Hi Topic 148, welcome back. (We've not seen you in the forums for over two years). :)
You didn't say which operating system you were using? There are other alternatives that you could try, one of which is using Windows own encryption option, though it does depend upon which operating system you have and to a certain extent on the 'flavour' of the O.S. (i.e. whether it's a Home, Pro, Ultimate edition etc).
e.g.
You can encrypt your files and folders directly using all versions of Windows from Windows XP onwards apart from the XP Home editions and even then you can encrypt in Win XP Home if you use programs like Tweak UI that enable you to unlock the feature (you can still see this feature in XP Home, but it's greyed out and inaccessible). The following windows method can only be used if you are using a computer with more than one account. If you are using Win XP home you will need to use a program such as 'Tweak UI' (fourth row down) to configure windows to activate the greyed out encrypt option, however there are restrictions such as having your HDD formatted using NTFS and not the older FAT32 file system and you can only encrypt folders within the Documents and Settings folder
1) Select the folder you wish to encrypt.
2) Right-click the folder and click Properties.
3) Click the Advanced button.
4) Check "Encrypt contents to secure data" option.
5) Click Apply and then Ok.
If you are using either Vista or Win 7 to encrypt a folder or file (all flavours) use the following steps to encrypt a folder or file
1) Right-click the folder or file you want to encrypt, and then click Properties.
2) Click the 'General' tab, and then click 'Advanced'.
3) Select the 'Encrypt contents to secure data' check box, and then click OK.
If you want to password protect folders that are not frequently used on a single account computer the alternative would be to compress the folder using a suitable archiver then password protect it, or use one of the following freeware solutions:
• AxCrypt - An excellent free encryption utility that enables users to encrypt all files within a folder and not allow those files to be viewed unless a passphrase (password) is known.
• WinCry - A freeware utility that enables your files to be encrypted, secure deletion, as well as other helpful methods of protecting your files. (There’s a commercial version of this program as well)
• Trucrypt – There’s no option to encrypt individual files, you have to create a partition or encrypt a full hard drive; though this can be any external HDD that includes USB pen drives. Once you’ve created your partition, or encrypted your pen drive you just ‘drag and drop’ or ‘copy and paste’ the folders and files you want to encrypt. Simplz, lol
The following commercial solution (costs a lot more than SecureMyfiles, but has more options) is another alternative:
• Folder Guard - A commercial version of a password protection software that enables you to password protect files, folders, and other Windows resources.
Edit:
There are more, but the ones I listed above were the only ones I could think of so I decided to do a quick search and found a decent list of commercial and free encryption software over on the cnet site.
Also I nearly forgot to mention that you can now get a freeware equivalent to 'Tweak UI' (which I mentioned above) for Vista and Win 7 ([i]Tweak UI won't work with them) called 'Ultimate Windows Tweaker' which you can find details of and a download link HERE
I hope the above is of some help.
