Wubly 2 (5.4Mb)
This is a game from 2007, older than the Karoshi series by the same author, but a very good one - and it gets more difficult, in fact very difficult indeed, in some later levels! It comes complete with a level editor but you have to get to the last stage to unlock the editor (or cheat, press the ‘C’ key and type the code ‘fubly’ to unlock the editor on any level screen!).
You are a pink block, travelling through hazardous mazes, armed only with a grappling hook! Sounds simple and easy?
There is a good array of obstacles (fairly standard platform fare, such as electricity, invisible blocks, buttons to switch parts, pumps, no-grip blocks) without all of them involved at once in a level which is especially pleasing for a puzzle game. The best way to climb down walls is to manage Spider-man style, using the hook and line. You can press the ‘spacebar’ to freefall, you survive longer falls when you just hit the floor. You move with the arrow keys using the grappling hook, the ‘X’ key restarts a phase and you get codes you can enter as you proceed, by using the ‘C’ key. As the game character has an infinite number of lives, getting killed just has you restarting a stage (providing you note/write down the codes!). There’s very often just one correct route through a stage! It’s a good thought-provoking logic game, but needs a good measure of skill!
The 10 step tutorial is thorough, and none to easy to complete in itself! There are 6 worlds in all, with nine stages each. Interestingly, you need not complete all 9 levels of each world, you can proceed on to the next of the worlds, after completing 5 of the 9 stages. There’s also a final boss level. You might need ‘Ctrl + Alt + Del’ to exit the game. Spacebar and arrow keys for the menu. It runs in a window.
Though the graphics and music are average, gameplay is excellent!
