Glad I didn't have to pay good money for this software. It's unreliable! It randomly fails to recognize my dvd burner. Plato seems to offer zero support. Thanks anyway GOTD for offering the trial. I know now to ignore Plato products in future.

This program is great!!! In about 30 minutes I can make copies of DVD's for myself or anyone else. I like the fact that it gives you the option of compressing to either a single OR double layer DVD. Probably the best free DVD coping program I've found and beleive me, I've tried a bunch of them. It's very simple and straight forward to use. Big Thumbs for this one.

It is illegal to bypass copyright protection technology. Anyone downloading this is a felon

It is not illegal to make backup copies of your own DVD movies !!

DVD Decrpyter does the same thing too AND IT’S FREE.
Only problem is that the project was stopped/shut down.
But still. DVD Decrypter allows you to rip and back up a DVD even if it’s copy protected.

imj. burn takes over from Decrypter

Still getting comments about how it's wrong to make money, and DVD Decrypter is better, and free. Did anyone read my comments? Also, nobody has responded to my point that the "free" FabDecrypter costs $50.

That said, my second experience with Plato DVD Copy was not as good as the first. Trying to copy "Perfume", it goes for 2 1/4 hours with 1/2 hour left, then hangs at 85% with a message that it was unable to complete. I tried twice with the same result.

A FAQ on the Web page hints that I might be able to solve this by selecting ASPI in the "File Settings dialog". I cannot find a "File Settings" dialog, and unlike come companies, this one does not apparently follow our comments--and of course there's no support for Giveaway of the Day downloads.

Does anyone else know where there's a File Settings dialog?

WTF is that about???? I already regged it (username was giveawayoftheday (surprise not) and a number which I copied and pasted both in and clicked ok
First was thumbs up - now??? have a guess....

Hi
Really nothing so special about this one. Seems that it is made only to make some money.
And this is true and I recommend it:
"DVD Decrpyter does the same thing too AND IT’S FREE.
Only problem is that the project was stopped/shut down.
But still. DVD Decrypter allows you to rip and back up a DVD even if it’s copy protected.

This company above charges you for that same time of work. For 22 cents off of 40 bucks.

Can be found here.

so if the original becomes accidentally unreadable or destroyed, you LEGALLY MUST destroy the backup copy as you now lack proof of ownership of the original :-)

Just because it doesn't work, doesn't mean you don't own it.
These arguments are all ridiculous.

Just wish the product would have worked.

I installed and of course I get an error different than most, "no dvd burner found". Regardless, Since the end of DVDXCopy Ive been using 1 Click DVD w/ Any DVD in bkgrnd but its so slow, the idea that this one took a half hour was attractive. What is out there that is fast ?

There's notyhing illegal about making backups of DVD and Software titles, as long as you don't distribute to others or charge. It's for you and you only. A. Turney stop being ridiculous. No one is a felon for making a backup. Either way IDK about this particular program. I haven't been pleased with GOTD lately. Average programs with WAY better freeware counterparts. DVDFab Decrypter is one example.

This program did work and was very easy to use. The registration code and user name were provided after installing and prior to launching the program.

I backed up a new release movie and it copied great. When I tried to watch the back up copy, commercials started and when it got to the menu, play did not appear to work. I closed the program and tried again and selected scenes and started it at 1 and it played from here on. I am using windows vista premium.

THUMBS UP for a free program that works!

Installed great...and works, what more can I ask for...Thanks for doing this for us.

Ps...little slower working than they said...but what the heck, at the cost of replacing them....worth the wait

I hope this works, because my first post doesn't seem to have shown up here.

Thumbs up to #63 & #76. I'm SO tired of people complaining about software being offered to them for FREE! It's ridiculous having to wade through hundreds of posts just to find a few nuggets of useful information.

With respect to all the free software everyone's talking about... Fine--I'm as happy as anyone to learn about free alternatives. But the attitude that this is a big evil company because they're actually trying to make money?! And once a free alternative is mentioned--it isn't necessary for 20 other people to repeat the same thing! If you want to continue to discuss the alternatives, there's a forum thread set up for that very purpose.

Thank you to #94 and a few others who actually posted useful information with data to back it up, rather than just the constant "Yes, it's legal", "No, it's not" back and forth and on and on and on, with no evidence for either side of the argument.

