Is there some secret place to do it?

I have a collection of the best eBook converters on the market, including this one. However, I only use one preferred program (not Ultimate eBook Converter), but I keep them all installed, waiting for updates to come along.

The problem with ALL eBook converters is that they cannot convert large digital books with a lot of graphics, to PDFs. I have a "tester" eBook that is 48MB in size. Today's giveaway failed to convert it to a PDF. I wasn't surprised.

If you have a large digital book that you want converted to a PDF, go to this website:
https://ebook.online-convert.com/convert-to-pdf
It's free to use.

To [ CJ Cotter ], who shared an alternative for converting to PDF ...

I want the other way round - no one makes an intelligent heuristic PDF-to-epub/doc, especially through OCR.

More importantly, Epubor's Ultimate eBook Converter's claim to fame is DRM removal, so I don't expect intelligent heuristic conversion in anything but a full fledged editor, such as Adobe Acrobat writer, and even then I have a great deal of editing to do.

Thanks for the alternative, though, that's always a useful benefit of feedback on GOTD.

It works well, but not very intuitive. Still, it's nice to have a permanent copy of your books.

I tried this program a couple of years with a giveaway and then decided to purchase a lifetime license. I've used it without a problem, although in one situation I had to install a slightly older version of Kindle. Full instructions are on the web site. One thing I particularly appreciated are free upgrades. One thing not so great is the lack of response from Customer Service when a ticket is opened; however, there is good contact via a live chat or something similar although the "live" chat seems more like leave a message and you'll get a response when the timezone permits.

I cannot get it to find Kindle books on my PC. I think Amazon changed the way books are stored on your PC to stop programs like this from accessing them. Is this true? This converter seems to be referring to old version of Kindle program with different menus.

Reply   |   Comment by Tom  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

To [ Tom ], who can't get Epubor Ultimate Ebook Converter to find Kindle ebooks on their PC ...

[ 1 ] IF we copy Kindle ebooks from a stand-alone Kindle over to our PC, THEN we just need to direct Epubor Ultimate Ebook Converter
to browse to wherever we copied them to, AND we must also input our Kindle serial number for Epubor Ultimate Ebook Converter to refer to during it's DRM removal.

[ 2 ] IF we are using Kindle for PC, THEN we must READ the ebook on screen before offering it to Epubor Ultimate Ebook Converter, because unread books have not been downloaded and are therefore not findable yet, but after we start to read them, they will appear in
[ C:\Users\{our-login-name}\Documents\My Kindle Content\ ]
which Epubor Ultimate Ebook Converter presumes as default, and or we can direct it to browse there.

Let us know how it goes.

Downloaded, installed & registered easily enough. The first ebook I attempted to convert to pdf format gave this error "Please delete the books and redownload them again [sic]. Run Epubor software to remove the Kindle kfx DRM. If you are failed again, please follow the guide to fix your problem."

So basically it didn't run out of the box as advertised and GAOTD subscribers are doing Epubor's qa testing. Uninstalled.

Reply   |   Comment by StudioJoe  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

To [ StudioJoe ], who balked at re-downloading KFX ebooks to their PC/Mac as AZ3 ebooks in order to bypass DRM and export / convert our Amazon ebooks ...

Amazon likes playing with their latest KFX file formats, it's their proprietary non-standard, they change it on a whim, so avoid it.

Epubor provides copious instructions and resources showing us how to accomplish the task of bypassing KFX.

Once we initiate the work-around, everything goes smashingly smoothly, untethering us from Amazon's clutches.

Reinstall Epubor Ultimate Ebook Converter AND install Amazon Kindle for PC/Mac v1.24/v1.23 ( which Epubor re-provides from Amazon archives over at [ https :// www. epubor. com/how-to-downgrade-kindle-for-pcmac. html ], and THEN set Kindle for PC/Mac to NOT to update, and THEN re-download our ebooks, and we're good to go.

Allowing Amazon to auto-update our Kindle for PC is like letting Microsoft auto-update our Windows - it's our computer, not theirs, so take back control.

