Thought it was something to do with a current version of Firebird running - have managed to stop service, uninstalled everything but left files in \system32 and trying reinstall. No go.... Get a quick message that a file is missing and not set up and when I run IIS Express it says that port 8080 is already in use by another application.
Thoughts now?

AJNiteOwl,
It might be that you have another app from another company also using Firebird. However, that should theoretically not be a problem. We are building a test in at the start of Money-Pal to check first that IIS-Express is running and Firebird is available. Howver, that might take a day or 2 to test :-(.
We will post again when we get that fixed.

AJNiteOwl,
I apologise for taking so long to respond.
We had a look at this problem but was unable to simulate it.
It might be because IIS-Express is not running. There are a few users with the same problem,
we will post again when we have an answer for the problem.
It might take a day or two.
I apologise for the delay

I am already running a localhost server, so can I use the Intranet method without affecting my regular localhost setup? I wouldn't mind if I can create a directory under my server documents root to do the Intranet method. Can you please answer?
Thanking you in advance.

Gary Smith,
Sorry for taking so long to respond.
Yes, you can, however there might be a small problem.
Money-Pal makes a copy of the config file which IIS-Express uses and then makes changes to that file in order to link to Money-Pal. Each time Money-Pal starts, it restarts IIS-Express using that copy of the config file.
Currently it leaves IIS-Express running so that it can restart quickly.
The problem might be that your other localhost server is unable to do what Money-Pal does and might be unable to start. There is a way to circumvent it if you can add the lines into the config file that Money-Pal uses and then all sites will allow connections at the same time.
Let us know if you need further advice.

Installed the files, extracted, then installed all to no avail. I am getting the error on webpage "http://www.localhost.com:8080/mp" - There is a start up icon of IIS Express on my system tray, however there is no preference to use Desktop or Intranet to run the program. I haven't even been able to open program to enter the email and the serial key for it. As far as I can tell, I've downloaded files, installed a programs icon to my C:\program files x86\ along with other program files that I am not able to use. What gives? Where or how can I open this program up and enter the credential to use the software?

I will pass... the initial cost of Quicken is cheaper (who knows if your computer will go south and this program lost? You would have to buy it to get your info back!). With Q I know Intuit will have all the updates I will ever possibly need, so buying a new version every other year as I do is well worth not switching. As much as I really hate Intuit (I am a former user and "ProAdvisor" of Quickbooks and its price gouging), they do have a reliant product in Quicken.
Thanks GAOTD, I will keep checking for other software I can try before buying.

Not really, You could just let us know and we can provide you with a new activation code.
That being said, we respect your choice to choose Quicken, so go well sir :-)

I installed and let it install IIS-express, IIS-express is showing in the task bar with the website running but when I start the program the browser opens and times out with a "The localhost page isn’t working - localhost redirected you too many times." alert.

The application has a fundamental failure - in settings and selecting "Currency" appropriate to the "Country and language" selected I note that Euro Zone countries that joined the euro still have their pre Euro currencies defined rather than the euro e.g. Ireland is set as the Irish Pound IEP.
I note that there is an option to select the European Euro however, just a little sloppy particularly if you are considering paying for the upgrade.

OK, I'm giving it a try.
Being concerned with seemingly having to enter all information through an internet browser, I disabled internet access and the program works fine. I know that's not conclusive, but appears not to be "calling" anyone or any other place but the computer as Money-Pal folks stated.

First of all when I was importing from Quicken I got 'dll host Error in ParseCat'.
I rebooted and did the Quicken export again, this time it worked. I then tried to import the file. It was uploaded but the thing is after I clicked 'Import' it just sits there with 'Connecting' on the browser tab going round and round and 'Waiting for localhost at the bottom of the screen.
Enough already, it;s been like that for over 2 hours not connected even.
And I do not like having to use the browser either!
I will remove it and stick with Quicken. Thanks anyway.

Installed effortlessly on a Win10, 64-Bit machine. Many features would make this easily useable anywhere as it handles all taxes, language options etc. Easily installed where ever I chose to install and has a nice, simple interface. Not having any problems running it. All files are kept local but I have the option to make available online so when I'm out and about, I can access over the web.

Not for me. But interested types can google or see BitsDuJour link to a paid version (guess was a Give at one point). Bits has it as unlimited license but only 1 year for updates, then it costs, unless someone runs another Give. Seems 3 versions related to this. Check the video for Quicken use. Seems to try to explain it can hook to you bank (like Mint and others do), and can be accessed via tablet, smartphone, etc. over Net to desktop. Doesn't see to feed into the program's site in any way from quick look. So not like it uses any Cloud related to the program's site. You would be free to tie into any usual Cloud (s) you use.
That's as far as I go with review searches. Thanks GOTD.

When I try to run the software, I receive a can't connect error. I've tried several times with two different browsers and also tried after I'd suspended the firewall and virus checker but I still get the connection error. I have no idea what the software looks like & whether it's good or bad because I can't run it.

