After reading about all the problems encountered when either trying to download, install and/or activate this program... as well as the problem of the missing SciFi 3.1 component; I decided not to even bother with it. I'd like to have a program like this, but all these problems and the hassle... well, it's just not worth it. By the way; My Operating System is Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. Please, will the powers that be, examine this program and fix it so that you can perhaps offer again later on.

Activated it at last. The activation code sent me was hidden in the Category section of my email. Using this software would surely be very interesting to me. Thank you very much.

After going thru the convoluted and distasteful process of providing contact info to sign up for an account, the complete install on Win 8.1 64b said quicktime would not work and must install again. So I tried on another (Win 10 64b) machine. Code already used! Ugh. Created another account and new dl. It says Sorry you already have one free activation. Can't even find the program.
The description of what we were to get was misleading, the requirements not honestly communicated and whole process tedious and annoying. GOTD has deteriorated massively, and I'd say driven away some of the contributors who made it worth even looking for potential downloads. (Ashraf, Karl, Giovanni).
How can I install on another computer when it doesn't fully work on the first one tried?

Hopefully my experience will help others.

I already had HitFilm Express on my computer. I had to deactivate it, create a new account, and then activate with the key I received from following the instructions from GiveAwayOfTheDay.

Everything activated smoothly and I now have access to the SciFi addon.

It would have been nice to be able to simply add the SciFi addon, but I do not yet own any of the other addons and so it was simply easier to deactivate the old and start a new account.

It is a wonderful program. If I had the cash available I would indeed purchase the upgrade to the full version. There is quite a nice selection of features built into the free basic version.

For the record... I am running Win 10 Pro.

I've been using HitFilm 3 Express (and HitFilm 2 Express before that) for a while, and I think it's the best free/low-cost video editor around - and I've tried a lot of them! The basics for multi-track timeline editing are all there, and there's no silly restrictions like not being able to input or output popular file types. The core functions are surprisingly powerful and easy to use, although as with any such package there's a bit of a learning curve. I would hardly begrudge them a program registration or offers to purchase add-on packs at extra cost. This is good software, and one of the top giveaways.

Aso I do not see in the download the sci-fi pack, not sure how to get that either, I hope since there was problems that they can be fixed before this free download has ended. I already told a few people about this even before I downloaded it.

To activate go to options, file/options/activation/account
On the pop up enter the licence code in the area that asks for serial number, provide your name or any name, and the email address you used to get the licence code. Press the button to complete the activation.
The program then wants you to close and reopen it. When you do, Hitfilm3 Express will be installed and activated, with the scifi pack.

For a free product, this is quite a powerful product for Windows users. I have to state "for Windows" as Linux has some extremely powerful professional grade video editing and compositing tools (Pitvi, Kdenlive, Cinelera, Blender, and of course, Lightworks). Whilst the free version is no Premier or Final Cut Pro, it is competent and ships with a decent number of effects, and not too many wipes and fades.

Fires up quickly, with a neat and uncluttered interface. However, the default UI is very much "windows 10" themed. The main program box is not resizeable, which can be problem when using dual monitors with an extended desktop as ALL file requestors and message boxes open in the center of the screen, where of course monitor bezels meet. Of course this doesn't obscure the dialogue boxes, but it is a major inconvenience.

Furthermore, the program blocks Windows' taskbar and start menu. This is the first time I have encountered this, and it is as annoying as hell. If I want to flip out of one program to check on another (i.e. checking mail for the activation key!), I have to take my hands off the mouse to ALT-TAB, or minimise HitFilm, do what I want to do, then re-size it.

I did say default. Now, HF doesn't utilise tooltips, which is a shame... because not every one may poke about the menus and see "EDIT | WORKSPACES | Classic". This uses the 'classic' Windows UI, which makes the interface resizable, although still blocks the taskbar.

Moving on to the software per-se, I had a quick play with some existing footage, and within the confines of the un-activated version put together a silly little montage of effects quite quickly. As it is not activated, I couldn't render (export) the film to anything other than a YouTube account. I'm interested in the "under the hood" rendering engine, as the only output formats appear to be YouTube, H.264, Image sequence, and AVI.

