Universal data cataloger ModusDoc was designed for cataloging diverse data: documents, e-books, audio books, movies, photos and other files, hyperlinks, programs, folders and notes in a database for the purpose of gaining quick and convenient access to them.
You can scan a folder or an entire disk. ModusDoc create tree groups according to the structure of folders on the disk and the relevant records - links to files.
You can add any documents to ModusDoc database, including e-books, audio books, movies, photos and other files, shortcuts or folders, by simply dragging them with the mouse. You can drag hyperlinks, selected text, e-mail messages - ModusDoc cataloger will automatically create the respective records (hyperlinks or notes). Moreover, you can add all objects located in a folder by simply selecting the folder in the dialog!
Documents and other files can be stored directly in ModusDoc database or the database can store the hyperlinks to these documents/files.
ModusDoc data cataloger allows creating an unlimited number of databases. Each database can have individual configuration: have hidden or rearranged columns, added new ones of various types (symbolic, textual, numeric, logical, date, date and time).
Each ModusDoc database consists of a GROUPS and a RECORDS table. Groups are presented on two tabs, Index (linear structure) and Tree (hierarchical structure); the program generates the tree automatically!
The filtering (selection) tools located immediately above the group tabs and above each field of the records table allows locating required data quickly and conveniently.
A group can contain documents and other files (both embedded and bound, as hyperlinks), shortcuts to the applications that created these documents, hyperlinks to Internet resources related to documents and programs presented in the group, as well as folder shortcuts and notes.

Paul, For windows 10 x64: look for cmd.exe in \ SysWOW64, right-click - select run from administrator, enter REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX
Or try running ModusDoc as administrator.

For every launch, I get the message ("Component 'mscomctl.ocx' not correctly registered: file is missing or invalid) even after doing the REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX (with administrator rights), and also after installing with administrator rights. It doesn't matter whether I start the md.exe with or without administrator rights.
Is there any reason you cannot re-compile the program for modern operating systems?

Yeah, I'm sure it is my fault or my system, like it is for all the other users that have the same problem, ... but then again, I updated and recompiled all my older programs so that they do not have the same problem that your old program does. I updated my programs because it is the responsible thing to do.
As far as "Why does not work in your case - you need to find out," well, not really. After reading the woes that others were having, I decided to test it out to see if it was as bad as others had commented or was it a mis-interpretation of a decent program. They were right. I just tested the software is all; I don't need it with or without the problems it has.
The issue is not just whether the program works (after the initial issue), but whether it can successfully get started without an issue. That will be your burden, and since after all these years, you have not updated it to not have the issue, I doubt that you are going to devote very much time in fixing it now.
Not only does it have this major startup issue, but the performance is terrible. It has design issues, missing features and functionality, indexing speed issues, and that alone is enough to scare anyone away. After an index scan, if a user wanted to back up that database, which might take up only 5 minutes, they might have to wait hours or days just to get to that point. When it gets that extreme, any user should realize they are using the wrong software.
I could never recommend this software to an Enterprise client, a small company, an individual, even if that individual were a kid wanting to some sort of cataloging functionality, which this program proposes to provide. The fact that you even still offer the program for sale, or even as a giveaway offer says a lot.

comes up on a win10 64 machine said "component MSCOMCTL.OCX not correctly registered..." fix this error. I go yes it then works. Go out of the program and restart it, same error.

Valery, that tip still didn't work, neither did 'run as an admin'. OK, the program does run if you click 'through' the error, but the error happens every time it is launched on Win10 Professional 64 bit. Any more ideas to remove it?

Valery, thanks for all these tips and comments - and, yes, it did reinstall as an admin - but I'm afraid that whatever I do, that dialog pops up every time I launch the app. It's not a show-stopper - just irritating, i guess. Once I 'OK' it away, the app launches and runs very well.

A tip: if you "catalog" a "big" disk with ModusDoc, it takes several minutes; if you save the database, close ModusDoc and afterwards re-launch ModusDoc, it will build the same huge database so you will have to wait again several minutes; instead, before closing ModusDoc, create a new "very small" catalog (starting on a very small almost empty folder)!

Instead you pretend "give your email address and the install link will be sent" these offers usually have a 24 hour offer limitation and giveaway NEVER-EVER sends the install link, and then the software offer expires.
This is deliberate fraud on your part. Informed users do not use 'facebook' as it is actual spyware, and giveaway punishes non-facebook users by preventing them acess to giveaway offered "free software" by mandating the software install link for non-facebook users will "only be sent by email" and then you guys NEVER-EVER send the link!

b.sullivan, I'm sorry but you're mistaken. In my case the vendor almost always send the link. On rare occasions I've had to ask twice. I wonder if your email software is interpreting the emails as spam and deleting them before you see them.

