How many files equal a ton? I really didn't know that software had weight! I thought only hardware had weight. Computers are tricky, and I am so tech ignorant!

The programme downloaded and installed quickly and without problems for me on Windows 8.1. I haven't had time to do much with it yet, but the layout is clear and legible, which is very welcome.

It's good to see comments and feedback on this page from the developers, and when they are willing to act on the suggestions from users, that is a very promising sign.

I shall enjoy getting to know CFC properly soon - I hope!

Thank you, CFC Support, and of course GAOTD.

It took me quite a while to work out how to register it.
I finally worked it out, tested it a few times and I am very happy with it.
Thank you, all concerned.

I don`t see any way to search an entire drive.

I selected drive C: but it ran for about 4 seconds and found nothing.

As others have commented, the color scheme hurts my eyes and the method of deleting only certain files is disguised.

It always opens Maximized and cannot be Minimized while scanning...annoying.

Cancelling the search DOES work but it seems to want to finish the folder it's working on before ending. Depending on the folder, that can be a long time.

And yes, the price is too high.

It downloaded and registered, it was real easy (Win 7, 64bit). I selected ALL FILES, just to see what it would do., Clone File Checker reviewed all three separate drives (500GB, 500GB, and 750GB). It took about 3hrs (two of the drives are USB 2), and found: 34,562 duplicate files, for a total of 50.646GB of wasted space. Needless to say I have some work to do. I been tossing backups and files from my various PC's since Win 95 on a variety of PC's and external drives. Always good to have a backup! I guess I'm a bit of a packrat. I like how you can archive the search, choose smaller groupings, drives, etc., and a thumbnail to see what's in the file. I had 24 copies of one jpg as I was reviewing (briefly) the list of duplicate files. I like how it groups each duplicate file. I had 12,892 groups.

This is a keeper! I will have to narrow my searches to make duplicate file decisions. At least I ran the program prior to my comments. This program works great!

I installed the program on Win-10 Pro, completed the registration email and all without problem.
I connected my old data drive and was able to find many dupes between it and the new drive.
The program works pretty well and I will be keeping it for now!

I'm not sure why many had problems getting this up and registered, email and etc. I am on fiber
& things are quick here!

I am posting my findings on FB!

Thank You Sorcim Tech and GOTD!

Today, I'm going to use the word "lack" many times...

This product lacks testing: cancelling search does not work.

In my TEMP partition there is a small folder for various tests. I duplicated 2 files (an image and a text file) with copy/paste in a new sub-folder. It found nothing.

I can feel the despise and a total lack of modesty in CFC's answer to comment #12.

Lack of modesty too in the price tag, that's for sure.

Lack of modesty too, in not doing things better than ANY free alternative that existed long before Sorcim was created. For example, take the tiny textctrl to edit file types (in settings). They don't know how to popup a bigger list box? What are all those MS developer's resources for? Software design and user experience, anybody? Oh well.

I had a great duplicate checking app a long time ago. This app would identify duplicates, and then select the first one as a keeper, and de-select the remaining duplicates, making it easy to clean up a lot of files, at the potential risk of deleting ones in folders you'd rather keep. The software mitigated this by offering two options. As you were looking at your duplicate files, you could select a file, and flag that file's directory as either 1) the default directory to keep (it would re-calculate the found duplicates, and if one of the duplicates was in this directory, flag it as the one to keep, and the others to discard), or 2) ignore any duplicates in this directory (it would then remove any found duplicates in the list in that directory, protecting them from accidental deletion).

I haven't installed this app, because I'm happy so far with my music and picture management, but if the current version of your app, or a future one, were to have these options, I would consider installing it as an occasional check and safeguard against duplicates.

Dear User, CFC is providing lot of features and here is answer for your queries.

1. CFC has both Options 'include' or 'Exclude' specific directories during scan even in settings you can add any desired directories to ignore list permanently so they would not be looked for Duplicates.

2. CFC Provide file Selection options like 'Most Recent creation Date', 'Least Recent Creation Date', 'Most Recent Modified Date', 'least recent Modified Date' on duplicate files Results.

3. CFC also have Deletion with Backup support option for users who want extra care to treat their data to be safe from accidental deletion. (Back up can be view from history tab from where you can restore or delete it as well)

4. CFC has 3 mode 'File Search' , 'Music Scan' and 'Itune Scan'.

Thanks hope you will like it.