Why is this important? Because the appearance of the final video is hugely dependent upon encoding. The H.264 encoder appears to offer a target and maxbit rate (all options are locked as this format is unavailable in the trial), 1 pass VBR encoding (and presumably CBR and 2-pass VBR), and only AAC audio. AVI has no encoding options at all, other than colour depth (locked on 'RGB') and codec (locked on 'uncompressed').

Being unable to try these options, I can't comment further. I would be interested in knowing which encoding engines are used (I tend to use Mainconcept plug-ins for Premier, for example), or export uncompressed and use Mainconcept for HD, or Canopus Procoder for SD. Each to their own, of course.

Viewing from the perspective of an individual new to video editing and compositing, a quick plea. In your guides, include a couple of "in-your-face" how-to-do this tutorials. The most obvious example being "add to your video". Why? Because anyone new is going to pretty soon work out how to load their video, click and discover the effects, and then scratch their heads wondering how to do it, or get lost in the on-line guides.

Overall, after a quick play with the -still!!! argh, send me an activation code!!! - unactivated and unregistered software, I like it. And if I get a code (hint hint!!), will keep it on my older videostation for my daughter to learn on.

Looks to be a nice program worth learning and then upgrading as and when needed.. But as I can't yet get out of the Demo mode (see previous message) I can't save as a local 1080p either H.264 or .avi

For HitFilm my notebook does not appear to meet the minimum requirements: "Please install the latest driver update for your graphics card amd try running HitFilm again!"
My Medion Akoya P6630 (MD98560): graphics chip Intel GMA HD (driver Intel HD Graphics Version 8.15.10.2622). As a separate graphics processor, however, the more powerful, NVidia GeForce GT 540M model is installed (Version 9.18.13.3221).

To be honest, this just seems to be a kind of program template, with 14 empty 'slots', for which you can purchase modules - to kick off and whet your appetite, Hitfilm are giving away their 'Sci-fi adventure' module.

After activating (mandatory creation of a secure account with e-mail address necessary), I then see a whole column of 14 possible modules which seem to be necessary before this 'program template' can really be of any use, but all except for the one module that they gave us today has to be purchased.

When I pressed on the 'User Guide' button, it took me to their website, where the 'User Guide' is shown a few lines at a time, in a window no bigger (and probably actually smaller) than the one to write a comment here on GOTD, and consists of this which I now copy and paste:

Learning HitFilm 3 Express

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HitFilm 3 Express is a unique combination of non-linear editor and compositor. There are many resources available for learning how to use the software.

Expanding HitFilm 3 Express

You are using the free version of HitFilm 3. This includes the core editing and 3D compositing tools and is still hugely powerful. If you need more functionality, such as advanced particle simulation, 3D model import or additional effects, you can purchase additional component packs in the HitFilm.com Store.

Some features and effects in this user guide refer to functionality requiring one or more packs. This will be noted as appropriate.

HitFilm 3 Pro contains all component features plus exclusive effects which aren't available for Express. Find out more here.

The user guide

This user guide provides an overview of all of HitFilm 3 Express's features.

If you would prefer to read this manual on your tablet or would like to print a paper copy, you can download a PDF version here.

Video tutorials

There are over 40 hours of free video tutorials available. You can find the tutorials organized into useful categories over on the HitFilm.com website.

If you're new to HitFilm or filmmaking we highly recommend watching Project One.

So, if this 'User Guide' is to be believed, this program is the free version anyway, so what they are actually giving away is the 'Sci-fi Adventure Pack'?

Installed on win8-64 fine. Jumped through the hoops and got the key fine & speedy.

However, I uninstalled it as soon it said I had to create an account with HitFilm directly - even before I could copy my reg info in.

I've nothing to hide but i've never been asked to create an account especially when i'm already in receipt of a valid key. For me, it's just another company who can sell your details on - no thanks. Thumbs down and cleaner running on my system now as we speak....

