I would like to be able to watch a YouTube video or two that introduced the features of Inspire and showed how best to carry out its various main functions. (Other writer apps are there in YouTube, why not Inspire?)

- - - - - - - - - - -
By the way, I just checked out its publising to my (self-hosted) WordPress blog, and it worked effortlessly. Very good. Perhaps add publising to Google Blogger too?

Hi Tony Austin,

Here is a video about Inspire: http://video.findmysoft.com/2018/12/11/Inspire.mp4. Hope it helps.

A video introduction or instruction of Inspire is also part of our plan of updating our website. Feel free to follow our Facebook page for more future updates. :-)

I have easily and successfully installed, no time now to really test it, BUT
1. It told me this is a ten day trial, not a one year trial. I hope this is a mistake.
2. It has blotted out my task bar and most of my system tray and I cannot get them back
3. I comes up far wider than my screen and I have to keep moving the window from side to side. If this is not a distraction, I find all sorts of distractions on the screen starting with a large picture that is apparently totally irrelevant.
Sorry, I'll try it tomorrow but not much hope.
Incidentally as someone asks, what happens after a year? Just no more updates and support? Or that it all stops working and all products from its use are lost?
In fairness, I do appreciate that Sophie takes the trouble to reply, and her English is far better than that of a number of regular commenters

Zen ,

Sorry for the late reply. And thanks so much for your questions. I'll try to answer some of them here, but we might need more information from you to answer the other questions.

1) The readme.txt file provided by GOTD has the registration information in it. So you can copy and paste the information to Inspire to get it activated.

2) & 3) Sorry about what happened. We'd love to take a look at these problems and see what we can do to help. If it's not too much to ask, would you please send us an email so we can provide more assistance? We don't have your personal info, so we won't be able to reach out from our end. Sorry about that.

Regarding what would happen in a year, we could only say that you won't be able to use Inspire for writing when the key expires, and you can export your files and save them locally before the key runs out.

But this could be just a temporary suggestion, because we're still working on how far you can go with the expired key. We're just a small team, and we're still exploring new ways and opportunities to meet the need of the majority.

Again, thanks for your comment. Looking forward to your email. :-)

Sophie, Thank you. Today is different. I can retrieve the taskbar and system tray by clicking on them. The width of the window is cured by going into full screen, not by the button that tells you to (or you see almost nothing) but by clicking the thing on the top right corner of the page next to the X for exiting.
My comments were a first reaction, I have told you the solutions which may help if anyone else comes with the same problems. The problems do exist but are easily solved each time.
I cannot find where to change the font, either typeface or size. Otherwise it looks quite nice.

Instead of Facebook I asked to be sent by email the link to download but I haven't receive it yet. I downloaded a trial from their website for now. I am impressed that you can create footnotes, something I haven't seen in OneNote or Evernote. Does anybody knows other apps that have this feature?

Installation was fast and efficient which made it very easy to try out. I agree it has a "Distraction-free writing mode" but the word "mode" left me searching for its other modes. Apart from the introduction I could find no other guidance. I would really like to have seen a searchable help index so I could have determined if I could change the font and looked for other stuff I like to do. Maybe there is one but I can't find it. In the end I decided that without a good help the learning curve was too steep or it was too basic. So if I use it at all then I would be likely to export any file I created to do further editing.

My best hit at "best improvement idea" is have a look at the MSword help index and use that as a guide to create an inspire help index so people can know how to use all its features and if it has a more feature rich mode.

I generally enjoy the minimalistic UI, as well as the simple filing structure. I intend to use the program for a while and see if it'll be able to replace LibreOffice as my creative writing tool.

That said, reading through the introduction, I came to the sheet on Export.

"You can export your Inspire sheet to whatever format you want, PDF, DOCX, HTML, MD, TXT, you name it." As far as I can tell, that is the exhaustive list of formats Inspire can export to? I saw someone else suggest Open Document, and I sincerely second that. Please add that. Speaking from a completely subjective point of view; for me to continue using the program for my writing, it needs to be able to export to Open Document.

