I've used the incomparable real Goldwave program ( http://www.goldwave.com ) for years. That program just can't be beat. I take offense at Gold Media's choice of program title. I'm sure it wasn't accidental.
That being said, this program does one thing that the genuine article doesn't: it can shift the playback speed of a file without changing pitch. With Goldwave, the two are married.
And to the Gold Wave user who asked about vocal elimination, try this:
1. Select only one channel of a stereo file. Left or right, doesn't matter which.
2. From the Effects menu, choose Invert.
3. Select both channels.
4. From the Effects menu, select Stereo Mix. Set each "new channel" mix as 50 percent left, 50 percent right.
The vocals will be (mostly) gone.

I was having some problems with slow operations in Gold Wave Editor Pro and emailed support. Here is the response I got:
> I tried Gold Wave Editor through the Giveaway of the Day program and
> while your program has nice features and is easy to use there is a
> problem that makes it not useful for me...
The "Gold Wave Editor Pro" software is developed by a different company that is using the GoldWave trademark without permission.
The real GoldWave software can be downloaded here:
http://www.goldwave.com/release.php
I believe you'll find it significantly better than the other software you tried. It deletes sections of audio instantly regardless of how long the recording is.

What is this program? It is not the powerful Goldwave that I've used in the past. The current version of Goldwave is 5.52. This program is version 10.2.2 and does not have many of the features of Goldwave 5.52. I couldn't even find an equalizer.
The real Goldwave is at http://www.goldwave.com/
This is a scam.

DON'T BE DECEIVED BY THE NAME.
Its not GoldWave, Its Gold Wave Editor Pro(with spaces)
1. First of all this program isn't the GoldWave everyone knows and loves located at http://www.goldwave.com/.
Gold Wave Editor Pro is an entirely different product all together from http://www.goldwaveeditor.com.
2. Gold Wave Editor Pro biggest flaw is that it doesn't have an on-the-fly Pitch, Volume, or Balance control.
3. NO VOLUME CONTROL WHATSOEVER. If there is, then I can't find it in this "simple to use" program.
4. A lot of the audio editing features are VERY slow. For example previewing a pitch change takes almost an entire minute.
5. This program has a lot of features, but not a whole lot of useful ones. It has a Flanger but it doesn't even have a basic equalizer.

Just a postmortem, so to speak, but I've uninstalled this app after loading and a quick test. Something as sophisticated as this should also capture audio from web and streaming applications. Even the simple Audio Recorder, offered several times on GOTD in the past, accomplished this. Frankly, the majority of audio I want to capture and edit comes from the web. So this App does me absolutely no good.

Gold Wave Editor Pro has a striking resemblance to Advanced Audio Recorder 6.0.2 that was offered by GAOTD on March 25, 2009. The Audio Burner and Audio Grabber Wizards of both are identical. The Help Contents are virtually the same, and so are many other features. Perhaps they have a joint marketing arrangement. None of this seems to distract from the acceptable performance of the products, but it does create doubt as to who is on first.

you clicked th wrong link to download the product. you need to click "proceed to download page" and then click the link with the name of the product, namely "gold wave editor pro", which is located just above the comments. "AVS audio editor" is a trial they advertise for ever day here, and is a flash advertisement, and is not the Giveaway of the Day. Just thought you'd like to know. That giveaway wasn't the real goldwave anyway. www.goldwave.com

It installed some codecs that were slow compared to what I was using and gave my system occasional glitches during high-def PVR playback (TV recordings and movies). I really hate programs that install codecs without telling the user and giving them an option. BAD PRACTICE. I went to a lot of trouble to find low overhead, quality codecs and tuning my system to use them. Glad that I had a backup.

Does anyone Know How to Seprate the Singer Sound from the Music with this Software …
Comment by Omar
yes invert the left or right channel only and mix or convert the result to mono.
if invert is not an effect on the software, convert the phase of the left or right channel to 180 deg and mix to mono.
if the mono mix is only playing on one channel (speaker) when done,
convert the mono mix to stereo so both the left and right channels
are the same recording.
since the phase of one channel is offset by 180 deg or inverted then combined to mono anything that is the same in the stereo image will be removed and anything that is different will be left in the recording.
this method only works well if only the vocals are in the center of the recording and the other instruments are "stereo" which is why the echo effects of the vocals are left in the recording.
mp3's will leave artifacts in the recording which is why a wav file or cd,tape, vinyl rip works the best.
look up "vocal cancel" in wiki or a search engine for more info.

re: post #20: I tried the software from avs4you and PC Tools Spyware Doctor lit up on it as dangerous. I should have paid attention; the stuff crashed my system and required a Safe Mode restart, System restore, a2 scan and quarantine. avs4you is trialware anyway and to be avoided.

