Ok. I seen where SwampThing says it just adds a button next to the view button. I am using WPS Office, and since there was no button on my spread sheet, I'm assuming that it doesn't work with WPS. Oh well. will uninstall it.

I have downloaded the program and installed it. Looks like it might be a program I would get some use out of it. But it would be a big help to find where the program is. I can't find it. Can anyone help? Thanks

I installed on Win 10 64 bit..
first installed Visual runtime,, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48217
Then ran msi file

then started excel 2007 (my version) ,,, it installed Dose

Get your license from the readme ..
Under Help hit register... put your email and the provided license.
Then stop and restart excel .. voila it now has a Dose ribbon tab.

Just to mention that I did get prior GOTD to work once the Certificate part handled right. Haven't
bothered with this d/l same version. Windows 10 x64 Pro, Excel 2016. Prior d/l one needed to close Excel and reopen a file to first see the DOSE tab post install. Not sure if that's needed here.
As a casual Excel user I do like having the DOSE tab sitting there knowing its variety of options can help should I need them. Hope those w/ issues get it going. The cert thing seemed to be biggest
problem last go round.

This program requires: Visual Studio Tools for Office 2010 Runtime.
That should have been included in the .ZIP file!!

I was excited to read that it included automatic backup options for files (since I already know the shortcuts to do all the formatting stuff I need). However, I was quite disappointed with the VERY limited options for backup. You don't even get to choose the folder location that it backs up to, or the specific files that should backup or not. Also, it doesn't have an option to automatically backup on close of file (when I would like it to happen). So it is pretty useless to me. Might be good for someone who needs the formatting and sorting help.

What I would like to see for backup would be the option to select location (like another drive to prevent data loss on drive failure), option to select if it saves over the existing backup file or create a new backup and how many backups to keep before deleting oldest ones, option to choose backup on open of file or on close of file or both, and especially backup only of selected files that you can add to a list (I don't need every file backed up).

I already know this can be done with a "backup" program, but having something internal to Excel sounded nice.

How much does it add to the Excel boot-up time?

Thanks,

Dear bromberg,

To uninstall the Add-In you need to go to control panel -> Programs and Features -> Dose for Excel -> Uninstall.
Regarding how much it adds up to Excel, it depends on the needs and requirements of users. Try it and hope it will comply your needs.

I added it. No problems! I guess I'm smart.

It adds a "Dose" button at the top of any spreadsheet right beside the "View" button. I'm not really into Excel; I make one or two spreadsheets a year. So, I can't say for certain if the actions it allows are worthwhile or not. I see a "Merge cells values" button that might prove useful. Lots of choices for cell color. Button to take the sheet to full screen. "Change case" and "Date picker" buttons are okay.

I'll keep it and vote it up. Why not?

I too received the Windows 10 warning, but that is simply because it doesn't recognize the publisher. So, I proceeded and it installed just fine. The features are quite useful and this is a cool little add on for Excel. Nice work to the developer and Thanks to GOTD for the opportunity to look at the tools.

It still safe 100% to install and tested from our side and from GOTD and it is clean from virus.

The good news is that, after *multiple* failed attempts by the developers to create an installation package that actually works, they finally did it. At least for me.

The bad news is that when I finally *did* get this installed, I was underwhelmed at what it does. I work with spreadsheets all day long and there was very little here that can help me at all and almost nothing that you can't find a script for on the net.

I can't imagine who this might help but it definitely did not help me.

As I heavy user of Excel, I was interested to see what features this would include. There are certainly some useful ones here.

One thing to note, however, is the anything done using Dose cannot be undone. As far as I can tell, the creators have not implemented undo functions. Since some of those functions don't necessarily work the way you'd expect (I'm not saying they do things wrongly, but a few of the results surprised me), you need to be very sure about anything you do with Dose which actually modifies existing content.

The fact that these actions cannot be undone means you also lose the ability to undo anything done before using the Dose functions.

It's been a while since I had a licence for it, but I preferred J-Walks "Power Utility Pak"

Please download and install it from the below link and try to install the Dose for Excel Add-In again:

Fixing the issues doesn't change anything regarding the usefulness of this GOTD (see previous reviews). IMHO, for what it does, this GOTD is targeted to the lazy.

Reply   |   Comment by papin  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-15)

papin, or perhaps the busy?

Reply   |   Comment by Samson  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Samson,

If busy, an Excel user do not have time to waste doing string manipulations. Believe me on that.

If you rely on an macro you can't tell what it does exactly, and you cannot modify because it's closed source, you'll end up with a screwed sheet, or not getting things done. This is laziness, at best.

The best example of laziness is the macro for getting the list of worksheets. I googled "excel list all sheet names". The first link has a non-VBA solution (look for " Ashish Mathur June 6, 2013 at 9:34 am"). It's a .XLSM file (safe to open) but it works in Excel 2003. For a VBA solution, press the F1 key in Excel: 3 lines shows how to do it. Use debug.print to display result in macro editor.

Other example: the macro to merge cells. It is much more efficient to add column(s: if formula gets very complex/complicated, add as many columns as needed) to hold the formula(s). When satisfied, either copy/paste the result as a value to the original column or hide the columns you created (good for future use). How difficult is that?

For basic stuff like this GOTD, you'd be better off creating the macro yourself. Advantages:
* learning (including proud, for Excel newbies; in no time, they will fill PERSONAL.XLS with their own custom functions and created their own .XLA add-in)
* source code is yours to modify at any time to your liking/needs (see comment by taf above)
