What 2TB limit? Even FAT32 can go above 2TB.

The first thing after launching GPT Loader, it prompt me to create a recovery cd but I didnt see any option to create a recovery cd in this program.
It doesn't create RCD, that prompt is a left-over which should be removed from the tool completely.

FWIW you can’t turn a *regular* hard drive to GPT unless the drive is empty.
Normally you can't do it, that's right. But GPT Loader can - it converts non-empty disk into GPT without data loss.
Still guys recommending to backup no matter what before you try anything new are quite right - backup is a must have even if one uses 100% tested and reliable software, because if something goes wrong and he doesn't have backup he would have nobody to blame but himself :-)

@15 Leland, Your advice would be perfect except for one thing. Have another look at #2. I was actually in the process of making a system backup image with Paragon software when it trashed my machine.

Many thanks to everyone who confirmed they had a similar experience. It's no consolation to me to know that more people went through the same misery, but hopefully, some others will now have been spared.

Sorry guys, this is slightly off-topic, but important.

I too have had problems with Paragon Backup and Recovery 10 and 9. Similar problems where if the machine fails for any reason during restore, the system is trashed to the point where even the BOOT CD no longer works. It was necessary to remove the drive and reinstall using a second computer with the drive connected externally. This has happened several times, not just once. In backup/restore operations the system must be absolutely fail-safe. Paragon please listen to this feedback, you are losing your good name. I know it's free, but when fiddling with the hard drive it HAS to be safe.

There are other problems also, with failure to include archives in the database during manual inclusion, tiny dialogs where archive names/comments cannot be read properly, failure to cope with hardware errors and language.

Constructive feedback intended here!

@2&4: this is silly. just because a program doesn't works on some systems you trash the company. i have succesfully used paragon and will continue to do so in the future, it's just that... i know what i am doing.
You should mess with software that may affect your system if you don't know how to use it. I think Paragon and Acronis are the best in harddisk management nowdays.

Now, on with the program: it's a great idea, but not many are able to test it. maybe Paragon should take us a little slower as not so many have 3+ TB hdds. Plus, strange terms of use...

#2: "A previous Paragon giveaway, Paragon System Backup 2010, trashed my Windows XP SP3 system. After making a systems snapshot it said it needed to restart the system to complete the process. I clicked ok, and that was the end of my operating system. I couldn’t even boot into safe mode, or last known configuration. I had a blank screen and blinking cursor."

Obviously I can't add anything that would help as you've reinstalled Windows etc., but in case anyone else gets into a similar situation...

System Backup adds a boot loader -- it's what the PC/laptop bios reads to determine what files to boot & run, & in this case it's added before the normal Windows' boot loader so you can restore a backup using that F1 key. It seems clear something didn't work as intended. The fix would be to either restore that portion of the hard drive so you again just had the Windows boot loader, or to add/install another boot loader that hopefully would work with Windows as installed. If something like that happens & you have on-line access (using another system) you'll find all sorts of solutions.

One way to put things back is to restore a backup, probably in this case just the 1st hard disk track, which Paragon's other backup apps let you backup separately from the full disk/partition. Since this backup file is pretty small, just a couple of MB if that, it's quick & easy to try. It also rarely changes, so creating one of those backups to a bootable CD can well be worth the effort. Microsoft also includes some fixes on it's Windows install discs -- you can boot from the disc, go into Recovery Console, & run Fixboot for example, or in more drastic cases, you can do a Repair Install, which tries to re-install Windows while keeping all your updates, software, & customizations intact.

Before using any tool like this you should make an image backup in case anything goes wrong. Then in a worst case scenario you just spend a little while to restore a system instead of a complete reinstall. I use Acronis for this purpose but Paragon has given away software here that can do the same. Remember it is always better to be safe than sorry.

BTW, in reading the description this does not seem to mess with the drive Windows is installed on but is rather for use with drives hooked up as secondary storage. If you have Windows vista or above you probably already have support for 3TB+ drives...

FWIW you can't turn a *regular* hard drive to GPT unless the drive is empty. You also can't boot XP to a GPT drive -- the Paragon GPT loader will only let XP access it, which it can't do by default. You also can't use it on external/removable drives.

That's NOT to say don't download or try the GPT Loader -- Please do if you can -- but I hope that might save some folks a bit of time if like me they thought of checking it out, only to find out later it would be impractical because they don't have an internal disk that's either clear or can easily be cleared. Otherwise GPT is superior, & Microsoft.com has some good info you'll find using Google/Bing

I love GOTD but I have to backup #2 and #4 as I had EXACT same experience as 2 and had to spend hours to recover a corrupted partition after running Paragon Partition Alignment Tool. Something is amiss here, and I am no longer going to trust my system to Paragon. Don't attempt without being prepared to rebuild your OS.

So this initiative seems to be fairly good only for users who run virtual systems.

User beware. Under no circumstances would I ever install Paragon software again.

A previous Paragon giveaway, Paragon System Backup 2010, trashed my Windows XP SP3 system. After making a systems snapshot it said it needed to restart the system to complete the process. I clicked ok, and that was the end of my operating system. I couldn’t even boot into safe mode, or last known configuration. I had a blank screen and blinking cursor. The F1 setup came up, but it reported “no HDD”. I had to rebuild the machine and then reinstall Windows from scratch.

What’s more, another user called goodtogo reported exactly the same problem with a subsequent Paragon giveaway.

I shall wait to see with interest whether this message gets published.
