#45 GAOTD Installer
As per my last post, try Revo Uninstaller. It's free, and with a little bit of "knowledge" you can get rid of everything.
Then:
1)select the program from the menu and chose uninstall
2) Use the advanced mode setting
3) On the registry tab for the user:class entry uncheck the top level box and check the lowest box in the group
4) click through nexts deleting everything else
5) be happy it's now all gone
6) if you changed the IE settings, set them back
DONE!

HI.
I have downloaded a few things in the past from your site without much problem to my operating system. NO problem, but I only used two or three items in the past few months. But they were not useful and I uninstalled, but there was no problems other than that.

With this- here is what happened.

I did not look at the comments first and I downloaded it because I trusted your site. I did not think twice.

So after I downloaded it I got the message 'registry stopped working.' I found the program and immediately uninstalled it. Then I rebooted my computer and in 10 minutes things seemed fine. I did not have a new homepage, no problems to IE or firefox. I had not tried playing AVI but I think the files are ok.

I used the computer all day from 10am-11pm. I turned it off completely at 11pm. Shut down.

THis morning the next day, I turned it on at 7am. It won't get past the start up. I can not log in or see the desktop. I can even get to log in screen. It won't let me start in safe mode either. IT asks for system reboot, and when I tried the option, it seems to 'work' for about 20 -30 minutes and then it goes back to the main screen asking me if I want to start in safe mode or recovery mode (recommended). I tried starting using f8 key with no avail. I do not know what to do. What do you suggest.

However, unfortunately, I have lost the trust with the downloads here. I won't be downloading anything anymore. Anyone else had this problem. What can I do? Thanks.

quick thought and some notes.
First: this doesn't play nice with Vista x64 or 7x64.

That said:
+
As others said; this is more Extra Video JOINER and transcoder, than creator.

For joining it's a perfect 10. Took input files in AVI and older (RV4) Real .RM files as source and was able to join with no issue.

Quick, easy, not very "advanced"

-
Tries to change your home page, screws up IE8 if you let it change as requested.

Didn't like RM files with Cook and Kooker RealAlt codecs. Could not read Real IVR files. Had to rename RAV and RMV files to RM to get them to work.

Crashes (freezes) when joining MPEG files that were "improperly joined" to begin with (adding two files together made up of older files when the original source files were not properly joined).

Can not frame-scan to force an index rebuild on damaged files

Um, subtitle support? Come now...!

Choices
FREE one stop in-out DivX conversion and joining (all in/DivX out):
NanDub
http://ndub.sourceforge.net/

FREE "everything you need, want, and more"
VDUB
http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

VDubMod
http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubmod/files/

Far more formats supported but costs money
UltraVideoConverter

VDubMod and UVC Still remain the kings for me but this is a nice try.

I heard Vista has a real problem with backward compatibility to XP, so all the people who tried Vista were really taking a "long shot," given what the System Requirements say.

About everyone complaining about getting their systems messed up, the Restore points are good, but (very) occasionally refuse to work. When I try a questionable program, I always load it sandboxed, first:
www.sandboxie.com

Then, if it bombs the system, or the uninstaller disappears, and you want to get rid of it, just dump the box. Unlike restore points, when I tell the box to dump, it does, always, 100% of the time, and my system is back to normal.

#3: "FormatFactory... does not read a lot of the copy protected disks I own, PLUS, I cannot figure out a way to overcome an incompatibility with my Archos 605 player...."

Converting For Most Handheld Players:

1) Research (Google etc) to find out what formats, *at what settings* it supports, &/or if you have to use proprietary conversion software.

2) If you don't find anything, use whatever tools you can find at sites like videohelp.com to figure out what the specs are for video it will accept -- check sample files etc.

3) If you are successful in finding out what it will play, choose your conversion software based on features you like, & set it accordingly. If you don't find specifics, you're limited to trying every app with a template for that handheld, though *sometimes* you can get those specifics from an app's template file(s), which are often xml... they're just not always accurate. :-(

4) If you have to use proprietary software, often you can get better results by prepping the video first, sizing, rotating etc in VirtualDub beforehand to a lossless (or near lossless) video format like HUFFYUV or lagarith or mjpeg. I actually had some success converting the notoriously poor Sandisk converter with PortableAppCreator -- that stopped conflicts with other video software so it actually works now. For the popular amv format, I tried several versions of the converter that I found on-line -- only one works well with our player, & then only if I prep (size & rotate) the video 1st in VirtualDub. For Zune players I found the Xillisoft DVD Ripper app (from GOTD) was the only one that *usually* works for H264, & I tried dozens... sometimes it just takes a bit of patience & work to find what works for you.