I have installed the app, just because I wasn't happy with the lack of effort on my part.

Yes, this software could certainly use these two functions.

Also, there is a "Quick Fix" option (immensely scary, no bloody way would I do this!), but I'm guessing that the Quick Fix selects one of the listed duplicates to keep, tags the others for deletion, then backs up and deletes the files. What about giving users the option of that first step, the defaulting, then allow them to review the list and choose to delete? The first option has no control, and the second option is too manual. Helpers would, well, help!

1. CFC has both Options ‘include’ or ‘Exclude’ specific directories during scan even in settings you can add any desired directories to ignore list permanently so they would not be looked for Duplicates.

Agreed, but it is much more powerful to do this after the fact. When I start looking for duplicates, I may not know where they'll be found. After the fact, I can see it included directories I don't want touched. I can add those to the "Exclude From Scan" and re-run the lengthy process again, but better would be to select a file in the returned results, and choose "Exclude from Results" and have the program remove the potential duplicates from my list, without requiring me to re-run the scan. Very powerful.

2. CFC Provide file Selection options like ‘Most Recent creation Date’, ‘Least Recent Creation Date’, ‘Most Recent Modified Date’, ‘least recent Modified Date’ on duplicate files Results.

3. CFC also have Deletion with Backup support option for users who want extra care to treat their data to be safe from accidental deletion. (Back up can be view from history tab from where you can restore or delete it as well)

4. CFC has 3 mode ‘File Search’ , ‘Music Scan’ and ‘Itune Scan’.

All of these are pre-configuration options, but what I'm suggesting is result-list pruning and configuration, after the search is performed, and will not require the list to be re-run after selecting new options. It will turn your app into a powerhouse, empowering the user to make intelligent and sweeping configuration selections that can make the task very simple. As it stands now, after the app does it's work, it stands back and says, "I'm done my part, now you get in there and do yours." Nope, not interested. The app stops short of being truly useful.

An example - I scanned three of my hard drives, a task that took almost an hour. It generated many groups of duplicates, and it returned way too many. I enabled the Images option, and the Ignore files smaller than 64 KB (the drop-down list is good, but a text field would be better -- I wanted to select 40 KB, but that wasn't an option), then ran again. A half-hour later, and I have a list containing 1267 duplicate groupings. This will require me to click on the results listing a minimum of 1267 times. Sounds like a make-work project, rather than a time and space-saving project.

I see I have an image in there that is duplicated. One copy is in a well-named folder, and the other in a temporary location. I would love to be able to select the file in the well-named place, and tell the software to automatically keep any files in that location, and automatically remove any duplicates of those files that are in other locations. That's more than 100 clicks I wouldn't have to do.

This is the sort of things that computers are most excellent at. Why require the human to click click click, looking for patterns in the list, when the computer is a pattern-processing machine? You've come a long way with this software -- time to make it into something AMAZING!

An example of what this could look like, from a non-clone-deleting source, is Process Monitor from a company called SysInternals (now fully owned by Microsoft). They had a problem, thousands of lines, and helping the user to make sense of it all. The method they came up with is both innovative and incredibly powerful. I strongly suggest giving it a look, to see what UI elements you can incorporate into this app. Not to mention, if you need to debug what's running on your machine, it's a great (and Free!) tool for the job -- just be careful, it can overwhelm you quickly until you leverage the power of their filtering process!

Works well, they had to send me a registration code, which I then had in 5 minutes.
It would be good if you could put in a phrase to exclude, I have 340 duplicates, but it is the original and also a folder named SD card where I keep music for my phone etc from my collection. Of course, because it is in my music folder, they come up as duplicates. And yes, I could move it out of the Music folder, but the phrase exclusion would help in other instances as well, in my opinion.
Good program.

The program seems useful enough, just three observations:

1-The default "quick fix" is really unnerving, especially if one accidentally clicks on whatever first shows up on the program!

2-The colors are hard on the eyes, I did not see an option for darker or inverted colors.

3-The font is too small, did not see an option for that either.

Thanks for this GOTD.
I'm confused by the GIU. It found many dups. I selected the Videos tab, selected 3 files to erase.. no erase button! the "quick fix" wants to treat all files (or not? no indication). How do I remove just the selected files?

