Tile World (2006) 0.5Mb
Tile World is a ‘copy’ of the very well known puzzle game Chip’s Challenge available from Microsoft Entertainment Packs. Tile World however does not directly copy the graphics from Chip’s Challenge as this would breach copyright. But Tile World can be played with two different rule sets ie the Microsoft set or a Lynx rule set. The Lynx rule set is more consistent and error-free. The Microsoft based rule set allows play consistent with Chip’s Challenge. If you have the data (chips dat) file for Chip’s Challenge, you can in fact play these levels directly in Tile World by copying the data file across. Tile World is complete though, with its own user-designed custom levels which are both varied and challenging!
The basic plot of the game is that high-school nerd Chip McCallahan has met Melinda The Mental Marvel in the school science laboratory and must navigate through Melinda's "Clubhouse" (a series of increasingly difficult puzzles) in order to prove himself and gain membership to the very exclusive Bit Buster Club.
The aim is to collect all of the computer chips and make your way to the exit within the allotted time. Standing in your chappie's way are doors, walls, ice, bombs, traps, conveyor belts, teleporters, fire and more. There are switches to toggle doors, ice skates to pass over ice, and blocks to fill in holes. Then there are enemies to avoid: fireballs, bugs, etc.
The items in Chip's Challenge have clearly been an inspiration for many other games.
Some levels are action-oriented while some are puzzle-oriented, such as emphasis on pushing blocks Sokoban style, dodging enemies and finding a way through a maze.
As added challenges there are time limits, levels must be played sequentially, and there are passwords to remember/write down. Some levels require careful timing. Only the small area around your chappie is visible. There are hidden items such as invisible walls, and if move the wrong block to reveal fire, oops, you die! Many levels cannot be solved with thought alone. You spend a lot of time wandering about learning each level. Hopefully to good avail! The first eight levels or so form a tutorial.
A very innovative and entertaining game, do give this a try if you haven’t played it before! It has quite a following online.
A ‘new’ and up-to-date version called Chuck’s Challenge is out and available free in the iPhone apps store, and if this is successful, it might be released on other platforms including the PC.
