I installed this program using Sandboxie 5.12 because there was a smell of Spyware about it.

Any program that requires Carte Blanche "Online Activation" permissions without knowing or notifying the User "exactly what is being sent to the Vendor & what the Vendor is sending back to the User's PC" is a program that (regretably - because it looks quite powerful) is ESSENTiALLY SPYWARE and doesn't place any TRUST in the HONESTY of the USER.

So although I think the program looks to be a very good (perhaps 'Powerful') file manager - and I own a number of Paid for File Managers which come with "Per User [not Per PC] Licenses" such as Directory Opus / XYplorer / xplorer² / FileBoss / PowerDesk Pro / etc etc and those programs all trust their Licensed Owners, I'll be junking or uninstalling FolderViewer 5.0 (by deleting the User Created Sandbox and then running a Registry Scan for any stuff left behind).

The SOLUTiON:

SO SAD that the Vendor - in my opinion, Doesn't trust the License Owners & that could have been done by asking today's User's to send Name and email address in return for receiving a personalised License Key. As I said it looks to have some really powerful features but not at the cost of Carte Blanche access to my PC's. [Or at least that's how I see their perpetual online activation access]

Yes we agree. It is a choice and it will keep us safe from piracy. The Enigma Protector company has done a really good job for many developers around the world. Many still in existence because of their fine work.

If the software is using the dlls of explorer and they subsequently get recoded won't this mean that the situation could arise where the software could be crippled until such time as you produce an update?

Reply   |   Comment by Colin  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Colin,

That is always a risc. But the fact is, that FolderViewer has been around for quite a while now and we still managed to adapt and integrate it with consecutive versions of Windows.
As always updates will be free of charge, so hardly any riscs involved for the consumer.
We can keep the price low, because the World is our market and sales volumes provides us with plenty enough profit developing software for everyone.

I thought this looked like a really useful app to get and try out.
Well, I meticulously followed all the instructions, but the activation apparently failed with a fleeting message that details were being sent to support, or something,
So, when the offer expires in about 3 hrs, it seems as though the app will be stuck as a 14-day trial and then it will be disabled.
How is this this a GOTD?
Any useful advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Reply   |   Comment by Slartibartfarst  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Just noting here that I overcame the problem by the simple expedient of running the installer again, but this time giving the installer proggie a pass through the firewall, whereupon the thing promptly did an online activation using the key provided in the text file in the installer package. I think the installer had bailed out at the first attempt because it was not immediately allowed out through the firewall.
I am now running the "activated" program, and it seems fine, but with some understandable non-fatal ISAM errors (because I always try to break things when testing). Curiously, it still holds a greyed-out reference to download and install the Google Desktop Search. Since GDS has long been defunct that rather shows the app's age and the fact that it has apparently been undeveloped for several years and arguably should be retired on that basis alone. However, it is an interesting piece of software that challenges one to define it, but it is certainly NOT just another Windows Explorer add-on comparable to Windows Double Explorer as someone has suggested, nor is it a by any means a Windows Explorer replacement (which position has probably been held by xplorer² for years now). No, this app definitely seems to be based on the theory of collaborative computing and may have broken - and still be breaking - some new ground. Quite how useful it is I have yet to determine, but I suspect that, like Lotus Agenda, there may be nothing that quite matches it.

Reply   |   Comment by Slartibartfarst  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Slartibartfarst,

Thanks for your comments so far. GDS has indeed been defunct since years now. The reason that we still developed a `wrapper` around it is, because we still think it was the best searchengines ever. The foorprint and speed were never met by any other program. At start-up FV5 checkes if its installed on your machine and enables the button.
Because the results are listed in a database - whose records are attached to the Windows Explorer Shell functions (right click on one of the results), it enabled us to many smart things with result.
Like data analysis, printing,exporting etc.
We always thought that software developing should be indeed about collaborative computing. Building and using things that were proven to work. Maybe improving it along the way.
Again thanks for your comments.

Actually for $10, this folder viewer software is not bad, provided there are no bugs.
For XP users this software cannot be installed.
XP users may like to check out the supreme file manager Total Commander by Ghisler.
It is shareware.
There are many plug-ins which extend its usefulness incredibly.

