I simply like it. It converted nicely even a PDF with tabs and arrows, without mixing the content; basically does what it says. So...
Many thanks.

What program such as today's giveaway will allow you to edit a PDF, so to change only a few words in the document, but will save it back to a PDF?

Thanks

#12, I should have waited for your warning. Yes, UniPDF planted garbageware on me. I really was looking for the "Do you decline to have sh*t added to your computer?" button, but I must have missed something. Anyway, Revo Pro cleaned it all out. I only lost 20 minutes or so.

@Louis Gu (#16):

You still insist on shilling for this Epubor website? I'm actually going to go ahead and grant you that Calibre has a bit of a learning curve, and performing conversions is not "idiot-proof". But the answer is certainly not to go the Epubor website and download your... um... their overpriced, one-dimensional software.

So here are some alternatives. All of them happen to be cloud-based conversion services. They are all user-friendly, easy to use, convert from/to MANY different formats, and all are FREE. As an additional benefit, many of them also do format conversions besides pdf/ebooks (like audio or video). [Since a number of them actually use Calibre to do the ebook conversions, you get the benefit of Calibre without the learning curve and without being forced to organize your ebooks the "Calibre way"]:

This first one Giovanni (and others have already mentioned),

ConvertFiles.com

And here are some additional ones which weren't mentioned, but they are very nice services that I have used:
EbookConverter.net

ABBYY FineReader Online: OCR service; can convert scans and PDFs to editable text

Online-Convert.com: Multiple format ebook conversion; the main website also does audio, video, archive, etc conversions (like Convertfiles.com)

CloudConvert.org: Awesome website! Relatively young, user-friendly service handles all sorts of file formats, and their ebook conversions have never let me down. I use them all the time to back up my Amazon AZW3-format books to EPUB

So again, with all these wonderful, free tools available, why would someone want to pay for the one-trick ponies over at Epubor??

PDF to Word Converter does NOT have a 5 star rating from Brothersoft. In fact, no PDF converter software has a 5 star rating from Brothersoft. And there isn't a PDF converter that deserves a 5 star rating.

Not that it's all their fault, though. The bar needs to be set extremely high for conversion software. There are so many considerations to address:
There are so many PDF editor and converter and composer software products out there. All creating drastically different PDF's containing drastically different objects.

I once took a Word doc that contained just one 10 point font and "printed" it with 3 different well-known PDF print utilities, using their default settings. The 3 resulting PDF's had font sizes of 9.81, 9.96 and 10.02 points.

And there are so many PDF versions (1.0 thru 1.7, with 2.0 on the way) and so many PDF subsets (PDF/A, PDF/E, PDF/UA, PDF/VT, PDF/X).

And so many structural differences between the PDF format and the Word format.
And so many PDF's that are very poorly designed and/or haphazardly edited.

I would pay handsomely for a conversion product that could address all the nuances but I don't ever expect to see one that will even come close.

I typically test these converters with an array of PDF 1.4 and PDF 1.7 and PDF/X and PDF/A files. Some pages with text, some pages with graphics, some pages with watermarks, etc. I generate copies of the test PDF files using various PDF editors and creators.
I've tried PDF to Word Converter a few times. It failed my tests. It did not produce output I could trust.

As well, I do not trust, nor do I use, software from companies that use deceptive business practices in their advertising.

These guys have no webpage with a price or info about how to buy this product. Just a few pages offering me a "FREE DOWNLOAD!" of their product. The purchase page is indeed on their website (register.html), but the method they provide to get to it requires you to download the "free" software and then "register" it.
I guess their mentality is, "Let's get our crippleware on their machine, get them committed to using it, get them needing it to do more, and only then will we tell them how much it costs for the non-crippleware version".

Their website, and the PDFZilla website, have all kinds of links to all kinds of PDF converters (they call them "Partner Products"), most of which sell for the regular price of $49.95, even including the all-in-one converter "PDFzilla". Very confusing...