- - - - -

Note, with random changes in DRM, static DRM-bypassing algorithms probably will fail on Kindle for PC/Mac version 1.25 or newer or with Kindle firmware 5.10.2 or newer ... so don't update, and or only try to bypass DRM on a PC/Mac AFTER installing earlier version of Kindle for PC/Mac, and AFTER re-downloading our ebooks, which will then arrive as the stable original AZ3 format.

It took me a few years of iterative exploration to figure this all out to my own criteria ( it should not be so hard ), and in the process, I figured out how to get ebooks free from local libraries - there's no problem so big it can't be run from.

Let us know what works for you.

Thanks for exploring this and sharing on GOTD - everyone here makes GOTD a great place for vendors and end-users alike to learn and do better.

To [ casperimproved ], who faults Epubor for not removing DRM from current Amazon KFX files ...

Amazon likes playing with their latest KFX file formats, it's their proprietary non-standard, they change it on a whim, so avoid it.

Keeping our Amazon Kindle for PC/Mac at v1.24/v1.23 ( which Epubor re-provides from Amazon archives over at [ https :// www. epubor. com/how-to-downgrade-kindle-for-pcmac. html ], forces Amazon ebooks to arrive in the earlier stable AZ3 format, where bypassing DRM is predictable and effective.

Allowing Amazon to auto-update our Kindle for PC is like letting Microsoft auto-update our Windows - it's our computer, not theirs, so take back control.

Blame Amazon, not Epubor.

So I went into the settings and clicked on the "Upgrade to v3.0.12.707 and I still get that message. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to go backwards with programs that work. Thanks, though.

Nope, the prior versions work just fine FOR US, the later versions do tricky stuff in the background for AMAZON, not FOR US.

So far, this works very well: quick and accurate. I have only converted from *.epub to *.pdf using IceCreamReader and SumatraPDF to look for differences. The main difference has been in line spacing which surpricingly is improved in the PDF conversion.

Keep in mind that this is a very small sample set and any differences may be due to the readers I used

Reply   |   Comment by maddog7  –  3 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

To [ maddog7 ], who is exploring the presentation layout results of different ebook converters ...

Line spacing SHOULD be the job of an ebook reader at the time we are reading.

Ebooks themselves of any type SHOULD be raw text with zero layout formatting, only labels like headings, bold, italics, and such, then allowing each person reading the ebook to control the reflow and shape and size of the presentation text and page layout, live at the time of reading.

I use free Calibre Ebook editor to strip ebooks of all layout formatting.

Epubor does not offer ebook editing, so their conversion will give us whatever the Epubor programmers presume is worthy of keeping and or constructing, and we may be seeing Epubor decisions, or we may be seeing the decisions of the programmers who laid out the original ebook presentation formatting - there's no way to know which.

Yes, we may end up liking one converter over another because of the results, but that's just whimsical, hence, that's why I take control and strip whimsical formatting from within my ebooks first, then I convert them, then I control the presentation in realtime at my ereaders as I read, live.

I'm not certain this software is worth the bother. I converted quite a number of Kindle ebooks in 2019 with an earlier version. The majority wouldn't load into my Sony Reader for pc software. Once i discovered that, I gave up and removed the software.

I recall going through quite a rigamarole to even download the books from Amazon to my laptop. It seemed to take forever to go through all the steps required to do even that to get the job done. Also, I see we need to step down versions on the Kindle app.

Now that I think about it, I'm not going to even bother.

Of course, as always, your mileage may vary.

To [ Peter ], who recoiled at the many steps needed to remove DRM and convert lots of older files ...

Yes, it's arduous to take over control of an existing library, BUT ...

... we only need to do it ONCE, then, from then on, our library will be properly situated for easy DRM removal and ebook file format conversion without hassle anymore.

The biggest hurdle may be the change over, but what's the alternative for DRM removal and file format conversion - what do you use instead?

Like telling Microsoft NO, do not update my Windows 7 to Windows 10, I see no advantage and I see disadvantage in letting Amazon update my Kindle software.

Who's computer is it anyway?

