Hi. In short: for-get-it ! Tested — with "High quality engine" option checked, of course, at 900 kbs on a 720 x 576 pixels (PAL DVD) sample. Conclusion: ONCE MORE, a software that goes directly to garbage, "thanx"...

... unless you're willing to waste storage space, i.e. encode at 1500 if not 2000 kbs, which is total nonsense (at 720 x 576 px), since that's NOT what AVC H.264 codec was meant for (but high compression ratios: around 1000 kbs, or higher: between 1000 and 500 kbs).

Like the incredible amount of (re)encoding gadgets available, at 900 kbs, "WinX DVD Platinum 7.5.7" produces, mostly: terrible artefacts, blurs everything, and is not even fast *, "+" no two-pass encoding option (of course) !

* Besides, it crashes; so you must check "Safe mode" option, which slows down the encoding process.

Now, if you (re)encode DVD's for postage stamp sized screens exclusively, such a mickey mouse piece of software might be of some (simplified) use to you... Otherwise & again: just forget it.

I tested this with two different DVD-R's ripping the discs into MP4 format video files. With both titles HandBrake did a noticeably better job of ripping the video, even with DVD X Ripper set to the quality engine. Handbrake took about 10 minutes longer to do the rip. I'm not sure why people like this software so much--it's easy to use and fast but that's not a good trade-off for quality.

Very pleasing to see this here again having lost my previous version in a PC crash.
Seriously good software from Digiarty, so serious thanks to them and to GOTD. :)

@MikeR #10 - Thanks for that info. It won't affect some ppl because we can run most of what's on gotd using Linux. I'd rather buy software from vendors on gotd rather than waste money slowing down my pc's with so-called windows. Just remember W.I.N.E. - it's not an emulator.

Thank you gotd for running this again today.

It would have been nice if it had mentioned this is a limited time use piece of software. You don't find that out until you install it. I have an older version that works just fine so I was hoping to use the latest even without support. Basically it just hassles you to upgrade.
I immediately uninstalled it.

Sure it's FREE, but only for a limited time.

Nice converter, but cut/trim features is very poor. No button for set start and end point, trim no show start and end point in preview window, no multicut/merge. These features better in Aiseesoft converters, please add to all WinX converters too!

#7: "I don’t see a big advantage to 8.1.2 – a change in the desktop, a change in the start but nothing, that justifies the “leap” from 8 to 10."

Plenty of rumors & speculation -- one attributed to Microsoft employees is that a fair amount of software searches for the version number of Windows using 9*, with the star being the wildcard character. Had they named it Windows 9, it might have been lumped in with win95, 98, & 98SE.

* * *

#16: "can this giveaway, winxdvd, shrink a dual layer disc to fit on standard single layer dvd ?"

You can use it for that, but it's not IMHO recommended to *shrink* any video DVD from dual layer to single by re-encoding it. Many [most?] copy apps let you select just the main movie, which should often fit on a single layer disc once you get rid of stuff like trailers & languages you don't want/need. When & if that won't work, dual layer blank discs are just too cheap nowadays to justify the time, effort, & loss of quality.

Or use the WinX DVD Ripper more as intended & convert to AVC, where quality loss should be minimal as long as you allow a high enough bit rate. And there are more than plenty of ways to get that AVC video playing on your TV.

Guys, Digiarty, I have the last version. Since we can't update the prior versions, do I uninstall the old one first or just install over the existing one?

I love this software! It works faster and better than WonderFox. The special offer ( http://www.winxdvd.com/specialoffer/ ) is well worth the price. A few months back I bought the Spring Gift Pack for $45.95 and do not regret it one bit. Installs on 5 computers with lifetime updates - you can't go wrong with this deal! What are you waiting for?

@ #17 Ginz, that pop-up window is referring to special offer to buy lifetime license which gives you free upgrades, as per the bold text on the description above. Past giveaways of Digiary products have worked basically forever but they are not updatable.

I've been using WinX DVD Ripper for many years, and it has always worked very well for me. This GoTD version and the previous one are set to always check for updates on launch, and you can't change that setting. Note that you can download the installer exe directly from the web page where you get the activation code, which is a bit smaller than the GoTD file.

I have been using this software for almost 4 years now, since the first time I discovered it on Giveaway of the Day. It has been a staple for DVD backups on my system. As an experienced home user, I highly recommend it if you want to digitally store or backup your expensive DVDs. Grab it while you can.

After activating, got pop-up window saying "Time-limited Special Offer". So, will this version expire? After how long?
Or does that refer only to buying a "Full Version"?
I hit "Cancel" but kept what I installed.
Thanks.

Hi, Thanks GOTD and Digiarty Software for this latest version of WinX DVD Ripper. I had previous Giveaway, so it's nice to see and use Platinum 7.5.7 :)

I don't need to mention, I'm sure, that this Software and Company have very good reputation and installing their Products itself is actually a hassle-free and pleasant experience. I did a bit of 'Karl':) not seeing His usual info about Company, if it was mentioned already in the past I apologize. Not easy to find perhaps, but should anyone wonder - here it is: http://www.scamadviser.com/check-website/digiarty.com

Have a nice weekend Everyone.