Also, does the software compare purely by name and size? does it hash all files or just those found by the name&size filter?

Nice feature to be able to independently compare tags and/or content!

However, particularly in the case of music, oftentimes the same song is included on multiple albums by an artist. In such a case you prefer to NOT eliminate the song from all but one album (although it would still be nice to save disk space).

To replace the extra copies of, say, a MP3 file with normal space-saving Windows "shortcuts" to a single "master copy" of the song might work OK when playing that song directly on the original cleaned-up computer storage drive; but attempts to copy the song to another storage device, computer, or MP3 player would result in only the orphaned shortcut being copied with no available master copy on the device to properly reference.

I.E., the copied shortcut of the "song" would not play in the new location as the shortcut by itself is not an actual MP3 file and has lost its reference to the master copy back on the original drive.

The same case can be made for picture collections: you might want to repeatedly include a picture of your favorite aunt or vacation spot in several folder collections.

Perhaps the author of today's offer would want to consider adding the ability to substitute symbolic and/or junction links for the detected duplicate files/folders. This is a built-in, but little used, feature of Windows NTFS storage devices.

(Actually, recent versions of Windows comes pre-configured with some commonly-used folders set up this way for "convenience". However, I've noticed that it sometimes causes confusion for some uninformed folks, as in "...hey, I thought I put that file in another folder -- how did it end up in here, here, and here?..."!)

In that way the disk physically holds only one copy of a file/folder, thus saving space, but that one file becomes listed in multiple places as an actual file, not a shortcut. File operations such as copying to another device, say, a MP3 player, results in the actual MP3 song file being copied.

This can be found in other utilities such as Junction Link Magic and Duplicate & Same Files Searcher:

I knowingly and purposely have duplicates of files in the hard disc.
This is for organisational purpose. Sometimes the content or nature of a file is such that it qualifies to be included in more than one folder.
For ease of finding and quick reference, it is copied to both folders.
It is a waste of space? So what? These are small text or PDF files.
Hard disc space is cheap.
About checking for same content in music files.
I do keep music files of a song sung by an artiste when he or she was about 20 years old and then the same song sung by the same artiste when he or she was 50+ years old.
They can be argued to be the same. But to the listener of the song, they are completely different.

You are right Ric but every computer user has different preferences about organizing their files. The purpose of using duplicate finders is not creating free space alone. Such a software helps people organize their data too. Many users do not like to keep the duplicate files because it negatively affects their computing experience.

For instance see this testimonial of our user Paul:

//My family and I had accumulated over 8000 photos over a dozen years of picture snapping. Always being careful to back-them-up on external drives. After several "migrations" from older computers or hard-drive we ended up with a real mess; lots of duplicates, same file names, modified file names and misnamed. It was time to clean them up. After a short search on the web I chose CLONE FILES CHECKER and put it to work on well over 56,000 jpg files! The work saved us over 32 gig of wasted space.//

Love the website of this softwaredeveloper. Program screenshot: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/cf/CFC09.PNG Add a partition (left) click on start search (right), and after a five step selection a notification appears with a "quick fix" and a "review & fix" option. If you click "quick fix" you have a backup option available: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/cf/CFC04.PNG
If you click on "review & fix", you can select the duplicates with the matching button right below on different aspects (keep newest one of the duplicates for instance). You can also select the duplicates manually by clicking checkboxes. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/cf/CFC01.PNG
After that you click on "select action". A window appears: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/cf/CFC02.PNG . Very easy.
In "settings" option (top right) you can choose hashmethods (different methods to create a checksum to make sure that the duplicate file is exactly the same).
Advanced settings shows the folders that are excluded (watch out xp users, the documentfolder of a user is automatically excluded.).
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/cf/CFC05.PNG . Filter settings: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/cf/CFC08.PNG
The History screen looks like this, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/cf/CFC03.PNG

Apart from a few errors it works good, but it is slow. A full search on duplicates on my hard drive took 3.5 minutes. The ease of use is one of the stronger points of this program.

Slow? You do realize if you have typically hundreds of thousands of files that the contents of each one must be analyzed to provide a unique "signature" which then, in turn, must be compared against all others?

