This has an annoying/nasty habit of resetting the choice made for Options > Settings > Start application at startup.

I haven't yet found the scheduled task (or other startup item) where this must be getting reset, but it seems to occur about every week or so, after a restart.

That is, if a few days (a week?) have elapsed since logging into my PC user account, then upon performing a restart (or power off/on cycle) and once again logging into the PC user account (or maybe it happens if I simply log off then back in?), it

1)automatically launches the browser to their "purchase" page (sometimes I don't want the browser launched at all if I'm trying to diagnose/deal with another Windows issue),
2) launches Fast Video Downloader itself,
3) changes my options choice by rechecking the box again for "Start application at startup", and
4) placing a fresh "Fast Video Downloader" icon on the Desktop (yet again).

I'd much rather it not do these insistent things. It makes me wonder what the behavior would be if I had purchased the product. Would it periodically auto-launch to advertise other products or services? I find it discouraging.

I will say that performance-wise it has helped download some website videos, others not at all (about par as compared with other applications in my experience; hence, I have several to choose from), so "thanks!".

It says here free application updates, but once updated, it turns to trial. It also keeps adding itself to startup even after disabled.

(This page may have changed since yesterday -- I can't recall if it listed a special GOTD-only purchase price.)

If purchased during this GOTD offer period, is there any special pricing?

If purchased, what is the duration of the license (or would it be a time-limited "subscription")?

During the duration of the license, would it include all major updates, or only minor updates, or possibly lifetime updates?

Thanks, GOTD & Fast PC Tools, for this nice offer... and for extending it another day!

Thanks for program.

Tried a short video from my Twitter feed. It downloaded it, but the quality of the video is poor. The picture breaks up or stops in places.

Any tips on how to improve the quality of a Twitter video?

Fast PC Tools, thank you for a very nice tool to use for a period of time. Registration turnaround time was quick, as was my test download. Once those supplemental files are downloaded (for conversion) the downloaded YT audio & video files are smoothly joined automatically.

The only gripe is that list windows are pretty cramped. For example, the downloaded list is in a small window and the resizable columns won't expand/scroll beyond the window, making it impossible to read the entire text. Very frustrating, but overall it's a nice app to have!

I almost did not download it because I have Youtubedownloader that was still working a few weeks ago. However, I am so glad I did download it because Youtube Downloader (YTD) does not work on Youtube anymore even with the update I downloaded tonight to see if it still works.

Fast Video Downloader does work on Youtube and does a pretty decent job. A keeper. I hope they do offer it again before the 367 days are over.

I received the registration code via email in about 3 seconds. No problem at all inserting that into the registration box; it immediately listed it as registered. (And no issues with my anti-virus program.) (I'm Win7Pro x64)
NOTE: This giveaway program is valid for 366 days only. One nice touch is that it shows on the main program how many days are left.

Downloaded fine...installed...sluggishly & registered with a bunch of "not responding" by the app while it was doing its thing. But ok, fine it got there in the end.

You really need to make the app more "responsive" during registration~at least. It locking up is something a paid user wouldn't want to go through & frankly shouldn't happen.

Once all that was out of the way i tried out YouTube

This file; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfB84kB_CLw

On "best available" setting. 1 hour 4 mins 6 secs length. 2547.83MB in size. Downloaded in a couple minutes as an MP4@1920x1080.

Also pulled another 3min video off YT with subtitles.

I do like the auto-paste but also good that its optional, save pasting random other links. The one thing i noticed was to use options like Open Folder you have to checkbox the video file. I dunno, maybe it's just me but shouldn't Highlighting the file be enough? Play was greyed out the whole time, no matter what i did. Any ideas on that?

Also clicking the icon in the taskbar with the app open will not minimize the app, it will only bring the app forward into focus. Closing into the notification area could be annoying for some also.

Yet to tinker with conversion up & down but will do later after dinner.

Cheers all

Greets from New Zealand

Using Windows 7 64 bit
Downloaded problems as it was flagged by my anti virus as a virus and did not have right permissions to access file.

Went to properties changed permissions to administrator and still a no go.
Went to actual website and downloaded their copy and same results.
Finally Turn off anti virus and download went fine and installed ok the file from their website.

Upon install it did a update and i used reg code given it activated ok. The Reg Code came very fast in the email.
Tried 2 downloads right away from YouTube and all went well and download quality was superb!

