A big compressed file for a graphics program but only took less than 20 seconds to download. Looks great. Will install and try later.

I don't know how to edit my previous comment but I'd like to add that as a browser, AS seems to be significantly modeled on Lightroom and offers nice tools like 1-5 ratings that FS lacks (FS has only mark/unmark); it also very conveniently has most editing functions quickly accessible directly from the browser rather than having to switch to a distinct editing page. The editing tools themselves are more sophisticated and robust, e.g., showing histograms and before and after comps when one clicks the contrast/color editing icons. Looks terrific to me. Dual monitor support, please, Ashampoo.

My free browser/editor is Faststone (though I primarily use Lightroom and Photoshop for serious editing). Downloaded and installed AS after a little cookie dance. Have not tested really but did notice no dual monitor support which FS has and is often useful: use one for browsing, editing and the other for full screen image display. Ashampoo looks nice, though, on a single.

I posted the offer on FB, logged into my account with Ashampoo and got the key instantly, and installed it. It works and I did try a few of it's features with good results! Since I use their products I didn't have any real issues. I also have the full Adobe Suite so I am covered in any case.

I can see the value of this software for my friends that do not have similar products but would like to explore working with their photos. I went back and reported my findings on my FB Page and reminded them of the free install time limits.

Thank You Ashampoo and GOTD!

Have a Great Day,

Rick Martin

GOTD sends the download link, after downloading the readme file tells you how to contact Ashampoo to register and get your product key. So it's a two step process.

Ashampoo PhotoCommander is great when previewing video snippets (in 3gp, flv, mov etc.)as long as corresponding video codecs are installed (using PhotoCommander 11 the K-lite basic package will do).

One big advantage Photo Commander 12 has over Zoner Photo Studio 16 (i don't have 17) is that the PNG transparent files show up with the 'transparent' grey/white chequered background. This distinguishes it from PNG files with solid white background. I have hundreds of PNG files that needs sorted and find this a great help. Commander 12 also shows NEF (Nikon RAW) files. Most EPS files also show up in preview as well as thumbnail (on Zoner 16 EPS files will show up in thumbnails but not always in the larger PREVIEW mode).

With the discounts offered on both, Ashampoo Photo Commander 12 comes out a lot cheaper than Zoner 17. Commander version 11 used to freeze on me when I tried to open extra large files while Zoner 16 had that annoying 'upgrade to 17' app loading on computer startup like a trojan. I removed them both, but I will keep Commander 12 and maybe buy it if Ashampoo offer me a more generous UPGRADE price from 'paid for' version 11. I like the fact that Ashampoo make available and always allow buyers to download software no matter what version or how long ago it was bought.

Zoner shows the transparency grid in the editor but not in the viewer. Also, Zoner has way more options than Ashampoo. Better yet, StylePix Pro which has layers like in Photoshop.

Reply   |   Comment by xenox  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

ZENOX - Both Photo Commander and Zoner are only good for viewing and sorting images. They are useless at editing images. Photo editing should only be done by serious editing software of which there are many. Looking thru hundreds of images singularly in 'editor' mode will take forever.

Ashampoo Photo Commander is an easy to use image cataloging app with some basic editing & annotation features. IMHO it's a good starter app for people who don't store their pictures online, and aren't really into photo editing -- it helps you keep track of your photos, lets you do some minor editing if you want or need, & lets you do stuff like print a simple card using your picture.

The popular Zoner is a step up in terms of capabilities, but that means that by necessity it's more complicated & a bit harder to use. Zoner doesn't quite make it to being a serious photo editor, but it does let you do more than Photo Commander, providing you spend the extra time to learn the software.

Corel's PaintShop Pro sits at the top of combined cataloging & editing apps, with an image editor that can rival Photoshop. It does require learning, and can take a fair amount to take full advantage of its features that include layers. PaintShop Pro can also be the best value if you catch it on sale [for around $20-$30], particularly when Corel get's ready to release a new version.