The reason HitFilm asks you to create an account is so that you can always be in receipt of a valid key. If your laptop was to break or you wanted to put the software on another computer, you can download the installer and access your code from your account on hitfilm.com at any time.
You can also use your hitfilm.com account to request support if you have any issues. I can also assure you we have never sold our users details on to anyone.
However we do appreciate your viewpoint so thank you for sharing.

downloaded and activated perfectly on Windows 7 SP1.
I was specifically interested in the Sci Fi pack and the light sabres... but I see it says that I also need the 'Destruction Pack', too, for only an additional $21 then I can follow along on their instruction video.
If the Sci Fi pack is simply an underhanded marketing ploy to get me to buy into their system then I will uninstall real quick and just continue using my various video editors downloaded here that never require anything more of me (thus the 'Give Away' in the title of our favourite website). Gup

The sci-fi pack includes the lightsword/lightsaber effect, so you get that completely free. There are other effects that you can purchase for Express including the lightning effect (which I believe is the one you're referring to).
If you were specifically interested in the lightsaber effect then you don't need anything but this GOTD offer. The tutorial on how to make lightsaber effects is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd5BdFEsPzA
You absolutely do not need to buy anything additional if you don't want to, as Express is a powerful editing & VFX software in its own right. Hope that helps.

My complete apologies, then. I guess I followed a link provided on your site to a tutorial on Youtube and got carried away watching a totally different pack in use. It was the 'fiery portal' I was watching that required two packs, one being 'Destruction'. Is that correct? My memory is slowly being sucked from me by this evil web hub perched beside me.

NOT worth the confusing scenario of getting the registration code. I apparently signed up for the free version and not the one given away here. Now when I attempt to register the free PAIDED version given here it tells me I already have a free version. Uninstalled this program. No thanks for any program that is that confusing...

Downloaded and installed using Win7 64 bit. I did not use the request to put a post on my FB but used the option below that to just send me via e-mail the download link. The registrations was confusing because the readme.txt said to go to a website and fill in info after which they would send the license via e-mail and then to go to the "Register and Activate" menu. There was no "Register and Activate" menu but when I started the program it had a pop up box with an "activate" option. That required I create a usercode on their website and in that process had a place to put in the license code. Doing that seemed to get me registered. Also the install did not create a desktop icon so I had to create it myself.

In looking at the program it has a lot of options but requires one to buy various sets of options starting at $8.95 each. I have not figured out what can be done without buying more options. Also their website has a free version of the program available. It is not clear what the GAOTD version can do that the free version cannot. Maybe the "Sci-Fi Adventure pack" is not included with the free version but I don't see a definition of what that pack does. The program and their web site give links to a lot of YouTube videos showing how to do things. Apparently there are a lot of options for green screening and more complex layer combining. Again it is not clear how much of that can be done without buying more packs. This may be a valuable program but it will take some experimenting to see what can be done with the GAOTW version.

The Sci-fi adventure pack is the bonus that you get with this GAOTD offer. The Sci-fi adventure pack is worth $24.99 and contains a number of visual effects that you can use in your short films/home movies, such as animated laser effects, lightsabers (lightswords), a sci-fi title crawl and a hyperdrive effect.
We do have additional add-ons which are available for a price, and HitFilm 4 Pro which is our professional level software, but those are entirely your choice. HitFilm 3 Express is still powerful editing software on its own, and this GAOTD offer affords you the option to create some fantastic effects for free.

With a super fast look at the program, I must say that I like it. The overall look is just really appealing to me.
Though a disappointment is that it doesn't seem to be able to edit compressed mp4 very well.
And as an owner of Adobe Premiere Elements, I will probably stick to using Adobe for now.
But I might sometimes use it for effects that the Adobe can't do very well.

In that case, the Sci-fi adventure pack effects should be in the effects toolbar. In a new project, next to the media panel you'll see a tab for Effects where you can search for them.

If you have the time, read some of the blog postings at hitfilm.com -- they've done a nice job, & reading a few gives you a fair sense of just what Hitfilm does, & where it fits in the landscape of audio/video software.

