This weekends Steam deal (amongst others that are running concurrently) is Shogun 2: Total War which was released several weeks ago. It's got 33% off making the price just over
£20 (approx $30), which I reckon is a steal at the price. There is a DLC just made available, but that isn't included in the sale. (Costs a few pounds only and adds plenty of extra content to the game)

With all the sales running this weekend is probably a good time to mention Didimatic again. I love this site. They show current sales from all the big players (Steam, Direct2Drive, Gamersgate, Impulse, and GOG in a handy list. They show whether the games have DRM and whether there are restrictions like limited to certain regions. You can sort by any criteria. I love that you can sort by % discount. So if you want you can only look at the ones with a significant discount. Currently they are listing 410 items with discounts ranging from 5% to 90%.

The latest midweek deal which ends on Thursday 2nd June at 1800 hrs GMT is Cities XL 2011 edition, an updated version of Cities XL which was originally released in 2009. I'll probably get this one even though I have lots of unplayed games. I had 2009 and thought it was pretty good. I held off on getting XL or getting this. At one point I thought about getting XL really cheap and then doing there deal where XL owners could get this for half off. I enjoy city builders so I think I will finally have to cave in and buy it. The price in the US is $10.

There are some definite improvements to the 2009 edition, so for this price I think you'll be happy. The memory leak problem seems to have been fixed from the first edition.

Only £3.74 for such a brilliant game. this will keep you enthralled for many days (it did for me) There are several modes of play. The environments are destructible. buildings fall down as you'd expect them to depending upon where you place explosives or crash massive trucks into them. Overall a superb game. i'm really looking forwards to the soon to be released Armageddon.

Notice: Direct X 10.1 ATI video cards or Direct X 10.0 Nvidia video cards are not supported.

I was reading they have some patches from 3rd parties, but they arent 100%.

Thanks for the heads up; I was too rushed to post any details this morning. Red Faction 2 worked on my NVidia GTX750 and 8600 GS video cards and it also worked on an old 8800GS card though that card got fried awhile back. All DX10 video cards.

If I get time I'll post some images later.

The following is an edited version of a post I made when COD 6 was released (Modern Warfare 2)

Well my first impression (as it has been for the last three Call of Duty games) is......

Wow!

One of the opening sequences

There's action right from the outset...... non-stop action, with amazing visuals. Urban warfare at it’s best. That said; once you’ve played this out, the game plays the same every time you re-play it (I played the first objective several times to check). That, plus the linearity of the game are my main bug bears with this game. Apart from those, if you want an amazing Shoot ‘Em Up game this is definitely the game to get next.

Personally (although I love this game to bits already), I much prefer Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and ArmA II (Armed Assault II). Both those games sport graphics that equal Call of Duty 6, though they are not set deep within an urban environment, so the visuals tend not to look as ‘in depth’.

In Call of Duty 6, there's so much to see most of the time, but you get precious little time to actually stand and admire because you are taken up with the moment - usually firing your weapons at the enemy, lol. You can see from the video examples above that Modern Warfare II is an urban shooter, whereas both the others are based in rural areas, 'but not all of the time'; however, you don't get the intensity of close quarter battles (CQB) as much in those titles. Both are better played stealthily rather than run and gun; that's not to say you don't require strategy to play Modern Warfare II (Call of Duty 6)

Both the latter games (Operation Flashpoint and ArmA II) are open world environments, with enemy AI that’s pretty cool. Each time you play the same mission it will be slightly different, much like Left 4 Dead; the enemy are never in the same positions they were in the last time you played and there may be more or less NPC's (non playing characters with computer generated intelligence) the next time you revisit the mission. Which for me gives almost limitless playability.

ArmA II has already been offered at quarter it's usual price, as has Operation Flashpoint

I’ve noticed since Call of Duty 4 (the first modern Warfare) was released, the franchise has held it’s price tenaciously while other titles have been reduced in price within months of release. So it's great to see it offered at half price at this time. Personally I think that the high price these games have held for so long is unjustified, (but because of the awards and ‘in yer’ face press about how fantastic these games are they been artificially put up on a pedestal; that’s only my opinion though).

Conclusion:

If you are on a budget I think Operation Flashpoint and then Armed Assault II are much better deals and just as enjoyable as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. :). Still I bought Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, but then I buy all these games, lol. Its definitely exciting. The constant action, the sounds of battle, explosions and orders being shouted from NPC's (in game characters not controlled by you), gives an impression of realism few games can boast. One of the opening sequences after you've played the first objective, which is a short fire fight across a blasted and open area, is of a massive explosion that rocks the very earth beneath you, then you see a large multi-storey building start to collapse, then it's all smoke and dust for a few seconds ([b]see images above of the explosion and aftermath). It's all very entertaining and adds to the overall feel of the game. I highly recommend you have your surround sound turned up high and just go with the flow. It's exhilarating........

I'd agree about OF and ArmA2. Good games. ArmA 3 coming soon too. I think CoD4 takes the cake on all the CoD's. The game required skill back then. Now the CoD series is littered with killstreaks... and the guy on the top of the leaderboard/score screen may or may not have earned his right to be there. CoD MW2 sees more players online than CoD Black Ops does, and Black Ops is a newer game. Good deals for those interested. MW2 single player campaign is pretty good. CoD4 single player is good too... but short.