Just out of curiosity I went to a movie site that i have an account for and thought i would give this program a whirl there and to my surprise it actually started to download the movie files off that site. and just to be clear the site is not NetFlix it is another.

The downloads off of Youtube were both 600 and 500 meg files both downloded and converted in a very fast time and each file was approx a 2 and 3 hr file to watch.

The Movie file Downloaded 1.7 gig file and the quality was great! I am very impressed and will be able to make a nice Digital Movie Collection To Bad the License is only for a year.

Thanks GOTD and Fast PC TOOLS for todays Software

If you want to know my wishlist, it's this: When I click the close button, I expect a program to close, not minimize with an icon in the notification area running in the background. You should at minimum make this a setting that can be turned off. Also, I don't know why I had so much trouble pasting the reg number in, bu 4 times when I clicked the register button, the last group of numbers disappeared and I got a invalid number message, For whatever reason, the 5th time it let me register. I'm using Win 8.

downloaded and installed this on Vista and yes it does dive right into several update downloads that may be cancelable but I chose not to cancel the updates and that may be why it becomes able to download youtube videos ok.
I chose to see what the restrictions were on the unregistered version and it seems perfectly usable as is with the limits not being on the core functionality but on value added features that can be got by without them. Personaly I would disable the start at windows startup option especially the way the update optionoccours without asking. No idea if the giveaway license includes future updates for the duration of the license but for me leaving it unregistered is just fine. I can use xmedia recode if I need to recode downloaded video or rip out just the audio stream...

Reply   |   Comment by TK  –  7 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

TK, what it does at first start is a one-time setup by downloading and unpacking some prequisites into the installation folder that are required for the program to function properly, like ffmpeg (for conversion i guess) or the videohelper (for Youtube) and Visual C++ 2010.

Prequisites: https://i.imgur.com/zQ0lbyH.png

In regards to updates, i had a previous license activated and it was still active after updating to the newest version today, so updates work just fine in the one year period.

In regard to free vs. paid features, there is a older but detailed comment here from last time when it was given away: https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/fast-video-downloader-3-1-0/#comment-581911

Kimberly McGuire, it needs to download and install/unpack some prequisites into the installation folder first before you can fully use the program, this procedure is a one-time thing.

Prequisites: https://i.imgur.com/zQ0lbyH.png

So my guess is that the program either lacks the proper permission when it's bein run or there is no proper firewall rule for the program.

So what you need to do is run FastFVD as Administrator from the Desktop shortcut after creating a firewall rule for FastVD.exe in the installation folder first.

After the update is finished, you also need to create a firewall rule for videohelper.exe in the installation folder.

The easiest way to find these files is by right-clicking the Desktop shortcut and select "Open file location".

Neil Veganhead,
If so, that must be some new behavior, as I don't recall the prior ver. 3100 doing that. (?)

Had kind of hit a brick wall on YT with several downloaders, due to the changes mentioned. All I was grabbing were promos or intro commercials. If that situation stands, it will greatly devalue the apps in this capture category. (Screen recording is something else entirely, and markedly inferior to actual download. Maybe better than nothing, if that's all you can do with a given video clip. But there are loads of free screen recorders around . . . )

The following comment is based on the previous version, since I haven't tried this one yet. As someone who is frequently critical of software -- especially giveaways, which are often free for very good reason in terms of their actual value -- I have to say that this turned out to be one of the best. So, good to see it being offered again.

Works well with several sites including facebook, but I do not know why it's impossible to download a Youtube video. Each time I have an error message "Error input string was not in correct format .." When I use Youtube byclick with the same address no error, the download is done correctly.

Reply   |   Comment by Detenova  –  7 months ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Detenova, I wondered why they didn't include youtube in the description... Youtube changed their web interface for videos after they started their subscription service and most youtube downloaders ceased to function. Including all previous youtube downloaders that have apeared on here. e.g. Allavsoft, Ant downloader or freeware Atube all fail to download youtube any more. I do have a cripple/nagware downloader that has been updated to download youtube videos but in order to not tell youtube which program to examine to defeat downloaders again I cannot make its name public. As that would make it more likely that youtube will change protocols and make youtube offline media access more difficult.
I just tried the latest download of youtube byclick and it won't install under vista with installer throwing an error alert about a signature mismatch between the MSI and EXE and when trying it on latest feature update of Win10 it installs ok BUT refuses to download anything at all declaring the 0 hours trial has ended... and demanding we go premium without even being able to test if it works at all! I have never installed the program on any of my machines prior to trying it today.

