Magicor! 15.6Mb
- The cool penguin saves the world!
Available free for Windows, Mac and Ubuntu Linux.
Magicor! is a rather neat and nice puzzler. You are a penguin, and your quest is to put out fires without getting singed or sizzled/toasted in the process! Although we don't know exactly if Tux is the main character of Magicor!, you'll have to jiggle your brain to solve some of the excellent puzzles set in this game!
The aim is to put out the all of the fires that are pre-placed in strategic locations. How exactly will you put out the flames? - You have ice blocks to use, you can use already created ones or you can create new ice blocks below your feet, just ahead of you! You either push the ice blocks or drop them onto the fires or ignited hot coals.
Press Spacebar to create new ice blocks or break existing ones, build ice platforms and move them to set out the flames. You can only build (and break) ice blocks that are ahead of you and directly below you.
That’s about it really, you move with the arrow keys, and can only climb up an ice block or a block with a small step showing. Falling doesn’t kill you unless you go off-screen in the process. You can push single ice blocks or fall with free ice blocks that are away from walls. Avoid walking into the fires, hot coals when ignited or other moving enemies eg spiders. If fire falls onto hot coals they ignite. There are also transport pipes (2-way if close to the ground at the exit, 1-way otherwise) using up/down arrow keys to move through them. Other new features as the game progresses include moving spikes!
Nice graphics, good animation, simple user controls (for this game, there are just four arrow keys, space bar and the Return key, or you can define the keys to use), interesting sound effects, optional full screen mode, some soothing background music and lots of levels which progressively add new features and get more (and more!) difficult. Additional further levels are unlocked as you progress so there is some choice available in the order you tackle the levels.
It is possible to open any of the default levels in Notepad and by looking at simple levels you can try modifying them one bit at a time to see how the level is constructed. You could then try constructing complete levels of your own. It's just a 'bit' of a shame the authors stopped short of making an easy Windows level editor!
The game has tidy graphics and ingenious, if sometimes difficult puzzles. The puzzles start off ‘relatively’ easy and get to maximum difficulty later on in the game. You’ll need a good deal of very open-minded lateral thinking as the game goes on!
The game comes complete with 80 different levels that will take the very best of your mind - thinking and using puzzle-solving skills to solve them all. Highly Recommended!

There are some optional ‘raw’ update patches (with just a few minor fixes or minor adjustments), but you’ll have to navigate the repository site Here to find them. The game mostly plays fine without these!
