I've been looking for a converter to convert mkv files to avi, so was quite pleased to see that this program did that.......unfortunately it doesn't work. Just crashes or only converts audio only. Uninstalled.

Bolly,
"I've been looking for a converter to convert mkv files to avi..."
Unfortunately it's not all that simple... MKV & AVI are different containers -- they hold the actual audio & video, and provide a framework that different software can understand to play that content. What matters most is what format that audio & video is in while it's inside of those containers.
"... unfortunately it doesn't work. Just crashes or only converts audio only."
You could try different converters obviously, but as most converters are pretty good nowadays, you *might* have to use something like MediaInfo to find out what's different about the video that you have in the MKV file(s), &/or find out if it's broken somehow. You might want to head over to videohelp[.]com, get MediaInfo, find out what video you have, then check their forums &/or guides to see if there's something special to use, &/or what tools work with what you've got, &/or how to check if it's broken.

Bolly, try also checking the file size. Due to the internals of an AVI file, (an index stored at the tail-end) this container type has a maximum-size limitation of slightly under 2 gigabytes. Unfortunately, very few video manipulation programs catch oversize videos before this hard limitation, that is specific to only the AVI container, ruins the result.
