You silly people who cry spam should also
stop using any type of browser, they can
be used for bad practices also.

And for the rest, "Don't hassle the Thoth"

He owes you nothing. If you read his reviews,
you owe him the gratitude of taking the time
to do something you won't.

For the others who act decent on GoTD, I say
Thank You.

Hey BLADEDTHOTH.
Ignore the ****.
The rest of us respect and APPRECIATE whatever reviews you do or do not choose to do.
I've been down your road. I "used" to make freeware high quality mods for the gaming community but after such comments like the above I said what the hell stopped doing it. I was spending more time helping clueless jerks like the one above than I was doing my own thing or spending time with my family.
Do what YOU want to do and block out the idiots. I know it's hard but do know that more of us respect and appreciate your free wisdom than those who can't appreciate a gift-horse.

Dowloaded this...
Very basic, but does the trick. It will create the neccessary html and other files for your website [for unsubscribe]. I did however find that their proprietary database sucks. You can add or delete addresses, but in no way can ever see the complete list. I didnt try the import functions, because i am not ready for that yet...
Cool giveaway-> NOW how about one of those crawlers that will gather email addresses from any website? hehe

Whats is this [only send 30 a day thing?] is this real?

This software provides an unsubscibe link in the email as per [the law].

People complaining about spammings SHOULD GET A SECOND EMAIL ADDRESS JUST TO USE FOR CREATING ONLINE ACCOUNTS AT TEMP WEB SITES

I have read today's comments with interest - and many of them with some bewilderment! Among those who were genuinely commenting on this software, a number of others seem to have lost the plot today.

Spam is spam is spam ... of course. But that has nothing specifically to do with e-newsletter or e-marketing software such as the one on offer today. (And, though I'm not a techie so am not familiar with the background processes, I suspect spammers use other methods than software such as this anyway.)

As someone in small business, I didn't download today's offer so can't report on it. As and when we move from manual management of our list of 1,000+ newsletter readers, we're anticipating we'll want a service that will track opens and click throughs, which K-ML does not.

So to those who have so quickly jumped on the "Oh no, this is spam software" bandwagon ... There are many, many people both in business and in various nonprofit or community arenas, who use newsletter or mailing list management software for completely legitimate purposes - complying with all anti-spam regulations, including double-opt in and unsubscribe options etc.

There are also many different types of mailing list management systems available - both online services and stand-alone software, some which track opens and click-throughs and some that do not. For example, for a colleague I recently reviewed the features and costs of:
Constant Contact
Email Brain
Hilltop Mail
IntelliContact
Reasonable Spread
ContactPro
EzEzine
Emma Mail
Jango Mail
Your Mailing List Provider
Mail Chimp
Vertical Response
High Impact Email Pro
Interspire SendStudio
G-Lock EasyMail
Dada Mail

(I've no affiliation with any of them - just found them on the web and looked at their variety of features and cost options.)

For nonprofit clubs or community organisations, K-ML may well be worth a look - although there are other no-cost or low-cost options (eg some commercial services offer a free or very low cost version for non-profits) that may be easier to use or have more features. I'd anticipate it'd be worth checking out others as well before making a decision.

As I am sure is the case for others here, I would love to see the 'non-commercial' use waived for some of the software offered that is clearly for business purposes. However I still have found GAOTD a great source of software I wouldn't otherwise know about, and a means of testing it before deciding whether it would be worth expending some of our limited small business budget on it. :-)

Normally, when not downloading and testing a GOATD offer myself, I would not add a comment - I think this space should really be conserved for genuine reviews of the software on offer.

But today is an exception, because I was rather stunned by the lack of awareness of many posters of the very genuine and non-spamming uses of mailing list software.

I was also rather appalled by the negative comments about BladedThoth's reviews!

I'd like to say that I (and I know many others here) very much appreciate the time and trouble BladedThoth takes to review each day's offering - purely on a voluntary basis, what's more! It's ironic that some people, after receiving the benefits of a voluntary or generous service over time, start to perceive it as a right, not a privilege.

