If I enter a "Search for" term as a single word known to be in a file it is found.

If I search for an exact match text string of multiple words (a phrase) it is found.

If I search for multiple words randomly scattered throughout the document they are not.

When "Find"ing in the preview pane the matched text string (word or phrase) is highlighted; but in my test the view did not jump to the point in the document where it exists.

I have not found any built-in or online help, only a page to submit a support ticket. I would like to know if there is a way to use something like "regular expressions" or similar to gain more general matching.

When entering another "Search for" term the "File types" chosen earlier are unchecked and the selection(s) must chosen again, tedious.

As stated in previous comments (below), perhaps the v2.0 "Pro" improves the experience. As is, this is not useful to me.

I'll skip this as I have Windows 10, have indexing turned on on my systems with hard drives, but don't need it for those with SSDs, and use the File Explorer search function. Any index-able file gets indexed, even if in a compressed file or folder. The performance cost is really negligible to do the indexing. The SSD is so fast that it will search almost as fast as if indexed. For files for which the content cannot be indexed (like images, videos, proprietary formats, the name and properties are indexed, or searched. Yes, your computer may be slow, but if it is it will be slow with any search program.

This should have included the word "Basic" in the title for today's offer, as that is the version received.

However, from my experience using this today I'm thinking I got sub-Basic.

As compared to what is shown on their product website, when activated I see none of the following:

Window titlebar: MSTech Search in Contents
Menu categories: File Edit Options Search Help
Tabs for multiple searches as described: Search Topic One (Two Three)
Simple or Advanced Search (or settings)
Search Parameters

Possibly the last three are only in the "Pro" edition; but it seems I'm missing the display of important functional features. Why no window titlebar or the typical menu categories?

How can I set options if there is no "Options" button displayed as shown on their web page:

https://searchincontents.com/features/

...unless, of course, that web page shows only the v2.0 "Pro" version, and what I'm describing is how the stripped-down v1.8 "Basic" version is supposed to appear and function?

I use frequently Archivarius 3000 (Ἀρχειοφύλακας) for maybe over 2 decades for my classical Greek and very satisfied. Purchased for a fair price they do continuous updates without never asking for payment. It highlights my keywords in preview (you can copy text from it) and with a click of a button it opens the original file. It indexes, so it can search documents even if they are not physically accessible. I am surprised why people do not talk about it!

I have a very fast PC and find this program to be horribly slow.

A real progress bar would have been nice.

I stopped it before it was done. It found some files but the Preview pane is not useful. Double-clicking the filename should open it in the registered application. OK, I found it in the preview window. I suppose if I make settings files for each type of document and possible storage locations, it will be faster. I think I added too many folders.

Installed fine. Got key from readme.txt. Tried to search. Not only was nothing found on files that number in the hundreds, a fatal error is always generated and the program crashes. No opportunity to enter key. Uninstalled and reinstalled. Same thing. Useless.

What am I missing???

Diane Tabbott,
I had the same problem. Install - starts fine...? Nowhere to enter the license code, nor anywhere to go to, to enter the license code.
I did need to uninstall vers 1.5.4 but during that event and even when I uninstalled 1.8.6 and reinstalled after deleting all registry entries - found No registration path or opportunity. A mystery!

#15 Addition to my last comment: I added the .pub extension to the extension list and I changed a lengthy file with a .txt extension to .pub extension. Unfortunately it did NOT find my keyword. It said no matches had been found. Sadly it seems to ignore .pub files.

#15 You can add to the extensions list from the settings menu. It definitely adds .pub to the list but I haven't any publisher files so I couldn't do any searches on .pub. No reason why it shouldn't work.

I searched .doc files in my documents folder for words "Jerry calls her". Two files were found BUT there is nothing listed in the Search Results box!
I'm sure this software does more than verify that I have two .doc files with the matching term but if it doesn't give me file names, what good is it?
Obviously, something is wrong and since I've never made a mistake, it must be the software :)
The concept is great but unless I can know why I'm not seeing the expected results, I'll uninstall.
Thank you.

#5 See #12. I have so much stuff on my laptop that it would have taken ages to index. I ran the tests immediately after installation so there would not have been sufficient time to index all of it even if indexing had been initiated at the time of installation and had continued running in the background. Perhaps the developer can confirm.

#12 Well, what do you know! I put a doc file of accented Greek text in the above selection (now 283 files) and ran Agent Ransack after 10 secs came up with no find. IMSTechSearch ran for 2 mins and then showed the file containing the keyword (ἔργα ἃ ἐγὼ) I was searching for. I particularly liked the fact that by clicking on this file entry it showed the file in the preview with the keyword in the "find" field. All I had to do was click on the find button and the keyword was highlighted in the preview text. Yes, Agent Ransack can show this in it's particular format but I liked the precise clean presentation by MSTechSearch.