Reading the blog about this Sci-Fi edition, it mentions how teens making fan films [using a forerunner to Hitfilm] went on to become pros. Video software in general has gone a similar route. Cheesy, amateurish FX & animation, while still present in some software, have given way to tools allowing a fantastic amount of artistic expression. Unfortunately however, the price & learning curve can be just as fantastic. Among other things Hitfilm aims to be a bridge -- whether you want to just do a bit more with your video, or if you want to show the world that you've got what it takes to join the ranks of top pros, Hitfilm can let you mimic some pretty high end work on a very restricted budget when it comes to time, learning, & money.

Think of Hitfilm Express as the ala carte version -- Hitfilm Pro as the full meal. You can use Hitfilm Express as-is of course, or buy one or more add-ons to expand your capabilities. Hitfilm Pro OTOH might seem expensive, until you start pricing what it would cost for the same capabilities otherwise. If you can afford it, for what you get it's a pretty decent value. There's a lot of people doing Indie work with digital cameras [a Nikon may seem expensive for a still camera, but downright cheap compared to video cameras], & Hitfilm may round out your bedroom or garage production house pretty well.

That said, there are cheaper apps available [compared to HF Express & a few add-ons], particularly if you catch a good sale -- Corel's VideoStudio Pro X8 Ultimate was $29 at Amazon a few times over the holidays, & I managed to pick up an earlier version a year or two back for $20 bundled with a couple of other useful apps. There are more technical or technician oriented video editors, while IMHO Hitfilm is oriented more to film making. And if you invest the time & effort in really learning apps like [the open source] Blender, and I'm not talking mere weeks or months, you might be able to do some 3D-based work that's better than what you'd get out of Hitfilm.

And of course with today's GOTD you get a couple of neat toys to play with.

Well, this is odd...I must have gotten this as a previous giveaway, because when I install it and open it, it's already registered (to a different email address). Tried to uninstall/reinstall, then deactivate/activate, but I can't get the Sci Fi adventure pack. Oh well.

It says 3D Compositing.

What object formats are supported for import?
FBX, OBJ, LightWave ?

Also, how to import them? I can't see any import dialog option to import 3D models.

Rock 1986, I think we already had hundreds, heading towards thousands of members of the GOCC (The Greater Oklahoma Commodore Club) with 5 chapters. Most of us had VIC-20's with homemade expansion cards to be able to program anything valuable. We had to have a refrigerator at our meetings to cool the power supplies! Prime space was close to the fridge. There were CBM owners, users of CPM, Adam owners... Tinker Air Force Base provided engineering (they didn't know that they did) for modifications of 1541 disk drives to make "flaming ram towers" allowing us to download machine code to the drive itself. Those were the days! But we didn't have the computing power in the whole large hall of our annual meetings to do what the free part of this program can do. It amazes us (old timers) what they give away for free. I need a cheap way to do video editing that doesn't take years to learn. It would be nice if the company could make a modified instructional video of what just today's give away can do. Get us started using your product and maybe we will grow into buyers of the other packages as we grow in our needs. Thanks for the free effects pack. Thanks to GAOD.

You are absolutely correct my friend. My age (74) got the best of me on that post. In 1986 I lived in a small town of less than 5,000 and I do remember 1 friend had one of those old Commodores. However, it wasn't a real "PC" as we refer to them these days. No internet and more of a toy for us nerds. Anyway, by 1990 I had moved to a large city and bought my first real PC. It had no hard drive. It had 2 of the large floppy disc drives, 1 for the program disc, the other for saving files, etc. Later that same year, I started my own BBS service if you remember what those were. There were over 100 in the city I now lived and mine was by far the most popular. Then, one day someone uploaded a file to my BBS called "Netscape". I had no idea what it was at first but after going out and buying a modem I was now connected to the Internet and a whole new world opened to me. I am long retired now but still the IT guy for my community and rely totally on my PC to manage my day to day affairs and would be really lost without my smartphone. So.... thanks for bringing me back to reality and I enjoyed your post.... Rock

