 8800GT+19"LCD)
As this has no external configuration options I can find I'll sadly be dumping this game quick-fast.
So thanks anyway GoTD for the offer, but as this doesn't actually play for me, it's history. As nice as the desktop icon is to look at I prefer to play the games I install :P
As an aside, since installing Saga, The 'Rise Of Atlantis' installer is unable to complete either. It complains a file is already in use.
Installed plenty of GoTD products in the past without issue....including Rise of Atlantis.
Yet today two failures, maybe coincidence, maybe related, definitely annoying.
Pity too, this looked promising from the screenshots and website.

Well, my computer spent all day yesterday downloading and installing. I signed up for an account yesterday morning. After the game was finally ready, I tried to log in. Couldn't. It didn't recognize me. I tried to create an account again, and it said My name and email had already been registered. Couldn't sign in, couldn't get an account, so I sent an email to support last night. Nothing. No reply. I tried to login this morning and I get 'server not responding'. I'm just about fed up and ready to uninstall.