The first main section of text on the PDFZilla home page is written as if their product only does PDF to Word (oops...). The structure of this section is identical to the PDF to Word Converter homepage, and they have "cleverly" changed the sentences around to hide this similarity. (But, it's like putting a bowtie on a pig so it won't look like the pig beside it).

Pass.

Just personal opinion but I think any converter should work both ways. Convert flv to avi should also convert avi to flv. Convert pdf to doc should also convert doc to pdf. Otherwise its usefulness is severely limited.

That's strange...I never got infected by any malware after installing UniPdf (I downloaded from Softpedia though).

Anyway, try this magic FREE tool to remove that hijacker:

Or:

Or better yet, if you are interested in converting your PDF files to WORD only, just use "Nemo PDF to Word", which is in my view a far better PDF converter (can even convert only partial pages from large PDF files with ease!!):

@ Robert Garofalo (#8)

Hey, Robert Garofalo, I have to acknowledge that Calibre actually was an awesome eBook conversion tool which can convert almost entire eBooks to any other formats to be read on other diverse e-readers such as Kindle, Sony, Apple, etc. But you may know that Calibre is really complex to use well. The users should be familiar with it well, then you may need to trial it for several times till you realize its functionality expertly. After you the experience processing, you may be fond of this eBook conversion tool.

But series Epubor products' advantages are that you can directly operate them very well, no probation, no boring finding work. And most important, Epubor Ultimate Converter delete the DRM protection straight. But as to Calibre you should take efforts to find out, download, install the DRM-delete widgets. That is a little horrible for computer beginners.

So, in a summary, Epubor Ultimate Converter still have some advantages over than Calibre. If you wanna learn more the difference between them, please reference to its official website. www.epubor.com .

Works very well. I just used it on a "xzy for Dummies" PDF and it extracted the text and image data as expected. The formatting was a marginally off, and so were the fonts.
I also tested on a large table heavy pricelist PDF, which worked like other PDF convertors I have tested - the tables are not rendered as tables in Word, but as a single line. My guess is this is a limitation of the formatting.
For me it's a keeper!
Overall I would give this a score of 4 out of 5

I have a program called PDFTiger which I downloaded from GAOTD on 1st March 2010 which has an almost identical interface to this one. The first file I tried on PDF to Word Converter hung at 9%; the same thing happened when I tried it on PDFTiger, so I think they must be virtually the same program.

In fairness, other pdf converters had trouble with this file, producing slow and bloated results. When I tried PDF to Word Converter on other files, the conversion was surprisingly fast, albeit variable in quality.

GOTD please note and remove the comment above that recommends 'UniPDF' as an alternative (comment from Ashraf from DotTech).

DO NOT INSTALL UniPDF.

I am still getting rid of the malware the installer installed. It has taken me an hour to be able to get back on to any web site other than the delta search page, because of the hijacker it planted on my system. And I have another five unwanted, malicious pieces of crapware (although AVG already removed one of them for me) before even uninstalling UniPDF.

Of course, if you enjoy the challenge of wasting hours cleaning a system of malware, then go ahead...

Hey Louis Gu (#2):

You really got some pair! In your pseudo-review in slot #2, you complain about today's GOTD as

Expensive. What a mediocre program, that’s never worth of $39.95...

And then you refer us to a site which is selling a program for $49.95!

Worse yet, the program being sold there is built on the backs of other people's work and code. Code which those people put out for free. Like the ebook anti-DRM functions coming from The Dark Reverser's Python code and the ebook format-conversion tools basically duplicating the capability of the free Calibre program.

But the part of your post that really made me laugh is when you said

A poor single-function tool is only capable to convert PDF books to word...