Download/Install w/out issues - Win 7 Ultim - according to the Install.log, although 2 attempts to change registry were denied. The programme really tries to be the "whole in one": it bears much more and different options when compared to XYplore 15.90, offered here some time ago. But I did miss the ability to label/tag the files. Quite worth trying, soft learning curve and well beyond IE in toos and features.

None of the favorites work. I thought maybe that your program just had the links wrong. I deleted one of them and it also deleted it from Windows Explorer. That was annoying. I replaced it in Explorer but it doesn't work in your program.

An Explorer program is far too important to not work perfectly.

Besides Windows Explorer, I use PowerDesk 6 (very old, but reliable), XYplorer Free, ZtreeWin. I use a shell for Explorer called Clover that adds tabs, and I use the Classic Explorer add-in. FolderViewer doesn't seem to be ready for prime time.

The installation program offers far too much information to the user. Just install it! Don't give baby-steps notices.

Thanks

Reply   |   Comment by andario  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Hi Andario,

No, FolderViewer is programmed in Delphi and is a very feature rich program, while still being relatively small bytewise. It makes use of many tools, dll's, Window components already installed on your computer. The philosophy behind this program is based on a paradigma proposed in this book: https://www.amazon.com/Collaborative-Computing-Delphi-James-Callan/dp/1556225547.
It uses the .dll's of the Explorer but does not integrate with it.

MatirSoft Support Team, thanks, I just installed.

However, the main window opens with two different Explorer windows, which show my "Favorites" menu, to the left. As soon as I click there to access any of the directories, it says "The system cannot access the specified route". Why?

On another note, when I click on "Settings", the "Search root folder" shows me by default this path: F:\Test MP3. I neither have an F: disk, and much less a "Test MP3" folder. Why is supposed to be my "root folder" is truly beyond me.

Thanks

Hooray! a SetUp without a GCD file. For the first time in months I could install without going into Safe Mode.

I have an outdated copy of Directory Opus (version 9). In the days ahead I will explore FolderViewer to see how they compare. Given the current price of Directory Opus, I am not expecting this program to beat it - but it would be a pleasant surprise ...

Reply   |   Comment by Brian Haylett  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Brian Haylett,
You might want to upgrade your Directory Opus to the new version 12. It's a whole lot better than version 9 with more flexibility, greater ease of use, and many new additional features. While I'm sure that FolderViewer 5 doesn't compare to Directory Opus 12, it may be a satisfactory solution for many users and, let's face it, the price is right, even at $10 (US).

Just watched some of the videos. It looks to be a really brilliant software!

On the 'Advanced Copy' functionality, does it work with 'Cut & Paste', too? Can you move files & folders according to selected criteria, & into a new directory organisation based on those criteria?
Thank you.

Reply   |   Comment by AK  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Hi AK,

The Advanced Copy Tool makes use of a complex algorithm. So this does not work in a simple Copy/Paste operation.
FolderViewer is the first program that implements this is an Explorer like environment.

Also, it would be awesome if you guys made it possible to preview a video in the folder viewer rather than having to open each video file(that would truly be epic for a program to do)

MatirSoft Support Team, That partially worked. I con open about half the folders now. I notice that the other half have i little padlock on them and I still get the same error message, "Access Denied", when I try to open them. I also get the access denied message when I double-click on the 'Desktop' icon (which does not have the folder symbol let alone the padlock), which is annoying because I'm lazy and save a lot of stuff to desktop temporarilly while I'm working with those items, after which I move them to where I probably should have put them in the first place. Any suggestions as to how I can resolve these 2 remaining 'access denied' issues: 1) the folders that are padlocked? 2) accessing 'desktop' though FolderViewer?

The download and installation went flawlessy. Using Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

The app has TONS of features, possibly to the point that finding some of them may take some time. However, it is highly customizable and, so far, I recommend giving it a try.

I would like the ability to view all files in subfolders starting from the selected folder. But have not been able to find that feature.

This program is much better than I thought......tons of options.