To those of you complaining, please appreciate the effort that is taken to write the reviews - whether you agree with his take on a particular offering or not. And assume, when there is no review, that there's a very good reason why BladedThoth wasn't able to post his VOLUNTARY offering on that particular day!

Cheers
Sue

When supermarkets sells knives that can be used into various tasks, such as cooking, surviving, fishing, etc. But ALSO someone can backstab people with it - it's like usual mailer client.
Instead, this soft designed directly for sending bunch of identical mail through the list. More like to if supermarket gives an UZI.

double opt-in = spammerspeak, designed to obfuscate what the process is, to make it sound extra difficult and not worth the effort. Proper term is 'confirmed opt-in'

I just downloaded it (I'm on low-speed. 56k dial up, so 1MB takes a few minutes.) and I've looked over the UI. it looks usable to anyone that would take the time to figure out where everything is - But that's what software is. You find better things(or new), and if you like them enough, or are interested, you find ways to adapt. I like this piece of software - particularly because it's not all eye candy, like most email programs, such as Outlook Express which comes with Windows.

Other comments:

I didn't read the attack on BladedToth until he mentioned it.. but that really was uncalled for. Besides - Speak for yourself, not for others- He's got my respect, because he tries to do what he can when he can. If he's got no internet access, how do you expect him to post? That's beside the point anyhow. When you make a blog, and post a decent review every day, then you can talk smack about BladedToth.

His services are free, if you hadn't noticed. On the other hand, you shouldn't rely on a review - no matter whose. Try the software for yourself - You aren't going to get a virus, or spyware from GaotD.. You'll notice the activation program connect to a server for activation.. but that's to be expected, and it isn't open long enough for something malicious to download.

Thanks GOTD (What exactly is your name acronym? I've heard GOTD, GaotD, and GGAOTD-for Games-, it'd just be nice to know.)

BladedToth, keep up the good work man. Don't let these people put you down.

Actually this program might be great for a low budget political campaign. Just as long as it will allow a large data base. Good for informing voters on events, news releases and similar applications. I see no other non-commercial application.

Okay by my standards for this purpose.

I would find this software extremely useful to send emails to the other parents in the band my children are in. However, the software will not install on my computer. Everytime it gets near the end of installation, it tells me one of the files is in use by another program and the only thing I can do is abort the installation since retrying does not help.

If anyone has a solution, please let me know. I could really use this software. Thank you GAOTD for offering the software!!!

The problem is the license not the software as the software usage has always been down to the integrity of the user, the point is this is business software that can be used by spammers and useless to the average joe like myself along with the restrictive and confusing licensing..
As for the attack on BladedThoth that was uncalled for, i like some of his reviews and i don't agree with all but he does make the effort, puts in the time and deserves respect for his knowledge, and like any review at the end of the day you can take it or leave it...

What a bunch of freekin cry babies. WAHHH......its not what I want.....WAHHHH. A real spammer would not bother with this program. This is for small business people who do email marketing or news letters. Real email marketers are legit business people not spammers. Spammers are from some place untouchable like China or Russia and they WILL NOT ever offer you a valid unsubscribe link. I run a small ISP business and I will give this a try for billing reminders and late payment reminders. If it works out good I have no problem buying the full licensed version. The cost is small potatoes for a real business.

#66, The term "Open source" has nothing to do with the interface.. it just means the source code is available for download - For developers, programmers, or people that wish to help the software in question. Usually open source software is free of charge (I've never seen one that isn't, but who am I to say it doesn't exist?)

#86, Before you review, do everyone, including yourself, a favor and learn Grammar and spelling. No offense- but when you don't spell correctly, or you have run-on sentences, you're doing the reader no good. Personally, I skip most people's comments that have bad formatting. (I could understand if maybe your first language isn't English.. but those who rape the English language while it being their first language just burns me.)

