Dragon Ball Arcade 20.6Mb
Dragon Ball Arcade is a vertically scrolling 2D shooter where you kill a lot of enemies - of the Pilaf army. It had a brief mention amongst two other games in Week 47 (Here). I’m re-posting it now as it’s become somewhat popular in the interim!
You control Goku, when he was a child (Songo = Son Goku!) flying on his magic cloud, chasing after robots to destroy. Of course you can fire and power up your weapons thanks to the items you'll find on your way. Catch as many bonuses as you can, and upgrade weapons to score as many points as possible. You attack with fire powers and three special powers (Dragon Balls) you can obtain. The special powers have limited duration, but do recharge gradually when not being used, as indicated by the number of bars on the right. There are also anti-bonuses (suckers) which will deplete your fire power and diminish upgrades and specials if you accidentally collect them. The shields part way up the screen (which you can shoot through) get destroyed when hit sufficient times by enemy fire. Try to make the most of your shots as missing uses up energy!
On completion of each level, you have to defeat Bosses that are really hard to kill. They take a lot of hits, and you’re quite likely to run out of fire power as you try to tackle them. You have a number of lives indicated by a horizontal bar at lower right, but it’s game over when they are all used up. You get higher ranking as you proceed further through the game, as well as trying to beat your best high score!
Arrow keys and Enter in the menu, and arrow keys and spacebar for playing, plus ‘1 2 3’ or ‘q w e’ keys to use the dragon ball special powers, when available. You can choose in the menu between different weapons to choose the one you use initially when the game starts. The game plays windowed either in a large window, or re-sizable smaller window. ‘Esc’ key quits the game. The controls are quite responsive for playing the game, which does add to the general enjoyment!
Graphics and animations are excellent, and Goku is particularly well rendered flying Kinton Nimbus, the magic cloud. Furthermore, other main characters and enemies are especially stunning when they appear. You’ll either like the music or find it quite irksome, but sound and music volumes are adjustable and the voice over can be turned off. Sound effects are quite good. You will have to reset different volume levels each separate time you play though.
It should run on any version of Windows including Windows 7. Music and sounds are ogg files so you could replace any of these.
You can decline the optional toolbar installs.
Dragon Ball Arcade is a funny and fun arcade game that will be loved by Dragon Ball fans, who will remember those first chapters of the saga . . . !
