Death Giver 2 (7.9Mb)
Sometimes it’s good to give more junior games makers a mention. And this game is good for ‘junior’ but not too 'junior' players! It’s a side and vertically scrolling 2D game, initially set in a skyscraper. You have helicopters and bad guys to shoot, while finding ammunition and health packs, before you run out of health or ammunition. The skyscraper is a mini-maze of sets of rooms, and you have to find the ‘hidden’ exit to the next set of rooms. In the first set of rooms, it’s a black square, then a window shape in the next set of rooms and so on. You can open and walk through doors into the different rooms. To get through doors, just have your head below the door ceiling height! Use the ‘wasd’ keys to move. Once you have ammo, you aim and shoot with the mouse. Press the ‘spacebar’ to clear dialogue screens! The bad guys (or you!) get nicely splattered when finished off! For this reason, it isn’t suited to very young players! Older youngsters and adults will enjoy the gamestyle though, no doubt!
The graphics are a very competent retro style, with the rooms scrolling across or up/down over the background as you move through the rooms with the arrow keys; - cool! The music and sound effects are very suited to the game as well, and you have to try to kill the baddies to progress through the rooms, or they will kill you! You start off with a pistol but no ammo, and as you get further through the game, other weapons (shotgun, machine gun, grenades) become available and you use the ‘1234’ keys to change weapons. More and more baddies appear in ‘rooms’ as you get further into the game, making it quite a challenge! The game autosaves your progress as you complete level stages, though only for the present play session, unless you complete and unlock the next (of 4) chapters. There's a helicopter chase and shoot sequence you play between chapters. Board the helicopter when it's available.
The game may be simplistic in style, but it’s fun to play, and none too easy to get through each stage to the next one with enough health to get through the next stage! The later and more powerful weapons help though! Use the mouse in menu, and there’s a windows symbol on the initial menu screen to play full screen. The game plays straight from the downloaded game exe file. I did find that with my firewall/antivirus program, I had to allow the various files created to run each time I loaded up the game, but that might not be the case for other/different firewall/AV programs.
It’s a good and polished game, which you will certainly enjoy if you like roaming around, shooting and avoiding getting shot at! The author is working on Death Giver 3, which given the improvements in the present game from his first version, is one to look forward to!
*There is use of strong expletives on notice boards/dialogue later in the game.