So, tell us, what's so special that you notice between Kindle for PC/Mac v1.28 versus earlier v1.23/v1.24?

David, I think you only get to read what you have already decrypted, but whether or not you can do it on this product is another story. I can't find any evidence of a "free" version that this might revert to on the Epubor website or in the FAQ. If I were you, I'd just get the lifetime license. They have a license retrieval link on their website so if you lose it for any reason, you can get it back.

David,

According to the details above (the blue panel on the right), the giveaway will give "1 year license with free updates and support". This usually means that the giveaway will work as a full programme for one year, and when the year is up you will still be able to use it, but you will not get free updates or free help if something goes wrong. You'll have a whole year to work with it and decide whether or not it will be worth your while to buy the full programme, which will update as necessary, and will give free help if needed.

If that sounds like a good trial offer, then jump in and try it out. That's what Giveaway of the Day is all about, after all. And then you can come back in here and tell others what you liked or disliked about the programme.

To [ David ] who wrote "... What happens at the end of they year? Can it still be used? ..."

Epubor Ultimate eBook Converter 3.0.12 will no longer remove DRM locks, just purchase a copy to keep removing DRM-locks form Amazon ebooks.

Ultimate eBook Converter 3.0.12 will continue to convert non-DRM-locked ebooks ... which alternative free Calibre Ebook will do anyway, and there are other free alternatives for simple conversion of non-DRM-locked ebooks.

Note, Epubor Ultimate eBook Converter DEPENDS on knowing our Amazon Kindle serial number, and cannot convert DRM-locked ebooks found or collected from just anywhere, so if we inherit a computer containing Kindle backup but the Kindle itself is gone ( given away, dead, cracked, broken, and thrown out since the repairs or replacement batteries are more expensive than just replacing the Kindle itself, and so we have no way of knowing the original serial number that downloaded the DRM-locked ebooks ), then we cannot convert those DRM-locked ebooks.

However, if we have access to the original Amazon account, we can re-download DRM-locked ebooks to our own Kindle for PC program, and then remove DRM from the newly downloaded copies that came from the same account.

Note also that finding and keeping an original Kindle for PC program that does NOT use KFX format forces Amazon to download older simpler-to-remove DRM format - I have also found that Epubor Ultimate eBook Converter does not need a serial number for a Kindle for PC residing on the same computer ( there is no serial number for Kindle for PC ... and I have not tried removing DRM from Amazon ebooks from another computer's Kindle for PC, so I have more to learn here ).

There are a variety of alternatives, some free, some arduous,

I have found Epubor Ultimate eBook Converter to be stable and well-supported, and they recommend workarounds when Amazon puts up roadblocks, so give Epubor a try and let us know how you make it work for you.

- - - - - - - - - -

DRM wise, imagine buying a book that no one else can read, that you yourself cannot read after closing it, if you move to another room, another home, a book that you cannot give away or donate.

Publishers fear that more digital copies means there will be fewer original digital sales and profit for them, yet the opposite is true, the more digital copies there are, the more that people are only reading the publisher's content, not reading their competition, and those people are spreading the word to others, making that publisher's content popular, where others then clamor to purchase original copies for themselves - some publishers don't even distribute to some places, so what's the point of complaining if people in those places get addicted to that publisher's content by any means, the publisher was not going to make a sale anyway ... commercial greed "mine mine mine" has a way of messing up access to intellectual property.

DRM = Don't Read Me.

Epubor Ultimate eBook Converter = yeah, go ahead, you can read this.

Thank you Epubor and GOTD for letting us explore this program and give feedback here.

What are others finding?

David, I imagine it stops working like many other giveaways do but hey you never know. So why worrying about a year later when we do not know if we will be alive tomorrow. Right? Use it and I am sure you can always purchase it at some discount by year's end if you like it.

David,

Not sure, but it probably is still useful just no updates or support.

There are a ton of free online converters so I don't see a need for this paid program taking up space on a hard drive, unless for some reason you can't get online. Matter of fact I used one the other day to convert one from pdf to epub.