Now onto the comment of the actual software:

Sure, it has legitimate uses. Most people that posted today aren't thinking that there ARE websites, and other things dedicated to helping others. Such as linux distributions - They're (for the most part) free. Non-commercial. Though this software wouldn't be of use to them because it's not compatible with Linux (Maybe it runs in WINE?).. There are non-commercial organizations that would find this software useful.

Stop bashing it until you've thought out your response. a simple "OMGZ SPAM" is spam. It tells us nothing, except that you're ignorant, that you can't think of a good response, and that you shouldn't be near a keyboard.

I have no use for this right now, but I may in the near future. I plan to start a website soon with a mailing list.. So, I'll download it and install it.. hopefully my partition doesn't go wacky and corrupt again, and I'll be able to keep this software.

Good job GOTD - Thanks for staying in business all this time. You catch more shit than a porter-john, and from uneducated people, at that.

As for the rest of you, that are helping this website by giving reviews and thinking out your comments, thank you. I read comments before I download - So those spammers uptop (If I was unreasonably stupid) may have kept me from downloading.

About K-ML software
it is a simple but usefull e-mail programm. You can make your own e-mails in HTML+ plain text or plain text. The HTML for e-mails must be very basic, because of the many HTML-rendering methods of several e-mail programms. And this one looks good.
You only can use the name and the e-mail adres of the sender to personalize the e-mail. This could be better to add some more free variables (for example: company name, town, etc)
K-ML is not very usefull for commercial use, because there is no option to see which person has opened the mail and which links in the mail were clicked through. I that case you need php-scripted e-mail-software (I normally use).
Very usefull is the option to create subscription forms for new e-mail subscribers. Several php-pages were made, and you can paste this on your website-server. Have seen that in Windows-emaillist-software.
Yes, you can import members to your e-mail list (name and e-mail adress), and this is easy to do (csv or text files).
Another item is the use of your signature. Once you made this, you can simple paste it in all your mails.

About SPAM - spammers - spam software
This is not spam software. Someone who wants sending 1.000's of more spam messages, does not use a software package on a Windows PC and their own ISP. In my country you will be traced and beeing blocked by several ISP's. A real spammer sends his messages through hacked PC's and open relays via servers. (no I am not a spammer)

Spammers won't take any notice of the "not for commercial use" term and condition. They're used to breaking the law and I don't think that either KC Software nor Giveaway have the means to make people abide by it. Spammers will spam you, even if you ask them nicely not to. Last year the community using Blue Frog ended up with a lot of trouble, simply by asking to be taken of the spammers mailing list. You can read more about what happened on:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Frog (don't forget to read the discussion page)

Personally I think it was a good technique and should actually be made mandatory for such software. For those who want spam, let them have it. But for those that don't want it, they should be given more power not to receive it. "Opting out" doesn't work and actually often results into the reverse.

And for those who argue that it's the user who is to blame: Sure, that's very true. But....... Do you give your kid a gun?

As for this kind of software being limited in period and mailing list as trail ware is fine by me. If you're serious about bulk mailing, then it's my opinion that you should dish out. Even if it's for non-profit use. Home user have no real use for this, they can easily make use of the possibility's that email programs already have built in them.

GGAOTD: glad your returning tomorrow. Hope you have something nice in stall for us. After all, we're three games behind now!

It's only when you see scores of sheep drooling mindlessly while they drone on about spamming that you realise how low the average IQ of the GOTD visitor has slipped. If you don't understand the program, why rate it?

It's a very useful piece of software for people who run fansites, groups and organisations of all kinds. Since most of these will be not-for-profit endeavours, there is no problem with the license.

Yes, it seems a little silly to say "customers" in one breath and "not for commercial use" in the next, but it's the software's description. If they changed the wording for the giveaway, another bunch would be whining that it was suspicious and it must indicate it's not the full software.

Frankly, with the ever-increasing number of ingrates who have nothing better to do than criticise and cast innuendo, I'm surprised GOTD can find anyone prepared to give their software away at all. It's a simple choice. Either people start being a bit less reactionary and insulting to every piece of software that comes along or the quality of the software just goes down the drain as more and more publishers decide against giving anything away.

