If you really need to convert an AVI file, avidemux is free and open source. Despite it's name, it can do essentially the same thing this software does, but supports pretty much every file type and codec out there.

ffmpeg can do all these tasks with a lot more, and not only on AVI but also on MP4 / MKV / MOV ...

If you don't know how to use COMMAND LINE, just search for a GUI interface for ffmpeg.

In the days when AVI format was popular then this program would have been useful and popular but now we have formats such as mp4 that are very common, making AVIToolbox out of date.

KCSoftwares was always a stalwart for me.
Sadly no more.
It's quite sad.

Based on comments and the name of the software, since it is only for AVI, will not bother downloading, let alone installing. No mp4? come one. Get with it.

Didn't think people still used AVI, they need to move away from it in terms of storage (saving/uploading). A few minutes of AVI can take up gigabytes, whereas MP4 or other formats can take up megabytes.

If you can't change recording software or your device only records in AVI, then you should convert your AVI to some other format. The most popular format to use is MP4 for videos and MP3 for audio.

If I ever need to convert a video I use VLC media player https://www.videolan.org/

Joel, as with its name, isn't VLC a media player and not a converter or editor ?

Reply   |   Comment by Frank  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

@ Frank,

VLC is a like a Swiss army knife. It'll do many audio/video operations - conversion being only one thing. Go to their website and look at the feature list.

Frank, VLC is both a player and has the ability with its open source codecs to convert videos on the flr or to file because it also is able to stream your content (video/music/pictures) to any DLNA/UPNP enabled device (Xbox,PS4,Wii,switch,fire stick TV,ruku,Appel TV,ETC)

Frank, it is indeed a media player but it is also a converter. VLC is a very useful tool, it can also download videos via internet URL.

Frank,
When you look at under the covers, VLC is much more than a video player. Within the first pull-down tab (tot left side) called 'Media' you'll find the "Convert / Save" option, which will bring up the panel where you can do your conversion to a variety of video outputs by making your choice in something named "Profile". The interface for this is not as straightforward/clear as a regular video converter, but the functionality to do conversions exists.

Joel, Format factory does Everything and quite well. Best part, it is free. ALL formats! Been using for years. Only gets better with time. I can't believe it is free.

Downloaded, installed and registered all fine. I tried to open two different AVI file with the same result and Error Message "Indice ImageList incorrect".

Gave in a fair test but failed miserably. Tried several perfectly good videos for which I have codec's installed on my machine, it wouldn't open one but instead provides a link to their free codec checker which one approves to scan your computer. No chance, I don't like honey traps. Uninstalled.

The program works only with AVI files (according to its name). For other formats you need other software...

Tried it with three different AVIs which play fine on my pc. The program froze and had to be ended by using the task manager. Uninstalled.

This program has the only good feature - it's easy to register. Then it just cries out for codecs.
There are many other good programs, including free cutter-joiner, that support many formats.
I consider this proposal to be poor.

Karol Salwa, thanks. Is there a free one anyone recommends for getting a photo out of a video?

Reply   |   Comment by Marc  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Marc, Try VLC, it's free, loaded with features, but (unfortunately) not that user-friendly to use. Yet, once you know it's whereabouts.... you're in business for a great tool! And it's free... I said it before, but worth repeating!

Marc, np. Free Video Cutter Joiner 10.8 do cięcia i łączenia a zdjęcie można zrobić aplikacją systemową.

Thanks to this, my nostalgia for Windows XP has been quenched. If the developer can make the UI stepback to Windows 98 style, I will love it more.
