Nice, I also run OpenOffice, AbiWord and some other. They have different function. The only problem is, I can not change spell language! I'm is Swedish and have to export and spellcheck in other program.

Thank you! It's perfect for creating instruction and procedure manuals I've been working on, and looks good for journaling too. Light-weight, simple interface, love the notebook concept. I have Wordperfect, Word, and Open Office on various PCs, but the tabs and organization tree in Page Four are handier to use.

Hi PromptJock,

I don't like OpenOffice because I prefer Ms Office to it.

And as said in my post, I already have Serif PagePlus which can publish to PDF.

I like it. I don't think of it primarily as a word processor -- I think of it as a file organizer with instant access to "any" Rich Text File file and with built-in Wordpad-like editing capability and a lot of handy built-in capabilities, like auto-save. It's a great replacement to Notepad and Wordpad, since you can very easily access and switch between files (which PageFour calls "Pages") without bringing up multiple windows. You can easily import existing txt/rtf/doc files, or if you're a bit of a techie, you can move your RTF files directly into the applicable "Documents and Settings\...\Application Data\IMBT\PageFour\Data\" path.

Increase: if you want "direct to PDF" capability, look at the "Writer" module of the OpenOffice.org (OOo) package.

For everyone else looking to get out from under the Microsoft Office "umbrells", look also to OOo - it'll read/write most Word documents, Excel Spreadsheets, and Power Point presentations up to MSO 2003.

Something I really don't understand about the complaints I see here.

These programs are offered free to try out, and people complain that they are disappointed by the daily download.

Well what EXACTLY do they expect to find, some program that does the dishes, cleans the house and raises the family for them? Good lord people, it's software. Ever look at the software at the store? There's not a whole lot of greatness jumping off the shelves there either.

The whole point of this site is to offer programs for you people to try. You don't like what they offer, go somewhere else.

But for petes sake, quit complaining about it because nobody needs your negativity.

Great program, especially for me as a novel writer. Not a full fledged writing environment as Scrivener on the Mac, but a useful writing companion. I give it 8/10 points.

Not only do I really like this software for its simplicity, concept and ease of use, but the website also has a number of free downloadable dictionaries for those of us who write in other languages. They took a couple of seconds to download and install. Thank you GAOTD and Darren for a really cool product.

Stephanie (#97) Thank you. Someday I'll learn to read the help files. Right now, I'm deep into a writing project and don't have the time to really explore Page Four. With header and page numbering options available, according to the help file, I might try my next story or novel on it. It has to be an improvement over the bloated Word 2002 with all the bells and whistles I'll never use.

Thanks so much for the "free" software. I also appreciate the rapid response from the help team if you have a problem. I found that if you use the unzip "Wizard", for some reason the readme file and the activaction key are not included in the Install. However, if you use the "Classic" unzip and install, the registration works beautifully.

I would think if more people read the directions or asked for help, they would find the applications to be up to par.

Thanks!

Well, first off, I would like to congratulate GOTD for an awesome program today.

It's a really nice program, fast and easy.
It's simple, yet efficient.

It's the best one so far, to me, out of all the ones I have downloaded thus far.

@ those who complain : about this being only the "FREE" version, do you care to take 3 minutes out of your time and read some of the comments before you post?

That would truly help.
JUST a suggestion.

I don't understand how these people expect to sell it for money. I certainly would not pay for it. The only advantage it has it the the smart edit feature which is only ok, not great. What else do they have to offer an academic writer? Nothing. No auto-reference building. No brain storming tool. I am disappointed.

At first I wrote this off after reading the description but then I looked at the way it's designed and thought this would be a very handy tool to act like a diary of activities. I don't need it for a blog or anything but as a personal reference builder. I also write some newsletters and this would be a handy tool to review them with rather than hunting and opening with overblown MS Word. I'm going to give it a try. Thanks GOTD and IMBT.

Well, I normally use Wordperfect, and have for years, but I like the format of this word processor, it looks like it might shake my thinking up a bit, and maybe I'll be more creative with it. I appreciate the dissimilarities to the word processors I've grown accustomed to.

The several people out of the majority bashing PageFour are doing so because they are simply not paying attention.

