Tested all type of output files and only PPT works.
>DOC (word) only coverted 2 of 3 files selected and text converted ok but all the rest of the file was distorted and not in proper layout.
Flash was terible...
To image failed to convert at all.
Waste of time to download and install then have to uninstall.
Please try harder. Had no ill effect on my PC as of yet.

This uses ghostscript which is GPL released software. I'ts a copyleft license and I'm pretty sure that means this software (since it uses it) has to be free and open source too...

First, I have to admit - this is one of the worst converters I have come across. But thanks to GAOTD and PageFlipPDF for letting us try!

HOWEVER, none of them work as most people expect. When you make a PDF from any file, you lose all the little 'control tags' imbedded in the original - so an indent on the first line of a paragraph could be formed by a Tab key being pressed, several spaces, a paragraph tag with a first line indent key, a margin setting, or several other ways. When it is saved as a PDF, it is simply an indented paragraph and the converter has to 'guess' how to retag it for Word. Different programs make different 'guesses'. None will be perfect. But some are better than others based upon the type of file it is working on.

So, sometimes you will end up with something pretty decent (but usually VERY tough to edit because of the imperfect 'guesses') and others look like gibberish.

All that being said - for simple conversions - the best overall I have found is Aostsoft All Document Converter Professional.

A poor offering the idea behind it is good, but the program itself looks like it was a high school project, very badly written and consequently produces sub-standard results. Don't have much use for this type of software, but thought I'd give it a try ... As for the price, you gotta be joking!

While the gift of free software is a lovely thing, I appreciate everyone's comments here - both positive and negative - especially since I'm far from a computer expert.

Getting myself into a 'fix' while trying to install or use a program can be a mini-nightmare for someone who simply wants a program to install easily and do what is promised - and today, I especially appreciate Giovanni's recommendation of "pdfcore". (I downloaded, it installed with no glitches and it's so easy to use and, best of all, works perfectly).

So, thanks again to our terrific site and the free offers here - and to each who take the time to post about how each software installs and if it works as promised.

Claiming 'no third-party software needed' while requiring GhostScript and installing Boxoft Screen OCR is just plain hypocritical. You've already lost the game right there. Apparently Boxoft is used for OCR (optical character recognition) by FBM PDF Converter and not malicious in any way, although I suspect it is the main reason why converting fails so hard for so many people... I mean, it takes screenshots to perform OCR on for crying out loud. Also, nag screen on startup. Nice behavior for something that's supposed to cost money...
For me: Not tested, uninstalled and thumbed down for one reason: Boxtools. Either you inform us honestly about such third party software and offer an opt-in or you're not worth considering or the money you're asking.

Forgot to mention www.boxoft.com/free-ocr/ which is 5.2 MB for version 1.0
in comparison to free KADMOS OCR plugin for IRFANVIEW which needs 6.507.354 bytes (English) and 8.459.026 bytes (German variant), January 21, 2011, version 4.4v.

8,13 MB including Themida can't be sufficient for OCR. OCR is needed to convert PDFs whose text is a picture into DOC etc.! Other texts you can extract with the tools of your PDF reader, e.g. PDF-XChangeViewer portable.

This is a BAD software.
I had the same 3 files written in my PC, but to a different place. 3 files were written in a folder that was secretly created.

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Boxtools\Progress.gif
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Boxtools\Uninstall.exe
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Boxtools\Toolbox.exe

The PC was automatically set by this software to run Toolbox.exe upon startup.
I used Zards Startup Defender to destroy that entry.

Tested the PDF Conversion software and it FAILED.
Results:
It cannot convert a PDF to MsWord properly.
The output was truncated. The whole right hand side of document was chopped off and much text was missing.
It was a very blur output.
The converted so-called MsWord output was a PICTURE, not a text document.

Compared this to a conversion done by PDF-Zilla.
Results:
PDF-Zilla output had no truncation. The whole page was properly converted.
The output was very sharp and clear.
The converted so-called MsWord output was a PICTURE, not a text document.

Uninstalled this FBM-PDF-Converter software.

There was no entry in my Registry - maybe my Avast prevented that.

First of all, why convert from PDF, you will never get 100% conversion no matter what software you use and second, if you need a picture or text from PDF, just copy and paste, that is all you need and no software required.