I am a little confused here, supposedly this is a totally different company using a similar product name, but so far I have found GoldWaveEditor Inc referenced in section 2 of the EULA for this product????? It goes on like this throughout the licence, but at the top it does say GoldMedia Co.
It is as follows:
"2. GRANT OF LICENSE.
The SOFTWARE PRODUCT is licensed as follows:
* Installation and Use. GoldWaveEditor Inc grants you the right to install and use the Unregistered version of the SOFTWARE in unlimited number of computers. One copy of the UNLIMITED version of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT may either be used by a single person who uses the software personally on one or more computers, or installed on a single workstation used non-simultaneously by multiple people, but not both. You may access the UNLIMITED version of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT through a network, provided that you have obtained individual licenses for the software covering all workstations that will access the software through the network. For instance, if five different workstations will access the SOFTWARE PRODUCT on the network, each workstation must have its own license, regardless of whether they use the SOFTWARE PRODUCT at different times or concurrently. Site licenses of the software may be obtained from GoldWaveEditor Inc, which cover each workstation at one location."
Is it the same company then?

Great piece of software. Thanks alot. I had Audacity before, and didn't like it. Its recording feature wasn't that good. And neither is this programs, but everything else about it is great, and easy to use and understand.

Pretty tough to beat a Pro-grade apps like Sound Forge, which allows one to use Direct X plugins, but this one is pretty good for what it does. The feature set is a bit more extensive than Audacity at this point.
On feature I really like, as a musician, is the ability to either change pitch or speed independently. Great when I need to practice a section of a song or transpose a melody or solo! The speed change works surprisingly well.

I installed it and now I am sorry that I did.
It installed 13 DLL codecs into Windows system directory, most of which were unique, but one of which was a standard Microsoft C compiler dll. idiotic.
I checked to see what version of LAME it uses. Naturally enough, there is no indicator or credit given in the program about what version it uses. So I looked inside the binary of lame_enc.dll and find that they are using version "LAME3.93" . That version was published in November of 2002 - 6 and one half YEARS ago. The current version of LAME is release v3.98.2 (September 2008).
Tested and find that it does have multiple formats it can save, but in a totally weird manner, you do not specify any format encoding settings until AFTER you have named and saved the file. Totally bad design there.
Very sloppy.
I am sure they have devoted a lot of work to this.
But the shortcomings of installation process, almost 7 year old version of LAME and way it saves are just too many strikes against it.
Vert Sad.

It opened at the end of setup with a 30 day trial message but came up with the registration widow which accepted the licence name and key. I reopened and all seems fine. I haven't the time to try it out today but hope it will go well.

After reading most of the comments I am leary of installing this.
A) It seems rather sneaky for a new company to pick a name almost exactly the same as a years-old existing company with similar type of audio software already.
Todays's GOTD is Gold Wave = GoldMedia Co.Ltd at www.goldwaveeditor.com url.
Which is not the same as Goldwave audio products from GoldWave Inc. at www.goldwave.com url (they've been around since mid 1990's).
(Nor is it same as www.goldmedia.co.uk...)
Safe to assume they new there was an already existing audio software company called "GoldWave" when they picked their name of "Gold Wave".
B) Although I usually use an installation monitor program when I test out new software, I do not like the idea of another app dropping a bunch of audio and related DLLs into my system directory, possibly overwriting (and thus deleting) my existing DLLs. Or presenting conflicts, since their DLLs are in the system directory. If installation programs made backup copies of DLLs that they replaced, that would be recoverable, but usually overwriting immediately deletes without use of recycle bin.
Does anyone know if this app installer overwrites common existing DLLs, or does it install uniquely named own DLLs?
C) Comment that it uses older MP3 codec is disappointing if accurate.
I'm on the fence.
If I knew what I needed to back up before the install, I might try it out.
(I know, force a system Restore point before installation... but even Restore points cannot guarantee all DLLs would be recoverable...)