For the last several years it's been possible to buy cameras with interchangeable lenses [e.g. DSLRs] for as low as $200, & sometimes even less, making cameras that can save pictures in the RAW format fairly popular. A RAW image file basically contains all the data the camera's sensor captured. When a camera saves a .jpg photo, & most cameras that can shoot RAW will also save .jpg, it processes all that RAW data into an image you can view & easily work with. The advantage of having a RAW image file is that you can then control all of that processing yourself.

The popularity of shooting & saving RAW images has caused a number of companies to release cataloging software that specialize in processing those RAW images. Probably the most popular one is Adobe's Lightroom -- Corel has their competing Aftershot, which can be on sale Much cheaper, while you can sometimes pick up an older version of DxO Optics Pro for free. You generally do not perform your final editing in these apps, but control how the jpg images they can export look. The original RAW images are normally left untouched, so you can always create a new version of a jpg file, & Lightroom can save every processing step you perform as a sort of script, so you can apply it to all or several photos, or go back to a RAW image & change or tweak your processing without starting from scratch.

The reason for those last 2 paragraphs when we're talking about Photo Commander, is that Photo Commander, Zoner, & PSP are also supposed to handle RAW images. They do not handle processing RAW images the same way more specialized software can, & by the same token, there's little reason or benefit to using software intended for RAW images with jpg potos. It's possible to do both -- there may be cases when that makes sense to you -- but don't buy Lightroom just to handle your jpg collection, & don't save your pictures as larger RAW format files if they're just going into Photo Commander [or Zoner etc.].

Hi, As usual those familiar with Ashampoo Photo Commanders, or having collection of previous Versions on their machines - wonder what's new!? Any new features, effects, tricks, 'goodies' perhaps?? Well, here is direct link to see what they've done since APC 11: https://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pde/1818/multimedia-software/photo-commander-12
The whole list of 'new' and even bigger of 'improved', hmm. OK, lets look at one specific aspect..

Since Photo Commander isn't my regular every-day Photo Tool, but used occasionally for this, that and the other - I keep my eye quite firmly and follow it's Section and promise - 'PhotoDesign slideshows, calendars or high-quality collages. Create stunning panorama pictures or surprise your friends with self-made greeting cards.' AND.. have to say they STILL have the same old PROBLEM of fitting Photos of various shapes and parameters into those Designer Frames, Calendars, High-Quality Collages, E-Cards, Shapes - automatically(!!)? Why are we still left with manual fiddling and time-consuming tasks to Create something to indeed 'surprise friends'..?? Why is this part of ALL Photo Commanders still a 'poor Cinderella' - while there is literally hundreds of similar Software and Apps (both as download versions, or as online Tools) on the market doing it SO WELL and without any hassle whatsoever?? Beats me!.. I can name but a two really decent 'ancient' Photo Software which dealt with Framing and Card/Collage aspect in proper manner, otherwise the list is too long - that is Corel PSPs and secondly ArcSoft..
I suggest to Ashampoo Photo Commander Designers that for that asking price(!?) - next time really IMPROVE it, or drop this kind of Creativity altogether. IMHO.

Downloaded this program and installed it with no problems. Registration (getting the product key) was quick and no hassle. It does see and act upon my CR2 RAW images yet the processing is quite limited. Adobe and even Zoner do it better with more controls. It's way to generalized in saturation controls specifically. The programs interface is decent, with a photostrip present at the bottom of the window in editing mode. Some of the optimizing effects work well enough but it's not good for those images which require more specific and localized editing. For quick, down and dirty editing and effects processing this program serves its purpose. A keeper for those moments when I'm pressed for time.

The program claims to be "ideal for professional use", but this is most certainly an overstatement. No 16-bit colour depth support by itself means it is useless "for professional use". I can't say whether it is "easy to use", everything is very basic. Metadata handling is pathetic, it looses everything from the raw file and it can only write some iptc tags, without utf-8 as an option. Made me angry, like versions 9 and 10 did. Zoner is something completely different. This one will be uninstalled immediately.

