These always look familiar. Is there some "video converter base" different developer use? ;)

wow, i'm so impressed with how easy it was to download and install this program, and then to register.

we have to go through so many bells and whistles, and shutting down our anti virus programs, etc etc, for a program that lasts for six months.

today we get a 'life time' license, and the whole thing was so easy and painless. thank you, thank you, thank you, for that!!

I tried this program on a short 1920x1080 video I recorded with my video camera. One problem I( found was the limited choice of frame dimensions, the max was 720 x 575, however if I choose Auto then it produces the same frame size as the original video.
I like the extras such as a subtitle option.
When I tried to trim the video that is a lack of frame by frame stepping so I can find exactly when I want the start and end positions of the video. It would be nice to be able to do this with the < and > keys.

Someone said that you can't change the codec, this is not true as there is a drop down list under advanced settings to do this, including H.254 It pays to explore the program more.

On the whole it produced a good video result.

Brian, you may change the resolution to 1920x1080 or much higer when you select HD video format from HD video category

I'll pass. The EULA says it phones home with computer and processing info.

Reply   |   Comment by sirpaul2  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

sirpaul2,

I read their EULA, on their WebPage, three times and found NOTHING about the software phoning home.
Please enlighten me where this info is.

Reply   |   Comment by GregF  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

GregF, It's in the EULA that pops up before installation - about a dozen clicks down on the scroll bar. The paragraph begins with "* AUTOMATIC COMMUNICATIONS FEATURES" and goes on to say it's used for: an update reminder (obviously not needed for this version), error collection, computer manufacturer, OS, RAM, time zone, audio , country, current language, etc.
It the 'etc.' that I'm not comfortable with.

Reply   |   Comment by sirpaul2  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

sirpaul2, What do you mean by saying "The EULA says it phones home with computer and processing info"

Reply   |   Comment by Harney  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Harney, Apparently, my response didn't get past the moderators. It's in the EULA that you get during setup.

Playing detective :

- The domain idealshare.net was created on 2013-02-06.
- The Wayback Machine lists its first iteration on June 17, 2013.
- The version number at that time was somehow already 4.1.9.4892.

Really?

I didn't know companies had to establish a domain when they start business and never change it. Learned something new. Thanks!

Reply   |   Comment by Bill Johnson  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Harry, This information shows it is at least a reliable company. For the domain has been for more than 5 years, let alone its company.

I tried a test file. Unfortunately, this has very primitive editing (cutting) facilities. I'm still using an old ARCSoft program (TotalMedia Extreme) as it's the best one I have seen so far. It isn't too reliable on Windows 10 now though.

This won't replace that. Editing a TV capture with ads would be a nightmare. Try cutting to a frame!

On their website it says that this program can convert TIVO files. I added such a file, it asked me for my MAC, hit ENTER, and the program immediately closed. Tried it again for good measure, same result.

Reply   |   Comment by phoe  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

.
[ phoe ],

Try actually entering the MAC of your TiVo, and let us know what happens.

A media access control address ( MAC address ) of a device is a unique identifier assigned to a network interface controller ( NIC ) for communications at the data link layer of a network segment. MAC addresses are used as a network address for most IEEE 802 network technologies, including Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

It appears that the key to unlocking the TiVo file is it's original MAC address where it was first permissioned ... so supposedly it can't be spread to another TiVo box and played elsewhere without equivalent or new permission.

I downloaded, installed and registered the program with no problems.
The features seam to all work correctly (even drag and drop seemed to work)
The only thing that I couldn't find was the capability to resize (not crop) the output file. Without the ability to resize the output I would have to use a second program to accomplish this.

Now I can use "7thShare" Which does this all in one program but I believe the output is limited to .mp4 which I use almost all the time anyway.

Reply   |   Comment by Sabio  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Sabio, You may resize your output file by change the video resolution, bitrate, video format etc.

I've seen this program under at least a dozen different brand names, and I usually keep one on my system along with other video editors. It's fine as a basic video converter and editor, but I wonder what the source of the code is. Are the companies (all Chinese I think) all associated with each other, or are they getting the code from some common open source?

