My impression is Andrea is a bit behind his bills. He is asking money for simple support. It is a good program, but is it worth the money. Activewords for 30 dollars will do all and more. And the use of AW is so liberal. Install in as many machines you own.
It is all about the attitude

Would have liked to have tried - to compare with Phrase Express, which I currently use (and which seems to work well). Frustrating delay in getting license. Received too late to use, even with your extra day. Will hope for better luck next time.

I received the "PhraseExpander Standard Complimentary License" by e-mail many hours after the expiry time -- almost 24 hours after I had requested it. This is clearly due to bad planning on the part of the developers!

@dluckyone: you shouldn't be concerned about the message on the bottom of the application. The provided license doesn't include upgrades, so it's normal
@Sam Johnson: if you want to try the Pro version you can do that by clicking on Help / Enter License Key and on Remove License. This will revert the program to trial version and you can test the features of PhraseExpander Pro
@Florazar: the offer you saw is for PhraseExpander Professional (55$ is the price for PhraseExpander Standard

@all: I'll send you an email in a few hours. if you still haven't received your license you will be able to activate it today. So you can send me an email if you still have issues.

@76 (Andrea Nagar), sorry to say, but one "candy" message deserves another: It's night (deep night for that) in UK and not being able for hours to obtain the license key for this Software (yeah, I was unfortunately one of us to see that blue obscuring the view "subscription" line on the page where I tried to fill a form, soon after I started filling it, and further after googling for help on some blog and finding the same link - being able to fill that form and getting message I was about to find, in seconds! an e-mail asking me to confirm my address and DIDN'T!) - Phraseexpander was UNINSTALLED, as I don't intend to write to You AWAY from Today's GAOTD promotion asking for it.

So - sorry, no testing, no reviews, no recommendations, no praises of Your Software either. Not from me anyway:((

On GAOTD we expect better Service, wasting anybody's time and patience in this rather shabby way doesn't excuse the fact that it is a free Gift (after all) ??..

Andrea, I understand that this software does provide a depth of features that many free alternatives do not. The software itself is sound although slightly large and not the prettiest thing to look at. The menus are a bit overly complex for my taste but by no means hard to navigate.

The $56 price tag is obviously a major sticking point for many and I wholeheartedly agree. Quality software is not easy to produce, but with an oversaturated market and literally hundreds of alternatives its hard to justify such a steep price. I have no doubts that some customers are willing to pay such a sum for software that in their eyes is worth it. However, I think that in the end you would provide a better product at a lower price, and in the end eve make more money due to the increased consumers that accompany a lower price. $20 is pushing the limits for software of this type but I think for the very complete and useful product you have it would be reasonable.
Ultimately I think the software is excellent but not without flaws, the price is astoundingly high and should be at the very least re-evaluated, and the customer service (at least from what I have seen here on GOTD) is excellent.

#54 We all know the free alternatives.

We all do NOT know the free alternatives.

It is good when others point out to me stuff that I never knew existed. That does the same or better than the current GOTD product.

Thought USA (the home base of GOTD website) is the land of the free. Where freedom of expression is valued.

Stop telling others what they should say or should not say, can or cannot say in this Comment area. (within the bounds of polite feedback i.e. no obscenities or racial hate-mail allowed). Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.

It is good feedback to the software developer.

I don't really know the value of this software. I looked in earlier and thought I might pass. What tipped me into trying this and maybe wondering latter how I did without it was simply how often Andrea came it to answer remarks or add his comments. Though I didn't like my PC wanting to restart with zero warning.

1. to Jack Rogers, currently @ 74:

I also encountered the same situation with a blue box, making it impossible for me to see the fields to be filled in, so I decided to switch my browsers and use Chrome instead of IE, and sure enough it worked for me. I know it's strange, but it solved the problem.

2. to others:

If despite your having the program registered, it still shows as not registered, please make sure to exit it from the notification area of your taskbar, and then restart the program from your desktop icon.

Hope that helps some of you.

While I appreciate this offering, I don't think I'll be using it. I did download the program, but don't see how to import my AC files, as there is no tab to do so. I was really hoping to get a version that had all of the bells and whistles to test drive.

I personally have used IT in my transcription position and HATED it with a passion. It was way overpriced, their customer service is horrible and they charge for every upgrade.