John Saunders, just a quick question. Did you restart you OS? I have had this problem many times and its rather frustrating. But on the odd occasion the software has worked after restart. Also what other security do you have running in the background? Not teaching you to suck eggs as the expression goes, but download this http://processhacker.sourceforge.net/ and see what is actually running. Not all functions are visible. I have been using http://www.moneymanagerex.org/ this free software for years and its fine for my home finances

It's a local host 8080 connection error. I even tried downloading the trial software from their web site and I had the same error when I tried to run it. Any ideas what to do apart from giving up and deleting it?

John Saunders,
Did you accept to install IIS-Express halfway through the installation? If you don't then IIS-Express cannot run and you will get a 8080 error
Save | Cancel
pieter, Thanks, yes, and IIS-Express is installed. I just tried again and the same result. I don't even know why Money-pal tries to open a web site when I try to run it.
Save | Cancel
John Saunders,
Money-Pal is a desktop app but runs in a browser. So, the web site that you are talking about is Money-Pal trying to run on you desktop. It is not connecting to a server on the internet, it is connecting to a limited server on your desktop which is running under IIS-Express.
You can see IIS-Express running in the tray. If you right-click on the IIS-Express icon in the tray, you can see the website running by hovering the mouse over the web site icon.
What version of Windows are you running?
Save | Cancel
pieter, There is no IIS_Expres icon in the tray or in the group of hidden icons but it is shown in Task Manager as a Windows process. I'm using Windows 10.

John Saunders,
I have the same issue, can't get IIS to run, although I am on a networks with a Ubuntu Web Server and that uses port 8080 for Webmin.
I have tried changing the port that IIS runs on but even after changing the port still get the
"can’t establish a connection to the server at localhost:8080."

Sorry it isn't Webmin on 8080 - it is ISPConfig 3.

TK,
> but I'd be VERY concerned trusting private finacial records to IIS-Express hosted on a desktop operating system that could be accessed and attacked from the internet
You do not need to provide access to the internet. All firewalls by default block access from the internet and do not allow access to Money-Pal. You have to set up
1. Your firewall to allow access from outside
2. Your router to allow access to your computer.
Without either of these, people cannot get to your computer.
Furthermore you can setup IIS instead of IIS-Express for Money-Pal to use.
> I presume you incorporate some dynamic-DNS services client functionality to streamline connecting to a dynamicaly assigned public IP number from the internet too?
Yes, it can work with no-IP as an example.
You can use a SSL connection if you want to connect from outside just like any other web server on the internet.
Furthermore, Money-Pal requires you to login before you can use Money-Pal.
Money-Pal also does not connect to any banks at this stage, so it does not store any sensitive usernames and passwords.

Tony Bennett, Thanks very much Tony. I did try restarting my computer and also checked in Task Manager and IIS-express was running. Money Manager looks very good and I will try that. Could have been fate that led me to you and then it. thanks again.

There is a comparison page on their website comparing to Quicken, Mint, others. Says you can import OFX transactions. That's good. Will it produce reports a la Quicken? Can one search for transactions a la Quicken? Will it be kept up to date with each new tax year, even in US, a la Quicken (if you at least upgrade every few years)? The Quicken tax support is worthwhile. Though I can install and check some of the features I just mentioned, the ongoing updates can't be checked just by install.
Does it have the tax features of Quicken and how are they kept up to date?

It can do some reports (Quicken has a headstart). You can see some at

Yes, you can search
> Will it be kept up to date with each new tax year, even in US, a la Quicken (if you at least upgrade every few years)?
We intend to host a forum where users can upload the new tax templates per country. In this way users can support each other and we do not need to do that.

I like to download giveaways in a folder of my choosing but this seems to be too much for it. This is a bad sign especially in the light of other comments from people who have already installed it.
No way am I trusting my data to such a company.
Setup file deleted.
Save | Cancel
Dave J,
Actually, you are not trusting your data to Money-Pal. All data is stored on your computer. Money-Pal has no way of accessing the data on your computer.
Save | Cancel
The software company has no access to your data or passwords as they do not provide the cloud service. Money-Pal's data is stored on your computer or on the cloud that you set up.
Money-Pal can run on your desktop but can also be accessed over an intranet.

Checked out the website and noticed that there were no assurances given about how secure any date uploaded would be or any mention as to whether the data is encrypted. I wouldn't trust the details of my ill gotten gains (only joking) to an unknown company with no idea of how my data is stored or even were it is stored. I'll definitely pass on this.
Save | Cancel
DaveC,
The reason is probably because everything is stored on your own computer and Money-Pal cannot be responsible for your own data on your own computer. As no data is uploaded to any server, there is no need for Money-Pal to encrypt your data.
Save | Cancel
pieter, Thanks for clearing that up. Knowing that I'll happily give this a try.

You say this is aimed at small business... I've found no details about it's integration into various contries tax systems.. For example, can it produce a BAS as required in Australia?
Save | Cancel
Can it be used locally, without using the cloud? I keep all my backups on a separate hard drive. No financial stuff is going into the cloud thank you!
Save | Cancel
bertie11, Yes, you install it on your desktop. This is done by default. You access the program with a browser which may be a bit strange. The reason for this browser interface is that the program can also be used to function as server . This means that you can set it up to access Money-pal over an intranet or the internet with other mobile devices using the same user interface.
