Tried it again.... same issue as last time "failed to open disk or partition". Does the same thing on three different machines: Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Home, and Windows 11. Waste of time......

Sorry there are so reports of problems recorded here I feel its too risky to take a chance trying it out, I'm sure it does work for some but it should work for all unless exclusions are stipulated.

I installed with no issue BUT still got the same error many others are getting Failed to open partition or disk". I went ahead and 'Activated' with no issue but cannot select a source.

This is a 'first' time installing this program, so cannot "remove the older version" as there never was one..

I tried uninstalling it, even with your DoYourClone uninstaller, but still have the same result..

Will wait for DoYourData programmer(s) to offer a resolution before removing it off my system.

When I tried to access my external USB drive, it failed after the installation... Thanks to gurutj suggestion in #17 to set a system restore point, I got access again...

The 'volume' driver was affected by this program's installation and totally wasted over an hour of my time...

Destructive programs like this should not be offered to users of GAOTD..

Took a look at Do Your Clone as an alternative to Macrium Reflect Free for USB sticks -- they added support for USB sticks in version 8, but the free version is still on v. 7. And it seems to work for me, though there's no option to save a disk image to use as a backup -- the only destinations provided are the other attached disks or drives.

Do Your Clone uses [I assume older, from 2018] files and drivers from EaseUS -- running the app without installing it, and so without the 2 drivers, EuDskCp.sys & EuEumDk.sys, meant getting the "Failed to open..." message others are reporting. Running setup added the 2 drivers and everything seems to work fine.

Besides adding the two drivers, everything else is contained in the program's folder, which comes in at just over 80MB, with I assume a little bit of bloat as not everything in the set of EaseUS files appears to be used, e.g. VssFreeze-XP.exe, since others have have commented that it won't work in XP. Those drivers have the biggest impact on the registry, though it did cause a rewrite of the Component hive, if you don't like all that registry churn -- stuff happens, and in this case with a recorded 300K+ new registry entries from rewriting that hive, there's a slight bit more chance for something to go wrong.

Because of the 2 drivers Do Your Clone won't run portably or from a bootable USB stick, e.g. one with WinPE, but in situations where you'd need a bootable USB stick, e.g. cloning a disk to a laptop hard disk, restoring a backup with Macrium Reflect has always worked fine.

Do note that when you're cloning one disk/partition to another and both hard disks or partitions are attached internally, you can run into unintended side effects. Windows assigns each partition a unique GUID, and you can't have the same one twice, which is what happens when you clone a disk/partition. As long as it doesn't contain Windows or the Windows boot partition the fix afterward is as easy bringing a disk/partition back online in Computer Management -> Disk Management, which causes Windows to issue a new GUID. If Windows &/or the boot partition is involved you *may* have to change the boot drive order in the BIOS &/or edit the BCD [boot files]. Some image backup software will *try* to fix things for you, but if you're doing something like moving your Windows install to another disk, you'll want to check to see which internal drive you're booting from, and which disk you're running Windows from. It's entirely possible to for example add an SSD, clone the Windows install from your old hard drive, and wind up still booting to and using the original installation rather than the new copy on the SSD.

my drive has tpm hardware in place on the motherboard, plus I have added a boot password to decrypt the drive. will this clone an encrypted drive?

Reply   |   Comment by ~walt  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

I *think* it would depend on the software used to encrypt the drive, and whether the drive was mounted, and so unencrypted when you cloned it.

I downloaded and installed this program (without disabling Windows Security) two months ago from another giveaway site and use it as a backup tool for my SSD system disk to an old hard disk via an USB 3.1 docking station every week. The program installed without any problem and can not be easier to use. I've tested the clone a few times and it's all OK. Cannot understand that so many people have problems at installation but despite that, I recommend DoYourClone as a keeper . On other computers, I also have Aomei, Easeus and AweClone. They all do the job perfectly, so the choice is dictated by giveaway opportunities...

I have the same problem. "Failed to open partition or disk" error message.
No old version to uninstall, it's not the firewall or antivirus or anything else stopping it from working.
    Uninstalled.

P.S. Make sure you set a system restore point before running this program if by some miracle it actually works for you.

Thanks any way to the GAOTD team.

    gurutj,
I installed this a few months ago and got a BSoD.
Thank goodness the restore point got me back on track, so good advice!

Aside from the BSoD, what was really upsetting was the total lack of support from DoYourData. They did not even reply to my request for assistance!

"I installed this a few months ago and got a BSoD."

Do Your Clone uses 2 EaseUS drivers from 2018. These might be incompatible with other drivers or software that loads with Windows, e.g. drivers & possibly a service loaded by newer or older EaseUS apps.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

    mike,
It would be nice if during the install these incompatible drivers were checked for and the install backed off, instead of leaving me with a BSoD to deal with.
But thanks for the reply. I assume you're with the vendor? If so, why is DOYOURCLONE using drivers from another vendor? Doesn't sound very ethical.

If you have installed old versions, don’t need to activate it again.
If you can’t activate it: turn off VPN, and try again.
If can’t load disk: Try to completely uninstall the old version, and then reinstall it. You also can check if the software is blocked by Windows defender.

No to both. It installs two drivers, and without those it threw the "failed to open..." error when I tried it.

Downloaded and installed fine, registration was easy. I too ran into the message "Failed to open partition or disk" at program startup. I then went into the program proper, clicked on selecting a source disk. It pops up a grayed out window. So I can't select a drive to clone. I tried selecting a destination drive and that was a no go either. I did get to test out successfully that my OS still allows me to uninstall programs properly.

"DoYourClone for Windows is one of the best disk cloning software" is stated yet doing a search for 'the best' never found this product listed. This is free, and I appreciate that, but the self grandiosing found in many of the giveaways should be less. Good products never need to say they are good and allow others to say it.

It would be a real risk to depend on this, based on comments so far.

I don't have any old version of the software; Windows defender did not block the software; all antivirus software was temporarily disabled; however, I got the error 'Failed to open partition or disk.' Thus, I did twice uninstall/ re-install the DoYourClone for Windows 2.6 that I download from GOTD with no success.

    Any solution at this point?

    Alexa,

I do not have any previous version installed. This is my first program from this publisher. I do not use a VPN. It seems like the publisher is grasping at straws in an effort to explain their program's failures. These "solutions" may work for 1% or 2% of users but the majority suffer the same troubles installing this.

Contrary to what is stated on GAOTD, the program does not work on XP (error message: "This program requires Windows NT version 5.1 Service Pack 4 or later"). I checked the developer's page, which confirms that it requires Vista and above.
Nice to see a program though which is delivered so simply here, with a straightforward direct download of the setup of only 22MB, no wrapper, and the serial number included.
