It came in WinZip & said I need buy winzip to get to file. I tried to use evaluation version but it wasn't clickable to work. So I'd haft buy that software in order to open this Fast Video Downloader. Really frustrating & disappointing.

download a FREE program 7-zip. been using it for years to unzip programs and files

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

venus fortner, you apparently have WinZip installed on your PC. If you don't want to purchase it, just uninstall it. Windows has ZIP compression features built-in, but because WinZip is installed, it is overriding the built-in functionality of Windows. Another option is to download 7-zip as Mike has indicated. It's free, open source software, and is perfectly safe.

In any case, uninstall WinZip. No point in leaving software installed that you aren't using. That just leaves another possible entry point for hackers to gain access to your system, should a flaw or exploit ever be found in the WinZip software.

I thought that I would get the full 366 days with the download but it has only given me 171 days which was what I had left with the previous version even though I uninstalled the old version. Disappointed as I like it.

Just like other video downloaders, this downloader does not download private videos from Facebook. So, why is any sort of payment justified for this software, when online video downloaders are a dime a dozen (most of them are free) on the Internet?

This is a competent downloader, which does support a decent amount of sites.

However, when compared to Ant Download manager, it is slower to download and convert, doesn't have the tight and varied browser integration and does not support as many sites.

I use this as a backup for when ANTDM does not on occasion work as hoped.

It's also way too expensive for what is essentially a one trick pony.

This has been offered several times in the past, including 3 times last year -- thank you FastPCTools and GOTD.

However, I wonder if the behavior in my comment #40 still exists as described on the Feb. 2019 page:

https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/fast-video-downloader-3-1-0-22/

I suspect it still does (but won't know for sure until several days have passed), as after installing it earlier today I examined Task Scheduler and once again found a daily task to launch FastVD_UpdateSchedule which I then set to "Disable".

As before (in February, 2019) this was after un-checking the FVD option to "Start application at startup".

It's possible the effects of accepting an update may be to once again reset FVD to resume launching at startup and to re-enable that scheduled update task. However, since I'm now at the latest version I can't test that today.

Otherwise, I still think it's a good downloader to complement Ant Download Manager and others mentioned here.

Got this same version from a previous giveaway. I tried it on sites other than those listed in the description, and found that in many cases it did the job. I like this product, but even at the discount price offered here, it is too expensive for occasional use. If they would offer a lifetime plan at a fair price, I would be glad to purchase it.

I have tons of different video download software. Most work great, some work OK. I've been hunting for a LONG time for something that will download videos from the _Movies and Shows_ section of YouTube. I'm not expecting the software to be able to grab the paid content, as that would require being logged into YouTube and to agree to paying for the video, which is not within the capabilities of most of this type of software. What I am looking for is something that can download the "Free to Watch" movies in that section as you don't need to be logged in to view them. This is what I use to test the software's usefulness to me.

I had high hopes for this, and it is yet another video downloader that has failed to grab what I want. I have yet to find a single video downloader that will download a WORKING copy of a movie from the "free to Watch" area of YouTube's Movies and Shows section. Like most other software I have tried, it will download the entire movie without a problem, but only the first 5 seconds of the video can be seen, then after that everything is scrambled.

Does anybody have a suggestion for software that can grab from that section of Youtube that actually works?

FeMaster, Have you tried 4K Video Downloader? It is pretty good at grabbing stuff from YouTube.

Reply   |   Comment by Ray Rooney  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

FeMaster,

No downloader program I've seen can handle all the sites or download tasks you may throw at it. But for a few annoyances -- like the aggressive auto-update that you can't disable in the FVD Preferences section -- I've found this program to be pretty capable -- another useful arrow to have in your quiver. It has done well in many varied cases where I've used it. I'm not a big fan of their licensing model . . . but they do these giveaways on a fairly regular basis.

That said, and as I've noted here before, my first-choice 'Go To' downloader for YouTube and a number of other sites remains TubeDigger. 25 bucks for a one-time license, (much less obtrusive) updates indefinitely, freedom to install it on whatever computers you own: can't beat that with a stick ! I use a lot of different software, and you can't pay me enough to praise something, whether that praise is warranted or not.

Ray Rooney, 4K Video Downloader is better at downloading from YouTube than HD Video Factory Converter Factory Pro, which I also have. One real plus of 4K Video Downloader is that it allows
you to download subtitle files.