------

For the DVD end of things check out DVDFab.

#6: "Vista Users – another program that is Vista-incompatible... Alternative freeware options... HandBrake... MediaCoder... Super."

Respectfully, Extra Video Creator, like other apps using the NCT dlls, will & have always worked in Vista &/or 7 for me. AFAIK many, *but not all* have problems installing.

RE: Alternatives... Super can/will break other video software, & isn't the easiest to use. Same for MediaCoder, which also wants on-line access, & has so-so ratings. Handbrake, while an oldie but goody is after all a Linux app, not without it's problems & eccentricities, nor is it free of causing problems with other Windows software.

NOT saying don't use any of these, but very strongly suggesting folks do a little research, backup &/or at least set a restore point before installing most video-related apps.

* * *

#10: "Since windows movie maker for some reason doesn’t make any movie-files anymore (it stops when rendering), I’m on the lookout for a good alternative editing programme, not too big but with enough features to edit, make transitions and credits etc. Can someone recommend a good FREE programme?"

1st, if Movie Maker is broken, you *may* have other problems with your system, & so anything else you try may/may not be broken as well. Check videohelp.com & doom9.org for alternative editors. VirtualDub is very popular & very fast, but, doesn't do the transitions you ask for. You might want to look at WAX instead, but there is a learning curve. If you want no installation hassles what-so-ever, there are a few Linux Live CDs focusing on video editing etc -- download the iso, burn to disc, then restart, booting from that CD/DVD you just burned.

#22: "Runtime error… I don’t even get a chance to registrate the program"

#23: "This caused the Microsoft registry server to stop and I get runtime error when I try to start it. Now none of my AVI files work."

#24: "Gave about 6 “registration app crashed” errors and then it assumed that install ran fine. "

Some folks seem to always have problems with the NCT dlls registering... Registering them manually always seems to work & the app then works fine. Checking/searching the GOTD archives, & reading comments when this has been a problem in the past, will give you all sorts of methods & specifics to register these files manually if you wish.

#31: "Seemingly does not appear in add/remove or and in the start menu no uninstall option? Does not appear to work on Vista Home 64bit. Now how do I remove this."

Ideally just restore a Restore Point created just before install. Manually you can try something like Revo, or to be 100%, you'd need to use something like Universal Extractor to expand the setup to see what files are involved, then search both for files & registry entries.

Extra Video Creator is another video app using the NCT*.dll code libraries, that some users always report problems with installing in Vista [I assume because it's so heavily based on Vista, these same folks would have problems in 7].

The app itself features a job list, where you add video files to work with. It does not support VOB files [DVD] or separate mpg2 video [m2v]+ audio. Otherwise formats you can use & encode include codecs you already have installed, such as Xvid or DivX. You trim individual video files in the preview window after selecting the video file in the job list -- you drag the 2 triangles at either end of the progress bar to where you want it to start/stop. You select output formats using the tabs in the lower left 1/4 of the program window [AVI, MPEG, WMV, MOV, & RM]. Configuring output for AVI depends on the codec you use -- it opens the codec's settings window -- but besides avi video codecs you're \Severely limited. In XP Pro SP3 32, using DivX 6.8.5 (4 logical CPUs), speed was at best fair, & all 4 cores were approaching 100%. Using the latest Xvid, 4 cores were loaded but 2 only ~50%, plus the Xvid configuration window wouldn't display properly.

RE: program installation, Extra Video Creator would like to send 101 files to Windows' system folder -- 17 NCT related files, 3 video related, 5 Windows related, & 1 for the app itself... Plus the Real Media codec files/folders [75 files/4 folders] normally installed elsewhere by Real's own apps. The NCT files haven't given me any problems personally, & once registered in the system folder are shared by a few apps I got previously from GOTD. The Real files/folders don't belong there, & neither do the files: lame_enc.dll, & gdiplus.dll -- you can often get away with the lame dll in the system folder, but you run the risk of some video/audio apps not working properly unless they use the version they came with. Most all these files as included in the installer are older versions. The app itself takes up just over 4 MB with 89 files, 4 folders in the program file. Registry entries are pretty minimal for Extra Video Creator itself, but you have quite a few from registering the NCT files -- if like me you already have the NCT files installed/registered, just the program keys are new.