@18 wrote >>Cons:
Records only to WAV intially as far as I can tell ( a deal breaker for me.)<<
As far as I am aware, all multiple track stand alone digital recording studios produce tracks in .wav format for individual track editing, mixing and final mastering. The same appears to be true for software based recording/mixing/mastering through sound cards. THEN the final master can be converted from .wav to other formats.
I read somewhere long ago that there is a good reason for using .wav format for recording studio work but I forgot why. I see now that post number 90 explains why: .wav is an uncompressed format. So this is not a 'con' or deficit in the software, but rather an industry standard.
I'm a musician songwriter/composer with a multitrack digital home studio and I will be very happy to try out this software for computer based editing. Professional and very expensive recording studio software can be incredibly complex and more suited for those whose focus is recording studio engineering. . For a basic musician songwriter looking for something easier to use, this software looks very good to me.
(As mentioned in other posts- many other uses aside from recording studio work)
Thank you very much for this offering, greatly appreciated!

I used the "Other" Goldwave around 13 years ago and I really liked it. I used it for a lot of projects and was very happy with it. Then they started charging for it, so I switched over to Audacity. There's something I just don't like about Audacity's layout. I also don't like the selection tool for editing. I was very pleased when I installed today's Goldwave and discovered it to be very much like the old Goldwave.

I used Gold Wave way back with version 1 I think. Wn98 or ME . I do not remember why I quit using it. I went to Sound Editor pro and Audacity then. For some reason I never kept Gold Wave Editor. It wasn't because I had any problems with it. It just faded away.
This installed and ran perfect on y Win 7 RC and it sees my external Creative USB sound device. I had to wait for a new version of Audacity before it could see it. And Sound Edit Pro (which I still use a lot) could see the USB sound device also.
This version of Gold Wave Editor Pro is as good as it always has been and I have already ripped a CD and recorded songs off of my old Three Dog Night casssette tapes with it this morning. The recorder GUI is a little different but will be easy to get used to. A THUMBS UP for me today. Thank you GAOTD and Goldmedia for bringing it back to my attention.

#83 Dan: The good freeware program MP3Gain will probably solve your problem. It analyzes a complete CD, a folder with music files or a number of files and then increases or reduces the volume of the different files - and you end up with a music collection with limited volume variations between the melodies. (Within the melodies, there will still be great volume variations.) I've used it for years, it's excellent for creating music for parties - you don't need to adjust the volume all the time.

I used the regular version of this years ago, and found it very easy to work with. This version (the Pro version) is also very good. It installed perfectly on WinXP MCE with SP3 (Cut and Paste the registration from the Readme.txt file and you should have no problems). The only problem I experienced was an error when trying to open a WMA file.
I do a lot of copying from LP albums to CD's, many of which have a lot of pops and clicks, and usually need some major sound expansion and tone tweaking. For this, I use the old (now unavailable) CoolEditPro, which does an excellent job when major work is required. I found that this software isn't quite up to the task in that respect, but is more than adequate for most recording and editing purposes. Nice program Gold Wave... and thanks GAOTD.

OK tested this, it does do basic and some other stuff, but it doesn't find ALL the conversion codex, like saving a MP3 to a mpeg layer 3 wav which compresses a large MP3 to a pretty small wav file.
The only selections for the wav here is a few bit rare adjustments. There are a couple other conversions available, like .ogg and .wma. When you select save as it gives you a few options to change these settings.
MY regular GoldWave WILL convert to a mpeg layer 3 WAV file any MP3.
I may mess around with it some more, but I'll be sticking with my REAL GoldWave(5.52) for most of my conversions. Its still a basic capable piece of software for most.

This is NOT the wonderful Goldwave software from GoldWave® Inc. that many of you may be familiar with. This is Gold Wave (notice the space between Gold and Wave) from an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT company, GoldMedia Co. Ltd. I tried it and it is nowhere near as easy to use or as powerful as Goldwave, which I have been using with great satisfaction for years. I am NOT an employee of or in any way affiliated with GoldWave® Inc. I just love their Goldwave product. They also makes Multiquence multitrack recording software which is fantastic.
