Makes Chrome and IE8 crash when installed. Extra components installed. Tried downloading from a page, and for some time it showed that it was downloading 3 swf files, but these files are not in the download folder. There is a 'processing now' folder including a bunch of zero sized temp files. I run Windows XP on a MacBook. Crash report is way too long to be pasted here.

AVG reports this as a virus and removes it from the system. I would like to find a way to make this work, but until it does there is only a very negative experience. What should I do?

I really don't get it. This was in the product description on GOTD, no doubt provided by the software provider:

"Convert the downloaded video and transfer it to your mobile devices."

It was because of that very line that I downloaded the damn thing in the first place. If I wanted something to just rip the videos from whatever site in FLV format, I'd just use the free RealPlayer feature! Why would I pay for this piece of crap when it's asking me to pay again to download a video converter from another site when I want to convert my files to something my MP4 player can read?

I'll make it absolutely clear again... DON'T DOWNLOAD THIS if you want something that would convert online FLV videos to something else like MP4 or MPEG, unless you want to pay for a seperate video converter. A free (and much easier) alternative would be the RealPlayer add on. It's a million times better than this software.

In any case, thank you GOTD for your efforts. =)

*sigh* Now I just hope I won't come across any problems uninstalling this damn thing...

(As #86 Alt Brown also commented)

As a wannabe entrepreneur, I always wish the best of luck to the software developers who offer their products for free here on these pages in the hopes of expanding sales and getting useful criticism.

Hey, at least they are trying to take some initiative by putting in a lot of hours being productive to earn a living -- it's a lot of work, whether or not they have a competitive/"winning" package.

I earnestly wish the same to the RipTiger developer.

And although I realize that sometimes one has to "jumpstart" the market to get noticed and get sales going (this GOTD being one such method), it is rare that I've seen such obvious "plugging" for this product as I noticed over on the CNET site customer review pages when looking up info about the file "inpsniffer.dll" on Google:

RipTiger 2.7.9 User Reviews:

http://download.cnet.com/RipTiger/3640-13633_4-11117349.html?tag=uo;uo

RipTiger 2.6.1 User Reviews:

http://download.cnet.com/RipTiger/3640-2071_4-11012091.html?v=1&sb=1&tag=uo;uo

What is odd/unsettling about all the 5-star comments (all with no "cons" to speak of) is that they are all clustered on certain days, as though every couple of weeks someone decided to take a break from doing something else and go post a bunch of glowing reviews that day.

All the occasional less-than-5-star reviews occur on other/independent/single-comment days. Suspicious? You decide...

Meanwhile, let's hope our GOTD users post some honest comments based on actual use, pro and con, to allow today's offering (and those on other days) stand or fall on it's own merits.

Installed & activated with no problem following the readme.txt. I am not able to download the “extra” components. It fails every time and tells me to restart the computer. XP PRO SP3.

***** DANGER *****

I am using IE8. This program completely destroyed my IE8. It would not run. As soon as I put an address into the address bar it crashed with error reporting to Microsoft. IE8 is not usable. I had to uninstall RipTiger and reinstall IE8. Use this program at your own risk if you really think it will be worth all that trouble after reading the comments above. There are too many trouble-free other programs available that will do the same thing. It was just not worth the hours I spent restoring the damage!!!

Re: 63
I did get it to activate and register. This is the full version, not their ultimate version. So as previously stated, their website indicates only the ultimate version(and, funny enough, the trial version also) record from hulu or other websites with streaming video with commercial breaks etc.

After installing, I tried it on Hulu and also AOL video, and it did not work on either.

Note that the program would not download the additional add-ins/upgrades for me either. In addition, during the install of Riptiger, the install program brought up a window to uninstall WinPCap which is a component for programs that allow you to monitor your network traffic. This seems very odd for a program that is supposedly spyware free.

This program does not seem to allow me to download anything other than the free downloader imbedded in the free Realplayer includes. And the free downloader in Realplayer is much easier and a lot less obtrusive. And I am sure there are many other examples of free software out there that let you do the same thing. Maybe the Riptiger ultimate version is much better, but they should have done that as the free giveaway today and maybe they would have got some loyal customers and much better "free" press for the future.

I have the same problem as #s 47, 58, and 59. I have an XP Pro Laptop/Tablet. I installed and activated fine, absolutely no problems. Then it says
“Riptiger has detected that your system lacks components required to watch and convert web video.
Would you like to download and install Riptiger extras now?”

I do this and it says something about the extras installation failing and that I should restart my computer or download the newest version.
What am I supposed to do?

Well... where it says "Activate or Register" I dunno, on Rip Tiger, click it, and the code should already be there.

Hope that helped!

I don't normally comment - but I have to on this one.
Installed and registered with no problem on WinXP SP3, but that's as good as gets. Prompts to load additional components, but the download fails if you try. I was unable to start Internet Explorer after RipTiger was running (IE window would flash open then immediately close.) Rebooted the computer, after which I could start IE just fine... Until I started RipTiger, then IE would no longer run.
When I went to remove RipTiger, the uninstall hung my computer after completion - had to CTRL-ALT-DEL to get back. I recommend you stay away from this one...