Thank you for a very interesting Give Away :)

Dae Powell, yeah, I know. But as far as they've come, they still mess up the formatting now and again.

It's better with a dedicated export.

Reply   |   Comment by Breagha  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Dae Powell, I'm struggling with this concept because I can't get me head round why would anyone compose using one program then export to another when you can do the whole thing in Open Office to start with?

Reply   |   Comment by D Murphy  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

D Murphy, because of the minimalistic UI. For just creative writing, all the bells and whistles of an office suite text editor are nothing but wasted screen space at best and a distraction at worst.

This offer today is attractive precisely because it isn't an office suite text editor.

I use LibreOffice for when I need to pretty a text. I prefer something less intrusive when I actually get the text down.

Reply   |   Comment by Breagha  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Breagha,

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll make it a new feature as quickly as we possibly can.

Reply   |   Comment by Sophie  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

TK, you're right, and I mostly use the hot keys, so my toolbars are less filled than an out-of-the-box installation.

However, Inspire is distraction free from installation, has an insignificant learning curve, and a focus on writing rather than the visual looks of the writing.

I'm not trading in LibreOffice for Inspire, but Inspire is excellent for concentrating on just getting the words down. The highlighting is bugging me, though, but so far that's the only fly in the ointment :P

Sophie,

I read all the comments and even went through your site, but I don't understand what Inspire is. You list feature, but not benefits. Who would want to use it and why? Is it primarily for writing books or for general office use? Is it a replacement for Word? Something more? Something less?

Clarify please.

stan,

Thanks for pointing that out, and we're sorry that we didn't get it right in the first place.

In short, Inspire is a light markdown writing app for your writing of any kind. It creates a distraction-free environment for you to fully immerse in your work. If you happen to know a thing or two about markdown language, you'd find Inspire worthy of a try. If you don't, that wouldn't be a big deal, because you can use Inspire just like how you would use any other writing apps.

We'll get started on the update of the copy writing for Inspire. Thanks again for your comment.

stan,

Thanks for your improvement idea. And we're glad to tell you that you win a life-time license for it. Congrats!

Feel free to send us a reminder email so we can send you the key at your earliest convenience. :-)

Sophie,

That's nice. Thank you. I received a no reply email from you, so I reply here.

As to your reply to my comment, although I write extensively, I don't "know a thing or two about markup language." Maybe I should.

Remember the radio station WIIFM - what's in it for me. :)

Tell the world the benefits - the ADVANTAGES of using markup... and Inspire.

I look forward to knowing WHY I should use markup... and Inspire. And then maybe the lifetime license will be useful.

Cheers!

stan, you bear some responsibility in your own learning. Have you looked up anything at all, especially the differences between markdown and markup, or do you expect every software developer to walk you through completely? From my understanding, this offering wasn't about educating us on what markdown is, but rather, providing us (those of us for whom this may be useful) a tool that uses markdown. Besides, at least part of your request was addressed in the description. Your comment, like numerous others for this offering, seems like complaint bait.

all queries of their customers timely, they takes their opinions and promisses

the thing we have been missing to others companies giving their offer to this website.

Inspire would be more useful for me if
(1) It can format tables in Markdown,
(2) I can explore the whole group instead of just a sheet, and
(3) I can use it to edit any files in markdown formats without importing into the system.

Right now, a better alternative is iA-writer, which can do all the above.

Having played around with Inspire for a bit, here are some pros & cons.

Pros: It's a standalone program and can be used (presumably) offline. It offers backup to cloud storage. The interface is clean and friendly with a few options for customization. Organization of documents (sheets) is efficient. It has expected features such as auto(instant)-save, standard markdown, keyboard support and exporting to various formats.

Cons: As with many markdown editors, it has syntax highlighting without the option to turn this off, so the typical claim of "distraction-free" editing is never truly distraction-free, and this is not how all (many?) users write (and is why I continue to prefer Paper over the many MD editors I've tried -- both web-based and standalone). Those who want syntax highlighting and instant preview mode on may prefer StackEdit. It's also missing a few features I've come to enjoy in Paper like (functional) checkbox lists, converting lists from ordered to checkbox, date insertion, easy no-click navigation (I'm aware of the navigation on-screen, but it's a click away, plus offers no indenting of the headers).