I haven't used Facebook to get the program link in years. I used to use gmx mail to get my GOTD programs, but that email stopped allowing me to get the link e-mails even though I still get the daily r-mails telling me about GOTD offers. I had to switch to gmail to get the link e-mail. I haven't had any issues since.

b.sullivan, I never use the social media option. Always use the same old AOL address that I have just for junk mail purposes. I'd say 98% of the time I get the link. Perhaps try a different email account?

b.sullivan, just from experience, GOTD is very lenient when it comes to temp mails, the only thing i can suggest is using a different email provider. Never had a problem with receiving download links on my temp mail and there are bunchloads of it.

It has a long way to go in the UX department. For example:
1. rollover bubble out (a user option (what? no user options) to turn on and off to expedite learning.
2. visual feedback while the DB is being created - (what is the program doing? as a % of whole or list of files)
3. Tutorials.
4. the ability to select index directories on multiple drives in one pass (Some docs are on C, some on the LAN-NAS, some are on removable devices)
5. index by subject, date and relationship (this invoice is associated with this PO, which is related to this check, which is related to this contract, which is related to this contractor. And the like.)
6. (not sure because it is still indexing.) but multiple flags and categories, for example this is for tax purposes, this is confidential this is privileged. but also flagged or labeled this was sent to lawyer w/date. Thus it describes how a file is used. In another example - an auto accident, there are many flags associations and people involved from the ins co to the lawyer so creating associations is a BIG deal, labels, colors etc can sort urgency.
Thanks for the test, it has some potential, but after 2 hours, it is still indexing so there is more once there is time to get into it.

Looks as though it might be useful although there's obviously a bit of a learning curve to overcome.
Unfortunately, the program doesn't seem to recognise the FreeNAS drives I have shared to my Windows system (as drives X: and Y:). This is of course where all the files I might want to catalogue are stored. Ah, well...
I don't have a CD/DVD drive attached to this PC but I mounted a disc image and incorporated that into a quickly set up database. I can envisage this being useful for optical disc cataloguing purposes but the main benefit would seem to be creating e.g. a database of Comedy and then being able to incorporate all desktop, optical disc, NAS(!!) and online files, sources for Lenny Bruce under this.
I'd certainly be happy to give it a whirl once the NAS issue is sorted.

An undo last operation button would be helpful
Scanning the contents even of an SSD partition of moderate size seems to take quite a long while
The program doesn't recognise items that it has already scanned in. Tackling this and being otherwise able to identify and remove duplicates would be useful.
I'd like to see more in the way of a button bar for operations and the potential to combine these as macros. There are buttons for various operations but these are scattered about the program window rather than being gathered together. Being able to place buttons to choice would be welcome
There is an array of filters but their use is not immediately apparent. Hopefully reference to the help file will clarify their purpose. Being able to save sets of filters for re-use would be welcome.
I crashed the program with an apparent operand error and then gave up.
Being able to watch key folders or to run regular or start-up updates would also be helpful.

A video would be useful. As it is, I am far from convinced it is likely to be useful to me -- while it looks "complicated'. And frankly, I for one do not have time to sort out the workings of a programme that I might not ever need.

This is useful to users who manage larger file systems on their PCs. A relational database system is incredibly useful for those who have TB's of data and need a quick way to index and manage that data.
You start by scanning all the files on your PC, which will build a quick index of everything available. By adding different indexing values, you can start to build relationships. For example, I can add a value field of "Client" to all files in the index and then start updating files with the client the file is in relation to. Moving forward, I can quickly filter down to a specific client and see all files in the system in relation to them.
It takes time to set up a working process, but this software seems to be pretty straight forward for those who are trying to set something simple up in terms of database management on a local system.
However- I will say that the initial scan of a drive is pretty long. Not really a fault of the devs, but just something to keep in mind if you're trying to load in huge systems. My main drive took around ten mins.

I have always had conceptual problems in understanding relational databases and have not really used them; this is probably my fault, not the software's fault.

Bob, well, the program comes with a lifetime license, so i don't see the issue here. As with most indexers, the initial process can take pretty long and it's obvious why but once the initial process is done with, all others won't take as much, i assume. And if there isn't much for you to do, just let it do all the work and do something else in the meantime.

hussein, It seems that once installed on your PC, if you copy the folder Modus... on USB key or an external disk and you use it on another PC, it works (I started but did not allow registry server to act then for the mscomctl.ocx to install to prevent a modification on the second PC. You should try.