Sorry! I had severe dental problems and couldn't answer yesterday in time! Many thanks to helpful commentors! But now:
Urgent correction of my yesterday comment (Perfect Hotkey 1.32) concerning my personal local startpage:

Somehow when copying text from editor the usual " sign (quotation mark, at my keyboard: Shift 2) was changed to another variant and startpage html code didn't work.
And here is the manually corrected version (local startpage only) as a whole:

(My Start.html is based on a local startpage from a now outdated browser named CAB for GUI computer ATARI ST/Falcon more than 20 years ago and has worked all the time. I mainly added more and more HREF lines. I published here only a short extract to show the concept. This is part of my own startpage. I have cancelled hundreds of lines. And both google and ixquick are working.)

How to construct your own startpage:
As GOTD allows comments with some html commands (see section "Leave a comment" please) I here had to exchange angle brackets to square brackets [] before publishing. You have to change them back before usage.
Exactly:
First steps: Please change left square brackets to left angle bracket (smaller-than sign) everywhere and
right square brackets to right angle brackets (greater-than sign) by change command of your editor in the following html script lines:

[HTML][head][title]Start-Seite[/title][/HEAD]
[body]
[font size=2]
[P][STRONG][IMG SRC="html/r_ball.gif” width=13 height=13 ALT=""]
Search [A HREF="http://www.ixquick.com/"]ixquick[/A] || [/STRONG]
[A HREF="http://www.google.de"]Google[/A]
Please add duplicates here and edit to your needs! (Leave out this line before storing!)
[/STRONG]
[/font]
[/body][/html]
Last step: Save the resulting file as e.g. START.html and declare it startpage (home) in your browser.

Downloaded, installed, activated just fine. Registration e-mail was instantaneous, per usual, with Ashampoo.

It's not as robust as Zoner but it is easier to use and doesn't force an advertisement every other launch like Zoner does.

Ashampoo Photo commander versions have been passing here for some time now. This new version seems to be a bigger change in the workflow than previous versions according to several reviews. This is how PC12 looks in "explorermode" with dark skin: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/photcom12/00.JPG (With the very very small sprocket wheel to can choose between display options.)
This is the editor interface: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/photcom12/00c.JPG
There are two bars, one menbar blue with uppercase letters, but small, and a big letter buttonbar. They don't seem to communicate with each other like in offices ribbon bar. Tried some things like cropping a picture. There are 4 options.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/photcom12/01crop.JPG
Rectangular select works logically. but the freestyle crop only produces a menu (after closing the selection) without a crop option...
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/photcom12/02crop.JPG
Contrast and colors: very easily set, but in the dark skin very difficult to see. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/photcom12/03contrastcolors.JPG
There are lots of effects, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/photcom12/03effects.JPG , but sadly you can only set the strength. There is for instance a dotted mesh effect, but you can not set the size of the dots...
There are some nice features like the color accent feature. Choose a color and only that color will show in the picture, rest will be greyscale. But... I was somewhat baffled by the way it operates: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/photcom12/04.JPG
Well, some optimizing then, it should offer a lot: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/photcom12/07.JPG
Strangely optimizing is not done with a before and after picture standardly, you have to set it manually to do that.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11463671/gotd/photcom12/08.JPG . I found it irritating that it often sets itself back to "compare off" mode.
My conclusion: There are a lot of functions, but frustratingly I could not find a general way for things to work (so working intuitively was possible). The uppercase small type menu, and the big type bar below don't seem to interact logically. The very simple functions i tried were implemented in a way that I really needed the directions in the windows that popped up; few things worked intuitive and logical in this program. I can't determine what is the use of this program. In my opinion the picture/movie manager part of the interface is not very well thought of. As a picture editor there are some nice features but very few settings available to give it the personal effect. I like ashampoo products a lot but this is not one of them. To me, version 12 is a step down.

Slightly annoyed because I bought this from Ashampoo less than a month ago.

Personally I don't think its as good as programs like Picasa or Zoner, it definitely doesn't handle large collections on network drives very well, keeps saying "not responding".

Have been keeping a copy of Ashampoo Photo Commander in my PC since version 7.
Been stepping through the changes to Version 8, 9, 10, 11 and now 12.
But nowadays mostly use ACDSee Photo Manager. The other good Photo manager is Zoner.