Long-time grateful recipient of GOTD... experienced same "bad activation" routine, went through the extra downloads, SYSTEM ID, etc., and it DOES register in XP home and Pro, but does not, as developer stated, take anything from Hulu but pre-ads. Hoping to record some of the great ads, such as that AMAZING song about hunger ("never let go of your hand")

Whew! Dozens and more dozens of registry keys, hope this program uninstalls because previous GOTD gifts do cover most downloading. Sorry this one does not do what it claims (old hand at GOTD).

Back to the freeware search. Thumbs down on this one (Trial does this, demo does that, FULL has yet a third set of features). Still love GOTD!

I've never had a problem with anything I've downloaded from GOTD before, but after reading all these comments, I think I'm gonna skip this one and it's uncertainties. We got a good streaming video ripper/converter a couple weeks ago, and I'm perfectly happy with that one. Thanks for all the input, guys...

Downloaded and was gonna give it a shot, but due to the comments re: bugs, thought I'd check it out further. Went to CNet and checked reviews. Way too many 5* ratings from profiles that joined that day and/or only had 1 review - for this program.
Absolutely does not mean there's anything wrong w/ the program. Just that kind of stuff makes my antennae twitch.

OK. I seem to have solved the problem of the extra components download failing as follows.

Check your temp folder (in WinXP C:\Documents and Settings\"YOURID"\Local Settings\Temp\).

You should find a recent folder containing Updater.exe, msvcp71.dll, mfc71.dll, msvcr71.dll, and a folder named Styles.

Close RipTiger from the system tray.

Launch the Updater executable and let it do its thing. That should prevent the "extra components" download warning on re-opening RipTiger.

Often sites don't want you saving some or all of the videos they host, & in most of those cases you can't download video directly, or simply copy it from wherever it's located as a temporary file on your drive(s). More sophisticated video downloading apps can try to sniff out the video's network stream to your browser, getting the download url that way -- this is more-or-less where RipTiger Full fits in. Sometimes that's not enough -- for example there may be keys exchanged between the player in your browser & the hosting site, &/or the video may only stream to a special player, like at CBS.com [I tried RipTIger Full on a playing video at CBS.com (where they use the Move Media Player plug-in), & it didn't work]. In those situations you can most always re-record the video as it plays, using either a special, desktop recording app, or using the "Screen Capture DirectShow Source Filter" from Unreal Streaming along with your choice of compatible video capture app [VirtualDub works].

RipTiger installs & uses winpcap, which is designed basically for sniffing/providing info on network traffic. If you have related problems, want to make sure you have the latest version etc, the winpcap install file is available as a separate download at winpcap.org. In the past it has raised some security concerns -- if that aspect concerns you, Google & make up your own mind. RipTiger also installed it's own flv player, along with ffdshow.

Ffdshow is basically a package for playing (& sometimes encoding) media files -- ffdshow is hosted on source forge, you normally want the latest test or beta version, there are a few versions of the compiled binary (i.e. usable in Windows) files, & you can pick up those versions compiled by clsid2 at videohelp.com. Ffdshow has a somewhat complicated settings GUI, & it works for most -- But Not All -- users. In a word, Backup.

Because RipTiger wants to sort of sit between on-line video & the browser where you have it playing, installation has more of an impact on Windows, & it's made worse with the inclusion of ffdshow -- Installwatch Pro recorded 9 files added to the Windows folder, & 1 of those was a driver. In XP Pro SP3 32 it also recorded ~1500 registry changes -- while some are duplicates, & many just housekeeping, that still leaves a fair amount. Ffdshow & winpcap both have their own uninstall, & together with RipTiger they were pretty good about removing themselves... however, a problem with media related apps is that, as with RipTiger, installation takes over some functions from other apps already installed -- when you remove them registry entries are deleted, but the original entries are not restored. That can break some previously installed & working apps.

If you think RipTiger might work for you where simpler apps &/or FireFox add-ins won't [they list site compatibility on their web site], backup (or at least set a restore point) & give it a try. If those simpler apps do it for you, &/or the site you're interested in isn't listed [like in my case cbs], save yourself the potential install/un-install hassles.

My main purpose for this application would be to download video at Hulu. I have tested the application and can report that RipTiger is the best application of this type for downloading Hulu's advertisments! If you like commercials this application will be nirvana for you. If you want to actually record any TV episodes or Movies at Hulu ... This application will fail miserable at that! It does not download Hulu ... to my knowledge no application will. Some may from time to time but none will most of the time. Would you buy a car that only works some of the time?

RipTiger has been ripped off my system!

I am also not able to download the "extra" components which may be only available in the ULTIMATE or MEDIA SUITE Upgrade versions of this software. However, only the representative from Rip Tiger can confirm this.

The process of the registration was just fine (Windows XP x32). The only problem is- after starting the program- it shows some pop- up dialog for some missing components:
http://www.imagehousing.com/imageupload.php?id=355337
It is offering to download the extras, and after attempting to do it, it shoes an error:
http://www.imagehousing.com/imageupload.php?id=355338
In the install directory exist a file UPDATER.EXE. After executing this file, it downloads something, it shows a dialog about “Installation complete”, or something, and after that the dialog with the “missing components” shows again…
The program works fine without these extras. Does somebody know WTF are these extras?
Seems like the developers have a lot more work to do…