The argument "selling knives or chainsaws does no harm" is entirely out of place in the current situation. Spam and spammers are doing a terrible damage to the Internet, of which we all are part. The economical losses alone seem to be in the tenths of billions of dollars. And then there's the general traffic slowage they cause, which affects everybody; and even the sheer frustration and anger one experiences for not being able to simply have your right to privacy respected. And the time lost filtering out spammers. And the security risks they represent.
This is not a normal state of affairs. The Internet has a severe spam crisis, and we need to be aware of it. No one can shrug it off and claim "innocence" because they are "just" selling the knives and chainsaws. In a situation where there is a frenzy of knife/chainsaw-related crimes, selling them should by all means be prohibited, or at least regulated!
As for the few legitimate companies who could use mass mailing for appropriate reasons, they have many ways to do it without this kind of programs.
KC softwares, like other companies, must be aware of all this. It is very hard to believe that they are doing it to support legitimate businesses. Unfortunately, it is easier to think that they are providing spammers with yet another tool to conduct their irresponsible activities, just for a few dollars more...

Since most of the virulent spam is controlled from crime syndicates and sent from home computers compromised into becoming "bots", those who are fearing this software might increase the amount of spam in the world need not alarm themselves.

Yes this software can be used to send unsolicited e-mail, but if you send more than a couple of pieces and the recipients think it is junk, you risk all of your email being blocked by spam filters and such.

But if you want to get into the same league as the Russian crime syndicates and others, you need to build an army of bots (compromised home computers) that you control, and come up with lists of email addresses, or send to random addresses.

This is a commercial software (for commercial use) so with the restriction "non commercial usage" it is useless. If I wanted to send an email to my friend, I would use outlook instead of this.
P.S. Open Source software is sometimes better than some commercial software.

Merril (#40) says: "... complaining that this software should not be given as it will be used for spamming...is like saying that no supermarket should sell knives as they will be used for stabbing people."
Maybe so. But if you look at the majority of commenters who come here on any given day you might realize that giving away this software is like passing out those same knives to a roomful of sociopathic pre-schoolers. Fortunately the ones who would do the most damage won't be able to figure out how it works.

To the community #42 (AlexSJ); My service was out for quite a long time and unfortunately I had to leave town so I couldn't make a post on leaving town. As it is, I'm still having difficulty as that something when my box went down took out my entire admin interface and trying to work with this, now that I'm back.

To #48 (A. Noid): I thought I wasn't going to reply to you, but I felt I needed to. I know my reviews are respected by many around the GaotD community and I write specifically for the community; However, when I run into a comment like the above comment ( ) I don't think I WANT to have the 'respect' of someone who is willing to threaten their loss of respect over a lack of one single post; How do you know if my wife did not die, or I was hit in a car accident? As it is, I did have to leave town for a specific reason.

Yes, this software could be used for spamming. It also has legitimate uses. You could use it to send an party invite to all your friends. Where I work, we sent out promotional emails to subscribers only using software similar to this. Many of our customers like getting 10% off their whole purchase.

I do think it is funny how many absolutely-no-use-outside-of-business softwares we see here on GAoTD given the non-commercial usage clause. (I'm not complaining though.) I assume one reason may be that the developers hope that you, a home user, will become familiar with this software. Then when your boss asks you to perform a task, for commercial use, you will immediately know what you need and can recommend purchasing their software.

I guess I could use it to email "Holiday Greeting" to my friends, but I think I can already to that with my mail server.

I agree with everyone else who see an appearant conflict with the "Strictly non-commercial usage" clause of the agreement.

Thanks for providing this package, GOTD. I, for one, probably can make good use of it. I publish a blog recommending utility software and Web sites, as a hobby rather than a business. I send emails to people I know and some people who visit the blog, notifying them of the latest updates, semi-manually about once a month. Perhaps today's giveaway will help me stay in touch with my readers more efficiently. Today's package might not be for everyone, but it can be useful to some people who are not spammers. Thank you again!
