StarBurn is a powerful tool for grabbing, burning and mastering CD, DVD, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD media. StarBurn supports all types of optical storage media (including CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, Dual layer DVD-R & DVD+R, BD-R/RE, HD-DVD-R/RW and DVD-RAM) as well as a wide variety of burning hardware.

StarBurn is easy to learn and to use. In addition to advanced DVD authoring and mastering features StarBurn offers a number of step-by-step wizards for novice users.

New features of StarBurn v.10

  • StarBurn now has portable edition unified with the base installation.
  • Wizards complete C++ source code included. StarBurn now is open source application!
  • Skin manager bug (no skins under x64 Vista/Longhorn Windows) fixed.
  • Broken non-English volume label names bug fixed.
  • Can work now w/o Administrator rights (except StarPort-based wizards) under Vista/Longhorn.
  • SAO & DAO methods now correctly report they cannot do "test" burn.
  • DVD+R DL (Double Layer) now correctly sets layer break border.
  • Probing for supported read modes now does not probe DVD and Blu-Ray for raw reads they cannot do.
  • PIONEER 116 and 216 (PATA & SATA models) workaround added.
  • Now we can do true session and disc finalization for BD-R media (don't always leave disc opened).
  • BD-RE and DVD+RW erase sequence changed. Now we do completely erase UDF header.
  • TOC reading has workaround for broken AnyDVD software (with protected Blu-Ray movie disc inserted).
  • TOC sequence changed to report correct track ends for DVD and Blu-Ray disc (w/o link blocks).

Main differences between GAOTD version and freeware version of Starburn:

  • Network burning unlocked (RDS standard version has network burning expiring after 30 days of the evaluation). Now Mac Aero network burning functionality is available to the PC/Windows user as well;
  • DVD decrypter (missing from RDS standard builds);
  • Blu-Ray decrypter (missing from RDS standard builds).

Complete list of features

System Requirements:

Windows 2000 SP4 (Windows XP SP2 and up recommended); 800 MHz Intel Pentium III class processor; 512 MB of RAM; 30 MB of disc space for StarBurn application data; CD/DVD drive (Blu-Ray or HD-DVD burner recommended)

Starburn was lost on a reinstall and I was so glad to see it offered again. This is a killer app I would gladly dump Nero for.

Works fine so far.

Someone mentioned about the homepage hijack. That is true, even if you uncheck when it asks if you want to change the page. It is, however, a simple task of changing back to your previous homepage.

System Info: AMD 64 Dual Processor 6000 with 4 GB RAM, Radeon 512 MB, with 2 DVD-RW (1 DL, 1 SL). Running Vista Ultimate 64,

This program is the slowest thing I have EVER seen. Everytime I try to create or burn an ISO file it has to go through the process of trying to locate the burn drives. It never saves the systems configuration to the settings. It can take up to 10 minutes just to get ready to perform a function. Yeah, this was free, but you get what you pay for. This software is not worth paying for if you are running a 64-bit system. Usually my system is super fast, but Starburn makes it act like a 486 running Win 3.11! I think I will go back to Nero, at least that one is reliable! I was using a trial version of DVDFab and it performed flawlessly when creating ISO files. Between DVDFab and Nero, I pretty much have everything covered and they don't slow down my system!

THUMBS WAY DOWN!

I installed on my Visa Home computer, but it hangs up on searching for my CD/DVD drive. Vista can't even kill it when that happens and I have to reboot.I thought that was a thing of the past with Vista!

This software IS Expensive at 495$ Yes! but look at the good MAC Software it's no different. It's all in what you want to do... if you want to Archive most "ANY" CD/DVD Then this is the software for You!, if not then it's not worth the 495$ Commercial liscense. BESIDES..., this StarBurn v10 (SDK RDS Liscense) is FREE on their website, Yes "FREE" ! -=8^)

I have seen alot of posts about it changing your homepage, while installing it it had an obvious box you can uncheck and it won't change anything. It's that simple, just don't go gangbusters clicking "Next" all the time.

Danger!?
Yeah it downloaded and installed just fine, but when I did the recommmended restart, it wouldn't come back up. I had to manually (push the button) shut down and restart. Then after an overnight sleep, the computer wouldn't start up again. Did the manual thing agin. So I uninstalled Starburn and now it restarts like normal. I can't think of any other culprit.

I do not understand how so many can think this is a good program. Yes it will make CDs of different kinds. Many programs will do that. The help line is worthless, the same mistakes are in all the giveways of starburn on this site. The program ass-u-me-s much more than it should. All items to be put to CD needs to be formatted and edited bafore it is burned to CD. Most any burning program then can burn a CD.
It works but that is not saying very much

there are many different kinds of files in dvds. some programs use the vob files, others use the ifo files. the advantage of ifo files is that it'll read all the vob files for you and do all the combining so you won't end up with 15 different clips for garfield: the movie. The bad thing is that many programs can only read the vob files since the vob files are the actual video clips inside. if you wound up with an iso file somehow, that's a disk image. that's basically the exact disk copied into one file. if one will download a disk image mounter, they can see the files inside are exactly the same as the original disk. so far i haven't seen a single dvd converter that could actually convert from an iso. also, some tricky dvds like my garfield the movie dvd hide those dumb vobs and ifos in a subfolder and i tested this with 15 different dvd converters. the deal is if you don't select the subfolder instead of the actual dvd, the dvd converter will notbe able to recognize the fact that it's a dvd.

