it doesn't work on Windows 7 64bit. You install it - launch program - Screen Capturing 3.0 has stopped working, before you even get to enter any key.

Lee Douglas, you probably had it before from a previous giveaway.

https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/screen-capturing/

same version so registration probably survived uninstallation but it is likely it was still installed and you just re-installed over the top the same version and continued to use the existing data.

DL, installed & registered without problem. As with many GOTD offerings, Avast/AVG-type anti-virus must be suspended but MalwareBytes & anti-root kits do not.

No positives on VirusTotal.

Recording video was problem-free. The resolution was surprisingly good, just about matching the quality of the Youtube sources.

But audio was a no-go. Multiple attempts to record audio failed. There is an audio dialog box on the screen under Settings which supposedly allows audio to be toggled on & off. There are two options for audio input - microphone & virtual-audio-capturer. A "line" option must then be selected. The choice for mic is “Master Volume” only and for virtual-audio-capturer it's blank.

The program will not proceed unless a line option is selected displaying the message "Please select Audio line." Since there's no possible selection, in order to record video the audio box must be deselected. This apparent defect severely limits the usefulness of this program.

BTW this program and exact same version is listed on their site as:

"Old and deprecated software.

[red]Use it on your own risk! No updates, fixes or support is provided[/red]

Screen Video Capturing – Record video from a screen in AVI or WMV formats with sound.
Windows XP/Vista/7; 32/64-bit compatible.

Direct download (EXE, 1MB) "

On page: https://bytescout.com/download/download_freeware.html

I have already found significant bugs in it so yes USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK! It is not modern software at all and definately was never designed for Vista and above!

For those having trouble with the Themidia wrapped installer today and do not want to remove their anti-malware protection just to install a giveaway you can get the same installer unwrapped at:

https://cdn.bytescout.com/ScreenCapturing.exe
or
http://cdn.bytescout.com/ScreenCapturing.exe

Compatibility in the installer says it requires XP or later with .NET 2.0 or higher so is unlikely to be using anything advanced like WASAPI so will be bound to the limitations of the hardware and drivers installed for the sound subsystem.

That version accepts the registration information provided in the readme.txt in the giveaway bundle zip so you will need that. I get an exception reported whenever I try to press the gear settings button so cannot see what it offers in the way of settings which does not bode well for the SDK installer they bundle with all their "products" which are really just proof of concept demos for their byteScout SDK which is their real product! The exception data follows:

TK, thanks for the time and research and then the detailed write up but the reason you may get some negative comments is because it may be a bit of over-kill. As the saying goes "less is more".

Reply   |   Comment by 2cents  –  Last year  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

2cents, I don't let the votes concern me some negative vote a comment if it makes them have to scroll the screen too much! It's not a popularity contest it's comments about the application and the developer and the genre that's the point, if bytescoute want to make an actual product they may be able to use the information... if not people have been warned that the program today is unstable, undeveloped despite being at version 3 and now abandoned by the developers, program crashed on trying to do any capture too but without any user accessible report.
I view less is less when beta testing for the benefit of other giveawayoftheday.com users.

TK, I always like to read your comments, and yes I scrolled all the way from the top to the bottom all by myself ... Anyway, I haven't downloaded or done any research on today's offering but as far as I can see the only reason for this seemingly useless software existing is bytescout's greed and thinking we are all morons and will rush to buy it. DUH!

Reply   |   Comment by Robert  –  Last year  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

Robert, What they want is to publicise their SDK product since its licensing fees are what they are banking on (they are enormous) but since there is no shortage of free opensource SDK's and libraries to performm most complex activities they've had to resort trying to monetise the SDK demo programs and get paid for cooperating with giveawayoftheday.com in the various giveaways that they have offered their comercialised demo programs. This product is unsuable for me and many others. I am not going to pollute my Win10 systems with this it is far too primitive and buggy and is basically depretiated software.

I have version 3.0.0.61 from a another offer. Since this offer is advertised as version 3.0, which is how the 3.0.0.61 version was advertised, this one may be the exact same, or possibly a larger minor version number. If it is the same, there is no need to install this offer. Could someone that has installed it see what version is displayed when the console is open, or check the "About" screen, or check the Properties of the executable and see if it shows a specific version number? I cannot find a single thing on the Bytescout website that informs users what version this is.

[ Gary ],

1 - You can always start a GOTD offer and see if it says the version before completing, then exit if you prefer not to continue.

2 - Yes, this is v3.0.0.61, same as on the web page, pro ( licensed ) version or free version.

Gary, simple question does the sound capture use DirectSound or WASAPI i.e. does it only capture sound from the systems discrete input pins or can it capture the systems sound output without a corresponding Input device showing up in Recording Devices GUI even if show hidden devices or show disabled devices is enabled in the context menu on the recording devices window?

