Will definitely be using this when the other methods fail, and you know they will. Who knows maybe it'll become my go to file sharer. Can't test this out right now, but it is Pcwinsoft so you know it works!
And this is an actual giveaway! Thank you Pcwinsoft for providing an actual giveaway! Not an extended trial.

Apologies in advance but I have a couple of questions and couldn't find any details on the publisher's website.

I assume the router port forwarding is required simply to "hide" this software's listening port (e.g., port 12345 > 22) from uninvited scanners. However if my ISP blocks unsolicited inbound traffic (like many cable TV offerings) I'm guessing there's no way to make this software work. Just wondering if I've got that right and if anyone has gotten around that before.

Thanks

> I assume the router port forwarding is required simply to "hide" this...
If will forward a public listening port e.g. :12345 port to :22 port. Any uninvited scan from the internet to your router's port 12345 will be forwarded to yoour computer's port 22.
Port forwarding does not hide anything, it simply allows routing to your computer if your computer is not directly connected to the internet.

> I'm wondering if this is really secure as I'm opening a port on my router that can allow anyone to find that port using a simple scan for open ports and then gain access to my system
Allowing to connect on an open port does not "grant access" to your system. It grants access to communicate with your system/application IF it is listening on the specific port.

> I'm wondering if this is really secure...
No it is not. It uses plain HTTP with no encryption at all for traffic. passwords are sent in clear.

> Is it safe?
It may be able to serve files safely (small attack surface), but since the clients can not download from safely due to the lack of transport encryption (no HTTPS), I say no, it is not safe.

> Any alternative if my requirement is being able to access from any web browser without the need to install client software?
Super Simple Server, and maybe OnionShare if you don't mind connecting via Tor.

correction:
"I'm wondering if this is really secure..." and "Is it safe?" questions are asked by Jennifer about the File Sharing Pro program, not about port forwarding.

Anonymous, I disagree that forwarding a non-standard port like 12345 to 22 will not hide anything. Of course if a malicious scanner decides to test all 65536 ports it will find that 12345 is listening.

However most baddies are opportunistic and only check the common ports (20-FTP, 22-SSH, 25-SMTP, 80-HTTP, etc.) to see if there's a pulse at the other end.

It's like looking for a 1909 penny in a jar of change, yes you absolutely will find it (should one exist) if you check everything, hopefully it just isn't worth it.

I'm wondering if this is really secure as I'm opening a port on my router that can allow anyone to find that port using a simple scan for open ports and then gain access to my system. Is there a way to stop unwanted traffic from gaining access?
I'm waiting to know the answer to the above prior to even downloading as I cannot allow unwanted traffic to get on my system.
Thanks!

"I'm wondering if this is really secure..."

There are always going to be vulnerabilities. Large corporations, small to mid-sized biz, and government agencies get hacked every day. Yes, sometimes it's due to phishing, but sometimes it's due to previously unknown software vulnerabilities. There's an industry of cyber criminals looking for those kinds of vulnerabilities 24/7. So regardless the software you use, the 1st question to ask is if having a public-facing server is worth that risk? Most people say no, uploading any files they want to share instead -- that's why file sharing sites and cloud storage, e.g., Google Drive, have billions of people using them daily.

Many thanks to PCWinsoft for offering a lifetime license (a true software giveaway) for this potentially useful software. (Other software developers: please note!!)

As to whether I intend to download and try, I am looking forward to the comments of other, more knowledgeable, GAOTDers. Specifically, I'd like to know if the problems and shortcomings reported the last time this software was offered (November 2022) have been fixed. See https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/file-sharing-pro-3-4-4-3/

Looking forward to the comments to come.

Yes it will work. But only if the VPN allows port forwarding.