As for the specific alternatives mentioned... I downloaded DVD Decrypter and tried it out. Sure, it might be more flexible and powerful than today's offering, but it sure isn't more convenient! First of all, there's no documentation, and all of the instructions I was able to find on the Web required the use of two or three programs, sometimes including Nero, which, by the way, is a commercial, relatively expensive program.

If DVDFab Decrypter is free, they have it well hidden. The Web page shows an order price of $50, which happens to be $10 more than Plato (and $50 more than today's price!).

This program just works for me. I'm not into DVD formats; I just want an easy, reliable way to back up discs that I own--and it does that, and does it well. In my case, it's a lifesaver, because I have not just one, but two DVD players that consistently refuse to play many of my newer DVDs--I assume because of the copy protection. The first one, at least, that I copied with this software ran without a problem.

I have a single drive on my laptop, my the way, and it works just fine.

I did see one error message during installation, which I posted here earlier. (I apologize if that one shows up, too.) I'm running Vista Ultimate x64. The message said, "Program Compatibility Assistant: Windows requires a digitally signed driver...The driver is unavailable and the program that uses this driver might not work correctly." It refers to pcouffin.sys. Nevertheless, the program seems to work, anyway.

For those who have been suspicious of the company, you can check out their site at http://www.dvdtompegx.com . It was tested clean by SiteAdvisor. Judging from the English on the site, the company does not appear to be in the U.S. My guess is Germany, since that's the first language that's listed as a display option. But so what? It doesn't matter where it is, if the product is good.

Thanks very much, GAOTD and Plato. You are appreciated.

Another great program from GAOTD and still comments on the legalities of backing up your own collection of DVD movies!
It would be better to say "In SOME countries it is illegal not all of them that visit this site"

Comments on the program having no registration, I can only assume some people click straight through on install and missed the final part that tells you the registration name is giveawayoftheday and then followed by a key which is simply copied and pasted.

Finally comments on DVD Shrink or DVD Decrytor being free, Well sure they are but when where these last updated to cope with the newer encryption?
I still use Shrink with AnyDVD (AnyDVD basically makes your PC/DVD ROM *see* past any encrypion on newer discs)
Plato DVD copy shall I say is just as good as the other programs out there but will obviously get past newer movie titles.

Now, Do you download a program being given free or keep buying new DVD's when the children damage them.

Mmm, I know what I'm doing!

This is now the 4th time i'm trying to install software from this sitein the last few weeks. I used to have no problems, but since they switched to this new system, I ALWAYS have an Error: "FATAL ERROR - KEY is INVALID".

I have also tried to pst this each time.. and have never gotten a respponse, or evn seen my post get out of Moderation. I hope this works today, or I'm giving up on this site.

I hipe I can get soem help before the time runs out on todays download.

Rod, comment #118, never saw the box pop up, also have never had an issue registering software from GOTD before.

Although a lot of users are computer literate, however when offering software to the masses, the process should be geared toward the least common denominator, or the user who has the least technical ability.

Because the registration process is different for this software does not mean we are not computer savy.

Thanks for pointing out where the registration is, too late for me as I am at work and will not be home in time to register this before the offer ends.

@A.Turny

"It is illegal to bypass copyright protection technology. Anyone downloading this is a felon."
This is defiantly not true, first of all downloading it does no mean you are going to use it (highly unlikely)but in this case you are not a felon. Also, in Canada, and I believe the US it is legal to make backup copies of your own DVD's in case one gets damaged. So be quiet and stop accusing everyone of something they have not and are not (necessarily) going to do.

Slow down. They pop up in a box as the program installs. You copy username first and then paste into the registration box, Then you copy the Key and paste that in.Just follow that....Jeezzz. Slow down.
Some have tried 3 times to get it right. It makes you wonder about some peoples ability to run a computer. Its a powerfull machine.

Been looking for a quick and easy 'free-ware' for all-in-one dvd to dvd ripping/copying. So this is perfect timing.. thank you GOTD! It copied/burned well, but I haven't confirmed quality of the dvd copy.

If I had to pay $40 for it, I'd opt for DVDFAB Platinum which gives a few more options and seems more flexible. Just my $0.02.