For those interested search your temp folders for a file called Starburn_setup.exe and you can probably use that to reinstall it if you ever reformat. It did Setup the software on my pc just fine. The Giveaway of the Day installer crashed on me for some odd reason. If you can't find it run the Giveaway of the Day installer and grab the file before th setup program erases it. Or you can Just use the windows search feature to search for the file on yours operating system drive.

I have the previous versions of Starburn from here and all have worked fine...In fact I' pretty glad it is repeated as I change my PC pretty often.
It installed perfectly this time onto my XP- SP3 machine.

I actually prefer this to Nero and not bothered over the $400+ price tag...NOT today it is'nt!
I agree with #27 too, I've had a few bad discs in the past that DVD Shrink cannot read, Then tried DVD Decryptor with the same result!

Why exactly Starburn reads these discs fully I don't know,Again I don't really care,All I know is it succeeds where other programs fail and that's what really counts surely?

It might not do the same thing as DVD Shrink but then again DVD Shrink does'nt copy CD's or compress music files does it?

This is a nice program that does a few tasks VERY well rather than just one task very well, Surely worth getting for free for today!
Inbetween thedays it's not been on the GOTD site, I've got the free version until it's appeared here again so I appreciate the GOTD teams time and trouble.

I don't like a lot of software on this site and when such programs appear, I simply wait until something does rather than moan over not liking it.

For today anyway a big thank-you to GOTD team and of course Starburn :-)

You can un-click that option when you install the software...
This is kind of thing is practically done with most every software (especially freeware) nowadays.

To the posters who are experiencing problems with installing today's software after having re-moved a previous version.
There is a reason why you are having this issue that you are not going to get around, un-fortunately. At least with the shareware version.
Since I am also a Vendor I would be very much out of line if I gave further details. You would do better to move on to another freeware product if you are seeking a burner.

It does seem that this program has had a habit of disappearing from people's computers (from the posts I have read here) at some point after downloading, and that is enough to make me pass on the download. The 495$ Version... because it's the Network version... you'll say that it's a feature you don't need but in my home backing up the other computers remote without having to go to each station is a added feature... and heck right now the program is FREE... so.. unless you don't want the offer don't download it... save bandwidth... but it's a nice program... doesn't really matter the price... there are softwares out there like 3d studio that will ruin a budjet but for those who need simple 3d functions theres blender... so to get to the point... Price value is only a question of how bad you need something...

I was completely pissed off when I installed this program the first time - many months ago. The homepage & lousy uninstall things are hokey.

The 'Rocket Division' people should be ashamed of themselves for not fixing the problems with this software...Terrible. They do not care about their customers - Free or not, awful way to conduct business.

This is NOT the full version. I have installed it in two systems, and neither got the "star port driver" installed. Without this feature, no network burning is allowed. In short: this is the freeware version readily available in their website.

Is there a plan to publish the correct copy before the day is over?

#78: You are absolutely right. They keep on saying "mastering" and "authoring" but I don't see any option to create the contents of DVD, that is, Star Burn burns DVD off of pre-existing/pre-created VIDEO_TS folder, but does not create its own VIDEO_TS.

It would be really great if GOTD would provide a software that allows DVD authoring/mastering, so that we can create DVD out of the MPEGs that we have from our home videos, kinda what Roxio Easy Media Creator does. That gives me an idea why not get Roxio Easy Media Creator as a GOTD.

Thanks GOTD and Starburn anyway.

For commenter #111:
Saw this in a review:

"Crucially, it [Starburn] allows for an integrated solution that lets you rip a disc to create a .iso image file, and subsequently mount the .iso image using StarPort device, freeing your physical disc drive for other task."

Heres a list of 3 freeware alternatives. all 3 are better, all the time free, don't try & hijack your homepage or search provider & all three have legit, good user reviews everywhere you look including download.com. They also do both CD's & DVD's. To the best of my knowledge, all will let you add folders to any compilation.

1) BurnAware Free - http://www.burnaware.com/burnaware_free.html

2) ImgBurn Free - http://www.imgburn.com/

3) DeepBurner Free - http://www.deepburner.com/?r=download

All 3 are better then this give away & none use shady install tactics. "Rocket Division Software" needs to do a self analysis of what their trying to do with these shady install tactics.

You can try to reinstall StarBurn and don't uncheck box "Install StarPort DVD-ROM Emulator".

Or you can install StarPort driver form the StarBurn installed folder:
Simply run
"..\Rocket Division Software\StarBurn\StarPort\StarPortLite.10.exe"

This ISO file you can burn on other blank DVD disc with using "Burn Image" wizard.

Or you can mount this ISO image with using StarPort wizard "Create DVD" (this wizard can be started form StarPort section in side bar menu).
After this you can see ISO image content form the windows explorer like optical DVD drive.
