Hi
I have been experiencing a problem with installing the programme. Although initially I believed it may have been a problem related to my antivirus programme (F-Protect), which I have temporarily disabled, the problem still exists i.e. the installation stops about 1/10 of the way through (whilst installing the ...\Skins\Black Contrast\close_info_passive.png). I also tried the v6.1.5 version I downloaded from the website but, once again, the installation just 'hung up' part way through.
Please advise what is causing this problem and how to overcome it.
Incidentally, I successfully requested, and received, the license via email.
Thanks in advance
Kind regards
Mike

Mike,
We usually have this issue with Malwarebytes Antimalware or SUPERAntiSpyware . If you have one of these security tools, just try to stop it temporarily and try to install.

Getting the registration key was relatively quick and simple once I provided an acceptable e-mail adddress (more on that later). However, installation was not. The installer downloaded here at GAOTD bombed out. Tried it several times, no luck. Next I downloaded the software via the URL provided in the e-mail containing the registration key and tried that version. Success and it automatically picked up the registration key from the clipboard. I was annoyed with having to use yet another e-mail address to register the software. I have a dedicated Yahoo e-mail account dedicated to Give Away Of The Day and Game Give Away Of The Day software offerings. There was a message that the publisher cannot send e-mails via Yahoo. It's still a great piece of software and I have been using it for years. Thank you!

D J,
I'm sorry for issues with Yahoo. They have a very strange antispam mechanism, when some domain starts to send many messages to its clients it starts to temporarily defer these messages. Yahoo is a huge company and it's almost impossible for us to do something with it so we just avoid requesting the license to their mailboxes this time.

This app is really top of the pops. It's one of the giveaway offers I not only collect to probably use it once in the future, no it does it job on my computer every day. It is much better than the built-in windows feature. And no, I am not working for the developer or getting money for writing positive rewiews. Thanks to the developer and gaotd.

I've used a previous giveaway version for some time now. It adds something of a small extra step to your regular USB usage routine, but the time factor involved is trivial, and I've found the added value and extra security from this app to be well worth it. I probably pass on well over 90 % of the items that sail through this portal (and through that other well-known giveaway / promo site), but this is one I'm glad I said 'Yes' to.

If you do not receive your license in a timely manner the best way to continue is to contact them at

http://safelyremove.com/support.htm

I did that and got a response withing 20 minutes

The software seems to work well even showing the hidden items that can be disconnected if desired.

This is great. I got this previously. Over the years I've lost the contents of a few external drives because I impatiently disconnected them while they were running. With this, you don't have to reboot or wait. It will safely disengage them and you can then swap or disconnect the drive. The previous time this was offered here, I grabbed the offer to upgrade to the full Zentimo suite and I have been using it ever since. Definitely recommend everyone grab this while they can. Very useful.

I used the 6.1.2.1270 gievn here mid 2018 till now without any trouble. The new version installs without the need of a new licence code.

Reply   |   Comment by PaulF  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+11)

PaulF,

Yep, that worked OK -- mine is also "pre-registered" from a prior install -- thanks for the tip!

I would also caution today's users to check/change the Options > Notifications and UN-check the box for "Automatically check for updates" to prevent the license from accidentally reverting to a trial (as is usual practice for GOTD offers).

Additionally, I adjusted the "Properties" to allow for better display of text & icon size on my high-res display since, apparently, the software is not compiled with the code for this capability. (To do so, right-click on, say, the desktop shortcut icon for USB Safely Remove, choose Properties on the context menu, then select the Compatibility tab, then "Change high DPI settings", then "High DPI scaling override" check box for "Override high DPI scaling behavior", then choose/try either "System" or "System Enhanced", whichever works best.)

This is a great utility that belongs on every Windows machine. Thanks, Crystal Rich and GOTD!

Is there still any benefit in using this tool despite "Windows 10 1809, Microsoft drops safe removal of USB drives as the default option" / "Windows 10 now lets you pull out USB drives without ‘safely removing’ them" (just google for it)?

Reply   |   Comment by John Doe  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+22)

John Doe,
First of all it's not true, Microsoft has only stated they changed the default write policy to Quick Removal from Better Performance since Win 10 v.1809 and nothing more. It means the data put directly on the drive without caching, so you can just pull out your flash drive after you write data on it. But there's no guarantee you were pulled the device out while a background program is writing an information to it. Using safe removal with our program will help you avoid such a scenario.

Also Quick Removal policy may seriously degrade performance of writing in case of many small files even on USB 3.0. So you may want to change this policy to Better Performance, and in this case Microsoft warns that you must use safe removal.

