Yo, guys and girls, it's called AVIToolbox for a reason, of course it only supports AVI files as input, hence the name. :D

It looks like it only fully supports MPEG-4 Visual -- XviD, where also the preview window works.

Other videos found on my HDD i tried (MPEG-4 Visual -- FMP4 and AVC -- H264) only worked partially, since the preview window remained empty, you don't really know what you are looking at, so editing is pointless.

AVI can actually have a lot of file formats and codecs but AVIToolbox seems to be pretty limited in that regard.

If there is only one input format, at least make it so that it supports a wide range of file formats and codecs or ditch the idea of supporting AVI only and expand on it allowing for other input formats than AVI.

The bug tracker they have on their homepage only deals with bugs, not much has changed in regards to codecs and it probably won't in the near future.

With VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod and FFMpeg Input Plugin you can throw much more at it than AVIToolbox will ever be able to handle and all that for completely free.

So there is no need to limit yourself like this, with so much (free) competition.

Totally useless program as it is outdated. AVI to me is dead.
It's time to "KILL" reCAPTCHA as well.

Does anyone still use AVI video format?

Kellie, Not me, with AVI I stopped years ago, AVI is something from the last century. Photo cameras from Medion still use AVI.
Audio, Video, Interleave.

Back then when we were using virtualdub to digitize out tape camcorder recordings...this program can't even do that, and only works with avi formats, useless. Virtualdub 2 is free and works with almost any format.

1) Downloaded via email link from GOTD
2) Unzipped and installed. Used login and password from readme file to activate.
3) Unfortunately, software is limited to working with AVI files exclusively.
4) Uninstalled via reboot

It does NOT support mainstream formats like MP4 , MKV , FLV , MOV etc , it does only supports AVI .
There are already many free alternatives which works great with many formats including the AVI Format
Check Gihosoft Free Video Cutter it does support AVI plus MP4 , MKV , Mpeg , FLV , Mov , Mpg , ASF and many more
Also FreeVideoCutter supports many forms including mp3 outputs.
Mediacope is another Free alternative as well .

Installed on windows 10 but not able to get past a series of errors when trying to load files (the fist operation)
These are avi files that run instantly in a number of players on my PC.
First it said error in file (can't remember words)
Tried another file - Program unresponsive so closed it
re-open try the second file again - It is in portrait format but appeared stretched out of proportion in a landscape window. So unuseable.
Tried the first file again - error check video codecs and program unresposive again - but my pc can run this file easily so not going looking for other codecs thanks.
Will close with file manager and uninstall. Most annoying thing for me is wasting time and thinking I promoted rubbish on Facebook so I could get the download. but I suppose the developer needs us to test it.
Be interesting to hear if anyone else gets it to work.

D Murphy, Just to add that in uninstall the program starts with the name KC and not AVI as one might expect.

This only works with avi format video?
That puts a limit to its usefulness.

Ronjon, The current flat screens can not play AVI. 7 year old flat screens also not. AVI is old-fashioned.
MP4 and MKV are the current standards, HEVC as well.

Ivanovich, you are correct in that AVI is dated. But you missed the point that people who have older family videos taken on older devices need application like this to edit them, then convert to newer formats and transfer into newer media. Usefulness and beauty are in the eye of the beholder.

Franz H., I have done a trial with a film from a videotape to an MP4 and that in the best quality. The result was sad, so to speak, poor-tempered. That's why I brought more than 400 videotapes to the container park. End Video tapes and devices.