I have MS Word and I am also a published writer and aspiring novelist. Again, I have Word, there is nothing wrong with Word, BUT IT IS NOT GEARED FOR WRITERS the way PageFour is. That is why I have the software.

I tried the other free versions of writer specific word processors but they were nowhere as intuitive or nicely presented as I have found with PageFour. (Word and OpenOffice are NOT creative writer specific.)

Writers want to sit down and write when the muse strikes (or when the editor demands), that is what is so good about PageFour. If you are trying to compare this to Word or OpenOffice, you are completely missing the point of why this app was written and who is the intended user - people who make their living (or aspire to) with words.

You sit down, open it up and can get to work on your next great writing project. Your ideas can be outlined, changed, moved, etc. with a minimum of fuss. You can have any number of Notebooks, subnotebooks, pages, chapters, all grouped and arranged in a way that works best for you VISUALLY.

All of this simplicity lets you concentrate on what is the most important thing, getting compeling words down on "paper" and nothing is included in this app that would get in the way of that.

Darren deserves a hardy pat on the back from the writing community for a very elagant application that adresses just about all the needs of creative writers.

Get his wonderful piece of software even if you have to pay for it. If you are a serious writer or serious about being a writer, PageFour is the best out there.

This time I thoroughly tested out the program, and I thought it was fantastic. I liked being able to split my ideas into notebooks, and then into pages.

The extra features are awesome too:
-The spellcheck, of course, works fine
-The Thesaurus is really helpful
-The scan page features helps, especially when I have to do a project that requires using a certain word to a limit

There's a lot I could say good about this, but you would have to try it out yourself to find out.

@ those that complain: Do you feel ripped off by these free programs or something?

First of all, this is a product I will definately use.
I have a legitimate copy of MSword but this is much more tailored to my creative and personal projects.

Big plus: Password protection! This is what I have been looking for to use with my personal journal. Nothing complicated like encryption or a separate program just a simple built in password to protect text files. I love it! pagefour also doesn't eat up my cpu power like word does-it starts up so quick I blink and it's there. I have been experimenting with the program for over 2 hours with imported files and while the pros are too numerous to list, the cons are virtually to minor to count.

A hint to the programmers for future versions: in the right-click menu, please add a link to your thesaurus. It's an awesome thesaurus-- much more extensive than word's and having to highlight and run to the top menu to use it makes its operation more clumbersome than need be.

Also, (as a writer who appreciates the value in a name) 'pagefour' isn't a very descriptive or appropriate appellation for what this great program does. It sounds superficial, I agree--however I almost passed this program up without reading the description just because the name lacked the signifigance to catch my attention.

This thing is really nice. It stores it's data in a series of RTF files which are universal. And it's quite customizable when printing.

Is there any way to show the number of pages for a given chapter? That's the only downside I can find so far. It shows the number of documents you have set up under a notebook, but doesn't seem to know the number of pages for each document.

If you ever have to do a restore, format or whatever...and by so doing loose the ability to use this program and don't like using the big wordprocessors you might want to check out :

http://www.abisource.com/download/

or the free novel writing software that is actually made by a published author :

http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter_Download.html

both are of course opensource / freeware alternatives to todays offering.

This is a specific piece of software targeted to a specific audience; namely, writers. It isn't important what is being written, however, it seems as though it will be very useful for me when writing a class. The panes on the left give the writer more freedom if they occasionally lose their train of thought, working as an outline.

If people could think a little more openly about they might begin to see the usefulness of the product. I could see a very practical application in just about any kind of speech scenario: birthday, anniversary, promotion, retirement or even in the preparation of an eulogy. Maybe your church wants to write a cookbook in narrative form. Or prepare a calendar and find the perfect quotes to match the pictures and months.

There are truly a lot of practical applications for this program.

Chuck (#84): I will still be exporting out to Word for the final product, for final submission to editors. However, there *is* a header function; you set it up when it's time to print. If you've installed it, search the help for 'header', and it will show you how to add one to the printing. It's sort of old school, like when I started using Wordperfect in the early 90s, and won't give the fine tuning of Word's headers and footers (then again, sometimes I can also spend 20 minutes fiddling with the things, and I know what I'm doing), but that's what you want.