Next there are external hard drives that are more complex devices that include more controlling chips (comparing to flash drive), have moving mechanical parts and no one knows what happens to the drive if you constantly pull it out. It is similar to shutting down the computer by pulling out the cable from the socket or disconnecting the battery from the laptop. Therefore even manufacturers of hard drives (e.g. Seagate) recommend to disconnect external hard drives using Safely Remove Hardware icon.

Finally USB Safely Remove offers significant benefits for active use of external devices even you don't need Safely Remove Hardware. Thanks to its convenient and feature-wise menu the program lets you navigate better in the devices when there several ones on the list, can manage drive letters, hide empty drives of card readers, can run programs on device connection\disconnection and many more.

Igor,

In other words: you don't recommend to ever just remove an USB device without first safely removing this device (even if Windows setting was switched to quick removal), either via Windows' own removal function or even better with your tool's function?
And even if the user has only read data from the USB device?

Reply   |   Comment by John Doe  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

John Doe,
I just attempted to answer your question in my first reply and I didn't give any recommendations since I'm a biased seller of the tool.

If you need my own short opinion: If you use the jump drives only for reading there's no sense to use safe removal, otherwise you should think of using it considering what I wrote above.

[ John Doe ],

The user thinking that they are only reading means nothing to the operating system and background programs.

I find this really useful as I do a lot of swapping USB drives and memory cards around, and if you do something similar I would recommend it. (I find it especially useful with my dual card reader, which the Windows utility often screwed up.)

Note the previous Giveaway was version 6.1.2 and its licence said it was good for all 6.1 versions, so presumably will work for this as-is and you don't need to re-licence it. (Update) Which has proved to be the case.

Here's their list of differences to the standard Windows utility:
https://safelyremove.com/usbsafelyremove-vs-windows.htm
A couple are a bit of a reach (skinnable, for example) but there a number of really useful features IMHO.

Rather annoyingly I can't find a history-of-changes to see what is different here.

BTW the Download page on their Website says the latest version is 6.1.5 and that's what you get when you download it. The installer launched by the GAotD wrapper says the software is dated 18th August and the installed version is 6.1.7 - I might have preferred one that has been out in the wild for a while and any issues discovered, so I hope any changes are minor, but as I said above I can't tell.
Rather annoyingly I can't find a history-of-changes to see what is different here.

I've used it since March 2015 (version 5.3.8) and continue to be very happy with it.

Sorry for the extra "Rather annoyingly..." I wondered where the extra paste had gone after I caught the mouse button set to do that.

I see from below if you fill in the form to get a licence you get a link direct to an installer, although it is named for GAotD and so might be different from the standard program (assuming 6.1.7 will show up on their download page soon) in some way?

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-4)

JohnL,
Thanks for you nice review of the program!

As for the changes since 6.1.5. There are only insignificant bug-fix so we didn't include them in change list, but here they are:
* Improved viewability of the icon in the system tray when it's gray (no devices connected)
* The setup file is now unicode which means you can install e.g. in Arabic language on the system that default locale is English
* In some cases the native safe removal icon didn't hide

Igor, I'm a big fan of it, many thanks for all your effort.

Oh and is there anything unusual about the "usbsafelyremovesetup_6-1-7_gtde.exe" installer you get from the link when you apply for a licence? Why does it have the "gtde" part of the name?

Reply   |   Comment by JohnL  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

JohnL,
6.1.7 versions from GOTD and from the giveaway page are the same exe. While 6.1.5 on the download page of the program ( https://safelyremove.com/download.htm ) is an old release the changes I described above. As for the installer name we just have a different version number for giveaways to easily distinguish free users from paid ones so we just named it differently.

P.S. It seems GOTD cuts comments in some way so my previous reply was clipped.

Reply   |   Comment by Igor  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Igor, No problem. Although presumably the free licence should work for any 6.1.8 version that comes along so people shouldn't be concerned about the newness of 6.1.7?

Again, really a big fan, just wanted to clarify what was in the software and if it differed from the retail version, thanks for replying and good luck!

* The license is valid only for v. 6.1
* You can use this version for lifetime
* No technical support, but you can always refer to the manual:
https://safelyremove.com/help/ .

You get a link to version 6.1.7.

Reply   |   Comment by onderzoeker  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

onderzoeker, Interesting. I used the GAotD installer as I had the previous GiveAway and its licence also said it was valid for all 6.1 versions, so didn't need to apply for a licence. However as you say if you fill in the form you get a link to directly download the installer. However it does say it's a GAotD version so perhaps it's different in some way from the "normal" one? I would really like to know how and won't update my Notebook for now.
