BTW you can change the icons easily after you have assigned them once. You don't need to change the folder settings, you just need to copy and paste a new icon to replace the old one. Then the folder will use the new icon.

You can do it manually inside Windows.

If you use colourful icons all over the place, then you come back to square one.
Where is the file that I want?
They are all colourful picturesque icons.
Software like FolderIco is meant to be used sparingly.
So that visually, you can spot the special file easily.
It must stand out from the rest.
I have chosen NOT to use any such folder icon painting software.
So as not to interfere with the Windows system as it is designed.

Not able to activate...getting activation failed, try again later, but it seems to still work to change folder colors. Fingers crossed that using it this way doesn't end up messing up my folders.

Just like another post --
Ran Activate.exe to register (while the program was closed per the readme) but failed to connect multiple times: Failed to connect. Please try again later.

After several hours and many tries the registration completed.
I hope the program will serve me well.

Really quite impressed, downloaded and installed with no problems. Activated as per instructions in the readme file then read the detailed program instructions which didn't quite agree with the application in places but it didn't take a genius to work out what to do. Downloaded and unzipped all the free folder icons, batch processing them into their respective identifying folders and under one newly created directory Folders. Dead simply to use, I can only think those who have problems don't read the instructions and don't really understand how files are laid out on a hard drive. No problem in recommending, works great.

Tony, It's sad that YOU think you're the only one that can read AND follow simple instructions, sir.

Mick, Thank you, you are very kind. Perhaps you decide to put a negative spin on it when it would have been so easy to be positive.

i used folderIco for years and it worked like a charm ...but one day i wondered if i can get the same efficiency from a free SW and i discovered "folder painter" which can be used as an alternative if you are looking for a freeware...

mm155, Thank you for giving the name of an alternative program, my friend. I've just downloaded it, and will install it shortly.

mm155, I love it, mate. You should see what I'm doing with folder colours and the like. ;-)

It's reassuring to find that there are SOME people who will actually help others out on here. Sadly, Giveawayoftheday and Teorex have proven themselves absolutely useless in that respect.

Yet again, another activation that simply gives me the following dialog box:

"Giveaway of the Day

Fatal error: key is invalid."

and not one ounce of help from Giveaway of the Day from days ago.

Mick, I have noticed problems sometimes lately when I download from GOTD using a Chrome-based browser (Vivaldi). When I download instead using Opera all is good. This is not a problem when downloading from any other site so I'm not sure what is up.

If the size of your download does not match the file size posted on this page, you might be having the same issue. HTH.

I've learned over the years here that any program from Teorex is worth jumping through hoops to try, and worth buying. Thank you Teorex and GOTD.

Mick, So you downloaded the zip, extracted it to a new folder. Then from new folder you ran setup, left the program closed, clicked on "activate" from the new folder, and that popped up?
Almost sounds like an antivirus/malware prevention program is preventing certain applications from running.

Bebop17, Thank you for your response, my friend. I've downloaded the Wrapped download files from Giveaway of the Day using Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Waterfox (a Firefox derivative) and checked that the download size is the same as what's advertised on this page. I believe the 'problem' lies with the Wrapper that Giveawayoftheday uses. I've even contacted Giveawayoftheday through giveaway@giveawayoftheday.com but they've, so far, not come up with a solution. They've advised me to check that my Antivirus software isn't running ... which it can't be when I attempt to run the Activate.exe and Activate.gcd files in Safe Mode. I've resorted now to contacting Teorex as, like yourself, I've appreciated giveaways offered by them, to see if they can help.

Mick, Are you run as a user with Admin rights? The "activator" is essentially adding an entry into the Windows Registry. If you don't have admin rights, or you have some sort of "protection" software running, there is a very good chance that it is unable to add that entry into the registry and why you are getting the message you are.

I've been using FolderIco 5.1 that was a GOTD of 12.01.2017. Can I install this version over 5.1? Any real advantage from doing so?

This is very difficult to add a set of icons in a folder. There are some 20 folders with icons in them in my /documents/Icons/*icons Inside each is anywhere from 3 to 150 icons. It is far from intuitive and seems archane way to add group of icons.

Reply   |   Comment by Spam Sorenson  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-8)

followup, The help file on the site was not clear or very helpful. It should allow D-N-D Icons to the library. Also when trying to add icons by using the + Add button and selecting a icon folder it shows "No items match your search."

It seems not to allow users to add folders of icons to the library.

In other words and simply stated, adding icons is 'one at a time' or not working at all.

Spam Sorenson, The program works great and exactly as its supposed to. There isn't a problem with the application, it works perfectly.

Reply   |   Comment by Tony  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-5)

Spam Sorenson, To add a folder you have to chose a folder and use the select all command to chose all icons and then just click open and all icons will be read and added ;)

Installed via Setup.exe. Activated with Activate.exe
To check if yours is activated, search for FolderIco in the start menu, and click on the Help menu, it should not show "enter serial key" menu item.

Very refreshing to not have to go to the publisher's website to register or fill out a form to get a key.

The fully, easily customizable context menu is awesome.
