Numerous users have reported that the activation for this product does not work (see forums) and no one seems to care. After a month, there is a message which says "this key has already been registered using a different Skype ID".

I realize that it is free and you get what you pay for but c'mon - admit there is a problem and fix it already.

#'s 27, 28 and others. Hope you are still listening...just saw your comments & just figured it out myself. Open G-recorder, then look for the Grecorder "tray icon" envelope image. It should be on the Start toolbar to the right by the time. Right-click on it and select "License key..." A box will open for you to enter the key, then click on "Apply" The software will now indicate a "Full" license instead of saying "Trial"

Is nothing private any more? I've never used Skype, or any other internet based phone service. Now, if I ever DO receive a call on Skype, I hope I remember to hang up rather than chance having my words (unimportant to others, maybe, but important to me) recorded for posterity, floating from cloud to cloud "out there" somewhere. The digital age has precipitated an obsessive need to catalogue, record & preserve everything.

As has been pointed out, it is often illegal to record a telephone conversation without consent. IMHO, unethical, too.

And to give control of it to Google? Don't they have enough of our info already?

As always, thank-you to GOTD for your daily free programs, and to the commenters with practical, valuable advice and alternatives.

I am having the same problem others are reporting regarding non-activation and not connecting to Gmail. Windows 7 and latest Firefox. I have activated other GAoTD software with no problems over the past couple of years, and the activation looks like it has run (pops up the web page), but the trial banner remains on the app. The activation dialog has a blank line, a colon, and on a third line, the license key. This maybe malformed, and I can't find a way to change it or to manually enter the license key. Then when I tried to enter my Gmail info, got "Receive failed login response from IMAP server Failed." I went to Gmail and changed my password manually to ensure no error, and still got the same error with the new password. Then I uninstalled, used Advanced System Care to remove any lingering registry keys, downloaded a new copy, and reinstalled. Same issues. BIG disappointment, because I sent it to friends with whom I Skype regularly, and they installed it without issues (on XP and Vista, not sure what OSes). I would have used this if I could have gotten it to work.

Avira Antivirus found a virus in the file "GetFullVersion.exe" included with GAOTD's distribution of the Gregory Phoenix game a few weeks ago. I sent the file to VirusTotal.com where over 60% of the scanners said the file is infected, one of the highest rates I've ever seen. GAOTD is once again trying to put malware on my PC. Since I can't trust GAOTD, it's just not worth the risk. Thanks for almost two years of occasionally good stuff, but this is goodbye. Whiterabbit, Ashraf, Bubby and others, I'll miss your comments and help.

The best pay-ware software for recording skype is from Pamela.biz, the pro version. I've been using it for 2 years to record all my skype activity (calls, chat, video calls). It is a full featured package out can run in a hidden mode.

I realize this doesn't fit into the freeware focus of this site, but many people are very interested in this category and want maximum convenience and features. Working from home, 90% of all business calls are thru skype, and it has saved my @ss many times.

Beyond that, make sure you are in a single-party recording state (meaning only one party on the phone needs to know the call is being recorded, as opposed to a two-party state, where both or all parties are required to know), otherwise make sure to not let the cat out of the bag. ;)

#21 "I’m skeptical of the ratings used in GAOTD lately."

Mate , i can assure you they are being manipulated. I have learned how to do them myself. Its not hard. Not that i engage in it. But it annoys me, as it is making the Ratings and The "Yes/No" Tallys irrelevent.

There must be a way for GAOTD to secure the ratings? Maybe like having every registered user allowed just one vote irrespective of ISP/DNS values.

Guys,

First of all thanks for your comments.
We value your opinion and already noticed several things to improve in G-Recorder.

Here is a list of the most popular Q&A:
1. How to install and register G-Recorder?
- First run Setup.exe
- Then Activate.exe
- And then enter HEK-PNSL-VIAD-AMWM in the License dialog (accessible from G-Recorder tray icon menu)
2. Does G-Recorder support Windows 7?
- Yes, both x32 and x64 are supported
3. Does G-Recorder send my records to your servers?
- No, G-Recorder sends records directly to Gmail through SSL (secured channel)
4. Does G-Recorder sends my password to anywhere?
- No, your password is used only to connect to Gmail, the same way like you type it in Browser to enter Gmail

With Best regards,
The G-Recorder Team

In the be afraid, VERY afraid security climate in he USA, I really don't want my phone conversations to be stored on Google's servers. I'm not a criminal, and never intend to be. Hover it's a bit disconcerting to learn what and how many things could end up flagging one as an interest to law enforcement.

It works perfectly. Full version. Great, but I have a doubt: In the field "skype-id" it says "giveawayoftheday", So I don´t know if now Giveawayoftheday.com will receive all our messages? There is no way to change this username. So, what´s up? I hope somebody will answer. It seems, there is no privacy. Maybe I´m wrong. But maybe I´m right. Great sunday to all.

Thankfully it's been pointed out by several people already that Google Voice is only available to people living in the USA. For those Americans who don't grasp why statements like "Why use this when GMail users can get Google Voice for free?" are quite irksome to many others, please be aware that the percentage of internet users living in the USA is 13% (and shrinking). Off-the-cuff comments like that are nowhere near as annoying as the astonishingly rude and dismissive comments made on GOTD whenever developers demonstrate that they are not native English speakers, but they are somewhat annoying all the same. It's time to ditch the US-centric mindset, methinks, people!