For those who love to write in markdown and appreciate seeing the syntax highlighting as they type (as opposed to the markup result, preview style), Inspire seems to be a player in the field of MD editors (a field which may be a bit saturated right now, and not offering the true user-friendliness and customization users want, IMO). I wouldn't worry too much if this is just a 1-year offer, as there are new editors that, like buses, show up every twenty minutes. Evaluate at the end of a year to see if the $30 price is a good deal.

I tried the program and then uninstalled. I did not inspire me at all. The interface is dull, I dont know what to import or what file types does it import?; definitely not better than microsoft or atlantis softwares. 32 bit version on my 64 bit computer. font types? photo formatting? perhaps a powerpoint feel would be better with tools to inspire what i am looking at. colors? templates? Try again.

When the one year license expires you can 'reach out' to them and they will give you a discount off of the 49.99$ PRICE? Are you kidding me? Users must "reach out" to renew a subscription? At an undetermined and unlisted discount? I must say, that is truly the worst user policy that I have ever seen.

Reply   |   Comment by PhotoGuy  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+41)

PhotoGuy,

Sorry that I didn't make myself clear enough in one of the replies.

It's not that you "must 'reach out' to renew". The discount we offer for the renewal is simply a nice gesture we make for users from Giveaway of The Day.

And we value GOTDers so much that we just need to do something in return. Thus with the discount offer. Hope you could understand.

You can of course choose to pay the full price for our software when it expires if it works out better for you.

Feel free to let me know if there is more that you need to know.

Best,
Sophie

"Markup-based text editor with syntax highlighting" - what does that mean? If I write
Sometext1 ^bsometext2^b sometext2.
What will I see on screen:
- the ^b or [b] or something
and/or
- the whole line boldened
- or just sometext2 boldenend (as I would in rtf)
or, since "syntax highlighting":
- the whole line not boldenend but in another color
- sometext2 not boldenend but in another color

Thank you.

Sophie, I use a lot of similar software and I did not at all expect to like this one as much as I have just in the past couple of hours. What stands out to me compared to the competition is how cleanly this one handles footnotes (including the export process). I am quite torn though because, without a keyboard shortcut for footnotes, it is practically not worth the time honestly. If it has ctrl+alt+f (to use MS.Word's hotkey) for footnotes, it could be my daily driver.

Sophie, When you say the license lasts for a year. For me the word license has two possible meanings could you clarify.
Is it
1. Todays download goes on working forever but you can't update after a year. As per most GAOTD offerings
or
2. The program will stop working after a year so it will have to be bought or uninstalled in a years time. And if uninstalled any documents left in inspire format will be inaccessible at that point.

Sophie, I would like to offer an idea that other users may not have thought about and I don't think is available from you at this time. Personally, I would enjoy the option to add templates or other add-ons to format your writing in specific ways. Ex: Movie screenplays, stage plays incl. musicals, novels and other long form writing, etc. This is something that is either missing or sorely lacking in other word processors that are free, OS, or "clean [and] simple". Thanks for your attention.

Reply   |   Comment by BradS  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

D Murphy,
I could only say that at the time being, the latter description is more accurate.

But we keep developing Inspire at a fast pace, just as you can see in our update history. We can't say for sure if the same pattern will stick in a year's time. We need more time to work out the best way for our users.

But we can say one thing for sure: you can buy the life-time version of Inspire at a discount when the key expires in a year.

This subtle distinction is important, and from today onwards you really must always include a statement describing which of these two possibilities applies, for each and every giveaway that offers a time-limited license.

Mostl software vendors use possibility #1 and you can still keep using the app but with no updates after the time period expires, but a small proportion of vendors do stop their app from working once the license expires.

BradS,
Thanks for your suggestions. We'll see what we can do from there. :-)
