Fish Fillets - Next Generation 152Mb
I have been trying to post free games that are either outstanding in their own right, or as with today’s, rather less well known than they should be! It's a development for Windows and Linux of the probably equally as less well known Altar game Fish Fillets.
The goal in each of the seventy levels is the same: to find a safe way out to the exit, to get to the next screen for both of the two fish. The fish utter witty remarks about their surroundings, the various inhabitants of their underwater realm quarrel among themselves or comment on the efforts of your fish. The whole game is accompanied by some pretty good gentle background music. You might need this to soothe your nerves, if frayed by less successful attempts at some levels! This latest release came out on 23rd December 2010.
There’s a simple cheat available that 'might' just make some levels a little bit easier, or if you really get stuck! The graphics in the game are splendid. In some places, the map branches, so you have a choice of ways in which to go. Classically, the fish are controlled using the arrow keys and the spacebar to switch between them - moving one fish at a time. (Alternatively, you can use the keys wsad for large and ijkl for the small fish, but not switching via the space bar, but it has the same effect - always moving just one fish.) You can also select the fish to move with the left mouse button and click on where it's to go to, or use the right button to try to make the fish move something.
The two fish have different skills and properties. The larger fish is unable to navigate narrow passages, but can move heavier and larger items. The smaller fish fits through narrow cracks and passages but can't move heavier items. So you have to use the fish cooperatively. The early missions although not at all easy provide a concise tutorial. The fishes' comments can be really funny as you try to get them both to the exit!
There are clear crisp sound effects such as water lapping, and the animation is really excellent eg moving fins on fish, crustaceans, eye balls, aquatic plants swaying in the water, an octopus playing balalaika, dancing anemones. All in all very highly recommended, and though not easy, it’s a most excellent puzzle/logic game! Do read the manual before playing! F11 key for playing full-screen.