I use SmarType and LOVE it. http://www.smartype.com/

Could not agree more with (57) Mike's comments about the barrage of negative comments, gripes & moans this site seems to attract from people who are "life's takers", these people give back nothing in regard to this site & life in general I susspect.
Thankfully though, there are still plenty of people who make a really positive contribution to this site with there evauation of software that they have actually tried & yes critisim often, but critism which is "constructive" & of course suggestions & recomendations of other often free alternatives that not "everyone" may know, so to them & the software developers who offer their software to us all at no cost, I would like to say a big Thank You!

Downloaded the software, and got a message saying it had been activated. Now, every time I switch the computer on, a window appears telling me to enter the license number.
I clicked on the link to get the license number and it sent me to a page where there was a form to fill in, which was OBSCURED BY A BLUE BOX, making it impossible to fill in the form.
In the comments, there are quite a few by the author, telling people to EMail him if they have problems,. BUT THERE IS NO EMAIL ADDRESS.
Very disapointing. Sorry.

my only comment right now is to #68, maybe if you learned how to use an application you wouldn't have so much trouble with it, on your cell phone, go into the options for texting and change it from "word" to "ABC" and it will stop trying to guess what your typing and putting it there, then go read the fracking manual so you actually know what your doing

this like any application given away here is not for everyone, it's a combo app that does several things, and seeing as i give out a lot of standardized information and URL's for items, it's quite useful to me

thank you GAOTD and Andrea for your work,

Those who don't understand the usage for this type of software are missing out. For example, how many times have you hated having to type your email address? I've used Smart Type Assistant for several years and gladly paid for it before it became free. I had tried numerous programs to do what STA does but didn't find one that worked for me.

I use STA for so many things: Inserting my various emails where needed. e.g., I have one I use for my genealogy email address, one for my shopping email address, etc. I used it just now to complete the word "genealogy," because I often transpose its characters while typing. My signature in emails (two different signatures that I use; one of the signatures has two lines). Places where I have to fill in a form with address, phone, zip, etc., since I will not leave that information saved in my browser. Genealogists can use it to insert text they use a lot in their database. It saves me a ton of time when I find information on my ancestors.

STA works in almost every program and it uses the text type that is in use where you insert it, i.e., formatted or unformatted. The only program I found where it doesn't work is in KeePass Password Safe, which is where it shouldn't work.

If STA expands something I don't want expanded, I simply press ESC to stop it. I assume this and other programs do the same. Yes, some antivirus programs see STA as a keylogger, but I don't mind. I know it's not sending the text anywhere, so I continue to use it and love it.

One thing this program does that would be nice is to open a program and log you in, as mentioned by one user. I don't use that functionality enough to need it. Thanks, GAOTD, for this freebie, but I agree that the purchase price for those who would need it later is too steep.

# 66 Maureen ~ imagine instead of typing your email address you just type ;mm and it is done
your password gets filled in by typing ;pp
you can designate any combination you want
if you have multiple email addresses no problem ;mm1, ;mm2 etc
;ww opens wordpad
though the quickest way to open any program in Vista or 7 without wasting time with mouse is by pressing the Windows Key and letters in. program Ex: Windows key, W gives you option to open Wordpad, Windows key then wo adds choices of MS Works Word Processor or MSWord

This may come as a surprise to the developer, but not everyone is running sys7 or sys8, not when XP is faster, more reliable, and always compatible. XP users like small and light weight programs, and shy away from unnecessarily large programs offering little payback.

This is a very nice tool - more powerful than most of the other tools mentioned in my opinion, but way too overpriced. I think a price of $10 and $20 for pro would get you many many more customers. The pricing of iPhone & Android applications should have proved that. When you price yourself such that customers don't have to rationalize the purchase, it's ridiculously easy to sell to them.

Ok.

Got mine up & running on Xp3.

This is the 3rd such offering that I have tried and I like to have something like this in the background but compared to the others the word STANDARD should be replaced with TRIAL and the PRO version should be to one given away for free. Then it will compete with what else is freely available.

It works smoothly and doesn't seem to slow the system down and its easy to educate it but nothing above the opposition.

Not for me thanks. I'll call this a 'nearly.

Thanks anyway GAOTD and Messr Nager

Today's giveaway sounds nice and it is always good to appreciate small development teams and encourage them, so let us at least try it out before downvoting it. Thanks to the developer Andrea Nagar for his patient and diligent support here.

