Suggestion: add an initial, automated Walk-Through widget that runs automatically upon the software 's installation and first use, introducing new users to the main features of the software, ending with where and how to set up one's own profile data file in place of the initially-installed test file (and with an option to skip the Walk-Through, for those not wanting or needing it).

Please advise.

What a wasted opportunity, the first thing I tried was adding Gmail with a generated app, it couldn't do that and generated a script error, so if it can't even do the basics what is the point and it doesn't bode well for the newer version, this is a bad PR exercise all round.

Even the update wasn't functioning, they could have given away a more recent version that made you want to keep using it rather than something that stopped your desire at the door.

Tried every which way to get the license code to work but every time I enter it, either copy or paste or enter it manually, it comes up as invalid. Too bad too because I used to love using this years ago and was looking forward to trying it again.

If you have used the free 8.x version so far, don't even try to install this old Pro version, because 7.66 cannot open the .epim file created in your free EPIM 8.x version
And the version promoted here is so old that it doesn't even work with google services, because they reject it as "unsecure app".

I got the same script error that other have reported. I have another email client that is about five years old (Chaos Software), and it connects without any problems. So, just because the software is a couple of years old is no excuse. Software from 2018 and it's STILL not ready for prime-time!

Isn't it senseless to ask "How would you improve EssentialPIM Pro 7.66?" if the version is 2 years old?

I am very disappointed that no-one from Astonsoft has come on here to put peoples minds at rest regarding the shortcomings of this offering. i commented earlier as i was able to carry out some simple tasks and it seemed to be quite intuitive but when you dig deeper into the works, so to speak, you discover that all is not well.
I doubt ANYONE has managed to link it to their email account and it DOES NOT sync properly at all.
VERY buggy so I wil be uninstalling having wasted my time.

ASTONSOFT WHERE ARE YOU?

I was so excited when I saw Essential PIM as a GiveAway, because I always wanted to give this program an extended try.

But then I noticed that this version is a couple of years old and because Google has changed it's security settings, it won't do synching with Android. So therefore my enthusiasm quickly vanished - or rather imploded.

Sometimes it is better for a company's reputation to abstain from giving away a crippled old version.

Reply   |   Comment by Binser  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+37)

Binser, agreed. I recently moved all my notes from ePIM (manually, unfortunately) and uninstalled it after having used it for years on a previous machine. I had the latest free version on my new Win 10 installation and was nagged incessantly to upgrade it, in spite of setting all possible options to not be asked again (the standard version was enough for my use). Seeing that they are promoting an old version which is now crippleware means I'll be skipping this offer which I'd otherwise be excited to try.

Reply   |   Comment by whisperly  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Binser, you might be right. For those wishing to test the latest version, please see our reply to comment #14 and to #15.
Those who however do not need synchronization features will likely find this offer quite attractive.

Appreciate free software but old version with some things missing is unfortunate. Haven't tried it yet for EssentialPIM, but it is not uncommon that things like Android sync would require 'matching' versions so what's available on Google Play could possibly not be compatible.

Reply   |   Comment by RG  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+14)

RG, if needed we can provide anyone with a link to one of the previous Android EPIM versions that worked and synced well with the 7.66 WinEPIM version offered here.

I do appreciate the generous free offer today.
But just a friendly reminder that version 7.66 was released back on June 9, 2018. Current version of EssentialPIM Pro is 8.64

Again, thank you GOTD Team/Astonsoft

Make sure that you go in to the options and shut off the automatic check for updates.

If you do not sooner or later you will end up updating by accident and kill the free license....

A couple other thoughts:

The version that is included today is already past its sell date this is version 7.66 while the update said they are on currently on 8.4? Not sure how much this matters. It does depend on what the updates are, if they are just additional functions not really an issue. However if they are security updates then it very well could be.

No discount for upgrading? Probably would get more moving from the free version if there was. I know I have upgraded a few of these when there was a carrot dangling in front of me, especially if the discount was time limited. Nothing gets people spending like being afraid of missing out on a deal. Scarcity works......

Also I received the 5-11 error as well on the portable version. However I just ignored it and restarted and it ended up working just fine (at least so far)

Reply   |   Comment by Richard  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+13)

Richard, regarding the discount. We will be happy to provide anyone interested with one. Although, we'd need to see how much it is going to be (based on the number of requests and couple of other factors). So, please free to contact our customer support about the matter, we will do our best to present you with an appealing offer.

