After all the aggravation Power Archiver will not say "registered". And I've been one of the GOTD crowd for YEARS. It even led me to BUY some software. But this got me so pissed off I uninstalled it and downloaded 7-Zip which was NOT my intention.

I used this program as a giveaway for years and always appreciated the advanced conversion and other reliable and quick features, as well as the UI. However, it was always a pain to register. I even sought help from the developer and got it, even though it was a giveaway. One day, I saw a great deal to purchase a 3-year license. I did to avoid the semi-annual and upgrade hassle, and the registration was extremely expedited compared to the clunky, inconsistent, giveaway registration that didn't always work. No back-and-forth confirmations and keys that don't work. It's too bad the giveaway registration process is so complicated and buggy, because it overshadows the fact that the application is really quite handy and worth eventually purchasing. I feel like I am rewarding bad behavior by purchasing for these reasons, but at least I don't have to keep dealing with the registration frustrations to keep an application that I use a lot.

May I point out to everyone that Windows 8 - 10 can zip and unzip all files.

Roland Pierce, so can windows 98 and XP and Vista and Windows 7 too as well as the server variants of all those operating systems excluding Windows 98 which did not have a server variant of course.

I don't know if PowerArchiver 2018 is new on the market or not but I would advise anyone trying this program to make certain that they can uncompress any file that they have compressed without errors.

Children, do not take a steam bath. Just download from the official site of winrar and use it eternally and free of charge. It is only necessary to get used to importunate reminders that this program paid and to ignore them. In the new winrar version there is opportunity at choice to archive, both in the new rar5 format, and in old rar4 that completely solves all problems with compatibility with old winrar versions. It seems to me that the real winrar does not come within miles of all the analogs offered not absolutely.

Mili - Conexware, could you please clarify as on your website $22.95 price is for the perpetual PowerArchiver 2018 Standard Home and Word or Business EU and there is no mention of a 12 month limitation to the license if I understand the meaning of the word "Perpetual" correctly: https://www.powerarchiver.com/order/

So basically is this a "Perpetual" usage license with 12 months free updates thrown in as an EXTRA addition to a normal giveaway which does not normally include upaid future upadates. Currently the wording implies a non-perpetual usage license and enquiring minds would like to know are we being offered a better than normal or worse than normal giveaway?

Also do you have a comprehensive list of ALL of the 60+ archive formats? Are these really different formats or some are just renamed versions of the same format or one format like zip but each zip specific compression algorithm classed as a different archive format... e.g. Store (no compression), Shrink, Reduce (levels 1-4), Implode, Deflate, Deflate64, bzip2, LZMA (EFS), WavPack, and PPMd are all used in ZIP format so should be one archive format and not 9...

Does powerarchiver 2018 standard support .PMA archives with -pm1- and -pm2- compression methods and if it does can it create them too?

This might be a stupid question question but along with mp3s, can you add the video files ? And can other people open the files you send with any zip program? Thanks in advance

Reply   |   Comment by Rena  –  6 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Rena,
yes, you can combine anything and unzipping depends in which extension you are zipping. IZARc is also a good choice.

Reply   |   Comment by Prashant  –  6 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Hi Rena,

Yes, other software will be able to open .zip files just fine, as well as other formats such as .7z.
To be sure, please use the .zip format and the Deflate method of compression. That will make the archive compatible with pretty much all other compression software out there. Also, feel free to compress mp3's, videos, other files into one .zip archive, that will work just fine.

Reply   |   Comment by Mili - Conexware  –  6 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Mili - Conexware, Thank you very much for your reply, will have to play,,what is the deflate method ? thanks in advance .

Reply   |   Comment by Rena  –  6 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Rena,
You are very welcome!
When creating a new archive, notice a few dropdowns in the Add screen, one of them is Method.
The default method is Deflate, which is the optimal method in your case, so you don't need to re-select it. After selecting the Zip format, you may proceed to creating the archive and the compatible archive will be created.
Hope that helps, please don't hesitate to write us at support at conexware dot com and we'll be glad to assist further.

