Hi All,

Some introduction that may help:

• You can find a lot of information and already answered questions here in old comments, on HippoEDIT forum, and on HippoEDIT wiki (for example FAQ page)
• GAOTD HippoEDIT edition can NOT run portable.
• If you are looking for some feature or a syntax highlighting for your favorite language, but cannot find it the menu, check available plugins: Tools->Options->Plugins (select needed in the list), available syntaxes on Tools->Options->Syntax Settings (check needed) or use Update Manager Help->Check for Updates. The easiest way to get needed syntax schema is to just open a source code file in the corresponding language - HippoEDIT will check by itself if syntax schema for it is available online and will download it for you.
• Comparison of the HippoEDIT with other text editors can be found in old comments or on forum (not really up-to-date but better than nothing ;) )
• HippoEDIT has only English user interface.
• The license you get here with GAOTD special offer is a FULL license. There are no limitations or differences to standard HippoEDIT license.
• If you bought HippoEDIT and did not get the license in 24 hours, maybe license email is caught by your spam filter. If you are sure it is not, leave a comment of forum, and I will send you the license in private message

Best regards,
Alex.

TK, it was not easy to get what you meant, without screenshot ;)
OK, as I got you, you complain is about displaying of the XML element "name" in Navigation Bar. The left part, navigation combo, displays only first attribute, but not the rest. However, the description of the element (edit field on the right side) shows all attributes, when you put the cursor on an element in the text.

This is by intention: because of the limited width of navigation combo, it can not show all attributes, so only first is taken.

If you do not like it, you can modify XML syntax schema (file xml_spec.xml in user directory), and extend the definition of Label to take into account everything, like it is done for description field.
Basically, such definition of Label will do the job:

Documentation about Labels you can find on wiki: http://wiki.hippoedit.com/syntax/labels.

Best regards,
Alex.

Alex from HippoEDIT,

somehow the XML for the label was lost (hope now it will work) - just exchange of the attribute "name" by content of the attribute "descr" -> \1 \2\3 :

Great program. It's a toss up as to whether I prefer this, or notepad++. Of course, the later is open-source, or as Bill Gates put it, communism.

I installed the bought version portably on my computer to check it out, then tried to move it to my flash drive and was surprised when it wasn't registered anymore.

But, then I found on the website:
"It is not possible to copy license.dat from one PC to another one. You need to re-register (enter your license key) in the second machine too.
The only way to avoid this, if you initially install HE on a flash (remote) drive. In this case, license.dat would be bound to it."

So there you go--if you want to use the bought version portably, install/register it on the device (including flash drive) where you want to use it.
Makes sense.

Alex--Though I set 'Portable' in the installer, I was surprised to still see "false" in hippoedit.config
I changed it manually to 'true'; was that correct of me to do?
Why wasn't that already set?

this is actually a little bit different flag, controlling if *.tmp files shall be used or not.

So what's disabled or downgraded in this "special edition"? You, Alex, yourself admit this GOTD is a "special edition" so what's "special" about it? Thanks.

Sorry - not working on my Win 10 Pro 64-bit. It opened once, but now when I click on the desktop shortcut, I only get the web page notice that this is a special GAOTD offer only (web link at bottom of this comment)

ALSO, in Win 10, I have this error message now 12 times:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\HippoEDIT\MFC80U.DLL". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50608.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

The webpage that is opening is:

It is now also NOT working on my XP SP3 PC. Same problem - instead of opening the program, the shortcut only opens the web page
http://www.hippoedit.com/special_offer_details.php?offer=GiveAwayOfTheDay&ver=1.60.31&source=2&utm_nooverride=1

These are two different PCs, with two different OSes, so there seems to be a problem.

After some fussing, my remaining problem is on the Win 10 Pro 64-bit, where I continue to get the Event Viewer error

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\HippoEDIT\MFC80U.DLL". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50608.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

Please advise, and thanks.

Hi glnz,

sorry for the delay with reply. This is a known issue with not properly installed MFC redistributables.
Please check this wiki page for details of how to get it running: http://wiki.hippoedit.com/faq/startup-crash

Best regards,
Alex

Solution - install C++ 2005 Redistributable MFC Security Update, per Alex's instructions on the HippoEdit forum.
Thanks, Alex!