Oh, so you resent that the GOTD is a single-function tool? Then why refer us to this "Epubor" website, where almost every single thing they sell is an over-priced, single-function tool? Take a look at their side panel entitled "Ebook Tools", and you'll see things like their "Epub to Mobi" converter, a one-trick-pony that they sell for a whopping $19.99. How about "Epub to PDF"? Sure, we can sell you that too, for $19.95! Practically everything in that column is one-function software, all of them going for a ludicrous $20 a pop, an obvious money-grab considering that all those myriad conversions can be achieved for free with an esteemed, well-supported app like Calibre, or even something like Hamstersoft's Free Ebook Converter (which I believe uses the Calibre libraries anyway).

Considering that your struggling English is almost identical to that found on the "Epubor" site, I think it would be safe to conclude that you are affiliated with that site in some way, maybe even the owner/operator. In any case GOTD-ers know when someone is trying to con them, and we don't take kindly to it. So do us a favor, get lost, and take your shilling somewhere else.

Well, the most important feature a PDF converter should have is the QUALITY of the output file, besides being able to handle tables, images and hyperlinks, of course.

Unfortunately this GAOTD utterly fails to deliver good quality in the resulting converted Word document and this is enough for me to give it a THUMBS DOWN, not to mention that it can perform just one conversion (from PDF to WORD): how about other editable file formats (DOCX, HTML, TXT, IMAGES etc...??

Dude, for 40 bucks you must do more....much much more: as matters stand, it's not worth downloading even as FREEWARE....LOL!!

When it eventually allowed me to enter the registration code, endlessly opening new tabs in my browser, a simple interface appeared.

I tested it on three files, the first one lots of graphics, it made a total mess of it, the second one an instruction manual simple graphics but text in columns became so large and so convoluted that word could not open it.

The third, and by this stage I don't have much faith it produced an absolutely perfect document, it was a mixture of text and graphics produced by OpenOffice..

In all cases the file size increase was mind-boggling, the second one went from 8 megs to more than 200, the third one went from less than 1 meg to 35 meds.

After I had tried on the first 2 document I was ready to slate it but then on the third try it produced an absolutely perfect document, so I will keep it, but then I do keep a number of converters.

I keep a number of them because I know the complexity of a PDF files internal structure; it can vary from just a number of images of text to compressed text and images plus masses of formatting instructions. Sometimes one of them will produce a decent document and I keep that one.

If you're going to keep it just keep an eye on the file size it produces, they are humongous.

#4:
The point is not that you cannot change C:\ to C:\Program Files (or C:\Program Files (x86) for what it matters). The point is that it should not have C:\ by default in the first place. This is absolutely against Microsoft standard procedures for program installations. Same goes for C:\output instead of C:\My Documents. This is bad programming because you cannot count on users to pay that much attention to where the product will install.

If a PDF can be converted into Word, it may be then better to import the PDF directly into OpenOffice or LibreOffice. There is not point nowadays to stick to Microsoft Word anyway. Besides, what's the point in converting into Word? Rewrite the PDF and make it yours ---what about copyrights? Make slight modifications? In the latter case, there are other tools.

But chances are that any PDF cannot be converted into anything, especially if it's the result of a transformation of an image into a PDF.

This GOTD is another "smart" software among dozens that cannot even do the job properly. Then, it's badly programmed, in an unprofessional manner (see #1: "install in C:\", LOL). If you like this kind of software, you may try PDF to TXT/Word converter (this is just an example, haven't tried it as I use gsview for text extractions and python scripts to parse the result).

The comment from 1.
*Wants to install directly into C:/ instead if C:/Program Files
*Wants to output into C:/output instead of a better location like My Documents
Is not a con.
You can change the install directory when you install the program and you can change the output directory once the program is installed. It installed quick and clean and is very easy to use. However, I found that if you use the cut and paste keyboard command (ctrl c & ctrl v )this works much better for me. OK so this program will do batch copying but I don't need that. If you just want to cut and paste then I don't think its what you need but try it, its a neat little program and its free.

Cos : Single-function.

Expensive.

What a mediocre program, that's never worth of $39.95. A poor single-function tool is only capable to convert PDF books to word. I suppose this commonplace program cannot be enough to satisfy the eBook fans' requirement of eBook conversion.