Overall if you're a loyal, GOTD regular, you've probably already got better than Extra Video Creator installed. If not, you could easily do worse, though I'd recommend updating lame_enc.dll & RealMediaSplitter.ax [Google], & either deleting the RMBin folder this adds, &/or reinstalling Real or Real Alternative software. For alternatives visit videohelp.com & doom9.org... Please Remember that apps like Super & Format Factory that are often mentioned here can have an impact on other video software you have or may install in the future. They can be fine by themselves, but break a lot of other apps, so backup 1st, or research, or both.

Posibility to improve:to put new function like for an editor video:crop, color corection, watermark to don't be necessary to use another videoeditor.Another possibility:after it create a complex videoeditor, let this soft free for attractiveness. The best examples for how must to loock and work a soft from this categorie are:Wondershare converters(also editor),Iwisoft Flash swf to video,Leawo video converter and Moyea video 4 Web converters. And if are numerous transition effects like:snow, rain, clouds and why not audio effect like:thunder etc. will be more good and easy even for cinema producers.Don't must to wait to rain or to use expansive special effects.

Hey, where's the % of people who like the programs vs. those who don't?

This is the 2nd day in a row now without that, and is THE first thing I go here to see, so as to not waste time, and if negative, and I do look through the comments, it gives and overall idea of why or that something is better/worse than what the general crowd likes.

I also don't appreciate the GOTD contact form link at the bottom of the page here not working, and taking me to a "Page not Found". That tells people you're not in a legitimate business.

It didn't do the install correctly. I have vista home premium. Gave about 6 "registration app crashed" errors and then it assumed that install ran fine.

Of course upon first run it just crashes.

As a developer I have no user restrictions and have disabled all user control access vista annoyances, and use many selected add ons in place of vista standard, like firewalls and others. On a second try, I disabled the firewall and antivirus. Same result.

And it also did something to internet explorer 8, so I had to reinstall it.

First Extra Video Creator is a wrong name for a converter it does not create anything.
Installs fine.
Good clear interface. Really i like the cleanness.
Lacks many good popular formats.(there are so many free alternatives who score better on this)
Cannot resize window (this is always a miss on small screens).
Can not turnoff splash screen and is very slow to move on to the program from there.(always bad not to have a choice here)
Hijacks homepage on IE (leaves the ones from Firefox-Opera and Chrome untouched)This is unacceptable so sneakyware (I compleetly agree with 16#).
Pretty clean uninstall.

Thanks for the offer but i pass on this one.

For 10# Renk have a look at this maybe it is what you are looking for http://www.photofilmstrip.org/home.html

To VISTA users:

When installing, keep clicking on the CANCEL or CLOSE PROGRAM button when you get the "Microsoft RegServer has stopped working" window.

You will have to do this a few times but it will still install...
eventually.

This also happens if you right-click and select
"RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" on the SETUP program.

To: "EXTRA" the program authors. I wish you would sort your programs setup routines to work with VISTA. I've not tried installing on WINDOWS 7 at all.

TO GAOTD users: Please note that VISTA and WINDOWS 7 is not mentioned under System Requirements ( see above ).>>

Thanks for the useful reviews and alternatives, Ashraf; I always read them, and appreciate the time you put into them. I've had mixed luck with FormatFactory, though. It does not read a lot of the copy protected disks I own, PLUS, I cannot figure out a way to overcome an incompatibility with my Archos 605 player. FormatFactory appparently only uses a newer WMV8/9 format (sometimes apparently also referred to as WMV2) that the Archos/Windows Media Player file management software rejects. Loading that Archos -- which is a nice product otherwise -- has become a tedious journey coupling multiple free or paid software tools and many, many hours of conversions between formats. Ugly, especially after DVDNextCopy and AVSVideoTools went to a 1- or 2-year support fee instead of lifetime free updates.

Maybe Extra Video Player will be helpful, though I've still got to deal with the DVD-to-media file step. THANKS GOTD!

Garbage.

Did not run on Vista Ultimate. Just crashed.

Worse, it reset my IE8 and the runonce that normally accompanies a new IE8 install ran - though I've had IE8 installed for several months now!

This is the last straw. I don't know what is going on with the offers here but something is screwy. I'm not going to bother to come here and try the so called "freebies" anymore. I don't like my computer getting messed with like has happened several times recently by GAOTD offerings.

The Good
* Fairly straightforward in terms of how to use.
* Can join/convert (input and output) AVI, MPEG, WMV, MOV, and RM videos.
* Works fairly quickly.
* Gives you the ability to select and use any codec on your computer for AVI and MOV outputs.
* You can configure AVI codecs.

The Bad
* Has output location set to D:/ by default for some reason.