Perhaps speed shouldn't be the sole consideration. Viewing this software in a new light - a keeper for me!

After slight hitch with registration (my bad) I ran a quick comparison of the software with Agent Ransack purely on the speed aspect. There were a substantial number of subdirectories to search through and 382 files were checked. Setting up the search was quicker on Agent Ransack but I would have to say that would probably have been due to my being familiar with it. The actual search by MSTech took 1min15sec and found 6 instances of the the keyword (one word). Agent Ransack took 10 sec and found 7 (there were actually 7 instances). Both pieces of software could probably have been quicker on say a new laptop as my laptop is fairly full but it would still mean that Agent Ransack performs the check 7.5 times more quickly.

By the way, my windows 10 laptop is away for repair so being curious as to whether Agent Ransack was quicker I loaded up the program on another laptop running Vista and it seemed to run perfectly ok on that although it is not said to run on Vista.

Installed & registered, then tried to search for a Publisher file (.pub), which is missing from the extensions list, so used filename.pub in the search box, but it doesn't search unless an extension is chosen! Uninstalled & reverted to easexp.com's xSearch, which is old, has no indexing or installation, & is VERY fast, plus it's totally FREE - & it just WORKS (even on latest Win10)!

Installed easily in Windows 7 computer. I must admit it is a bit confusing to register the software. It took me two tries. I thought the number that was included in the readme file was the serial number as well as the activation number and I had put it in both places. This didn't work. I then inserted the number included in the readme file on the first page of the registration and decided to use the "Online Registration" and after 60 seconds, the software was registered. Tried it out looking for a Word document contents and it found 9 instances. It would be nice if there was a help file to explain the use of the product or an online video of usage. I finally found information on it's use by going to the website and selecting Features. Thank you MSTech and GAOTD.

One thing to be aware of with this type of software is their limitations. Notice the file types that the program searches. If those suit the searches you need, then fine, this is a good deal. MS Office is not my go-to office suite, and I use several information managers, so this application would not work for me. I use File Locator Pro to search inside my files because searches everything.

Carl, good question (as well as the previous ones), it is important to know if the program works with diacritics and how - if diacritics can be used, disabled or ignored... Of course in English this has no sense, but in many other languages this is crucial in content searches (file names are without diacritics, so in "normal" search there is no problem)...

2. Is the program going online in any way? – That means: Who gets access to my data?

5. Does it search emails (outlook)?

Does v2.0 index the file CONTENTS or just the path?

Reply   |   Comment by dbareis  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

dbareis,

There is apparently no indexing of the file contents. MSTech Search as been running the background as a Task Bar icon for several hours now.

For me, a test search started a short while ago for three existing words/terms in a known file of a single file type (.html) on the single selected path "D:\" is going very slowly.

Windows' own Explorer search (of file names only) showed a total of 918 "*.html" files existing on my D: drive.

MSTech Search is currently at 1708 files and still scanning them (for content) after about 30 minutes thus far.

It seems to lurch along, sometimes stopping for several minutes on certain files of varying sizes; i.e., not all of which are especially big; and kept "re-visiting" (coming back to) one file in particular many times while scanning others.

It may be that it has trouble with the size of one folder/directory in particular (15,870+, not including sub-folders), or with really long file names as I often add details/tag words to most of my file names, just for searching later on this 64-bit OS.

Hey, it finally finished after about 40 minutes... and did not identify a single file (the test "target" in particular). Perhaps it has trouble matching search terms to formatted text?

Looking forward to the vast improvements of v2.0.

How can it be fast if it doesn't index?

Reply   |   Comment by dbareis  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Dear dbareis,
When, instead of opening the files one by one and check the content for your desired phrase by yourself (which is a time consuming process) the software will search in files content, furthermore quick access to the files preview will help you to save a considerable amount of your time and to check their contents quickly without the need of any other software (such as MS Word, MS Excel, PDF Viewer, etc.)

Mary Johnson, thank you for taking the time to respond to questions on behalf of the publisher. Of course searching files manually for a phrase is time consuming but I think what dbareis (and I) would like to know is if your software does anything above-and-beyond simply automating what a user would do versus pre-building an index or some other technique to improve search time. The embedded video says "effortlessly and instantly" but if you have gigabytes of files which have to be processed sequentially it's hard to see how it can be done instantly and certainly not any faster than the time to read each file. Any insight of what makes this software different would be greatly appreciated.

Reply   |   Comment by Zarf  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

Zarf, open file in e.g. Word, click for search, paste the search phraze, look if there is any occurence, close the file if not. And repeat it hundred or thousand times. Alternative: open MSTS and do the same work with a few clicks. It really helps - and indexing is a problem in the full-text search...

I use "Everything" sw for advanced searches, it has full-text search option too, but I didnt use it yet...