Reply   |   Comment by TK  –  Last year  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Terry I, from my experience today the simple answer is no it is not, it's obsolete and buggy .NET 2.0 abandonware.

Hadrianus, AVI is container format... It has nothing to do with old or not old. You can use the most modern codecs in it.

Reply   |   Comment by Sarastro  –  Last year  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

Hadrianus, I wouldn't worry about it someone else will continue support for it or you can use 3rd party codecs. If it's true they just want to avoid software patent license fees. The problem would be if they BLOCKED all HEVC/H.265 codecs from operating in WIndows 10, which they always could do but if they did, they'd alientate hundreds of millions of Windows 10 users around the world. And 3rd parties would devise and publish methods to prevent future cripplewared feature updates and a software war would ensue between Microsoft and its Windows 10 users.

Hadrianus,

they sell it now for a nominal license fee. As I thought they would.

Hadrianus, errr why are you talking about H265 in this giveaways comments? This program does not support H265! you seem to be going off on some strange tangent again.

Peter Blaise,

Thanks for replying and apologies after asking a question, then found out I had to go cover an emergency situation, so just now getting back to the forum.

>You can always start a GOTD offer and see if it says the version before completing,
Yes, for some installs. The last time I installed, I captured each setup screen displayed, but the version number does not show up until the program actually starts. I always review the screen captures of past installs before installing a program again. That is why I asked if anyone else knew what version it was.

For me, the version 3.0.0.61 crashed as soon as it started, so I never got to see what it could do. I was hoping it had been improved to get past the initial problem. The result is that Windows itself reports:
ByteScout Screen capture has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will stop the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Again, thanks Peter, and apologies too.

TK,

My apologies for such a late response; after asking I found out I had to step out all day, and just now getting back to the forum.

> simple question does the sound capture use DirectSound or WASAPI i.e. does it only capture sound from the systems discrete input pins or can it capture the systems sound output without a corresponding Input device showing up in Recording Devices GUI even if show hidden devices or show disabled devices is enabled in the context menu on the recording devices window?

Even worst is my reply; "I didn't get that far."

Since it stopped working as soon as I started to attempt to record, I never went back to the settings. Checking setting briefly right now, I see that audio can be checked or not. If checked, I get a choice for Device and Line. My Device choices are Microphone (Realtek High definition), virtual-audio-capturer, and Line (SupremeFX Hi-Fi (FS)). For Line, if I select Microphone or Line, I get a choice of Master Volume (otherwise empty).

The program could have been not much more than a demo of their Screen Capture SDK. It might have been a decent screen capture program if it has only worked. Thankfully, I have several others.

Again, apologies for such a late response.

Terry I,

>So question is, Is it any good??
Unfortunately, no ... at least for me. It failed as soon as it started on a Win 7 Pro x64 system; Windows reported the program has stopped working correctly; that is why I was hoping this was a fix of that bug. Someone else mentioned that it worked on Windows 10, and another mentioned it failed on Win7, so for some it might not work so well.

It doesn't seem all that long ago that having a program that could record anything on the screen was a valuable commodity to have in your toolbox, but these days, there are so many that do the very basics. Several have been given away here on GOTD. Even video converters and downloaders are starting to add a mode to record the screen. I started making a list of how many I had that could record the screen, and was surprised I had more than 2 or 3. I had around 18, and since that time, have added several more, plus some that I have not had the time to install. In other words, if this one didn't work for you, no big worry because there will be another one soon.

Most all record with the same quality (after all, it is recording the screen, so it sees what is sent to the video card). As long as the playback is on the same screen, you are not likely to notice much difference between the playback version and the source. Don't expect 4k from a 1920 resolution display.

Sorry, I was gone all day and could not answer your question sooner.

Hadrianus, You seem to be using these giveawayoftheday.com specific comments as if it was a generic forum to try and force discussions about whatever you want to talk about, please try to stick to discussing the current giveaway or equivilent programs. Microsoft have NOT stopped supporting HEVC for Windows 10 but stripped it out of the default installation to remove liability for the patent license fees for chargable per installation of the codec whether or not the user ever uses or needs it. it is in the Windows store. Even if Microsoft really had ceased supporting it as you seemed to fear that is not a topic for discussion here but for discussion in a Windows 10 or HEVC specific forum thread on a different website!
This is the reason almost all of your comments are marked as not useful in these giveaway specific comments sections. I am no longer going to discuss or respond to your off topic postings here even if you direct them to me specifically as they are innappropriate for this site and should not make it past the moderator in the first place!

Hadrianus,
Unix is a operating system that was developed in the late sixties. It is still very usefull in business environments and parts of the initial code are even used in Linux.
I repeat, it's not because it's from the ninetees, that it's obsolete. That is a very simplistic vision you have.
In fact, a lot of new technology is initially developed ages ago...
It's your right to disagree to that, but in my humble opinion of ict-professional (with more than 35 years experience), you're wrong.