Doesn't sound so slow to me, particularly if it is the first run on your machine. Most other similar applications are also "slow" in this regard.

Do you have another previous, comparable duplicate/clone file detector application you are comparing the run time/speed against?

This is a program I'll definitely need soon.
Big plus is that it also finds hard drives in the network (I don't understand why this is not a common feature by now, all my files are on the NAS, so I have no use for a program that finds duplicates, but only on internal HDs).
Clone Files Checker installed and registered without problems for me (Win 10, 64 bit, Firefox 41.0b9), went through my image folder on the NAS quite quickly and spotted the duplicates I knew were there (and also some I didn't know about).

I did press the "Review" button (can't imagine ever letting the program delete files by itself) and deleted some of the clones which worked fine too.
Will play around with it some more, but this seems to be an excellent piece of software - thank you very much for sharing it here.

I know exactly HOW I store my Media Files! I know that for reasons known to me I HAVE TO keep certain Duplicates - for one instance emptying camera's mem cards onto my PCs/Laptop and not always deleting internal camera Folders, thus duplicating them on next save. Bad habit, but SO WHAT! I have space for that. How many times (being on the subject of Camera Folders) I might only delete images from internal cam Folders, so next lot of pics will have 'THE SAME' names within Folders not deleted, but being ENTIRELY different Photos? This is just one example of how EASY programs such as Today's Giveaway could get rid of something THEY class as 'Duplicates', if judging these Files by 'number names' alone..?!!

All I'm saying is to be really careful HOW to approach this kind of Programs, NOT whether to use them at all!

Not for me I'm afraid for reasons explained above (..without even going into music/video Files I too have my own system when downloading and keeping, or looking into Programs/Games Files) That, and.. a notion I'm one of those messy PC users, cheeky!:)

Dear User, CFC Identify Duplicate File by comparing file's Content not file's name. So you have no reason to worry about having file names similar but different contents. It only brings duplicate files which have same content not having similar file name.

fran, try setting your camera to produce only sequentially numbered files, and to not restart the number sequence upon format or insertion of a new memory card. That cured the problem of duplicate names on different images for me.

It is very late here, so I will uninstall your clone program in the morning. I have tried numerous times to register it, yes using the same email each time. I cannot see the code. Sorry, but I refuse to fight any more with this. I use one browser. Enough already. Thanks for trying....

What parameteres (size, checksum, content, name etc.) does the soft check in order to determine that the files are duplicates? I searched the homepage of the software and have not found any such information which, in my opinion, is vital to a user to decide whether to try this soft, or not.

Reply   |   Comment by Marek  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

go to settings screen and see options. CRC32 , MD5 and SHA1 options are available

Thank you for your valuable reply. Still, it appears that a prospective user needs to install the software first in order to learn whether it is at all usable to him/her. Very bad and disappointing developer’s policy in a world full of other similar software. Information for more advanced users should be provided on the software homepage or such users will give up any attempt to try the software.

It seems to me that it is just another premature offer of the developer. Considering screenshots on the developer’s site, there is no preview window to view duplicates – a feature that is a more and more commonly applied by other developers of such software (including those applications already mentioned on thsi forum).

What I would suggest is also a feature that allows the user to chose search patterns such as the degree of similarity, and removal patters allowing to delete duplicates by location, size, date, etc. It is true that considerably few similar applications offer resaonable options for that purpose, but there are some really smart applications (such as Anti-Twin) that give a broad range of such options which are very, very helpful to users with considerably large file archives. The developer could consider the "fate" of a user who has several hundred duplicates to check one by one.

Nonetheless, I am grateful for this offer to GAOTD and the developer.

My main email address contains a hyphen (-) and some sites (including the registration page) does not recognise my email as a valid one and I got a blank instead of a code.

I tried again using an alternative email (without a hyphen) an received the code immediately.

Just a tad fiddly to select the drive(s) that you wish to scan but able to select all drives or single drive plus all or individual folders and selectable file types (Music, Images, Etc as you might expect).

For me it fails when the results are shown as you are unable to list files in size order, date order, Etc and for me that makes this a useless program as I dont intend to go through a list of 6000+ files to identify the odd few that I might prefer to keep.

I feel this to be a big omission and what I would expect to be an obvious 'feature' to include (version 3.1 perhaps?)