I'd like to set it up with a single explorer window and the file viewer on the bottom, but 5 minutes into checking it out, I got a dialog box titled Folderviewer with this error message when I clicked on the File Editors window and clicked on New........
folderviewer
---------------------------
Access violation at address 01A373BC in module 'folderviewer.exe'. Read of address 00000294.

I clicked OK and Folderview did not crash, but clicking on New produced the same error.

This will take quite a while to configure it, so I'll post back later with a better review.

Well... The sheer size of the additions to the registy is most impressive... I'm sure a lot of it has to do with using The enigma protector... For a file manager, which many developers can put together in a portable app, the foot print of this "Util" is just too big for me to ever consider using seriously.

I tried to find the thing I always look for for a replacement for windows explorer, making the fonts bigger and more readible. The Config Page is very lacking in anything that can be "tweaked" including font size.

On top of that, it always starts centered between my 2 monitors. Not really good sign.

It doesnt have the the things I need to replace file manager... Not going to waste any more of my time on this...

Mememe,

Will take it into consideration when we plan the next update.

Can confirm that on multiple monitor systems the program always opens split between two of them. Program does not remember screen location when closed & reopened.
Further it seems to take very long time to fully load program to usable state (over 1minute on my 12 core 32GB ram system) on initial launch. Also installs shortcut into Windows Startup folder without permission.
Program does look promising but definitely needs some performance I & customization improvements.

Mememe,

Try XYplorerFree. The download file is under 3.44 MB. There is NO installation. Just unzip it and run it.

Catamus Mann,

Probably some other problems with your system.
MatirSoft always tests their software on many different systems. Even on thinclients running it on servers.

The average loading time is between 5 to 10 seconds.

MatirSoft Support Team,
Thanks for the response, but never a good idea to blame the customer's system without further information. Since I work in IT and repair computers for a living I know my system runs fine. All other programs load in seconds and I seldom run into any issues I cannot resolve.
Your program takes over 1 minute (closer to 2) to get to a usable state. Perhaps it is due to the various security programs I run, perhaps due to multiple hard drives (some SSD, others mechanical), perhaps due to NAS and external USB drives? Hard to say & I am unwilling to do the troubleshooting, especially if it requires disabling security or hardware changes since that would counter any usefulness the program offers.
Suggest you test on a few more systems and/or gather customer feedback as I am surely not the only one to experience such problems.
-Best of luck.

Activation does not work. So all you get is 14 days.

In fact, it would not even load at all for me. So I get 0 days.

Drek Meek,

The program has been protected by Enigma.
You need to have an Internet connection. Sometimes the connection is blocked by other software.
The connection is only required one.

Install went fine, but very archaic (had to give permission to import register files, start menu folder contains a .bat file).
After installation and running the program, it didn't show a window (it had a button on the taskbar though).
Windows 10, anni update, 64 bit Dutch

update: I also have 3 monitors and the program window had placed itself in a non visible area. Now I do have a program window.

Rock,

We will change that so that the program will start at left upper corner.

Horrible installer but it got installed with no problems on Windows 10 anniversary update, activated via online activation, the program looks not bad.

Another program that insists on an open internet connection for installation... Ain't gonna happen on my studio PC... I'll have to pass on this one.

Is this a separate program, or increase in Windows Explorer? Probably the first. :)

I thought I should repost my comment from yester because there weren't many comments on the clunker folder lock...............

I wasn't giving up trying to figure out the setup.exe software wrapper crashes and Failed to connect error messages. Like I stated in the past, I would disable my AVG, exit my firewall, but one thing I noticed is that when I ended task on Firewallsvc.exe, it would repopulate in Task Manager.

So I decided to uninstall either one of the two malware programs I had or the third party firewall named Free Firewall. I went with Free Firewall and after the uninstallation, setup.exe worked for the first time in a week.

Halalooya, I tried the other program that day and that worked as well. If you have the third party program named Free Firewall, uninstall it and you'll be good to go. Hope this helps some others as well.

forensics guy,

Many options I select give me that error as well.
Pretty buggy and the Music library is kind of unfriendly as well.

I have other programs that do the same, much better. Free Commander is what I will continue to use.

This one will be uninstalled. If I get an error code right off the bat, then the program should be rewritten/update. It tries to do way too much...in my opinion.