I never post anything on this website, but felt I had to for this offering.

THIS PROGRAM IS ONE OF THE WORST CONVERTERS I HAVE USED!

I was really happy when I saw the program because I do a lot of conversion of brochures and catalogs, love to steal the formatting for my own projects, so I don't reinvent the wheel. I tried 3 different types of files in PDF : brochure, catalog, newsletter.

All 3 of them convert perfectly in other PDF programs. I use ExpertPDF, NitroPDF and WonderSofts PDf converter. The end result was.....

This prograom couldn't convert one page properly! All the text was thrown all over the pages. The fonts were standard but then showed up as generic Times Rman.

This program was a waste of download time. Don't do it! You need the GhostScript on top of it. They actually have some startup program that loads as stated above.

There are many free versions of other programs or limited trials that others have stated. Use those and you will be happy!

I am really surprised at the 85 people who liked the program. That tells me that they never used it and just assumed it 'looked' cool!

Hope this helps save just one person the 10 minutes of their life that it will take to download this piece of garbage.

Almost forgot--you may also need to restart your computer to get the Ghostscript download to work, at least I did, anyway.

In case anybody else is running into this problem, here's the solution: if the Ghostscript download link from today's GAOTD isn't working, try upgrading your Adobe Flash Player to version 11.4.x. It worked for me.

Adding to my comment in #12 above: This appears to be sloppy programming rather than an intentional install behind your back on my Windows 7 (64-bit) PC. In other words, it adds a line in your registry at
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
to run the program
C:ProgramData\Boxtools\Boxofttoolbox.exe
However, no such program exists at that location. The only file that exists at that location is a file called "Progress.gif". I deleted the registry entry above because, otherwise, your PC will look for it and not find it each time it starts. I also deleted the C:ProgramData\Boxtools folder.

Surprise: Without telling you or asking you, this program creates an autostart program called
"C:ProgramData\Boxtools\Boxofttoolbox.exe -autorun"
that will, of course, run every time you start your PC. It has something to do with screen capture, but I don't know yet if it's required for the program to run properly. You can read more about it here:

I have heard it said that creating pdf from word is like making soup with vegetables. It is never quite straightforward to make vegetables from soup. So this product that makes things out of pdf is going to be a disappointment for those who expect too much from it

This is to retract comment #7. I gave it one more shot and downloaded Ghostscript 8.71 for 32-bit and it works where the 64-bit would not. Hope this helps others who are running 64-bit.

It tells me I need Ghostscript. I have 9.06 installed. To try and make it happy I found and installed 8.71, but it still tells me I need Ghostscript. This is the third day in a row where things will not install or work properly. Do these people know what they're doing? Nice to get something for free but it's getting a little much lately!!

Apparently I must already have ghostscript as the program started and worked fine without dl'ing anything else. Converted a 16 page manual to images in about 20 seconds with excellent results. Also like the prompt to open conversion directory after converting. Seems to be a usable program-does what it says. Thanks GOTD & PAGEFLIP PDF

As standalone app it possibly makes sense, but I get a bitter taste with this software, because it doesn't convert "accurately" (as they claim on their website).
The program's functionality is there, but why doesn"t it work as it should or could? Is this a Beta version for us to test for you and play lab-rat? PDF Converter with 27 bucks is way overpriced. Trust me, with that price tag, your customers will go to Google and type in: "download Free PDF Converter".

To give your price tag a reason why it should be 27 bucks:
Fix the formatting, include more export and import options

The program can't be opened unless you follow their link and install the free Ghostscript 8.71.
I tested two pdf-files, one with a single image (logo) + indented and numbered text. After conversion to Word, the image was wrong, but the text seemed pretty good. When I tried to insert lines, however, the text became overwritten, and the numbering failed.
The other pdf was originally created with MS Publisher and then saved as a pdf-file, and it contained photos, wordart and text. After converting this pdf to Word, the result was totally useless.
The conversion of a single page was very fast, but as is the case with many other pdf converters, this one only converts to Word satisfactory with simple, text-based pdf-files. I didn't test export to any other format.

GPL Ghostscript

Perhaps if they got their own description correct it would make me more comfortable to download? I doubt it and this one sits where it is the download site.