Downloaded and installed on win 10 64 with no problems. Does not create an icon on the desktop, however it does appear on the "Lately Added" list of the start menu, so coping the link to the desktop is easy enough.
Subscription procedure was a bit cumbersome, but took less than 5 minutes. After activation, dozens of "disabled features" urge you to go to the "Hitfilm online store" to buy these features. Even the so called "Starter pack" seems not included in the licensed version.
User interface is complected, crammed with tiny icons and microscopic font. Couldn't find how to change interface colors and sizes.
I Loaded a low - quality, 3 minute MP4 video clip (about 16.6 mb) and added some effects for testing (sharpen, color correction and the like). Exported as h.264 file. Export took about 8 and a half minutes. Output file (variable bitrate, 1 pass, 1280 X 720) was 213 mb, with slight but noticeable changes made by the effects applied.
Application seems serious, complicated and requires much learning.
has interesting chroma keying options.
Thanks to its interesting features, despite its not so user friendly appearance, I think I'll keep it for now, for further testing,
Thank you, GOTD!

Hitfilm Express is free -- follow the link up top to the Hitfilm Express page & you can get it 24/7 -- but everything else is ala carte, so you buy just what you want/need. What makes today's GOTD notable is the included Sci-Fi pack.

I reinstalled it, even deactivated the license, but when I press the "Register&Activate" button, there is no option to enter a new key. It just activates my old one, which doesn't contain the Sci-fi pack, automatically.
A text field with key to enter is only available if I choose to create a new account, which isn't a good thing.

On Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro Laptop - Windows 10, the screen options of the software are barely readable (the text is so small) because of the high resolution screen of the laptop. Shame it doesn't resize or re-scale to accommodate high resolution screens on modern laptops.

My default resolution of the screen is 3200 x 1800.

Using Windows Magnifier might help as a last solution to enlarge areas of the screen.

I suggest Googling the search phrase "Fix Windows 10 DPI Scaling" to ensure your current settings are at default or perhaps changing the magnification to 200%, which is the Lenovo preset for Windows 8.1 (not sure about Win10).

In whatever serves as a Control Panel in Win 10 should have the option of adjusting your screen resolution to something much more reasonable.

It does include the Sci-fi pack. If you can't see it, please ensure that you've activated. An activation window should pop up when you fire it up and ask you to enter either your serial code or your account details. So you have to -
1 Install it
2 Get the code
3 Put in the code
4 Create an account
5 Uninstall it
6 Download another version
7 Install the new version...

Forget it.

No need to download another version because it's the same version. That webpage can use a better caption, but the link is provided for reinstall purposes.

That's a good thing, because if you ever need to reinstall it, your online account code will reactivate it.

I was hesitant about creating an online account, but they are very transparent in their rules and policies plus their is only 1 single newsletter to opt-in or opt-out of.

There's also a ton of YouTube videos direct from this software creator, so reconsider if you can overlook the DRM Account requirements.

Maybe this page will help?
hitfilm.com/faqs/view/18

Hitfilm is a video Non-Linear Editor [NLE for short]. 1) it lets you fix &/or enhance video the same way you would a still image in an image editor. 2) it lets you reorder, trim, splice, overlay, & add FX to your video clips.

How good is it? Well, it depends on your criteria. A lot of video editing work is more technician oriented, e.g. putting together a bunch of product promo shots. I think there are more production & tech oriented NLEs. Likewise there are apps that focus more on compositing, e.g. creating the graphics video you see on news programs or shopping channels. Hitfilm, as the name implies, is more about film making, & in that respect it does pretty well.

What should this help?
Yes, I had (mp4 and avi). If the format will not be supported the program would´nt show/load it.
But the files will be imported but can not start to play or play without sound. Is the reason I use an external second soundcard? But find no settings for output-options...
However - deinstall because I don´t like it. I don´t need a tool that always is connected with internet.

Hi Mike - you don't have to always be connected to the internet to run HitFilm 3 Express. You simply need it to download the installer and then to activate from your hitfilm.com account (and for any further updates later in the year). Otherwise, you can use HitFilm completely offline.
I'd encourage you to contact support as there may be a simple reason why mp4 and avi is not appearing, and we can fix that for you quickly: hitfilm.com/questions/submit

The part that was left out was you need to create an online account with your email address to activate the product.

What I like about this software is the power to have lots of Special FX that are noob friendly with a nice software layout. This one is a keeper.