Thanks GOATD but I fear this CFC might be bad for my computers health.

Does this software handle html-files as one unit?
All the others I know don't, so that files in "name-files" are treated as doublettes although they should not.

We don't have specific way to filter html only files. However, the software should find duplicates of such type.

Free software are seldom updated and don't take pain if they result in data destruction.

That is definitively a falsely claim. There are several if not many examples of data destruction by paid software, beginning with Windows itself.

@CFCSupport
>Free software are seldom updated
Before making your comment, you should have taken notice that the mentioned Nir Sofer program "searchmyfiles" version 2.61 shows at least 50 update notices since the version 1.0 was released. The changelog details are clearly displayed on the page for the NirSoft program. Nir Sofer/Nirsoft programs have a great reputation of constant improvements, and full disclosure of what changes were made. Clone Files Checker is at version 3.0 currently, so it must have been updated quite a few times itself, but I do not seem to be able to locate where you disclose what those updates consisted of on your website. Where are you hiding the changelog and why are you hiding them in the first place?

I noticed that your program installs Taglib-sharp, a library to read metadata in media files. That would be an important part of your program. I am sure you must have paid a lot to use the library, unless you downloaded it free of charge from GitHub?

Also, your program installs Ionic's Zip Library. That is a nice little library written by Dino Chiesa. Were you required to pay a license to use the Ionic Zip Library? There are other zip libraries available, and the Ionic one is a very nice one, so how much of the decision to use it was influenced by it being "free software" (and has had several updates)? Oh yes, Dino takes the work very seriously, and would be very upset should his library ever result in "data destruction."

Your WPF Toolkit and the Extended version are offered under the Microsoft Public License, which means you are using "free software" again. The WpfAnimatedGif library from GitHub is a handy addition when using the WPF toolkit isn't it?

Oh yes, the XXHash.dll file you use is also "free software" as well isn't it?

Also, if you feel "Free software are seldom updated and don’t take pain if they result in data destruction" then you should consider getting your website clonefileschecker.com off of the hosting software that makes your website available to the world because you are using RedHat Linux based hosting. No one pays for the Linux operating system because it is Open Source. You might want to switch to Windows Server based hosting, but then again, you are using PHP ("free software" with many updates since its beginning) on your support page (http://www.clonefileschecker.com/support.php), so that might be a deal breaker right there.

It seems like your business depends on "free software." The RedHat organization and your hosting provider would not be in business were it not for "free software." I might add, "that to get to the level of sophistication as it is today," there have been many updates to Linux, Apache, and most other Open Source "free software" programs your business depends on, and some of those updates were ones I worked on. I will get a lot of mileage out of your comment at national software conventions; you will not!

Hello guys I don't mean any disrespect to the awesome developers of free software of any company. I meant the free software which are not regularly updated and are often found distributing malicious toolbars along with them. I take my words back if they have hurt any hardworking developer of free software.

Reply   |   Comment by CFC Support  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

@CFCSupport
>I meant the free software which are not regularly updated and are often found distributing malicious toolbars along with them.
But you made your comment in direct response to a NirSoft competing program, which does not in any way represent what you said. No one would take what you said as what you now say you meant. You clearly spoke without thinking first, and didn't expect anyone to recognize or point out that your business depends a lot on "free software."

I do not disagree with your business model; in fact, I think it is wise to leverage the "free software" available to you. That is the intent of the authors of those free libraries. I agree there are some bad "free software" out there, but when you make a comment such as yours in response to a program that has the reputation of just the opposite, someone is going to notice. You might consider adding to your product and to your website a credit to the many "free software" options that help make up your business model.

I also commend you on being responsive in the forum, and helping to ensure everyone gets a registration code to see what your program does. I see that you are gathering some excellent pointers on how to improve your product.

If you would produce a changelog, I think you might be moving into a more favorable light. Best of luck to you and your product.

The registration information then appeared above the boxes.

A test on two almost identical image files, one byte modified in hex editor, were tagged as identical.

The two files had different hash values and so were not identical and as such should not have been marked as duplicates.

Just to be sure that it was not comparing the actual image, compared the same image in JPG and PNG format. If it was checking the actual image they should have been given as duplicates but were not.

Feel that the developer should explain somewhere the actual method of ascertaining if it is a duplicate or not.