Phillip, Thanks, some will work as they are actively supported or are not so fussy about the syntax they have to parse from the youtube data files and so are less prone to fall over on the slightest coding change by youtube. But as IDM free offering is only a trial I'll be giving that one a miss.

This did not work for me. It installed easily, but did not run properly. It wanted to update and do a complete install routine each time it started. Tried to uninstall using Window's settings/control panel uninstaller, but tray icon remained even after reboot and slowed the system through frequent updates. May need to backtrack using Windows restore points, but would like a reliable uninstaller for this program.

Dave,
I got a pop-up that asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the Pro Version or continue with the 'lesser' version. So something might be blocking your pop-up, otherwise you would not see it. Tell you what, close the program. Restart but not reinstall. After it restarts, head on over to the "Settings" on the top right. Click on it, go to 'Register' and enter you key. This way you can register the program in a different manner. If it all goes well, you should see in the VERY top of the window '366 days left'. If it doesn't work...post your solution!

walt, NOT TRUE several youtube downloaders ceased functioning after youtube changed their system to include a subscription service, only some downloaders have updated, some payware downloaders and freeware downloaders are yet to update their youtube parsing code. Ant Downloader giveaway has ceased functioning on youtube as has Allavsoft, even the latest trial downloader no longer offers to download youtube files but instructs to use the REC screen and audio capture utility instead. Atube downloader also has not been updated to new coding either and probably won't be since the developer seems inactive on all sites they apear to have a presense.

Bob, just installed the "free" 4k video downloader and it was unable to parse the available videos from a youtube video URL suggesting it is in need of updating to counter the latest counter measures implimented to make the youtube subscription service a necesity.

TK,

I just checked on YOUTUBE:

1. Free ADM - Chrome (registered GOTD) still works today.
2. Allavsoft that I bought also works.

gya, I just installed the ADM giveaway 1.11.0 on my windows 10 laptop and when adding a NEW youtube URL to download it fails to retrieve the list of available video and audio files for that URL with an alert box stating:
"Sorry, the downloader could not get Video links. VT:Youtube decipher error."

If I install over the top the current release version 1.11.4 which offeres pro features for a time limited trial it does retrieve all the video and audio files associated with the same youtube URL and lets me select the highest resultion video on offer and it downloads the video only mp4 file and then gets the mp4 audio track and inserts the audio track into the main video mp4 file.

If I then switch back to the Giveaway Pro edition promo executable while it won't retrieve the list of media files available it will redownload the previously chosen file that is in the download list.

If I install the 1.11.4 current release over the OLD giveaway installation the Pro trial has expired and the program reverts to the FREE edition with all the limitations such as no ability to select the HD and FHD resolutions without upgrading to paid Pro license but it again will present the various media files and grey out the resolutions not supported in the Free edition.

The Allavsoft I have tried is the free trial offered for download from their website which is version 3.17.1.6994 whereas the giveaway build was 3.16.1.6790 neither the unregistered latest version or the registered giveaway version on either windows 10 or Vista laptops are able to parse and therefore download new youtube URL media... It still works for other services that I could name but do not want to draw attention to it and risk losing that to another coding countermeasure like happened with the giveaway prior to the last one.
Still not the same experience that you are getting, I'll just have to assume some obscure bug or version/license differences that give inconsistent results, thanks for your reply though:)

TK, I don't have any problems to download the original YouTube files (also in Full HD) without a screen recorder. 4k Video Downloader does it's job.

TK, sigh... went back to the Allavsoft trial latest version instance half an hour later and looks like it eventually figured out how to download the video from youtube, so looks like the current version has been fixed just the older giveaway version fails to complete a youtube download attempt falling back to telling me to use the REC tool.
Could youtube have added some kind of time delay that some downloaders encounter as an automated site ripper defence and older version times out waiting for the server and the new version waits a bit longer for a response... paah doesn't really matter there are still several options to download youtube videos. Found out that the old instance of the new 4K downloader that even reported errors with the two videos I tried to download eventually did download the requested videos while I wasn't looking.... I give up!