I bought this a couple years ago a few days after a giveaway here. Alex don't forget to keep the option to buy up for a week or two for those who want the full version with updates. I have been happy that I spent the money to support their efforts and have had free updates since. They have a nice friendly user forum and they are always ready to answer questions by email. You won't be sorry if you buy the full version assuming you truly have a need for a top notch text editor.

A useful editor if you like to view or edit source code or HTML, viewing and searching binary files is also well covered.
In source code the ability to expand or collapse functions helps to give a good idea of program flow.
A handy program for geeks.

I have dozens of editors but only a mere handful have great code completion. This software has very, very poor code completion (tried editing php5, php7, python). On the other hand, it handles code folding very well, e.g. can fold python triple single/double quotes while other editors (like scite) need an ugly trick (extra indendation). I reckon this GOTD will sit idle until I re-install Windows or make room on C:. I cannot use it as code viewer because it obviously doesn't have a read-only mode (I wrote my own anyway)... As I'm writing this, I remember I already tried this software but got rid of it most probably for the very same reasons. Bottom line: I'll exchange all the bells and whistles for code completion and a run/execute button.

Reply   |   Comment by papin  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Hi papin,

as you probably remember from my comments to you with previous promotion ;) if you would like to have perfect code completion - you shall use dedicated IDE. PHPStorm, PyCharm or something similar.
HippoEDIT is a generic editor for text, scripts, fast preview etc.

It is difficult to get what you meant under "read-only" mode... If you meant Windows File Previewers feature, to be available as a shell extension for Windows Explorer - the feature comes with HippoEDIT 2.0. Registered users can already try the alpha from the forum. If this just to be able to work in read-only mode inside the editor - is is already in (menu File -> Read-Only).

Adding "Run/Execute" button is 1 minute of effort, by creating a tool in HippoEDIT and setting it to be displayed on the toolbar by the flag. See details on wiki: http://wiki.hippoedit.com/tools/start

Best regards,
Alex.

Is it possible to sort text?

Alex from HippoEDIT,
Thanks.

After reading your comparisons, I'm trying to decide whether to switch from TextPad.

It appears that the sort has to start in column 1. There's no way to sort based on the contents of columns 8-10, for example.

The bigger roadblock is the EULA. HippoEDIT allows installation on one desktop and one laptop. TextPad's allows "Multiple Client Devices. A licensed user is also granted a license to install the Software on more than one Client Device, for the sole use of that user. " Over the years, I've acquired many laptops. The one I use at any particular moment depends on whether the need is greatest for size, weight, speed, disk storage,..., HippoEDIT's EULA may be the deal breaker for me.

It looks like a very nice editor, though.

Reply   |   Comment by JerryWithaJ  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Yes, the sorting is only possible from line start, you can not sort by several keys as in TextPad. Potentially something like TextPad has can be added as script plugin, but I do not promise that.

HippoEDIT license is user bound. EULA is outdated :) It is OK if you use it on all your computers.

Reply   |   Comment by Alex from HippoEDIT  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

JerryWithaJ,
I asked a somewhat similar question to yours, but related to portable use (in which case, of course, HippoEDIT may be running (non-simultaneously) on several different machines).

Alex's response to me, which you can see on this page, is that "as I already answered - HippoEDIT has a user bound license." So it would seem that you also are in the clear on your intended use.

But of course, I am not the developer, nor some "expert"...

Reply   |   Comment by PortablesFan  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

PortablesFan, Thanks! Some programs ARE fanatical about it. They monitor installations online and when the maximum number of is reached, that's it. It may not sort as flexibly as I'd like, but it looks good, otherwise. With the license today at only $15, it seems well worth the gamble if it is, indeed, a user bound license.

This is a great product !
I've buyed for my company this software license in a previous GiveAway.
With the purchased license you have lifetime upgrade and these are very frequent
Previously we used UltraEdit nothing is missing in HippoEdit.