Fast Video Downloader sometimes will download YouTube files that 4K Video Downloader and HD Video Factory Converter Factory Pro cannot, and for this reason alone, it is a keeper.

Fast PC Tools,

Well, this is just an update to my service inquiry. I sent an email to Fast PC Tools with the information that they requested on the day of the giveaway, 4 days ago, and I haven't heard back from them at all. I did not even receive an auto generated response. I'm not anticipating any response from them, since this qualifies for no support anyway, but I was hoping that they would have at least responded once since they are the ones that requested me send them an email.

Not great. Downloads are hit and miss. The 'paste URL' function doesn't appear to work - you have to search by name. I tried four videos and got a 50% hit rate. Two failed with an 'Error: this video may be inappropriate for some users' message. I know what you're thinking but these were clips from a horror film on YouTube not anything more, err, salacious.
The interface is poor and I the 'best quality' setting doesn't always select the highest resolution.
Finally, why does it have to run in the background?
I think I'll be sticking to 4k Downloader.

It's amazing to come here at 3 am and see 5 comments and the, can you download Twiter question/post, has 3 no's in the, "did you find this question useful" question.

I used to thank giveawayoftheday.com (shameless plug) the company offering the program and as always, our great members who not only test these giveaway's hard but also, take the time to post the good, the bad and the ugly and I would get -21 no's.

I don't get it, how do questions about a program (not my thanks post) bother someone enough to vote on it.

Installed, and after running, the first thing it did was update itself, but still shows the same version.
If used primarily for YouTube, please note that they do tweak their platform slightly to break third party applications. Ant Downloader which was recently given away has broken due to this. They don't want people simply downloading videos, as they lose ad revenue. Its also worth noting that by simply downloading videos, the uploader loses out on ad revenue too. This can hurt the small uploaders 'just getting by'.
Of note is the lack of conversation of videos to MP3s. Finding music videos or audiobooks is useful, but converting these to MP3s to listen 'offline' is a useful benefit.
EDIT: Looking at the website, this wasn't a feature in this version but after registering the application, this feature is available. Go figure... so ignore whats on their website. Sigh.
The application looks good and clear with an option to download 'best available' videos or HD 1080, HD 720, etc.
When I gave it Spandau Ballet to download, it only gave me the option to download 'Small' (why give me an option to download when there is only one option to select?) but Ant Download Manager found two sizes - 144p and 240p. Unsure which one would be 'Small' as far as this software is concerned. And why did it not find both?
Its also worth noting this software is only for a year. Seems most software is like this now. Gone are the days where you purchased software and it was yours.
Ant Download Manager gives clearer 'feedback' on what you're actually downloading, and is slightly cheaper, and of course, there are loads of other alternatives, including online downloaders.

Chris,

If you want a program primarily for YouTube, Greentree Software makes YTD Downloader that works consistently. Have had it for a few years now. of course they do have a free version. Pro version costs about $29.95 annually which I personally think is worth it because of some of the stuff it does automatically instead of manually. Just my two cents.

I am not affiliated with Greentree software in any way whatsoever.

Chris, Just used Ant Downloader to download a Youtube Video. Works as always. Don't know why you say it was broken.

phoe monroe, the latest version? I used v1.17.1 which was given away here, and it failed. I contacted Mr Ant (not his real name...) who confirmed it was an issue, and released a fix. However, due to the 'licensing', updating reverted the application from pro to 'free', which was a bit pants...

Chris, I have 1.17.4 paid version.

phoe, Then yes, that would work. It was fixed in 1.17.4. The version given away here was working, but then stopped working.
An excellent program though - will probably buy the pro version.

JDownloader2 does not download clips from all websites. Sometimes even when you try to 'manually' input a link from a 'not-well-known' site you get a list of the parts of the page/clip but not the clip itself. Btw, 'RealDownloader' from RealNetworks will download youtube vids...and it's free. I use it almost daily.

Chris, Mr. Ant should please do us a favor and let GOATD give us the fixed version, its no use installing the 171 Version and it is broken within a few weeks, when we are supposed to 'test it' for one year. promise broken, Program broken!

Great downloader from a past GOTD but I did not register it. It is an unregistered version. If I download a License from the enclosed link will it make it a Trial Copy Program as I already have this version on my computer from a previous GAOD? It is a Trial Copy but not registered. It asks me to Register?

Joe, Get the license and use it to register. You will be able to use the full functionality of application for 1 year.

Can it download from m3u8 streaming? I am currently using Eagleget but it does not have that option.
