Armagetron Advanced 2.8Mb
Think Tron, in 3D and free online multiplayer! Armagetron Advanced has now hit Beta and versions from now on will be compatible with future new gameplay features. There is also a local play single player option playing against 1 or more computer AI opponents offline.
"Tron was an arcade game based on the movie of the same name, released by Disney in 1982. The original game consisted of 4 sub-games, the only one of concern for us gamers is the 'Light Cycles' one, in which the player uses a left/right joystick to control a 'Light Cycle' which leaves a wall behind it wherever the cycle it goes, turning only at 90 degree angles. The player must then get the AI to crash into their wall while avoiding hitting the AI's own wall themselves. Those were the humble beginnings of Armagetron Advanced's game play, which has now blossomed into 16 player mayhem, with highly advanced AI, network game play, and of course all in a 3D environment."
Highlights include a customizable playing arena, HUD, unique graphics, and AI bots. For the more advanced player there are new game modes and a wide variety of physics settings to tweak as well.
Best of all, there a large number of custom moviepacks that skin the game appearance and sound effects. These are very easy to apply; just make a folder in your program directory named "moviepack" and place the files in there: C:\Program Files\Armagetron Advanced\moviepack. Start the game and choose moviepack:on in the menu then select the moviepack from the game menu.

You can also customize many aspects of the game and its appearance via the game menu system.
Armagetron is advancing all the time, there are now many different game play modes and changing maps, with new ones in development. One gameplay mode is Fortress: Capture the enemy base. This game may be played with teams or death match style. Fortress differs from the normal style of game play as the main object is not necessarily to go round, kill everyone else and be the last person alive. As you enter a server you will be automatically assigned to a team. Two zones will appear on either side of the arena that look like the win / kill zones on normal servers. Primarily, the main goal is to capture the other teams zone and to protect your own zone from capture. Other modes are; Death Match: You versus everyone else; Team Death Match: Cooperate with your teammates to win the match; Pig Sty: A team death match where you try to shoot the other team's players with death zones; Sumo: Stay in a zone while trying to force your opponent out; Capture the Flag: Capture the opponents' flag and try to bring it back to your own zone; Race: Race to the win zone at the end of the map; Low/High Rubber: Low: Try to destroy other cycles in your traps. You can face the wall for a little bit. You don't have much rubber, on average 7 rubber. High: Try to destroy other cycles in your traps. You can face the wall for a longer time. You have on average 40 rubber.
This has to be the very best Tron light-cycle game! It’s open source and available for Windows, Mac and Linux, and the client download is really small. It’s a superb implementation. With the Windows version, you use the Z and X keys to turn, and you can zoom the camera right in or out using the mouse. To accelerate you 'slingshot' by running close to (‘grind’) another players wall, the closer you get without hitting it, the more you accelerate. Your initial velocity is quite high. The default key for brakes is ‘V’ but your brakes are limited and run out after some use! You have a ‘grinding’ tolerance called rubber and the higher it is, the closer you can get to walls without crashing. But you use rubber when you get close to walls. Your HUD shows you how much rubber is left.
The game controls are extremely responsive but the local gameplay is never over-easy, as the AI opponents are very skilled! The AI are mostly defensive, at least as of now. Hopefully they'll be made more aggressive in future. Cut them off, box them, make them crash into your wall!
There are a sizable number of online servers for playing against real opponents online. You can also download a small file on the game download page to set up your own server for the game, eg across a LAN!
You might remember Tron 2.0 but the difference is that Armagetron is extremely fun!
There’s a comprehensive forum on the game website, with help on practically any issue you may come across. There’s also a fan-based user/help website.
How they program such a fantastic (and it really is fantastic!) game into just 8Mb extracted, I'll never know. They must have some absolutely brilliant programmers working on the design /programming team!
The graphics are stunning, and there are great sound effects. I didn’t find any bugs playing it, and if you enjoy Tron, this really is the bee’s knees version. You can almost hear and feel the light-cycles buzz! You could wait for the final release version, but the beta version seems great and there may only be minor changes and maybe a few new gameplay features. Do give this one a try!