Now I must admit, I am always wary of any keyloggers. Though I think I can trust today's giveaway as it has been validated by GOTD team, I would still prefer to use open-source tools for such hotkey/macro purposes.

Autohotkey is a famous freeware, open-source macro/hotkey (scriptable) tool, that can do a ton of stuff with complete customizability, though it has a bit of a learning curve if you want to really leverage its macro language. Thankfully, it also has a lot of free scripts published online by its ever-growing user community/fanbase, which can serve most of your humdrum macro needs (and probably more!).

For past few years (especially at workplace), I have been using an awesome Autohotkey script that can auto-correct your typos (typing mistakes), on-the-fly, in almost in any Windows software you are typing in, with a default corrective database compiled from Wikipedia's huge list of common misspellings. It can also be used to auto-complete any abbreviations you choose, and the biggest advantage is that you can quickly use the WIN+H hotkey command to easily add your own typo-corrections and abbreviation-expansions specific to your own quirky style of typing, permanently to its database, which is just a plain text file, which can be always backed up for safe-keeping.

This seemingly magical script is called Autohotkey Universal AutoCorrect:
www.autohotkey.com/docs/Hotstrings.htm#AutoCorrect

Here is a brief review from Lifehacker:
http://lifehacker.com/192506/download-of-the-day-universal-autocorrect

That Lifehacker link also has a pre-compiled executable (.exe) version of the Universal Autocorrect tool, which doesn't need you to install Autohotkey first. If I recall correctly, the exe version of AutoCorrect is portable, and can be used off a USB pen drive or flash memory card. Note that this AutoCorrect tool/script is Windows only (though you may be able use it on Linux using Wine).

If you would still prefer to download and use the Autocorrect script (.ahk) instead of exe, I would recommend using the Autohotkey_L version of Autohotkey, which has proper Unicode support and lots of new features, and is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

AutoHotkey_L
http://l.autohotkey.net/

Just my 4 cents. :)

Compared all of the available programs awhile back and, for me, the free phraseexpress was waaay better than even the pro version of this.

Spelling correction, phrase expansion, clipboard manager, in-line calculator, program launcher ... phrase express offers much (much) more than phraseexpander (standard OR pro).

Pretty much, when you try to sell a product *this* much inferior to a freebie, you gotta expect that someone is gonna call you on it. Save your time messing with this and get over to the phrase express website

Andrea Nagar,
I have downloaded and tried the program. I'm in love with it already. I am sorry for some of the input you've received here. A lot of times people who write here help others but more often than not the comments are rude or inconsiderate. It's like you are at a grcocery store giving away free samples of a product (let's say cupcakes) and you think everybody would be happy to get a free sample or two. But instead you find that everyone is saying things like "oh, these are way too expensive, I'd never buy one" or "I like vanilla frosting better" or "these need more nuts" or "I think they might make me fat .... ohhh, but I think I'll try 2 more!"
I mean, come on people, lighten up on these people who share their products in hopes that a few people will like them enough to spend a little $$$. Maybe they should change the name of this website from GAOTD to BFSED (Bash Free Software Every Day). I mean really, these programs are obviously not for everyone and good input & ideas are helpful but the endless bashing is annoying (at least to me) and I mean really, it's always easier to criticize than to praise. Where I work the boss has a policy. NEVER CRITICIZE UNLESS YOU HAVE AT LEAST 1 POSSIBLE SOLUTION THAT COULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. Thanks Andrea for such a great program.

I have been using a program called ActiveWords, which is very similar to this program and it has done wonders. What I don't think that many people realize about this program is that it does more than just replace text. It can save you time by doing many other things as well, such as launch programs, create new emails, navigate to websites (and search websites), open documents that are used quite often, and more. This Giveaway really is a lot and probably worth the $56. However, it is free today, so take it while you can. For more info regarding ActiveWords and my review of PhraseExpander, I just wrote a blot post about it that can be found here: http://everything-823.blogspot.com/2012/10/phrase-expander.html

Has someone compared this program with the Awarded PhraseExpress? From what I can understand from the info, the latter does the same thing and has a whole array of programmabilility options that this program does not seem to have.

For example just a simple key combination can make it opent the login page of my blog, enter the username and password and bring me to the blog dashboard.

Is there something special about PhraseExpander that makes it more useful than PhraseExpress which is very easy to use and is free?