Reply   |   Comment by Felix Crevat  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+33)

Felix Crevat,

From a long article I read by a Chinese-American who returned to explore roots/heritage, the majority of stuff is considered as if it's open source, whether that's code or electronics or product design etc. Copying a design, and sometimes attempting to improve it, or sometimes trying to reduce costs, e.g. by cutting corners, is super common.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+11)

Felix Crevat,
... and there are some more common ways how many programs get spread:

1. original developers sell the right to resell the software under mostly ever under a new brand and name (or by having bought an unlimited mass-license as Ashampoo doest with several programs...!)

2 the developers sell a development kit, which in reality is the complete an ready-to-use package, but which can easily be adopted.

And don´t underestimate how many small companies die/close an at their end they sell several right.

And finally: many code snippets and even complete programming code is crudely stolen - and some "companies" don´t hesitate to make "their own product" out of this

BTW: meanwhile it is very well known, how to easily get your "new" programs work with a minimum of effort with existing kits (here: Av... and Qt... libs)

Installed the program, registered etc. All went fine.
Converted a few video's; result - some good, some without sound, the other without screen.
Not investigated why.

Warning!

Despite the generally positive reputation, users have reported that the site ahead may contain adult material on some pages. Make sure you want to open it or click ‘Learn More’ for details.

Louis Van Gendt,
"users have reported that the site ahead may contain adult material on some pages."
It is possible that people put some files on Stack, that are adult or dangerous.
But I can assure you, that I don't do that.
Therefore I did create a separate Stack to use for GOTD-files.
So no EXE, no adult, no copyrighted material.
And there are some files, that I have downloaded from the internet, but from sites, I gave the link here.
And also I took some photo's from tree's to do some photo-examples. All taken by me with my phone.
Also possible that some people just say that the site is wrong. Just say it. No proof.
Some years ago someone said, that it was not sure, that the converted file was converted with the GOTD-program of that day. It could also be done with some other program. Why should I put a file, made by another program than the GOTD-program?
And also that the file could be found on the internet. Yes, of course I put it there.
The only thing I can give is my word, that I will not put any stupid material on the internet. Nothing else.

Reply   |   Comment by Ootje  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+16)

Harney, I did see only a free trial on the site.
GOTD gave some other program's to download from a lot of sites.
Also there are a lot of free stuff to download from the internet. And also sites to do the download and conversion.

Does this Software support cut/trim without complete reencoding (smart rendering)?

Lilien, Yes

Reply   |   Comment by Peter  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Lilien,

"Does this Software support cut/trim without complete reencoding (smart rendering)?"

Short answer = no -- editing is an added feature & not what these converters are designed for. Cut editing is easier technically speaking, since cuts & joins are only performed at key frames, and while it's probably possible using the ffmpeg these converters are based on, it's difficult & iffy, using scripts written for the specific task. To perform so-called "Smart Rendering", the software used must fully understand & be able to duplicate the original encoding method & settings, which often means an app will only smart render video that it's encoded itself.

How it works... The video in between key frames must be generated -- a key frame has a complete image, while the in between frames only record what's changed since the key frame. Generating those in between frames isn't hard, but, if you're going to cut or join video segments anywhere besides at key frames, that small portion of the videos will have to be re-encoded, so the in between frames match the new video. That's not a big deal for a video converter, since everything will be re-encoded anyway, but to smart render, that small, re-encoded patch & all video segments Must have matching encoding methods and settings.

Seems to be rather old , which seems to mean, no new H265 codec included (supported?).
If this is true, one can not convert/cut/do_any_other_work videos which were recorded from the newerTV DVB-T2 standard...?

Can the developer or anyone else verify this?

Reply   |   Comment by wosa  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

wosa, it supports encode h.265 and decode h.265, please check the profile.

Reply   |   Comment by Harney  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+32)

Harney,
Thank you: now I installed and could verify

To add some notes now:.
- neat and sweet and fast on my machine
- even had NOT to install it but just unpack it
- very slim after having compressed all files with UPX compressor (but NEVER compress qgif4.dll and qjpeg4.dll) and everything worked after compression!
- full-screen mode while viewing a movie works fine on the tested file types.

To me this IS really a keeper! - even more, because of H265 Code support!

Thanks goes to you and the vendor!