@ Litemotif: Please do NOT attempt to mess around with the PROPOSED new Microsoft OS unless you fully understand what you're doing; the fact that you're actually asking "have you used Win 10 long enough to have formed an opinion of it" has sent warning bells ringing loud and clear.

Microsoft has emphatically NOT just rolled out a beta version of Windows 10.

It has, instead, trailed an example of what Windows 10 *might* look like once the current work-in-progress has been taken several steps further.

Developers have already been notified by Microsoft that the current curtain-raiser omits many features scheduled to be in the beta. . . though as is often the case with Microsoft, the beta may wind up being anything but a 100% accurate representation of the final product -- "final" always being a laughably inappropriate word where Microsoft and its OS's are concerned.

All PC users are going to be curious about Microsoft's red-faced let's-erase-it-from-history flight from Windows 8 and its attempt at distancing itself from that mess by skipping a Windows 9, but only a very, very, very few users are going to be skilled enough to play around with this draft of a draft OS. Karl evidently knows what he's doing and good luck to him but I'd very much hope that his post is not taken up by non-techie PC users.

As to today's GOTD: a FREE Digiarty update that's clearly well worth downloading; those thumbs-down votes demonstrate only the meaningless of the thumbs-up / thumbs-down "vote" facility, not the actual calibre of the software promoted today.

Today's giveaway is one of the BEST DVD Ripper I ever used so far.

Excellent conversion speed and quality output, with the ability to turn off your PC after finishing the ripping process (great option if you need to rip a large number of files at night).

Can also be used to copy protected DVDs movies (main content or just some titles), in order to create backups for personal use, with the ability to extract the subtitles from them and/or convert DVD discs into ISO images.

3 THUMBS UP from me!

As a best FREE ALTERNATIVE I recommend this FREE GEM:

@bob: This button shows "about" the SW (Version and license-key). The SW is so easy to use and has only 3 buttons without label - 2 are anyway clear and for only this one: Press it - look and remember it for the future - not so hard. For using/ripping you don´t need this button. I think this SW needs NO tooltips...

Installed and registered without problems on a Win 10 Enterprise 64 bit system - the technical preview (*)
The registration key will be displayed on their site.

Version 7.5.4 was GiveAway on April 5th, 2014. Here are the old reviews:
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/winx-dvdripper-platinum/

A clear structured window opens, in the option you can select language, target folder and shutdown. That's all.

You load your DVD (or ISO or folder), select of course the "high quality engine" use as much kernels as you have and RUN.

In a short test this is done without problems.

If installed, update it. If not installed you can take this, if you don't have already a DVD ripper.

Uninstalled via reboot - don't want to add anything to my ripper collection. Oops... Wrong! I don't have installed a virtualization system on my fresh Win10 Enterprise WindowsToGo USB drive. Okay. I'll keep it ;-)

Have a nice weekend.

(*)
You can install it in your VM system or you install the REAL thing:

The easiest way to create a Win 10 (technical preview) system.

Download the installation file, either from microsoft (where you have to login with your Microsoft account)

or from the magazin Chip:
32 bit : http://www.chip.de/downloads/Windows-10-Technical-Preview-Beta-32-Bit_73018629.html
64 bit: http://www.chip.de/downloads/Windows-10-Technical-Preview-Beta-64-Bit_72189999.html

The installation key:
Product Key: NKJFK-GPHP7-GBC3J-P6JXR-HQRJR

Just push "Zum Download" in the next page "Download Server Chip Online". You receive always the English version ;-)

THEN:

Start the "AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro Edition 5.5", a GiveAway which you should have already installed.

Pre: Connect a fast USB Devive, which can be formatted, 16 GB - either stick or USB drive.

1) Mount the installation ISO
2) Start in the AOMEI program the "windows to go creator" assistant
3) point as installation file to the INSTALL.WIM of the mounted ISO
4) Start and wait some minutes ...

Boot the USB device and finish the installation. READY!
And now : BACKUP IMMEDIATELY THE FRESH INSTALLED SYSTEM with your favorite backup program.

To activate this program you are asked to visit this page...

http://www.winxdvd.com/giveaway/

Where you are given the required software key. There is no need to use an email address. I had version 7.54 from a previous giveaway. I chose to install this program into the same folder. The installation was smooth and easy as the program used all of my previous installation preferences. Upon starting the program a box appears where you can paste in the key to register the program.

This publisher is not new to users here. They have been a long time contributor. The programs they make work well and are generally well received. I say thank you to the GOTD team for all of your efforts and to the publisher, Digiarty Software, for you gift.

I've been using this since it was offered here on 5 January, 2013 and offered again on 4 April, 2014. I've had absolutely no problem ripping "backup" discs and I've tried it against other rippers such as DVDFab, WonderFox DVD Ripper and Aiseesoft DVD. It has very good performance and ability to rip most formats of DRM and has become my "go-to" DVD ripper.