Reply   |   Comment by Mili - Conexware  –  6 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Rena, It is not a stupid question... but it very unlikely you will get usefull compression, if any, with any archive compression format when zipping or any other type because mp3 and almost all video formats are already heavily compressed already. The only advantages I can think of is bundling 2 or more media files together, like main vid and promo sampler video and screenshots and subtitle srt files... they also usually perform some kind of digital hash or checksum of the contained files to detect most forms of corruption in transit and also the possibility to add strong encryption into the mix to protect the content from unwanted copying. To ensure any "zip" program can extract a video you need to ensure you use a compatible compression method and encryption if you choose to use them... Not all (un)zip programs handle AES-256 or Deflate64 sometimes used to squeeze a bit of compression on already comrpressed media files. Modern ones *should* but there is no garantee they will. It ispossible really old libraries like that used on XP SP3 may not handle them.

People complain when programs only come with a 6 month license. Now, the new norm is to complain that it's only a one year option ? Following that logic the nest step will be to complain about a lifetime option than asking if the license can be handed down to your grandkids. Ka'mon, be fair. If you like the program after a yr. buy it. It's just good 'ol fashion capitalism. If I make something and you like it, buy it when the license expires. Yeesh....kids.

Not a bad program but nothing special either. I like the preview screen for read me files. But hey, can you make the registration process any harder? I mean it's like you had a contest in the office on how miserable we can make this vs click install - boom registered.

I like that when it detects a setup.exe file, It gives you the option to delete the temporary files/folders that are created during the installation process.

Such a long and complicated registration process ... Is it really necessary to put people through all these hoops, I thought developers would make the registration process simple so that people can access their wears easily. As for the actual software why buy software like this when there are plenty of freeware options that update and seldom require registration. I did download and try it out and it works absolutely fine, but I've no need of it.

What does Powerarchiver want to achieve with this? JPG, MP3, MP4 are already compressed? Creating a ZIP file makes no sense at all.

Hello Melvinne Cooper,

Try compressing those files using the .PA format. It contains codecs for further compression of said files and can compress them even further.

Ootje,

In my version of Windows 10 Pro, I just right click on one or a set of files I want to zip and select "Send to" then "Compressed (zipped) folder". Does that not work for you?

Reply   |   Comment by Patrick  –  6 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Patrick, Yhanks, I have seen it now.
Unzip is the third choice and Zip is some entry in Send To. ?? No I do not want to send it, just zip. And that why I did not take a better look in that choice.
Why not Zip and Unzip next to each other?
I have also learned that to add something to WMplayer is also there.:

Mili - Conexware, and then the recipiant requires a specific program to extract, test or view the .PA format archives... but isn't .PA file extension also the file extension for Print Artist project files?
https://fileinfo.com/extension/pa
https://filext.com/file-extension/PA
https://file.org/extension/pa
https://www.file-extension.org/extensions/pa
https://en.downloadastro.com/Windows%20Files/pa/

None seem to reference any form of archiver...
.PA file extension seems like a perfect way to confuse a recipient to me.

Ootje, Glad I could help! Your posted images in the past have been most helpful to me. But I don't see a way to add something to WMPlayer on my "Send to" popup screen. Nor do I see anything on your dropbox image after I translate from the Dutch. What are you referring to, exactly?

Reply   |   Comment by Patrick  –  5 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Patrick, I did made mistakes. No Send to..
Just play music by Explorer, right click and start WMplayer:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/05uziosm2upljfk/Play.png
To add more music to WMplayer you need Explorer:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5sdoini0chjdlf6/AddTitle.png
I did not find a menu in WMplayer itself:

Is there any advantage over the free and feature loaded 7-zip, justifying the obviously complicated activation procedure for a use time of mere 12 months?

I don't think so!

After trying a different email address, then it was able to register. I have to say the registration process on this is ridiculous. Try keeping it to one step.

And after that the GOTD-code was used/gone. I had to obtain a new GOTD-code.

If the license remains valid, ok. But so i prefer the freeware versions of 7z or others, even if the other softwares compress less than this one.

You may go to Configuration>File formats and disassociate them and then associate them with another program if needed.