Eileen (#45), Revo Uninstaller also offers a freeware version which is very reliable, powerful and useful. I've been using it for years, and in fact it wasn't until reading your message that I discovered Revo Uninstaller offers a commercial version also... which of course I'd love to try out, so I second your request for a GOTD rerun.

Another alternative is just to use a digital recorder that records any audio sounds... save and send to your gmail!

Or... use your iphone recording app to record and send to gmail.

Hopefully, I have made life easier for someone today.

Sorry, there's one ADDITIONAL point -- pretty obvious really...

The recordings you make will of course not just be YOUR voice, but the OTHER person's too! And THEY may not be too enamoured of the fact that their personal conversation with you has not only been recorded, but saved to an off-site location, which COULD be broken into!

In some countries (like Britain) you are not allowed to record an ordinary telephone conversation without letting the other person KNOW that you are doing so. Clearly the law has to catch up with this idea... In my case, doing interviews, naturally the respondent knows I am recording them -- I tell them. (Not knowing shorthand, I could never keep up with their speaking....)

So, for those few people doing interviews for instance, it is hardly likely to be a problem -- anyway, the conversation is hardly "personal". But how are you going to advise everyone who calls YOU, or if you call them, that not only are you recording them, but it will go into archive in some off-site location.... Far too complicated! They'd hang up before you finished explaining!

So, it seems to me, this "simple" piece of software raises some complex social issues.

Are we to end up starting every Skype conversation with, "Are you recording this? Where will it be kept....?"

"Can of worms", indeed!

I have used skype, never felt the need to record the conversations....this app would seem to be one that has an exclusive usage.
Now, if it recorded all chat and conversations, and saved them in multiple formats including sending them to email....could be something.
Because it is offered, I will give it a try, but really, I do not see this being a valueable tool in the overall.

I could use this as I talk to "experts" through Skype via chat and call and it would be great to have the conversations held somewhere. I think I'm going to load this on my old computer so I can save those old conversations instead of copying them to a document.

I have lots of links given to me or great advice on who to ask or what to do for things... In Internet Marketing, we use Skype quite a bit.

I cannot load on this computer though as it looks not to be compatible with Windows 7, correct?

Thanks!

FWIW...
Gizmo was recently bought by Google -- Gizmo is a well established, cheaper to use, & I think more open Skype alternative [e.g. you don't have IP rights battles in the courts etc]. Between rumors & what Google's said, looks like Google is going to come out with a fairly complete service -- it's been said that *if/when* you have WiFi access you won't need your cell's carrier, & would get more features, like eventually real-time voice translate. But that is in the future... Google voice is invite only, & if you use Skype vs. Gizmo, G-Recorder might be handy, maybe especially so if/when Google becomes less Skype friendly -- it is after all now their competition.

Please do remember though that while laws vary, it's often illegal to record phone calls or conversations without everyone involved giving consent. Recording what that company rep or salesperson etc says might sound tempting, but it also might wind up with you facing charges if they ever found out about it.

Hi all!

Great tool especially for those geeks that use SKYPE on a daily basis!!

In particular what has impressed me about this app is the ability to store chats in "clouds”, always searchable and accessible to you anytime from anywhere, meaning that, thanks to G-RECORDER, you won’t lose any SKYPE chat history even if you change computers or just reinstall Windows.

How cool is that??

So 2 THUMBS UP for me!!

In addition to this application, if you are committed to work on SKYPE on a daily basis, I also suggest you install another SKYPE plugin called "TalkAndWrite" that allows SKYPE users to draw, add texts, erase, highlight and write together on a common document for education and/or online collaboration while talking on a SKYPE call.

Very cool!

Cheers from Italy!!

#7-donebythefish--ditto to you and several of you other skeptics.

Also, something nobody said yet, namely, why would you want Google to have a recording of all your phone calls to snoop through, looking for keywords to trigger advertisement tailored to all your no longer secret interests? I don't even use Gmail because of their non-privacy policy.

Skype is not such a popular application in the US but for international friends and families (mine is US-China) it can offer a fantastic savings on international phone calls. Skype is a hybrid of chat and VOIP. We are able to make unlimited calls to China based cell phones for less than $13 a month (and in China they don't pay if it's an incoming call). Skype is awesome.

As for G-mail, it's just another email service in my opinion. Why limit the functionality of today's program to only this service provider? I know Gmail is free, that isn't a big issue, just curious as to why.

The concept here raises my eyebrow and flags concern over what really is happening. After all, the program grants access to both the Skype account and the Gmail account and is sending it through the internet via a program that I have never yet heard of. Sounds like a huge opportunity for an unscrupulous company to access the entire realm of none-of-their-business! Although I seldom worry about the software that I download from GOATD, today is the exception; I won't even give this one a try. Thumbs down for the paranoia factor.

just remember, nothing is "saved" in your email. it's saved on their servers and sent to you. I have no idea whether they keep the stuff on their servers or not, but this could easily pose a security risk if someone hacked into their system.