I've been wanting to try this for a long time, but not without full Google integration, which this GotD is offering. Alas, getting a script error during Google API dialog and cannot connect to IMAP. I'm on Windows 10 and up to date. Have tried many other clients with no issues.

Anyone else?

Charles, this version 7.66 is from June 2018, and the connection with Google services (email and calendar) is not working for me neither.

Anyone who would like to try the most recent Pro version of EssentialPIM, please send an e-mail to our customer support (see how to do that on our web site, I believe we aren't able to leave any links here) mentioning this giveaway. We will be glad to offer you an additional trial period for up to 3 months (based on your case). Thanks!

Charles, to me Gmail works when setting outgoing smtp mail server security to STARTLS using port 587.
Incoming imap mail server is set as SSL/TLS on port 993
To synchronise btw. my iphone 6 and EPIM on XPsp3 I had to install the Bonjour for Windows printer driver (a subset of iTunes?)

Thse PIM applications seem quite useful and I am trying to get used to both Essential (from a previous giveaway) and Efficcess.
But they all seem to have some pretty basic shortcomings which you wuouldn't epect in a dedicated calendar management tool.
For example, the excruciating reminders functionalty. Judging by forums on the intenet, I am not alone in decrying the primitive reminder functioanlity. For example, you cannot disable reminder popups, in some you cannot even disable the sound. The only workaround seems to be to change the audio sound file to a short burst of "silence". Extremely frustrating when you are concentrating on something, image editing, writing, whatever, and a popup imposes tself, with or without dongs. Another thing, a popup appears, you have to "dismiss it" and in doing so, it maximises/focuses the main PIM window, which you then have to minimise or close. Another thing is that customisation of the interface is very limited, for example, I would like to be able to change the fill colour of different weeks in a moth / days in a year but this doesn't seem possible (not talking about the colour of an entry, just the background colour or shade). Another, ok enough of that, but there are few small things for the developers to imlement but important for the busy user.

Reply   |   Comment by benasp  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

benasp, all of the points you mentioned except one are available in EssentialPIM. You can set up reminders to always appear in the background, so you are able to see them on the task bar only. There's an option to disable sound completely for reminders. Also, reminders appear in a non-modal dialog window that acts on its own, separately from the main program's window. You can customize the calendar background color although it can't be done for individual weeks or months, yet.

The program was excellent to begin with and the developers keep adding various improvements and features. I picked up a free version years ago and thought enough of EssentialPIM to purchase a lifetime license. I have Outlook on my machine but I learned EssentialPIM (intuitive) and for 6+ years this has been my go to program for scheduling-contacts etc. Grab a free copy while you can. It might be the high point of your Valentines Day.

Michael in Oregon, You bought a lifetime licence, which means you have the most up to date version. This GOTD offering is of a version almost 2 yrs old and due to Google's code revamp for security. it does not function. I could not even get it to sync to emails properly.
So no, this is not the high point for Valentines Day.

Program works as it should (mainly) and has a nice clear outlay.

When entering the code I wasn't able to copy/paste immediately but I find if you paste it elsewhere (Address bar wil do) and then re-copy, it wil past into the registration box, successfully. This was so on two computers.

My difficulty is setting up IMAP settings so that I can view my eMails. My normal browser is Opera so anyone that can point me in that direction will get a gold star.

I found that the EMAIL HELP drop down is absolutely useless and needs looking at.

Reply   |   Comment by Terry I  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Terry I, usually an email provider offers instructions about how to set up an IMAP mail account in third party applications (you need to know incoming and outgoing mail server names and security protocols along with the port numbers). Please refer to it.

So I would assume that the Pro version also does.

Does not allow me to login to google to sync my calender, contacts etc. Google says this is an unsecure app and that the login is not possible. So there is no usage for this waste of bits and bytes then.

The first thing I get after choosing the English Language is the following message:

Can I assume for the comments that if I download this "newer" version that the registration I input from the .txt file will become invalid?

You might want to right click on the installation file and choose "Run as Administrator" to install the program. That should fix the error.
Also, there's the Portable edition that doesn't require installation.
