Does everyone not realize the answer to this common question is in the support section on the vendors website? That is where I always start.

"Does the app need to be installed on BOTH the source computer and the new computer?"

The answer is: YES.

So unless you already have both an old computer and a new computer ready to go, right now, you are going to be out of luck down the road.

It says here one licence for the pair of PCs

License & Reg Q5
www.fastmove.com/faq

"Can I activate FastMove on my old and new computer using the same license key?
A. Yes! Each license key is good for a pair of computers, the source PC you're copying data from and the target PC you're migrating to."

Too many questions. How long does license last? Do you need it on both computers? What if I get a new computer?

Reply   |   Comment by Charles Lewis  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

How long does the license last ? Answer 1 year.
Yes you need em on both computers.
What if u get a new computer, thats what fastmove is for.

Charles Lewis, The license is good for 2 computers. If you need to move your license from one computer to another, you 1st remove the key in one, then add it to the other. You can do that 3 times.

Will this work on 2 computers that the software was not downloaded on?

Reply   |   Comment by Amedatman  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

You are asking if the software works on the computers that dont have the software ?
No, it wont work. You really need to install the software on both computers

Has anybody tried this yet? Can you confirm how well it works in successfully transferring over existing applications and/or their configuration data? Same with user accounts and their settings?

I assume the redeemed license will be able to be used more than once and at a later date, so that the other half can be installed on the target PC even after the giveaway window? Or maybe the target Pc copy doesn't need to be registered at all. Anybody have confirmation on this?

Jeff, you install & activate the software on both PCs -- after that the license lasts 1 year, so you can use it as often as you like within that 1st year. Since the software does need to be activated on both computers, and since activation requires an internet connection, according to the GOTD terms both would need to be activated today, though the developer may or may not have that restriction. Since you can move the license from one PC to another 3 times, you could install Fastmove on another PC, activate it, then move that license to a new computer later.

Does it also work via cable connection, and will it also transfer / copy the Windows system, if my new computer has none? What if I want to migrate complete contents from an old computer to the new (empty) machine?

Reply   |   Comment by Fil  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Fil, while it's unusual to buy a computer without an OS, if you build it yourself you'd be in that situation. Fastmove can basically clone the hard disk/SSD, old to new, via the network, an intermediary external drive, or over a special USB cable -- same thing as restoring a disk image backup. Afterward Win10 or 11 *should* boot on the new computer, emphasis on "Should" -- sometimes it will not, repairs may or may not work [Google for directions], so the only option may be to install Windows. Once Win10/11 starts, it will look for any missing *critical* drivers, then attempt to install them, downloading setup files when necessary from Microsoft. You may need to download and install additional drivers once you're in Windows. Bear in mind, you may lose your Windows activation and need a new license.

mike, thanks for your explanation!

mike, Ive read the quickstart several times, nowhere i see you can "clone" a drive.
What does it say it can do :

With FastMove, you can migrate the following data from one Windows computer to another:
• User profiles
• Software (you'll need to enter your license information again for any paid software)
• Device drivers
• Custom files and folders
• Browser favorites
